There are many benefits to having a community parks and recreation department. One of the most often overlooked aspects is the economic benefit that a department has on a community. Some of these economic benefits include promoting a healthy and productive workforce, being a catalyst for tourism dollars, enhancing property values, and motivating/ attracting new businesses to the area. A good parks and recreation system increases the quality of life in a community. Surveys of CEOs have shown that they rank quality of life the third most important factor in deciding where to relocate a business. This is only followed by access to domestic markets and the availability of skilled labor. In another survey, owners of small businesses ranked parks, recreation, and open space as their highest priority when choosing a new location for a business. In 2001 Boeing Co. announced that is was going to relocate its
corporate headquarters. In the running were Chicago, Dallas, and Denver. Boeing Co. decided to relocate to Chicago. Among the reasons for their pick, Boeing officials cited that the city’s quality of life including recreation opportunities.
