axãáM Case Management Services Live Better with Diabetes November is National Diabetes Month November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Free materials are available to provide education about good diabetes care for those who have diabetes and about ways to minimize risk for those who are at high risk for developing the disease.

Living with diabetes can mean a constant struggle to lose weight, count carbs, control blood sugar, and avoid problems. It can leave you feeling tired and depressed and unable to do the things you love. Make sure YOU are in charge—not your diabetes. A FREE, online Better Choices, Better Health ®--Diabetes (developed and tested at Stanford University) workshop can help. Sign up today at: www.RestartLiving.org/Diabetes

In Wisconsin, it is estimated that more than 475,000 adults have diabetes. Even more staggering, an estimated 1.46 million Wisconsin adults have a condition called pre-diabetes, where individuals have blood glucose levels higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Pre-diabetes is reversible with lifestyle changes such as healthy eating and increased activity. The Wisconsin Diabetes Prevention and Control Program has evidence-based tools such as the Self-Care Information and Record Booklet, Wallet Card (Personal Care Record) and Blood Sugar Log Booklet. For more information, go to:www.WisconsinDiabetesInfo.org. The American Diabetes Association offers free materials for National Diabetes Month as they work toward the vision of “a life free of diabetes and all of its burdens.” For more info, go to: www.diabetes.org/in-my-community/ programs/american-diabetes-month/? loc=DropDownIMC-2012.

Socially Isolated Older Adults In Your Area Need You.

Flu Season is NOW!

According to researchers, being socially isolated can be just as bad for people as smoking and may cause more health problems than being obese. Join the Peer Support of Dane County team. You can help reconnect isolated older adults by providing support and encouragement through friendly home visits. ! Very flexible opportunity in your community ! No experience needed, just a desire to make a difference ! Training provided Contact Anita Huber at 608-846-9469 or abrown-huber@thecommunitycornerstone.org or stop in at your local Senior Center for more information or to learn how to get involved.

It seems just about everywhere you go these days you can get a flu shot. So take advantage of the convenience. People with chronic illness including diabetes are at high risk for serious flu complications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people with diabetes are three times more likely to die from flu complications than people without diabetes. One possible complication of flu can be pneumonia. Pneumococcal vaccine is also recommended for people with chronic diseases. Get your shot today!
