WELCOME TO
GRAND PARK!
The Grand Park sports campus is a key part of an overall strategy to make Westfield a premier destination for youth sports and families. The park continues to exceed its attendance projections and its economic impact has already been realized by many local businesses. The 400-acre sports campus hosts a full range of championship-level outdoor facilities for baseball, softball and field sports including soccer, football, field hockey and lacrosse. The Grand Park Events Center, our indoor sports facility and convention space, also allows us to accommodate year-round play. Future development around the campus will feature dining, retail and entertainment venues geared toward supporting and enhancing the family sports atmosphere. Westfield has been named one of the “Top Ten Places to Raise a Family” by Family Circle Magazine and has consistently been recognized as one of the best places to live in Indiana and the country. We certainly agree! While you’re in Westfield, we encourage you to visit our downtown. Here, you’ll find great local restaurants, pubs and shops to fill your free time with a unique Westfield experience. You can also enjoy our award-winning trails and parks system, too. Feel free to download our City app (available in the App Store and GooglePlay). Thank you again for visiting Grand Park and the Westfield community. We hope you’ll be back often. Sincerely,
Andy Cook Mayor

WESTFIEL THE HISTORY OF SPORTS IN
WESTFIELD W
estfield’s Grand Park Sports Campus is a force to be reckoned with in the world of youth travel sports. But a passion for sports and love of the game is nothing new to this small community ten minutes north of Indianapolis. In 2016, Westfield High School’s football team battled it out to take home its first state title. After the exciting win, Coach Jake Gilbert said “All the support from our administration and community and commitment these kids have made is just incredible.”
directors from the community who live and breathe Westfield sports. WYSA was formed in 1982, and quickly grew in popularity in the Westfield community. In 2014 the Club became an affiliate of the Chicago Fire MLS Club, merging with Carmel United Soccer Club to form Indiana Fire Juniors. Following the creation of Grand Park, both Indiana Fire Juniors and WYSA began using Grand Park fields for training and game play.
Over the years, local sports businesses have also thrived in the Westfield community. Renowned baseball and softball Westfield’s sports tradition can also be seen training facility, RoundTripper Academy is in the community based Westfield Youth entering its 25th year in business offering Sports, Inc. The development and growth of Grand Park was the next logical step as the Indy area continued to capitalize on its dominance in the sports tourism industry. While visitors travel to Grand Park for tournaments and showcases, they also can tour the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Lucas Oil Stadium, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Victory Field, NCAA Hall of Champions and Hoosier Park Racing and Casino.
Grand Park is also the official practice turf for the Indy Eleven, Indiana’s professional soccer team. In 2016 the sports campus hosted the Big Ten Men’s Soccer

WHY GRAND PARK?
W
estfield has always been a small town with a BIG heart.
When Andy Cook became Mayor of Westfield he knew the city tax rate was high because there wasn’t an industry to support the community’s financial needs. However, instead of luring in manufacturing companies or a larger business district, Mayor Cook focused on building upon Westfield’s strengths. Westfield is about family. The community has the highest number of families per capita in the state of Indiana. The growing population of families also created a demand on Westfield’s existing sports fields. Mayor Cook made it his goal to secure a place for youth sports to call their home and make it Westfield’s industry. Shortly thereafter, Mayor Cook attended a workshop held by Hamilton County Tourism. Sports tourism was one of the primary topics and the mayor learned that the sports tourism industry amounts to more than $7 billion annually. The Westfield Sports Commission was formed to vet the idea of pursuing the youth sports industry and determine the
10
feasibility of Grand Park. The Commission included citizens, representatives of Westfield Youth Soccer Association (WYSA) and Westfield Youth Sports Incorporated (WYSI) as well as other community members. They met regularly over the course of two years. Through the commission and the comprehensive study, it was decided that the park should be 350-400 acres and feature facilities for baseball/softball, soccer, rugby and field hockey. The sports were selected based on the cost of investing in the physical facilities and their ability to attract visitors/spectators. The commission also analyzed the addition of an indoor facility, which is now known as the Grand Park Events Center. The 370,000 square foot building transforms Grand Park into a year round facility which is key in attracting hotels and additional commercial development. So, Why Grand Park? The short answer is to serve the needs of the local citizens and to create an industry for the City of Westfield. Above: Grand Park ribbon cutting ceremony at grand opening.

A FARMER’S LEGACY
I
magine a time when farms dominated the landscape of Westfield.
Bill Wood began farming in Westfield in 1941, on land just south of 191st Street and West of US 31. Over the years the Wood farm grew to include roughly 500 acres, producing corn, grain and livestock. Bill saw the transition from draft horse power to tractor power, the introduction of hybrid seed corn, herbicides, advanced tilling practices, and the transition from single-row corn pickers to harvesters capable of gathering six to eight rows at a time.
the family began thinking about how their land could serve a larger goal than simply another housing addition or shopping center. “We knew whatever was going to go in, it should be something pretty significant because that was going to be our family’s legacy.” When they learned about Grand Park, the Wood family offered to sell their land for the nearly 400-acre youth sports campus. “I get a little emotional thinking about it,” Craig says. “The day before the groundbreaking, I walked around that ground because I knew it was going to change.”
Craig & Sandra Wood at Grand Park and (above) as a child with his father, Bill Wood.
“To witness that and be a part of that is pretty amazing and significant,” says Bill’s son, Craig.
Craig Wood joined the family farm after graduating from Purdue with a degree in agriculture in 1978. “Yes, there were some other things I probably could’ve done,” Wood says, “but it’s been a good life for us.” About 20 years ago developers began eyeing Westfield as the next major housing market. After 8 or 10 different builders had approached the family with proposals,
26
Craig and his wife, Sandy, still run a small farming operation on the remaining farm land near Grand Park selling mostly freezer beef and pork. The two met in what Wood describes as a “fairy tale story”: during a choir tour of Western Europe. She was a “city girl from Colorado,” Craig says, but when she moved to the farm, “she caught on pretty quick.”

SAFETY A TOP PRIORITY AT GRAND PARK
Grand Park Staff trained in CPR and use of AEDs Within the sports campus, Grand Park maintains 14 AEDs and provides training for park staff and support staff on how to administer CPR and use the AEDs in the event of a cardiac emergency. According to the American Red Cross, all Americans should be within four minutes of an AED and someone trained to use it. The Red Cross estimates that improved training and access to AEDs could save 50,000 lives each year. At Grand Park, the importance of having onsite AEDs was on display in May 2016
when a 13-year-old boy playing in a baseball game was struck in the chest by the ball, causing his heart to stop. Bystanders rushed to his aid to administer CPR and used the AED from one of the concession stands, which contributed to saving his life. “As a premier destination for youth sports, we place safety at the forefront,” said Westfield Mayor Andy Cook. “The investment in onsite AEDs and the continued training of our staff and partner organizations further reinforces that commitment.”

GRAND JUNCTION

rand Junction is more than an idea. It’s more than a vision. It’s more than a transformative movement making waves in Westfield. This project is a catalyst for connections, and it has the power to create a downtown center like this area has never seen before. A place people want to visit. A place residents feel proud to claim as their own. The Grand Junction Park and Plaza will be the focal point and the new heart of our downtown. Work began this year on the extension of Mill Street, which will serve as the southern perimeter of the park. This portion of the project also included a flood mitigation component that will alleviate

the risk for residents and businesses in Westfield’s downtown. While you’re in Westfield, stop by the downtown and visit our restaurants and businesses in the Grand Junction area. And we invite you to come back as we continue to transform this idea for connecting our community into a reality you’ll want to visit over and over again.
