axãáM Case Management Services WHERE DOES ALL MY MONEY GO?
March’s newsletter talked about being in a budget and checking to see where you were as we get into 2011. We know that last year property taxes went up as did the cost of living even though we were told it did not go up by very much. However, if your income did not go up, as was the case with many of us, the amount of money you have to meet ongoing bills that increased as a result of increased heating, gasoline for the car, insurance on the car, Medicare D Prescription Drug Insurance and grocery bills may be making you feel really pinched for money. Several articles have appeared recently about budgeting and although most of us feel we know the basics of budgeting perhaps a very elementary review of what we have coming into our household every month and what is going out every month would be worth doing. This is not an accountant’s view of budgeting nor even a very good money manager’s point of view but rather one of a person who, if, at the end of the month, has some money left over to do something fun with, the budget is considered a success! Usually it is very easy to know what is coming in each month. Wages_____________________ Social Security_______________ Pension____________________ SSI/SSIE___________________ Interest____________________ OTHER____________________ TOTAL______________________ However, remembering and listing all that goes out in a month’s time is usually what causes us grief.

OVER 100…
Last fall a program was explained to sew little dresses for girls in Africa. To date over one hundred have been sent from Stoughton senior citizens. Little Dresses for Africa is a non-profit, Christian organization, which provides relief to girls in Africa in the form of dresses. These dresses are distributed through the orphanages in Central Africa to plant in the hearts of little girls that they are worthy. If you, or someone you know, would like to sew some dresses to be sent this spring, patterns and some extra fabric are available at the reception desk at the Senior Center. Return the completed dresses to the reception desk and they will be mailed. Any questions contact Ruby Cabibbo @873-5525.
Loan Closet at the Senior Center
Did you know the Stoughton Area Senior Center has a loan closet of durable medical equipment? These items have been donated or purchased for the purpose of helping older adults who might not be able to afford these items on their own or want to try a piece of equipment before they purchase it for themselves. The purpose of the loan closet has always been to be helpful to older adults and their families during what is usually a stressful time of change due to surgery or physical disability. We have accumulated a nice variety of items that are used quite a bit. With that usage comes upkeep, repair and cleaning. We have a wonderful volunteer who works on the repair and up keep of the equipment, but we have struggled to consistently have a volunteer to clean all of this equipment. Starting March 1 we are asking for a minimum donation of $5 for the use of our loan closet. These donations will go towards repair and cleaning of the equipment. If you have any questions regarding our loan closet, please contact Cindy at 873-8585.

axãáM COA & Community Commission on Aging
Meeting Highlights for March 1, 2011 County Budget: • Denise Duranczyk, Dane County Board Supervisor of District 35, introduced herself and distributed pie charts displaying expenditure break-down of Dane County’s 2011 operating Budget. Denise serves on the Co. Health & Human Needs Committee, and C. McGlynn asked that she share her knowledge of how such county services will be impacted by the State’s Budget Reform Bill. • With an expected reduction in State shared revenues, the County’s non-mandated programs (i.e. homeless shelters, senior case management, Joining Forces for Families, developmentally disabled employment training, and adult day cares) receiving Dane County Health & Human Needs support are likely to receive cuts. The Senior Center & other Stoughton agencies provide such non-mandated programs. • It was moved that a letter be sent displaying the impact to the community if the budget repair bill is put into effect and to urge City Council to consider advocating to not have reduced shared revenue come to the City. • Please direct your concerns to your elected officials. City Budget: • H. Camacho & D. Sharpe participated in a 6-hour initial “Appreciative Inquiry” workshop for the City’s Budget for Outcomes Initiative, an approach to public budgeting that is based on funding programs and services based on their contribution to results. • Citizen feedback is needed; watch the Hub or contact City Hall for details. Fundraisers/New Charges: • Brat Sale April 29. See front for details. • Syttende Mai: Senior Center will close for the weekend after the pancake breakfast due to cost of having staff here and difficulty in finding enough volunteers. • Loan Closet: now asking for $5 min. donation. Full meeting minutes at:
