Black History Month Highlight

Nona Cohen-Bowman

State University, and a Master's in Science in Counseling from Sacramento State University. Ms. Cohen-Bowman began teaching in the VCUSD in 1974 at then-Solano Junior High School. She became a teacher/counselor at Hogan High School. She spent over 22 years in Human Resources, culminating her career as the Executive Director of Human Resources for the school district until her retirement in 2011. She has also served as Adjunct Professor of Chapman University (now Brandman University in Fairfield, CA) and as Advisor for the Field Service Council at Pacific Union College (Angwin, CA). She was recognized by the Association of California School Administrators as the Human Resources Administrator of the Year and the 2012 Women's Legacy Award by the Solano County Black Chamber of Commerce.

Nona Cohen-Bowman is a lifelong resident and educator of Vallejo, CA. Cohen-Bowman is a member and former president of the Vallejo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a service sorority founded in 1913. She recently celebrated over 35 years of being in the illustrious sisterhood and retired from the Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) after more than 37 years of dedicated service and teaching thousands of students in 2011.

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, CohenBowman came to Vallejo at two months old. Attending all Vallejo schools, Cohen-Bowman obtained a B.A. from San Jose State University, a Master's in Administration from San Francisco

Ms. Cohen-Bowman is one of the founding members of the Willie B. Adkins Scholarship Program (formerly the Tanner Project), a comprehensive community/district co-funded support program for all high school students and their parents, aimed at increasing the number of VCUSD students enrolled in college.

Ms. Cohen Bowman has been recognized for her tireless work as an educator and in the community through proclamations from the City of Vallejo, Solano County, and various local and state officials. In addition to her role as an educator and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Ms. Cohen-Bowman is on the board of directors for Fighting Back Partnership, a non-profit organization "committed to preventing and ending poverty and its effects" in Vallejo and throughout Solano County, a member of the Solano

County Chapter of The Links, Inc., one of the nation's oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture, and economic survival of African Americans, and a member of the National Council of Negro Women, whose mission is to lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families and communities.

After retirement, Cohen-Bowman was appointed the Interim Associate Vice President of Human Resources at Solano Community College. Later, becoming a recruiter for the Association of CA School Administrators, Ms. Cohen-Bowman now serves as co-Executive Director of West Contra Costa Administrators Association, and continuing to help students and administrators in VCUSD as a Substitute Administrator. Ms. Cohen-Bowman is also an entrepreneur, operating her own educational consulting business. Of the many roles she has possessed, her most significant accomplishment is being a mom to Shayla and grandmother to Xavier.

Waterfront Weekend Gives Back to the Community...

AND IS SEEKING 2023 BENEFICIARIES

The Vallejo Waterfront Weekend’s (VWW) Executive Board of Directors, along with numerous committee members and City Representatives, announced this past Tuesday that they distributed $30,000 to their 2022 beneficiaries.

These beneficiaries include 7 Generations Intertribal Council, Genesis House, Greater Vallejo Park, Recreation & Open Space Foundation, Humane Society of the North Bay, Leaf of Life, Love Is, The Coach Sarna NFL Flag Football League, Vallejo Police Activities League (PAL), Vallejo Community Access Television (VCAT), and Vallejo Education Business Alliance (VEBA). These non-profit organizations provide valuable services and resources to our Vallejo community!

Additionally, planning is officially underway for the 9th Annual Vallejo Waterfront Weekend, held the first weekend of October. VWW has begun accepting proposals from Vallejo non-profits interested in being included as one of our 2023 beneficiaries.

The Vallejo Waterfront Weekend supports all non-profits but is looking specifically for 501(c)3 organizations located in Vallejo to be their 2023 beneficiaries. Requirements include active involvement in planning for the event and providing volunteer assistance.

To apply to be a 2023 beneficiary, please visit their website at www.vallejowaterfrontweekend. com after February 21st, or call (707) 738-6964 to request a Beneficiary Proposal Form, due by March 15, 2023.

Beneficiaries will be selected by April 15, 2023.

Vallejo Artist Highlight

Douglass C. Brown is a Vallejo glass artist on a personal mission to share hot glass experiences with all those interested in seeing and learning about the process of blowing and sculpting hot glass.

Douglass operates two glass-blowing studios in the Bay Area, the first studio is located in Half Moon Bay, and the second is on Mare Island,

located in the Coal Sheds on the waterfront.

He is also involved with the Glass Troubadours, a mobile glass-blowing studio designed to do single events such as parties and craft shows or for medium to long-term stays on campuses, wineries, and other locations.

The Land

of Midnight Sun Shines at The Empress Theater

Maestro Thomas Conlin will lead the Vallejo Festival Orchestra on a musical journey to “The Land of Midnight Sun”, on Saturday, March 11 at Vallejo’s historic Empress Theatre. Soprano Katherine Whyte will join conlin and the VFO for the San Francisco Bay Area premieres of six orchestrated songs by Scandinavia’s greatest composer, Jean Sibelius.

Founded by Conlin in 2020, the Vallejo Festival Orchestra is the resident ensemble of the Vallejo Center for the Arts. Performances at the acoustically perfect Empress Theater have included “Three Tenors! The Next Generation”, “From Vienna with Love,” “The Greatest Wagner Concern Ever”, and “Tchaikovsky’s Star-Crossed Lovers.” All were played to standing-room-only audiences.
