DAME ZAHA HADID 1950 - 2016

Gill Sherry

O

ne of the world’s most successful female architects, Dame Zaha Hadid, died on 31st March, aged 65. Dame Zaha was being treated for Bronchitis in a Miami hospital when she suffered a fatal heart attack. The news came as a great shock to all who knew her and is a sad loss indeed for the world of architecture and design. As a tribute to this extraordinarylady, we are featuring a selection of her most majestic projects. Born in Baghdad in 1950, the Iraqi-British talent began her architectural journey in 1979. Having established her own London based practice, she went on to win a number of high profile commissions, designing some of the world’s most unique and distinctive structures. With her formidable personality and extravagant designs, she certainly ruffled a few feathers during her long and distinguished career. However, with over 20 major honors and awards to her name, her achievements speak for themselves. She was the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize in 2004 and the first woman to receive the Royal Institute of British Architects Gold Medal in 2016. In 2012, she was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Her first major built commission was the Vitra Fire Station in Weil am Rhein, Germany, earning her well-deserved international

recognition and catapulting her to the forefront of contemporary world architecture. Her brilliant but varied projects included everything from office towers to bridges and from libraries to museums. She designed the intricate Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi, the ‘double pebble’ Guangzhou opera house in China, the Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London and the award winning Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg, Germany; the latter being described as a ‘hypnotic work of architecture’. But it wasn’t just building structures she excelled in, she also had a flair for interior architecture and product design. Her repertoire included the Moon System Sofa designed for the Italian furniture manufacturer, B&B Italia, as well as an advanced, high-fashion boot for the clothing brand Lacoste. In 1999, she even designed the stage set for the Pet Shop Boys’ Nightlife world tour. With ongoing projects stretching across the globe, her passing is a major blow for the future skylines of cities the world over. However, with 400 employees at her London practice working at all scales and in all sectors, one can only hope that her highly expressive creations of sweeping forms, fragmented geometry and pure architectural genius, will live on.

A MIND IN TURMOIL

ATARAXIA

Mashael Ali Sadeq A Kuwaiti hybrid studying medicine abroad. The power of the human mind captivates me. I write what I have envisioned in my mind, felt within my heart and seen with my very own eyes. I believe this modern world has destroyed us. I aspire to stand side by side with you as we paint the path of re-ordering what has been disordered by sharing points that have helped me personally. I believe the most important step for us in this journey, is to first acknowledge all that has been silenced in the past. Together, we can conquer the destroyed.

S

ecurity and calmness are two very appealing states of existence to the human mind. Should a situation present itself in this manner, the mind is lured in almost hypnotically. Perhaps this acquired need to achieve the quintessence state of placidity; ataraxia, is a subconscious cry for help to balance out the human mind in this calamity of a ‘real’ world.

the tranquility of a mere possibility that this could be a consistent state of existence for it, and less so to any other detail. It is through this neglect that the mind becomes more susceptible to accepting a projected image as a real one stemmed by the fantasy of everlasting ataraxia. A conditioned mind that has been set to admire any fantasy can be easily created or recreated.

Ataraxia is a Greek word that is defined as a state of consciousness free from the negative impact of preoccupations and worry. With that being clarified, we can all agree that we all yearn for ataraxia; even a temporary bargain is powerful enough to captivate us. It has become a personal goal for every individual to achieve so in some, if not every aspect of life.

Ataraxia is an art indeed. The mind is provoked into disassociating from the realms of factual, gradually creating an interpersonal conflict of some sort. As a result, the mind in the yearning phase of ataraxia exists in forced frustration which is the key element that strips us from conscious awareness and control. Once frustration is set, the mind fails to form a logical pattern of successful monolog creating a conflict between reality and the painted image of reality. This is the essence of mind control at its finest.

When the mind is under the sedation of makebelief security, it becomes more attentive to

APRIL, 2016

The sad truth is, we exist in an unusual dimension, constantly seeking validation and recognition from a flawed, corrupt system to define our intentional behavior. As such, personal identity has become associated with community perception; we are told who we are, what we are etc. Consequently, the subconscious and conscious parts of our identity exist in an ongoing state of contradiction, which in turn leads us to the single most ultimate self-inflicted disaster; negating the essence of our true self. The development of this inner conflict has given rise to the proposition of our grand facade, our current grand epidemic: Psychological Disorders. Ironically, ataraxia is merely a hypnotizing fantasy painted in the eyes of a primitive man who lives in a modern world that advertises the mockery of a consciousness it abides by. Thus, modernized man will inadequately seek to apply ataraxia, that he fails to comprehend correctly, without noticing that he has deprived the primitive soul of ever growing from the publicly shunned wonders of its rival; ataxia. Before we continue, I think it is vital to further explain certain terms used in this article. Based on the Oxford dictionary, consciousness has two definitions. Physiologically, it is “the state of being aware and responsive to one’s surroundings” and in the philosophical sense, it means “The fact of awareness by the mind of itself and the world”. Unfortunately, this modern world, with all of its profanities, has conditioned man to fail seeing beyond the former definition. This modern world has taught man that consciousness is of uttermost importance to reach the ultimate level of humanity; the Zen soul, but advertises a rather taboo definition of it. This modern world celebrates ‘the new world order’, but what is order if there exists in the world societies that are fighting for survival, and others that acknowledge hardship in these societies, but believe ataraxia is associated with whether ‘your eyeliner is on fleek or not’? This modern world foolishly parades the era of ‘new age enlightenment’, and we ignorantly associate ourselves with this higher level of human being. What is this enlightenment that we celebrate where there still exists in our very own ‘enlightened, modernized and sophisticated’ society unjust rules that give the majority of its people, who religiously abide by its traditional moral conduct of normal, the right to oppress the minority, who fail to abide by these ridiculous rules, and deprive them of their right to be. We celebrate profanities that have given rise to new age needs, and the more man needs, the more he finds himself distressed at the idea of keeping up with his surroundings. In other words, I have come to notice that the longer the list of our irrelevant needs, the unhappier we tend to be; teenagers who need to undergo plastic surgery because they need to feel prettier, and God forbid should feeling prettier not be achieved, should the world burn down and emptiness latches onto the soul of this hopeless, miserable teenager. We ironically claim to be on the path of enlightenment, doing so with cold, uncompassionate, unforgiving hearts that never see beyond ‘me, myself and I’. Ataraxia, which could only possibly reside on the roads that lead to the latter definition, is the yearning that has been painted upon our eyes because of this utterly distressing world. Ataxia originated in the late 19th century from Greek ‘a-’ meaning without, and ‘-taxia’ which stands for order. Thus, originally, it meant irregularity and disorder. This definition is also based on the Oxford dictionary. What strikes me as painfully comical is the existence of a psychological disorder called ‘Ataraxia’, in which the patient lives in a completely carefree world, without even the slightest sign of worry or preoccupation. Thus, what the mind actually needs in this modern world is ataxia first, and only when so is successfully achieved, can it

hope for the wonders of everlasting ataraxia. You see, this modern conditioned mind must flow irregularly from what has become regular in its present existence. Modern man must disorder his mind from this new world’s order, and only then could the mind start to redefine its primitive needs. Within doing so successfully, and purging the soul free from this modern world’s tyrant definition of a shallow consciousness and ataraxia, could modern man’s journey towards infallible consciousness begin. The modern world advertises the need for ataraxia but fails to explain that under the circumstances of its present nature, order could only possibly stem from disorder. A positive journey towards selfdiscovery, and more importantly, a personal identity is the outcome of a disordered modern mind and a soul that has hit rock bottom. Many of us fail to see opportunity and beauty that are associated with hitting rock bottom. In fact, those amongst us who have been fortunate enough to experience so should feel privileged! We must not become so paralyzed with confusion as to how we have become so empty, falling in the ‘disassociation and depersonalization’ cycle, never growing beyond so. Doing so only forces us to completely forget that there is an alternative route, called ataxia, which serves as the initial step towards ataraxia and consciousness that the subconscious has been screaming in vain for. Conscious awareness is feeling empty but being able to view your inner core through your very own eyes, free of conditioning and outside influences. It is feeling empty and being able to tell yourself ‘I have come to be an empty ornament, but I yearn to re-fill this ornament with whatever is suitable for my growth in the next stages of life. Had I been on the righteous path, I would not have arrived to this point so empty, thus, I know I do not need what I am without.’ This modern world has condemned humanity to exist in a state of mass hypnosis. We somehow have achieved an obscene sense of ataraxia, believing that everything is actually fine, throughout its chaos and havoc. Perhaps our arrogance and ignorance allow us to make such claims definitive when in fact they should be hopeful; i.e. everything is eventually going to be alright. It would be quite bizarre to continue believing that security is real in this chaotic world, to carry on with this routine tranquility, falsely claiming this mere form of unsatisfactory state of being is ataraxia achieved. This preposterous fantasy is a contributing factor to the façade of this ‘new world order’ and the inactivity of ‘modern mind’. Yes. It all sounds so easy when it is read out. You could memorize this article off by heart, but that will not take you very far. You can tell a child that two oranges plus two oranges will add up to four, but that has become a memorized fact that can be easily forgotten. However, if a child experiences holding two oranges in one hand, and two in the other, the child can personally count all and would believe the total is four. Experience creates a belief system in which an individual can establish growth and firm understanding of matters. Surely I am not suggesting that we create problems for ourselves in order to feel empty, to ultimately grow. No. I am suggesting that should those feelings ever cross our paths, and they will, given the circumstances of our present world, we should have faith in the strength that is already present within and be able to see beyond what meets the eye. I do not mean to be quite the pessimist by stating that you will, on the contrary, I am here to celebrate that experience, whether you have already gone through it, are experiencing it, or will do. I celebrate it because your mind has seen beyond this illusion of a real world. I celebrate your acknowledgement. I celebrate the moment when acknowledging is no longer satisfactory, and feelings of ‘negativity’ kick in, for you are now in the humanoid-to-human process. Welcome back. CITYPAGESKUWAIT.COM

GREAT EXPECTATIONS, GREAT DISAPPOINTMENTS "It is not, perhaps, an entirely happy situation after all, to gain something that has been wanted for long years. The object itself, once achieved, is often found not to be exactly as anticipated. It has perhaps become tired and worn over time; flaws that had been overlooked for years are now all too apparent. One finds one does not know what to do with it at all" (from Jo Baker's Longbourn, P. 434). Tempted though I may be to dwell on the source of this quotation, I would rather reflect here on its familiar content, on this peculiar human feeling which most of us experience and which often seems to annoyingly deprive our newly attained pursuits of their pleasure. In her novel, Jo baker introduces her last chapter with these words to show the simple nature of one of her characters, whose success in marrying off her daughters secures her ultimate happiness. But being of a more complex nature than that, we often tend to be difficult to satisfy even when we actually manage to reach our long-awaited goals.

Nadeen Dakkak

Nadeen studied English Literature in Kuwait and England. She's interested in language, literature, film, theater and culture.

I think there are a number of reasons that could possibly explain why we are sometimes faced with such a disappointment. One of them is related to the distance separating us from our goals. We tend to perceive our desired goals from a single narrow perspective, overlooking other important aspects which, if known, could alter our feelings towards these goals. A simple longed-for object becomes exaggerated as a result; its points of beauty are magnified through the deceptive lenses of our dreamy eyes. In every daydream, its image is made richer and more colourful, and its dark flaws fade gradually until they vanish, only to appear

again once the object is close at hand. Whether this process of transformation happens consciously or unconsciously is a difficult question to ask, depending on each person's circumstances and expectations. What is probable, however, is that our lack of multiple perspectives and our short-sightedness are a primary cause of such a disappointment. Love stories that end with a tragic dissatisfaction are perhaps the most popular examples of how wants turn into burdens after long anticipation. Even more popular is the rather cliché expression ‘love is blind’ that maybe explains how people can be completely oblivious to the visible faults of their loved ones. Related to this is what I think is another important reason behind not being satisfied with what one has finally gained. Along with our own individual wants, society is undeniably important in shaping these wants and exaggerating them, if not creating them in the first place. Throughout childhood and teen years, every social environment with its specific cultural norms draws a certain image of the things that ought to be wanted and strived for, and of the inevitable pleasure and satisfaction which supposedly accompany these wants. In other words, it is so often the case that society decides what is worth wanting and what is not. It might also dictate how it must feel to reach these wants. This image gets cultivated along the years and is constantly emphasized until it becomes confused with individuals' own free wants. Think of a massive wedding and a beautiful white dress that are soon followed by a young bride's frustration at not having achieved what she had thought was going to be achieved by this plan. Think of a graduation ceremony where a student's family is more delighted than he is, and during which he contemplates unhappy future prospects with a degree he has no interest in. I think these two situations, amongst others, are all too familiar in a society where personal wants become submerged in the sea of collective goals and restrictive social aspirations. In such a case, it is not surprising that many of us are disappointed rather than satisfied after a long anticipation. After all, how can one be entirely happy after achieving something that is not really one's own choice? As I write this, I find myself drawing comfort from the fact that I too experience situations where objects are ‘found not to be exactly as anticipated’, but most importantly I am comforted by the knowledge that I cannot solve the problems of the world – at least not by an article. Therefore, I feel I can only offer two suggestions at this stage: that we should attempt viewing all the sides of an object before we think of it as a goal and build our happiness upon achieving it. Secondly, it would be a revolutionary step indeed to try our best to stand in the face of social pressure and prioritize our own wants, or at least, to think critically of the images which society beautifies for us before we make them our own.

ANYONE FOR

A

SQUASH?

new month and another new activity to throw myself into, following my previous success at spinning. This month, it’s all about squash. A quick internet search and a few phone calls found more than ten different locations in Kuwait where squash can be played, involving either club membership or hiring courts by the session. With my poor long suffering sports pal, we opted to play at the Crowne Plaza in Al Thuraya City, where I spend many hours each week waiting for my son at his karate lessons. Equipment can be provided at reception, but with rackets and balls costing as little as 10KD, we took the plunge and bought our own. Nothing is more of an incentive to try a new sport, than buying the equipment as a visual reminder of your efforts.

Ali Stewart Born in Cambridge, England, Ali enjoyed a career in the logistics and safety sector for 15 years. Following the birth of her son, she switched careers to pursue a life long love for education and teaching. Since moving to Kuwait in 2013, Ali’s interests include fitness, healthy living and running. From her University days she has maintained a passion for world history and creative writing, although thanks to her son, she can also now consider herself quite the expert on all things ‘Marvel super heroes’ and Karate related.

For those who know little about squash– or even worse, are busy wondering why I’m talking about a large orange vegetable – it is a racket sport that can be played with either two people (singles) or four people (doubles). Originating from Harrow, England in the early 1800s, it descended from the earlier game of ‘rackets’ that involved hitting a squeezable ball against a number of walls. Nowadays squash is played in fourwalled courts (often glass sided) where players take it in turns to strike the ball in the playable areas marked on the walls. Another internet search easily provided lots of information on the rules of the game, but this all seemed way too serious for two amateurs who just wanted to have some fun. The intricacies of understanding scoring systems and different types of shots felt like more effort than was necessary at this stage. For many years I was put off trying new sports or activities in fear of looking silly and not knowing how to play properly. My advice now is who cares? Have a go and see if you like it first. If you do, and you want to, there is plenty of time to learn more, whether it be through professional coaching or your own efforts. That’s the great thing about sport and exercise, who says it has to be serious? I will openly admit here and now, I exercise to counteract my love of Bounty bars and Jalapeno Pretzels. Squash is a fantastic workout sport, burning anything between 500 and 1,000 calories in an hour, depending upon your level of effort. It is an excellent cardiovascular exercise, working the upper and lower body. Your legs get a great workout through the efforts of the stop-start bursts of movement, and your arms and torso through swinging the racket. I can also allay any fears (which my sports pal did raise as a serious question) that you do not end up with one ’beefed up’ arm – like Popeye – through playing squash. With over twenty million registered squash players worldwide I am yet to find any evidence of alleged ’squash big arm syndrome’.

Some squash venues do stipulate the mandatory wearing of eye protection, especially for beginners or juniors; our venue did not. The protection is felt necessary by some due to the potential for harm from the ball hitting you at speed. A squash ball is made from two pieces of rubber compound glued and then buffed together. Quite hard as a result, the ball can ‘sting’ if it hits you and I did receive a couple of small bruises on the arm and leg. I wear contact lenses but if I wore glasses on court, I would definitely consider eye protection if taking up the sport more seriously. We did however find that squash can be quite the stress buster; nothing feels better than taking out your frustrations on a small rubber ball. I must confess there have been a couple of occasions where we have giggled and imagined different people as we strike the ball with all our might. Through trial and error – and then a little back-up research - we did discover that there are different types of squash balls for different atmospheric and playing conditions. More experienced players use a ‘Super’ slow ball (with 1 or 2 yellow dots) that has a very low bounce and is therefore harder to hit back in a rally. Advanced or intermediate players often use a slow ball (white dot) with a low bounce, whilst beginners and juniors use a fast ball (blue dot) with a very high bounce making for more running and an easier rally. Not knowing any of this we started with a white ball, but very quickly found we had more fun with a blue ball. Each ball also needs to be hit around a dozen times at the beginning of each session to warm up the ball; a cold ball we learned, has much less bounce. When you think about it, the same can be said of people, we definitely need to warm up properly before we have a better level of energy and bounce. Playing together as two beginners proved to be enormous fun, and time seemed to fly when on the court. I am a huge believer that exercise should be fun and not a chore; it’s about finding an activity you enjoy. I find it easy to forget that I am exercising when playing squash and we now play for an hour twice a week, with these proving to be two of the fastest hours of the week. I would also add that if you just want to use this activity as a workout it can be great fun practising rallies alone if you don’t have a partner or are waiting for one to arrive. I must stress that our definition of ‘playing’ is simply time spent on court and seeing how long we can keep a rally going for - plus how much fun we have. We have, as yet, no interest in keeping score or trying to play a proper game by defeating the other player. I did manage to cajole my husband into joining me, but between us he’s no fun; he hits the ball way too hard, is highly competitive and wants to keep score all the time. Far too serious for me - I think I’ll stick to my trusted best sports pal! My verdict on squash - a big thumbs up!

WHY MEN NEED BICYCLES

John MacArthur John MacArthur was born in England, but has Celtic ancestry, so loves to sing. Abandoning his choral training, he sings songs of love and loss, owning several antique acoustic guitars. He has degrees in physics, chemistry and mathematics, has studied theology and business management, so, in fine nomadic tradition, he can call several universities home. After seven years in Kuwait, he 'retired' and laughs at himself every morning, commuting between his Paris island home and country house in rural France where he lives with his wife, a food writer and stylist, and, perhaps soon, a dog, should he be allowed one. Much to her dismay, he is thinking of taking up the mandolin. He has written for various publications worldwide on whatever happens to catch his imagination.

I

once knew a man who, on the day of his sixtieth birthday, went out and bought himself a silvergrey Porsche with a luxurious black leather interior. It cost him a great deal of money and the therapists among us will be able to provide any number of reasons why he did it, hiding their gales of mirth behind encouraging smiles. Unless they themselves are sixty and male, in which case, their faces may take on a slightly greenish tinge. Apparently, he kept the car parked at work and never brought it home. He didn’t tell his wife because he knew she ‘wouldn’t understand’. She learned about it later, by accident, when she happened to answer a phone call about the insurance policy on the car. The man had been right: she didn’t understand and the subsequent conversation over dinner was quite lively. You see the kind of trouble a man can get himself into if he does not keep his backside firmly planted where it belongs? Where’s that? On the saddle of a bicycle. Of all machines, the bicycle is the most beautiful. Archimedes must be kicking himself because he didn’t invent it. The sweeping, almost Euclidean shape of the frame, the curves and the lines, the wheels, the saddle, the handlebars, the gleaming spokes: you would think

28

APRIL, 2016

it had been designed purely for aesthetic effect. But the beauty of the bicycle derives wholly from utility. It is a perfect unity of function and form, the beauty of nature translated into the medium of the machine. The bicycle is the most energy-efficient mode of transportation in the world. It uses energy even more efficiently than walking. Nature is perfected by grace, and the human body is perfected when it becomes a cycling machine, when those imperfect appendages, the legs, are united to pedals that turn the crank that turns the chain that turns the cog that turns the blessed wheel. To see a human body moving on a bicycle is to see the perfection of nature - and more than nature - poetry. Please remember this, dear reader, next time you open your mouth to pass judgment on a sweaty fat man dressed in Lycra heaving himself up a hill. If you cannot see his beauty, that is not his fault: you must pray for better eyes. If you cannot hear the perfect synchrony as the dérailleurs click, your ears are weak and faulty. Speaking of sweaty fat men, I happen to own a bicycle. It is capable, in the right hands, or perhaps legs, of navigating the most inhospitable terrain, with a carbon fibre monocoque body, state of the art drivetrain and what the manufacturer grandly calls ‘virtual pivot

point’ suspension. Together with the super, go-faster Lycra clothing, specialist helmet and shoes, it cost more than an upscale family holiday in the Maldives. At a certain age and at certain times in life a man feels instinctively the need to revenge himself upon his own life. He mentally revisits his youth, takes wild, improbable risks in an attempt to recover the adrenalin rush, so long past, yet without the physical apparatus he once had. I am no stranger to humiliation and being overtaken on my bicycle by twelve year olds who have breath to chatter endlessly to their friends while doing so does little for what remains of my tattered self-esteem. An acute capacity for self-disgust is, if I may say so, one of the strongest points of my emotional repertoire. As Freud got older he turned his thoughts from the familiar homely instincts of pleasure and pain to darker ruminations about the Todestrieb, the sinister ‘death drive’. Descending a steep winding trail on a mountain bike at speeds more usually seen from downhill ski racers, knowing that any tiny error might be one’s last, is a very gratifying form of sublimated revenge. If ever I do crash and die, the first thing I will say to myself afterwards will be: ‘Ha! Now then, we're even’, a kind of posthumous schadenfreude. Once when I was wheeling my bicycle out on to the street, the postman, a wizened tree-trunk of a man with thighs like a weightlifter, was making his rounds. He sat astride an old, black, British-made bicycle of the kind one used to see in English country villages being ridden by overweight policemen. I wasn’t quite quick enough. He stopped, blocking my path, and addressed me warmly: ‘Nice bike. Carbon, isn’t it? They didn’t look like that back in my day, I can tell you. I don’t ride much for pleasure anymore but if there’s one thing I learned from cycling it’s the value of water. Ah, now there's a thing for you! Water! I never really understood it, never really appreciated it properly, until I was on the bike. Even now, I always drink four litres of water every day. It’s the secret of eternal youth,’ said the grizzled old sage. ‘I’ve always had a powerful thirst, ever since I was born I suppose.’ At this point, he produced a plastic drink bottle from his pouch and said, ‘You see, I carry one of these around with me everywhere’. And I took the bottle from the bottle cage on my bicycle and toasted his health, and there

in the morning sunlight we drank a mouthful of water, brothers of the saddle. Then he handed me my mail – all bills - and went on his way. Falling off a bicycle is an art form. The carnage of a multiple pile-up at eighty kilometres an hour on the Tour de France, is, blessedly, not an adventure in which I have participated. But an unwary driver, probably texting his wife from his Porsche, once clipped my back wheel in a Parisian side street. I didn’t fall with balletic grace, instead, I sprawled. Little pieces of me and my bicycle clattered across the road. I was in shock as I peeled myself off the asphalt. My clothes were torn. The chain had come off. The water bottle had rolled into the gutter. My knee was bleeding and I think I had sprained my wrist. I don't need to tell you that it took a manly and heroic effort to resist the impulse to cry, to faint, to call out for my mother. But, like falling off a horse, the best thing to do is just to get back on. So, I did, despite the screeching of damaged gears and my own whimpering. People barely turned to look, indifferent as lizards. However, there’s still one little matter of great importance. Bikes are cheap to run. A gear train can be replaced using a single hex key for the cost of a decent meal. No oil changes or expensive visits to main dealer, no battery or exhaust replacement, just a little lubricant and a clean cloth. Once, the Beast, the limousine used by the President of the United States, over a million dollars’ worth of bulletproofing and armour plating, was in collision with a bicycle. The car was scratched and suffered six thousand dollars’ worth of paint damage. The bicycle had to have its handlebars straightened. That’s economy. There are days, let's face it, when things don’t turn out right. But, that’s OK. For me, a day was good before it ever started when I was up before dawn, gently pedalling in the cool, twinkling dark, watching the sun rise in flashing red and gold. If today everything else goes wrong, it will still have been worthwhile. And sometimes, when I am freewheeling down a long, straight road in the sunlight, the birds look down from their great height upon my whirling pedals, their little feathered faces flushed with envy.

THE MEANING OF

HAPPINESS

rom the moment of birth, there is yearning for happiness and an endless race towards it. It is considered as one of the greatest positive attributes. If we analyze our actions, we see that all of them are in some way or another, happiness oriented. Everyone wants to feel good and happy. When circumstances and events are to our liking we are happy, but when they are not, we feel miserable. There are people in this world who consider happiness as a dream hard to catch. Others may have all source of happiness around them but still cannot appreciate it. But the best of both worlds are the people that see their life as a happy place, appreciating what they have and living by hopes and dreams. It’s hard to measure happiness, but what makes these people happy? What makes them see life as a glass half full and others see the glass half empty? What makes some people smile and see the bright side of everything? To some happiness is a goal, but to others it is a means to an end. Being happy should not be the ultimate goal. The goal in life can vary from one person to another but the way to reach these goals should always be done with content. It is not right to say that love, kids, a nice job, a great home or having a big balance in the bank account would make me happy. Those can be ultimate goals but they should not be the reason for the happiness one seeks, for happiness should never be measured, it should be realized with everyday things

30

APRIL, 2016

that happen in life. So what makes people really happy? It’s the one thing they forget to think about, which is what they already have. As human beings, we tend to search for the things we don’t have and always believe that the grass is greener on the other side. However, this is not the case because the things that will make us happy are right there in front of us. We should acknowledge what we have now and not what we want to have or what other people have. When life turns around and takes us to a difficult path, it’s a sign - a sign to appreciate what we have. So instead of being miserable or disappointed, think and learn to appreciate the things you have now and try to live each moment with no regrets by looking on the bright side. What if we all try to become happy no matter what life throws at us? Remember, life will be life at the end of the day and being happy will depend only on us. Things can change to good or bad - that is life. We must learn to live with it, face it with a big smile, thank God for every moment, cherish the good and learn from the bad. Then, and only then, can a person wake up looking forward to the day. This is happiness because happiness is the road you take, not a destination.

Fajar P. Domingo Creating a new perception From the picturesque paddy fields and steep ravines of Ubud, to the bustling streets of densely populated Jakarta, Indonesia provides plenty of inspiration for graphic designer, Fajar P. Domingo. But his surroundings are only part of the story; Fajar’s success is built on a collage of belief, discipline and above all, love.

Please introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Fajar P. Domingo. I was born in Malang, a small, cold town on East Java, Indonesia. I grew up in Surabaya, capital city of East Java Province. I spent a couple of years working as a graphic designer on Ubud, Bali and now live in Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta. Tell us about your education. I received my Diploma in Graphic Design from Petra University, Surabaya, Indonesia. How did you get interested in art? When did you discover you had this special talent? Since I was 2-3 years old I guess. Like many kids I loved to draw on the wall in my parent’s house! I really liked magazines, scissors and glue when I was in elementary school, creating my own world from my sister’s and my aunt’s magazines. I’ve didn’t realize it was a talent at all until my neighbours wanted to pay to see my sketches when I was just 10 or 11 years old. Was your family supportive of your decision to go into design? Yes, they were very supportive - but they didn’t want me to be an artist! I have a relative who is an ‘artist-wannabe’ but cannot support his family. My dad didn’t want me to be an artist because of him. So I decided to go with graphic design instead. What sparks your inspiration? Life is so big, so very big that we can’t even imagine it all. Every day life always gives me inspiration. What are the highlights of your professional career? My boss gave me an office branch on Jakarta, which is a very crowded city. After living for a couple of years on the tropical island of Bali, he gave me the chance to develop a new office branch on Jakarta. If you only knew how different Jakarta is to Bali! Now, I live in Jakarta running my own small graphic design company. What do you call your form of art? I have no idea! They say it is collage art. I just love to combine pictures together to create a new perception of a life image. It is something familiar but with a different perception. Surrealism maybe? I don’t know! Tell us about your creative process? Life can give us anything we want, but only if we look close and carefully. Now, in the digital age, we can almost see what happens in the world in a second. I absorb many things and put it into art. What frustrates you about the design process? When I think my work is bad but other people like it a lot! What are some of the qualities you need to be a successful Design Director? Detail, discipline and meeting deadlines. And taste of course. What are the challenges associated with managing other creative minds? Each creative person has their own world. I have worked with many designers and I think the key is to understand and learn what they really want. It’s not easy, but I love the brainstorming process where ideas are combined.

36

APRIL, 2016

Tell us about a project where you really pushed the boundaries of design. Every project has its own difficulties. I can’t say that one project has been easier than others. What has been the most controversial project you’ve been involved in? None of them - until now I guess! Who are your most significant mentors? My latest boss. His name is Tanadi Santoso. What’s your favourite app or digital tool? I like ArtStudio - an app on my iPhone. How do you like to spend your free time? Watching movies and football games. What keeps you sane and on top of your game? I believe that life has its own nature and that you reap what you sow. How do you keep yourself developed, educated and up to date? Do you follow trends, or counter trends? In fact, are there things like art direction trends? Yes, I follow any culture trends. I need to know what is happening in the world. I like to create something and to make my own mark and I think I’m in the middle of that. Every age has its own style and art is the son of an age. With colour, for example, Pantone have a ‘colour of the year’ every year. What kind of legacy do you want to leave? A man who stands on his own two feet. What advice would you offer young designers looking to make their mark? Believe in yourself. Unlearn what you have learned in school and create your own idea. Your message for us at CityPages magazine: Life is big. It is impossible to know each other without love. Spread love to the world.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO...

H

ere we are again at the tail-end of the theatrical awards season. When I started writing this, preparations were still taking place for the most prestigious and eagerly awaited awards in the film industry - the 88th Academy Awards, more famously known as the Oscars. Everyone was on tenterhooks, wondering whether Leonardo de Caprio would walk away with the Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Revenant, thus claiming the trophy that had so far eluded him. And of course by now we all know the outcome. The ‘luvvies’ all got together in a sea of self-congratulation; winners were announced; the runners-up showed their considerable acting skills by putting on brave smiling faces in the inevitable postaward camera shots; speeches were made; dresses were paraded by the ladies and criticised by millions; ‘everyone who knows anyone’ partied until they dropped; and the newspapers and glossies drowned in the headlines and features which ensued. And then it was all over for another year.

Paul Tunbridge A professional Facilities Manager from England, and with work experience across mainland Europe before arriving in Kuwait in 2007 Paul's interests include architecture and gardening as well as creative writing and the arts in general.

I enjoy the spectacle of ceremony as much as the next guy, and to praise anybody’s achievements is to be commended. But I must confess that I think such occasions have now become a little excessive and indulgent. The spotlight is focused on some great actors and actresses, but they are already rewarded with incredibly large pay-packets which reflect the work they do, and who are rarely in need of even greater publicity and adulation. For me, it is the lesser-publicised awards that are more significant. Awards made in recognition of the abundance of talented people who work in the background to ensure the success of any production. Awards are given for costume design and sound, for make-up and cinematography; yet such awards often receive mere lip-service, or a brief credit in the end titles to acknowledge ‘other awards received this evening’ instead of promoting their significant importance. How many readers are even aware, for example, that there is a second academy Award Ceremony each year for technical achievements in the world of cinematography? Every year, the Academy hosts a special awards ceremony in honour of individuals whose achievements demonstrate a proven record of contributing significant value to the process of making motion pictures. For the 16th consecutive year, for example, Autodesk Digital Entertainment Creation tools were used on a Best Visual Effects Oscar–winning movie. Autodesk technology was also used to shape Academy Awardwinning and nominated films in the category ‘Achievement in Visual Effects’. This year the Company more widely known for its comprehensive architectural and engineering design software received a Scientific and Technical

38

APRIL, 2016

Achievement Award (Sci-Tech Award) for Shotgun RV from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as well as a Technical Emmy for its MotionBuilder product from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Not only that, in the Best Visual Effects category of the recent Academy Awards, all five nominees – Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant and Star Wars: The Force Awakens – were created with help from Autodesk Maya and Shotgun Software and, in some cases, benefitted from additional technology supplied by the Company. Without such revolutionary technology, the nominated and awardwinning films would not have had the same visual presence that we all witnessed on the screen, and the actors may not have shone as brightly as they did. Let’s hope that in future years, the unseen experts who work so often in the background are afforded a more important place in the overall awards. I doubt that will happen, as they don’t have the mass celebrity appeal that TV and Social News coverage demands. Looking back, I offer my congratulations to all the winners of 2016, and to those of past years. And in closing, I attach a photo taken just a few years ago of a genuine Oscar statuette in the clammy hands of one very humble, yet proud, scribbler. And yes, I can confirm that the Statuette really is as heavy as everyone suggests!

TOP FIVE ‘MUSTS’ FOR

BANGKOK

A

lively city with something around every corner, Bangkok is a clash of tradition and modern. Movies like Hangover II and the cult classic Bangkok Dangerous have shown various aspect of this immense city. But they cannot begin to tell you the whole story of everything this city has to offer. So book your tickets and get ready for a feast for the senses. 1. The MUST see…Grand Palace. Simply amazing. With three sections and a literal gem to see in the Emerald Buddha, this is a must see for everyone. Please don’t wear sandals or shorts for your visit here and ladies, cover your shoulders. Also don’t fall prey to scammers who loiter around the sides of the palace grounds telling unsuspecting tourists that it is closed. It is open daily until 3.30pm. http:// www.tourismthailand.org/Attraction/The-GrandPalace--52 2. The MUST eat…Everywhere you turn there will be restaurants. With thousands upon thousands to choose from, there is one I cannot recommend more highly than Tealicous Bangkok. It’s tricky to find as it’s down a side alleyway, but across from State Tower. I recommend you enjoy lunch here before taking the elevator in State Tower up to the Skybar to enjoy the sunset. http://www.lebua.com/sky-bar

3. The MUST shop…The city has so many upscale malls it can be difficult to choose just one but Emporium Mall is both a sight to see as well as the place to shop. Located off the Phrom Phong Skytrain stop, this multitower complex has it all. From a state of the art movie theater to an entire building dedicated to fine dining and great views of the city, this is the place to spend your money. http://www.emporium.co.th 4. The MUST stay…Along the river and situated in the Khao San district is the Riva Surya Hotel. This beautiful hotel has a traditional theme in its décor, but don’t let that fool you. It has all of the modern amenities you would expect from a five star hotel as well as lots of sights, all within walking distance, to explore. Don’t forget to book a river tour as well. http://www.snhcollection.com/rivasurya 5. The MUST do off the beaten path…Just when you think you have seen your share of shopping malls, street stalls and market, nothing can prepare you for Chatuchak Market. With thousands of vendors and stalls you can easily get lost here. Open on the weekends it is definitely something you should check out if you have a day to kill. But take care, as with any crowded place there are pickpockets about. Don’t let this deter you from going and snagging some great bargains and that souvenir you just can’t leave Bangkok without. http://www.chatuchak.org/

As wife and a daughter, was it hard to be vegan? Not at all. As I said earlier, my parents are the coolest parents and they respect my choices. Actually, they help me stick to them by providing all the support there is. My hubby (I think he likes to show me off) is very proud of me and he supports my work tremendously. What are your hobbies? Cooking! I also love to read and dig for new information about healthy living, dealing with food addictions, and any new studies that can be of any help to the people I deal with to improve their lives. What is your favourite cuisine? I have no favourite cuisine as I appreciate them all. I love the authenticity of each cuisine and how dishes were created and combined. It is a lovely thing to understand, as ancient cultures knew way more about combining food than we would expect them to know.

What is the concept behind Jadi Morgen? Jadi Morgen is a plant based, wholesome and organic food company providing healthy and nutritious meals to help bodies heal. Most of us live a very fast paced life, constantly running around and forgetting about our basic needs. We have to learn how to take care of our bodies holistically as this is the only way to grow. We try to provide those people with modern Kuwait illnesses, with the help and support they need by offering real, wholesome food. What is good about vegan/vegetarian food? We try to set an example for people to learn that the cure for all of our modern-age ailments is prevention. So with a vegan, plant based diet we help our bodies fight against illnesses that people assume are common. I have seen so many cases of hormonal imbalances, hypertension or elevated cholesterol levels improving because people take control of their lives by following the simple steps we set for them to be in control of their lives again. People constantly tell me that they are afraid of change and that they are not sure if becoming a healthy eater is the path for them. I tell them I have

never met a person who chose this path of growth and health that went back to addictions and sickness. What is special about your dishes? Our dishes are absolutely delicious, 100% wholesome and vegan. We care a lot about the food served, insisting it is fresh, local and seasonal. We do not use anything processed, canned or frozen. The food you eat can either be your medicine or your poison so we try to be part of the solution and provide nature’s medicine. Where did you learn to cook? I am lucky to have a family full of cooking enthusiasts. My parents are my primary teachers; they taught us about food, its benefits and nutrients. They are the coolest parents! I also took Holistic cooking classes in the UK and USA as part of my journey into becoming a Health Coach. Becoming a Health Coach is the step that actually led to opening Jadi Morgen, as I was always asked to have such a place where people can be empowered by knowledge of real food. Witnessing the change in people’s lives is an indescribable feeling - it’s the best!

What were the challenges you faced as a female when you started the business? To be honest, I was very lucky and fortunate when the concept of Jadi Morgen was initiated. We didn’t have many issues and the paperwork went through smoothly. Later on as the company grew, we faced the same issues as everyone else when it came to the long procedures. Once you get the hang of it, you’re fine. What advice would you offer to any entrepreneur? Never give up on your dream! Working towards a dream and a business that actually helps change the world is a brilliant thing to do. Imagine waking up every morning to do what you love to do - work would definitely be a pleasure. Where do you see Kuwait going when it comes to health? I love the fact that Kuwait is now more open to the world wide health movement - witnessing it grow is amazing. The numbers of health enthusiasts in Kuwait is growing and that gives me hope that we are on the right track to take back our health.

A TASTE OF

ARMENIA

Thanks to an Armenian wedding One lovely morning last October, over a cup of coffee and a plate of pancakes, I was invited to a friend’s wedding in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. It was a blast, first because it’s such an honor to be invited to the most important day of someone’s life, and second because I love being invited to weddings of other nations. This is when almost all aspects of any culture are represented - music, dance, clothes, food, rituals etc. As usual, I was skeptical of my ability to attend. I thought about the wedding evening - I might be dining somewhere in Istanbul, featuring a hotel in Dubai, playing with my nephew in our house in Kuwait, or attending an event in Doha. Alternatively (and optimistically) I could be there at the wedding. Who knows? My schedule at the time was almost impossible to predict. As suspected, on the date of the wedding, I was supposed to be in Cappadocia, Turkey, featuring a recently opened boutique hotel. I told myself, ‘no wedding, khalas’. I was disappointed, as the groom is a very good friend of mine and Armenia is mystical to me. It’s the first Christian nation, they have a unique language and script, Yerevan has a splendid view of the mountains of Ararat (on which prophet Noah’s ark settled, arguably believed) and, most excitingly for me, Armenia has a lovely cuisine that is worth trying. So I thought, ‘no way am I not going’. I called my Istanbul-based travelling sponsors and asked them if they could include Yerevan for two nights in my itinerary. Of course they agreed - I only work with nice people! I arrived the afternoon of the wedding day, went to the hotel, put on my favourite suit, took some selfies and hurried to the venue. The wedding was happening in a historic carpet factory called Megerian, a small distance from the city. Very sensational, I thought. The bride

and groom had just arrived at the venue from the church where the ceremony started. Luckily I caught the moment of their entrance to the hall surrounded by singing and dancing family and friends. I loved it! The whole experience was a revelation to me; the wedding was dream like. I told myself, ‘now I know why I’m not yet married (one reason of course), our weddings are much less fun (sorry it is the truth in my opinion)’. The bride is a professional dancer so you can imagine how artistic and beautiful the whole setting was. Amidst the enchanted crowd, my eyes scanned the room for a large door from which, usually in such settings, the well-groomed servers come out with large trays of food. I was looking forward to encountering Armenian food in Armenia, even though I was expecting the same dishes served in Armenian restaurants in the Gulf. Actually, the food that came to the table was very different from what I had known. For example, I’d thought Armenia’s national dish would be meat but it is in fact fish. Although Armenia is a landlocked country, its Sevan trout fish is the most symbolic of its culture, geography and diet. Firstly because it’s only found in lake Sevan, hence the fish name, which is the largest fresh water, high-altitude lake in that region and secondly, because lake Sevan is a symbol of Armenia’s historic prosperity and current sovereignty. Apart from the delicious steamed trout and potato dish I enjoyed at the wedding, there were also different cheeses and salads made with beans and seasoned with distinctive spices that I have never tried anywhere else. I asked the people around me about the best places to try more authentic dishes around the city. Based on their recommendations, those of the hotel staff, and those of random people that I’d stopped and asked in the streets (yes, I do that), I came up with two places to go to. The first place was a very nice, busy restaurant where families, friends and couples enjoy going for the authentic ambience and the simple, diverse and hearty Caucasian dishes. I ordered ‘Khinkali’ which is steamed dough stuffed with minced meat, very similar to Chinese dumpling, and typical of Armenia and Georgia. It was good but not nearly as impressive as the food I had in the second place I went to - Tufenkian historic Yerevan Hotel. It is a classic boutique hotel and the first luxury hotel chain in Armenia, with a to-die-for fine dining restaurant on its ground floor, with a fire-place and a carpet shop next to it. The meal I had in that hotel was the jewel in the crown of my city tour. I called the chef once I arrived and asked him if someone comes to Armenia for the first time who has never tried the authentic Armenian cuisine, how would you impress them? I loved how calm and sure of himself he was while asking me what I normally eat and whether I have allergies or not. I told him ‘just feed me - but no pork!’ The waitress served the first dish of Sevan lake trout fish carpaccio which was something to savour rather than eat. The raw slices of trout were just perfect. The second dish consisted of perfectly shaped rectangular blocks of fried minced meat with crushed dried nuts and apricots - can you even imagine the taste? At that point I was looking forward to the main course - stuffed baby eggplant, zucchini and bell-pepper, a dish we all know from other cuisines, but in Armenia is cooked with simple and subtle spices and not over-sour from the excessive use of lemon and tomatoes. I realised that food is very seasonal in Armenia. They know how to harvest and preserve their vegetables, spices and grains from each season to use them throughout the year, as they have very harsh winters. They use locally raised livestock and fish from the fresh water lake Sevan, therefore nothing is imported or frozen, which is something highly appreciated in any cuisine. Sadly, I could not experience more of that, nor could I see much of the country as it was only a two night trip. However, I have captured the essence of the Armenian culture thanks to the Armenian wedding and my keenness on finding the top places to eat in Yerevan. CITYPAGESKUWAIT.COM

PRE AND POST-NATAL EXERCISE THE BENEFITS OF TRAINING DURING PREGNANCY

E

xercise during pregnancy is a brilliant way to stay healthy, feel great and benefit from being physically active. Maintaining a regular exercise routine during pregnancy - with the clearance of your doctor - has been associated with enhanced body image, better weight control, reduced risk for gestational diabetes, less bloating, fewer cases of lower back pain and a reduced risk of preeclampsia. This leads to improved psychological health, improved fetal development and helps prepare the mother for the demands of labor. If you were active before pregnancy then you can continue, with your doctor’s clearance, working at a light to moderate intensity. It is important to take into account the physical changes that are taking place within the body and the impact these changes will have on the baby while pregnant.

Jamie & Alana Karehana Jamie and Alana can be found at the Al Corniche Club and offer Biosignature Assessments (body fat assessment identifying possible hormonal imbalances) as well as their KarehanaKitchen 21 Day Meal Plan. Go to their website www.karehanafitness.com to learn more about them or email them at admin@karehanafitness.com for more information.

During pregnancy, the body undergoes a tremendous amount of change. Besides the increase in weight, a particular change that affects the body’s behavior towards exercise is the secretion of a hormone called relaxin. Relaxin is considered a pregnancy-specific hormone and its primary role is to prepare the endometrium and support the developing fetus. It also causes the muscles and joints in the pelvic area to relax and become more flexible, facilitating the accommodation of the growing fetus. Unfortunately, this relaxing effect is not unique to the abdominal or the pelvic region, but the entirety of joints and muscles in the body! The mother-to-be needs to take caution when stretching, avoid over stretching and only take movements to a specific range of motion within the joint. For cardiovascular and strength training a scale called the ‘rate of perceived exertion’ is used to understand how hard a pregnant woman should be working during exercise. Light to moderate intensity is generally recommended and anything between 5-7/10 RPE is considered safe. Thankfully a pregnant woman naturally becomes more efficient at cooling herself down while exercising but it is still extremely important to drink adequate fluids (particularly when exercising outdoors) and to avoid extreme heat. It is recommended to keep a cool flannel close by and wipe over radial arteries (wrist) once the temperature outside starts rising. Exercising to exhaustion should be avoided at all times. Following a program with gradual progression for each trimester, both cardiovascualrly and strength specific, is important as the pregnant woman changes rapidly with her posture, centre of gravity and movement patterns. If you are new to exercise take your time and ease into a fitness

regime that is attainable throughout pregnancy. Literature on strength training is somewhat limited. However, in an extensive, evidenced-based review of the subject, Brad Schoenfeld offers specific exercise guidelines for pregnant women. Acknowledging the limitations imposed by scarce research as well as the unique physiological conditions which occur during term, Schoenfeld concludes that women can safely engage in a specially designed strengthtraining program, provided there are no medical contraindications and the attending physician has given clearance. Core stability is emphasized, and training volume can range from 1 to 3 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions, with 2-minute rests in between. The benefits of strength training for the pregnant mother include: lReduced weight gain during pregnancy, especially the second half of pregnancy lLess retention and deposition of body fat lWeight stays within normal range lIncreased energy levels, positive attitude and self esteem lIncreased breathing efficiency and a longer time before fatigue doing day-to-day activities lBetter body image and more self confidence lDecreased likelihood of varicose veins, pregnancy induced diabetes and lower back pain lIncreased muscle strength lMore restful sleep and less exhaustion lHelps prevent constipation lImproved posture lImproved digestion and elimination During pregnancy some women are under the impression that they are eating for two. However, although the mother is growing a baby, eating for two isn’t quite necessary. Of course, you must gain a minimum amount of weight to ensure that your baby develops and grows properly, but putting on too much weight will increase your risk of developing gestational diabetes and hypertension, which may lead to preeclampsia. According to the Institute of Medicine (IoM), how much weight you should gain is directly related to your weight before pregnancy. The following table contains some general advice regarding the desirable weight gain and is based on data from the IoM:

stretched - traditional crunches and sit ups will only subject the muscle to contracting and separating more before healing properly from the inner unit to the outer abdominal muscle (the rectus abdominals). It is recommended that you begin with light activation, those with a caesarean section may not be able to feel or activate the deep muscles in the beginning but over time, with patience and practice, the muscle will start to reactivate.

It should be noted that the rate of weight gain should be as slow as possible; only 1-4 pounds in total for the first trimester and 2-4 pounds monthly after that, until delivery. Although attention is mostly given to the pre-natal period, the time after delivery is also critical. Training-wise, there are some physiological and anatomical features that are unique to a new mother’s body, and need to be taken into account. Diastasis Recti, as explained by Mayo Clinic’s Roger W. Harms, happens when the abdominal muscles separate in the middle after being stretched by the growing uterus. It usually occurs at the late stages of pregnancy but is more apparent right after delivery. This separation causes the abdominal muscles to weaken, resulting in back pain and interference with daily activities. The separated muscles usually come closer given time, but it may take up to a year after childbirth. There are certain risk factors that predispose to it: age over 35, large baby or multiple pregnancies, repeated pregnancies with no time to heal in between. If you develop Diastasis Recti following birth, you should completely avoid any abdominal crunchtype of exercise as it may get worse. Gentle exercises that involve traverse abdominal activation is recommended to help strengthen the muscles that have spent months being

In general, you should be patient and realistic with your goals regarding your post baby body. It has taken nine months of immense change to get here, so it’s not rational to expect to get back where you were within a few weeks. The realistic goal would be about 6-9 months. Start slow and gradually build up intensity according to your body’s response. Give your body the chance to heal following birth. It is advisable to wait at least six weeks after a normal delivery or eight-ten weeks following a c-section before you start training. Gentle walking is advised within a few weeks of both deliveries as long as there are no contraindications to training. Always keep an eye for alarming symptoms (urinary leak, blood etc.), in which case you should immediately stop and talk with your physician.

lexercise regularly, rather than intermittently lbegin aerobic exercise with low impact type exercise such as cycling, walking, swimming and low impact aerobics lgradually increase the workout duration and intensity as your fitness levels improve lvery important: REST, if feeling fatigued lcore stability exercises are very important - pelvic tilting can be done any time that you are standing, lying or sitting, making it an easy and gentle way to tone your abdominals lpelvic floor exercises are mandatory - long strong holds and quick flicks will get these muscles back into shape lmaintain hydration through the day and throughout the workout - if breastfeeding make sure that hydrating needs are met by increasing water intake

For women with a caesarean lminimal exercise should be done prior to the 6 week check up with your doctor lavoid sit ups and oblique exercises until 12 weeks post partum

Guidelines when returning to exercise: lobtain clearance from a medical professional before resuming a regular exercise program lthe new mother should listen to her body and not expect too much too soon lavoid exercise if you’re still bleeding or experiencing pain or discomfort

lcore stability and pelvic tilting exercises should be undertaken lrelaxin is still present in the body for up to 12 weeks, longer if the mother is breastfeeding. Therefore the muscles, joints and ligaments are susceptible to injury. For this reason overloading, over stretching and excessive exercise must be avoided

LOSE YOUR BELLY FAT

IN A BLINK!

Douglas Leandro & Iman Metwally

Douglas Leandro and Iman Metwally are passionate about health and fitness and want to share their passion with others. Each month, they will be encouraging our readers to find the motivation, determination and commitment to reach their goals. This month, they tell us how sleep can actually help us to lose weight! For more information and for online coaching, contact imanmetwally14@ mail.com

Y

es it’s that easy! Sleeping has a major influence and it's one of the main tools to help you lose weight. HOW?

Studies in Slow Wave Sleep (SWS) and general sleep hours, showed a link between a lack of sleep and insulin resistance. It showed an increase in brain activity in areas associated with food and stimulating hunger because of elevating levels of Ghrelin and decreasing levels of Leptin. Ghrelin Hormones: Known as the hunger hormone, this stimulates appetite - the higher the Ghrelin level, the hungrier you feel. Leptin Hormone: This hormone gives signals to your brain when your stomach is full. The study lasted only 3 weeks, with Group A sleeping less than 5 hours per day and Group B increasing their

58

sleep to 7 hours. Group A had decreased Leptin levels, increased cravings for fatty food and sugar, crashed during the day and gained weight. Group B had less mood swings, increased Ghrelin production, increased energy levels and decreased skin folds (body fat %). Regardless of physical activity and food choices, both groups were training daily. One of the biggest challenges we face while coaching people towards a healthier lifestyle or a change of body composition, is getting them to understand the importance of sleep. Our modern lifestyle with late nights/TV/smart phones/electronics etc has made us forget that for thousands of years we have been following the light and dark cycle of day and night. As the sun rises, our cortisol levels also rise, reaching their peak between 6am and 9am . They then drop a little but remain high through to midday, supporting daily activities. Cortisol levels start to drop significantly in the afternoon and as the sun goes down.

Decreasing cortisol levels allow the release of melatonin and increase the levels of growth and repair hormones. If we follow our natural sleep/wake cycle, we start winding down as the sun sets and should fall asleep by about 10pm. Physical repairs mostly take place when the body is asleep between 10pm and 2am. After 2am the immune and repair energies are more focused on mental repair (psychogenic) which lasts until we wake up.

Sleep well and #F!TURLIFE Check out our Full Body Program to help you lose weight. Goal: Weight loss Duration: 30 minutes Frequency: 3-4 per week A1- Back Squats A2- Machine Lat Pulldown A3- Lying Leg Curl A4- Dumbbell Overhead Press *Perform each exercise 12-15 repetitions with a moderate to heavy weight *Repeat this sequence for 5 sets. *Take 15 seconds break between each exercise and 90 seconds between each set *Control the movements *Keep yourself hydrated during the program *Use a note book to record your weights *Work as hard as you can – there is no tomorrow *Finish your workout with a light cardio, e.g. treadmill for a maximum of 10 minutes

Now it's time to take action!

*After 3 weeks of the program you can add 1 extra set to challenge yourself, then wait for the next phase of your Weight Loss Program.

Here are 7 tips to improve your sleep quality:

*Check our instagram accounts for videos of how to perform these exercises safely at imanmetwally or douglasleandroq8

1- Go to sleep by 10pm. If you need time to wind down before, go earlier to bed and try to read a book - not your iPad, an actual book. 2- Minimize your exposure to bright light for at least 2 hours before sleeping.

#F!TURLIFE and remain active Try and park your car at the far end of the parking lot, take the stairs instead of the elevator/escalator and walk as often as you can!

3- Your room is your cave. Sleep in a room that is completely dark. 4- Avoid the consumption of stimulus (caffeine, sugar and nicotine) after lunch time. 5- Drink plenty of water. As the body dehydrates, it responds as though it's experiencing stress. If your body is stressed it produces stress hormones which are awakening hormones. 6- Unplug all electrical devices in your bedroom - or keep them as far as possible from your bed. 7- Avoid exercising late at night, especially high intensity training as this increases your cortisol levels, making it difficult to get to sleep. You can also add supplements/herbs to help you with sleeping. For example: 1- Camomile 2-Ginseng 3- Valerian 4- Inositol 5- Taurine 6- Magnesium 7- Melatonin Sleeping plays a vital role in weight loss. It is not only about how hard you train or how clean you eat, it is also about how well you sleep.

YUMMY FOR THEIR LITTLE TUMMY:

DATES FOR BABIES

Sherifa Alasousi Owner of Sugar Box Bakery and winner of ‘Let's Cook’ competition in 2014, Sherifa loves exploring new flavors as well as new places. Having a baby changed her life, particularly when it came to food, but she soon realized that for a healthy baby, you just need to cook with love.

Can I feed my baby dates? Yes, dates can be introduced in your baby’s food once they are about 6 months old, or once solid or semisolid food has already started. The nutritional value found in dates is of significant importance for your baby’s development. By introducing dates to their diet, you can make sure they get the best nutrition. You can start adding dates one at a time, along with regular fruits. You can either mash the fruit or, even better, steam it along with other fruits. The sweet taste of dates will complement other fruits well and your baby will like it. Health benefits of dates: •Dates have high amounts of vitamins and minerals which are essential for your baby’s growth. As dates are high in calcium and magnesium, they are ideal for babies and toddlers whose bones are still developing. Potassium is another mineral which is found in dates and is important for your baby’s growth and brain development. •Dates help in eliminating parasitic organisms and help in establishing colonies of friendly bacteria in intestines. •Studies show that dates have significant liver protective properties. •Teething infants can be given ripened dates for better dental development. Chewing dates can strengthen their gums and their teeth can grow quicker and stronger.

60

APRIL, 2016

•Dates are very nourishing during fevers and smallpox. •The sweet pulp of dates is good for controlling dysentery. •Date fruit contains high amounts of dietary fiber. This is essential for adding bulk to the stool and promotes water absorption in the stool. Banana date rice pudding: (8-10 months) •1 cup cooked brown rice •1/2 cup banana purée •1/2 cup plain whole milk yogurt •1 date •dash of cinnamon Step 1: Combine ingredients and warm gently in a saucepan. Stir frequently. Step 2: Remove warmed pudding to a food processor or blender and blend as needed for a texture your baby will enjoy. Do not blend if serving to an older baby who can handle texture. Tip: To make the dates soft and easy to blend and puree, keep in hot water for about 10 minutes. Remember to remove the seed inside. Bon Appétit!

It really must be a shocking and scary experience for a baby. No wonder the moment they enter the world they are so shocked they start screaming. It is a natural reaction for a child to cry and show discomfort to the sudden change. As parents we can help make this change smoother and provide our child with the greatest comfort. This will not only benefit the baby but also help nurture the bond for parents too. It will have a reciprocal effect and most parents will be surprised how greatly they, as adults, benefit from it too. So, just as we follow tips and advice throughout our pregnancies, we can do the same during the first few months of our child’s life, known as the fourth trimester. Adopt the following simple practices and enjoy the amazing benefits: 1-Skin to skin: Let’s start with the very first moments. A baby should be immediately put on the mother’s (or father’s) chest completely naked. How it benefits the baby: ●Stabilization of the baby’s heart rate ●Improved (more regular) breathing pattern ●Improved oxygen saturation levels

●Gain in sleep time ●More rapid weight gain ●Decreased crying ●More successful breastfeeding episodes (helps initiate breastfeeding and increase the production of oxytocin - the hormone of love and bonding, which is abundant at birth and when breastfeeding). How it benefits you: ●Improved bonding, feelings of closeness with your baby ●Increased breast milk supply ●Increased confidence in ability to care for your baby ●Increased confidence that your baby is well cared for ●Increased sense of control. Skin to skin contact immediately post birth should be strongly encouraged - weighing and measuring is nowhere near as important as this ‘once in a lifetime attachment phase’ which should be as undisturbed as possible. Dim the lights and snuggle up to that gorgeous new little person. 2-Breastfeeding on demand: Yes, the benefits of breastfeeding are countless and a baby will be most disturbed if he is hungry or thirsty. But apart from hunger and thirst, a baby will seek the breast for increased skin to skin contact and sense of security. Sucking is very comforting to babies, making breastfeeding one of the most soothing activities a baby can do. It also helps to increase the supply for the mother, hence is equally beneficial for both. 3-Baby wearing: Similar to skin to skin, this helps the baby in multiple ways. It keeps the baby close and warm next to the parent; the movement is very similar to how the baby felt in the womb; and the security they feel keeps them content and calm. Studies have shown that ‘At the time of peak crying (6 weeks of age), infants who received supplemental carrying cried and fussed 43% less overall, and 51% less during the evening hours (4 PM to midnight)’ (www.bellybelly.com). Make sure to use a safe baby carrier and learn how to properly wear your baby to cherish the bonding and enjoy being hands free.

5-Swaddling: In the womb, your baby was in a confined secure space where they felt snug and embraced. Safely swaddling a baby can help accomplish that same secure feeling and result in a less fussy baby who sleeps better. 6-Motion: Swinging, car rides, stroller rides, swaying; all these are gentle motions that mimic the constant movement your baby was used to in the womb. They can all be very useful to help calm your baby. With so many options for providing gentle motion, you are likely to find one your baby will enjoy. These are some of the tips a parent can adopt during the fourth trimester to help make the scary transition into the big world easier for their baby. Not only will it result in a happier and calmer baby, it will also greatly help new parents to step into parenthood in a relaxed way and truly enjoy and cherish the precious moments and milestones.

4-White noise or shushing: Imagine the sights and sounds your baby was accustomed to inside your tummy. Yes, he or she could hear your voices and other surrounding sounds but they were muffled. What they heard most clearly were the rhythmic whooshing of your blood and your heart beat. Having a source of white noise (machine, vacuum, humming sound, shushing sound, etc) can greatly help calm the baby as they are similar to the sounds they are accustomed to.

BATHING IN THE

SPOTLIGHT

Paul Tunbridge A professional Facilities Manager from England, and with work experience across mainland Europe before arriving in Kuwait in 2007 Paul's interests include architecture and gardening as well as creative writing and the arts in general.

W

hat do you want from your bathroom? A place where you can quickly get clean and ready to face the world perhaps? Or a place where you can luxuriate, unwind and relax; somewhere where you can pamper yourself or, if you’re lucky, be pampered? Or maybe something in between? In preparation for styling the bathroom in my new villa as the construction nears completion, I started checking out some ideas online and became fixated with some of the photographs of bathrooms which can only be described as dream or fantasy rooms – some with amazingly stylish fixtures and fittings, and others with the most beautiful views. I have to remind myself that such bathrooms are few and far between, else I shall start to fill my imagination with some totally unrealistic ideas. So, before I get carried away with thoughts of recreating the sort of extravagant bathing suite where Cleopatra might have bathed in the milk of donkeys whilst surrounded by attentive and scantily robed servants, I decide to return to the real world where most residential properties are designed with bathrooms that are rarely big enough in which to swing a cat.

64

APRIL, 2016

To decide what I want from my own bathroom, I stop looking through the glossy pics and resolve to take a journey through the bathrooms of my past, hoping that this will remind me of what to avoid and maybe generate some inspiration too. As I share this journey with you let me start by relating the story oft-told by my mother, of bath nights when she was a child in the 1920s and 1930s. In those days a home would rarely have proper bathrooms – her family’s toilet was in an outdoor shed, and on the designated weekly bath night my grandmother would place a large tin tub in the middle of the kitchen floor, filling it by bucket with freshly heated water from atop the coal range boiler in preparation for when my grandfather returned home from work – he would always have to be the first to bathe in nice clean water and, when finished, the four children would bath in the same water, one after another, as the water became cooler and more dirty. The family home into which I was born, and in which I spent the first 18 years of my life, was a lot more modern although would seem incredibly dated now – the sort of typical bathroom you might find in one of the ‘living’ musea created to show today’s generation how people used to live in the 1950s and 60s. Our hand

basin was porcelain, and the bath enamelled iron, I believe. Oh, and we had a shower hose attachment which used to fit over the taps and produced a very weak trickle of water! But the best thing I remember about that bathroom was that the bath tub was deep enough for anyone to have a good soak; filled with hot water sprinkled with some Radox or bubblebath, I could lie back, shut my eyes and transport myself into a fantasy world until the skin on my fingers turned wrinkly. Skipping neatly past my days in lodgings and Halls of Residence whilst at university, the bathroom in my first bachelor apartment was fitted with an equally deep bath tub, but there was a total lack of natural daylight or ventilation which made the room quite dismal and unpleasant (note to self not to repeat this mistake). Moving on, I purchased my first house. It was a fairly small house with three bedrooms and a small bathroom. The bath was made of glassfibre and was less deep than my previous tubs although I could still fully lie beneath water level if I raised my legs up and rested my feet on the taps (that’s faucets, for any American readers out there). But then I made one of my best purchases and had a power shower installed over the bath. It transformed my life; my daily routine now started with the most exhilarating shower ever experienced! I knew instantly that I could never again live without having a decent shower unit in my home. And I also learnt not to put pattern transfers on the wall tiles – such a fashion disaster! Up until this time, I had only experienced bathrooms with pure white fixtures, though had used coloured towels and other colour co-ordinated accessories to make them less clinical. But I had not bargained for the onset of coloured bathroom suites that became a hit in the 80s. Hence my parents opted for an avocado coloured suite in their new home, and I chose a light grey in my next property, followed in my next home by a peach colour for one bathroom but returning to white for the second bathroom. The white was in my en-suite, which was a generous size with a bath tub and a separate shower cubicle and it was a pleasure to spend time in this room. My mistake here though, was to fit frilly blinds at the window, which were too fancy, ridiculously un-manly and attracted the dust! Moving onwards to the Netherlands, my first apartment was a rental that had just a wetroom with a shower in one corner such that the whole room was awash by the time I’d finished showering. Never again! I then bought a house in Amsterdam with two proper bathrooms which were average size but unspectacular and not particularly memorable. Then I moved to the coast, to a new property with no fitted bathrooms and a master bedroom on the ground floor overlooking an inner-courtyard garden. Choosing not to sleep on the ground floor, I fitted out the upstairs bathroom (adjacent to my bedroom) with a shower and fittings from Villeroy and Boch. It looked great, but I now wonder why

I wasted so much money on a brand name. Opting to create a fitness room in the master suite, I removed the door to the en-suite area in which I installed a walk-in shower behind a glass wall, and a large Jacuzzi bathtub. In the outer room was the multigym and a sauna. Lessons learnt here were threefold: I want another home sauna; I must ensure that any bathroom electrics are installed by a trusted professional and properly earthed (preferably before using items like a Jacuzzi) so as not to risk electrocuting myself; and not to use clear glass in bathroom windows (although this seems not to be a concern in Holland).

in Switzerland, I was booked into the Hôtel Palafitte in Neuchatel which was close to my office there. The guest rooms are pavilions built on stilts over the lake, with wonderful views across the lake to mountains beyond; the bathrooms are sited immediately behind the bed, and separated by wooden slats that individually rotate to provide a view through to the lake while soaking in the Jacuzzi bath. Check out the photos which I include here for a sense of the luxury I enjoyed for just the one night!

And now, for ladies who are passionate about their Jimmy Choos and Laboutins, I must share a photo of a must-have bathtub that I found in a local Kuwaiti store. I particularly love the way the tub fills with water from the heel (see if you can spot the entry slit). So, has my travel through bathrooms of yesteryear assisted me in my planning? Well, it has certainly helped remind me about some past mistakes to avoid, and I’ve already negotiated for a sauna and a Jacuzzi deep enough for water to cover my belly! Now to buy the rubber ducks……

Now here in Kuwait, I find that bath tubs are pretty shallow and even if I fill almost to the top with water, I cannot manage to fit my stomach below water level. Lesson is to buy a deeper bath or lose weight, but I think I know which is easier. For the time being though, I am happy to be blessed with good showers. I have thus far omitted to mention any hotel bathrooms. I have experienced many which are perfectly functional but unmemorable, but must highlight one which I will never forget. PUFFINESS

ou woke up this morning, looked in the mirror and realized your eyes looked like the ‘Powerpuff Girls’ (that’s if you’re old enough to remember the reference!). Puffy eyes are a common problem and even have a scientific name – periorbital edema. This is the accumulation of fluid around the eyes. The skin around the eyes is usually the thinnest on the body, therefore swelling and discoloration occurs. What causes puffy eyes? Here are some factors which influence ‘puffiness’: •over consumption of salt which causes fluid retention •allergies which increase inflammation and swelling •sinus and rhinitis problems •dehydration •fatigue, lack of sleep and stress •crying •pregnancy and menstruation, as there is always fluid retention during these stages •ageing - fatty tissues that protect the eyes inside the boney socket push forward and fill in spaces below the eye. This is when ‘bags’ start to form underneath the eyes. •hereditary features - puffy eyes may simply run in the family. Think Sylvester Stallone!

It is a known fact that eyes are puffier in the morning. This is due to the fact that we don't blink while we are asleep. Ordinary blinking is an essential action to help remove any trapped fluids to aid circulation in the eye. As soon as you wake-up and blink, the puffiness is reduced.

66

APRIL, 2016

However, we must not disregard puffy eyes as being mainly a cosmetic problem. Sometimes it can be an indicator to an underlying medical issue. •Thyroid issues – normally swelling is developed around the tissues of the eyes •Eye infections e.g. conjunctivitis •Dermatitis – inflammation of the skin •Kidney disorders - lead to general swelling throughout the body, including the eyes. Puffy eyes are unsightly; they ruin your favourite make-up and need to be banished! Here are a few easy solutions to alleviate those puffy eyes: •Use eye drops for allergies to reduce the irritation and associated swelling •Increase your fluid intake to prevent dehydration •Apply ice compressors on swollen lids •Cucumber slices or chilled tea-bags are a great home remedy •Use eye creams that are formulated for eye puffiness reduction •Eat potassium rich foods such as bananas to reduce excess fluid in the body •Splash cold water over your eyes and face •Cosmetic surgery is an option which needs to be discussed with your ophthalmologist. There are procedures which can remove extra fatty tissues in the eyelids to reduce the appearance of severe puffy eyes. •If it is hereditary, simply learn to love yourself and be grateful for all of your features! •If all else fails, visit The Gallery at International Optique to find the trendiest sunglasses, so those puffy eyes actually work as your style statement!

GREEN PEEL® Herbal Peeling EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF HERBS

The original GREEN PEEL® Herbal Peeling Treatment was invented over 60 years ago by Christine Schrammek and has been a worldwide success. The method was further medically developed and extended by her dermatologist daughter Dr. med. Christine Schrammek-Drusio. She provided us with 3 dermatologically developed nature-based treatment methods for every skin type and condition.

Unlike other peeling products the GREEN PEEL® herbs is a mixture of natural plant extracts that include enzymes, minerals and vitamins and do not contain synthetic abrasives or chemical substances. The herbal mixture is applied to the skin using a specialized massaging and pressure technique. The top skin layer is either gently stimulated or completely replaced in a peeling process depending on the amount of herbs and massage duration. The skin naturally renews itself from the inside-out without experiencing any side effects. Herbs play a major role in the process by improving skin’s circulation, enhancing oxygen supply and stimulating the cell metabolism.

GREEN PEEL® is individually tailored to treat: •Tired, pale & stressed skin •Oily, impure & acne skin •Open large pores & coarse complexion •Fine lines & wrinkles •Scars caused by acne, burns, accidents or surgery •Age spots, hyper-pigmentation & uneven skin tone •Aging & sagging facial contours •Stretch marks & sagging skin on the body (abdominal wall, upper arms, thighs) The GREEN PEEL® CLASSIC herbal peeling process takes five days which includes two visits to the skin therapist. On the first day the herbs are massaged into the skin with just the right amount of pressure for your skin. The massage with herbs removes the upper layers of the epidermis, accelerates cells regeneration, increases blood circulation, stimulates collagen production and boosts oxygen supply and the skin’s metabolism. The skin will turn slightly red after the herbs massage and you may experience a slight tingling sensation. This is absolutely normal and is a sign that the herbs are working. To support the process, specialized GREEN PEEL® Homecare products are advised to be used when at home. The set contains all products you need to provide your skin with the care it needs after the herbal peeling treatment. The products are individually tailored to your skin type and support the regeneration process. It is also important to follow the ‘do’s & don’ts’ guidelines to ensure maximum benefit from this peeling process.

NEW SKIN IN 5 DAYS The CLASSIC Herbal Peeling Treatment has been considered one of the best and most effective methods for treating many skin problems for decades. “The natural peeling causes visible skin rejuvenation, making it a real alternative to harsh chemical or acid-based methods” says Dr. med. Christine Schrammek-Drusio.

68

APRIL, 2016

Two or three days after the herbs have worked into the skin, it begins to peel visibly. Gradually, the top layers of the epidermis start to loosen while simultaneously pushing new and young cells to the skin’s surface. The Beauty Finish treatment takes place five days later. The peeled and renewed skin is now pampered and reinforced with special booster and renewal products. On this day the result is visible with improved complexion, clearly regenerated and firm fresh skin. Normally, the skin needs about 28 days to renew itself but the GREEN PEEL® method reduces this process to about 5 days.

REVITALIZING AND REGENERATIVE This treatment with natural herbs noticeably provides energy. It stimulates blood circulation and metabolism and thus leads to a natural improvement of the skin texture without any peeling effect. GREEN PEEL® Energy provides your skin with the natural energy it needs to renew the cells. It helps to reduce age-related skin appearances as well as impurities, scarring and pigment disorders. The treatment visibly improves the skin’s appearance and harmonizes its surface. It works ideally as repeated, intensive salon treatment several times a year.

STIMULATING AND REFRESHING With this method, there is no peeling effect. Instead, the skin is stimulated and refreshed with natural herbs. Blood circulation is stimulated, pores open and the skin is now able to optimally absorb the ingredients of the subsequent skin care. The complexion appears brighter and fresher. GREEN PEEL® Fresh-Up vitalizes the cells and your skin glows with new freshness. That’s why this treatment is the ideal problem solver for freshness-lacking tired skin and helps serve as an effective prevention against premature ageing and loss of elasticity even if your skin hasn’t started showing the signs of age yet. Following an extensive consultation and a comprehensive skin analysis, the right GREEN PEEL® treatment is advised. And to provide treatments with consistent quality worldwide, the GREEN PEEL® Herbal Peeling is only carried out by certified aestheticians.

The collection is dominated by simple and classic forms with emphasis on characteristic details. The forms used in the designing process come from a source of inspiration in the arts – the combination of the severity of natural linen with cotton lace and colour detail. The line consists also of clothing made of natural silk and cotton. A characteristic feature of the collection includes unique (because of copyrights) hand-painted designs that are a response to the individualism of women. The advantage of the brand is the uniqueness of the clothes, created for limited production, in response to the needs of the modern woman.

A MINOR IRRITATION

I

’m not known for my love of children. If you could buy them off the shelf I’d probably select one based on the same thought process as when I buy cheese – the more mature, the better. I’d certainly by-pass the younger variety, probably those aged from 0-16, and select a demure 17 year old who has outgrown teenage tantrums, doesn’t need help with homework, has already learned to drive, and will not embarrass me by saying something like ‘Mummy, why is that man so ugly?’ when out in public. Don’t get me wrong, I know they’re not all disobedient little horrors but the majority of those I come across in Kuwait appear to be just that. Most of them, it seems, like to torment myself and other like-minded adults in one of my favourite places, Marina Crescent. What better place to relax after a hard day at the office than this marina view venue, surrounded by palm trees and boats? A leisurely al-fresco meal followed by a stroll around the crescent is hard to beat and almost magical in this spring-time climate. Unfortunately, the spell is often broken by a stampede of adolescents who charge around the crescent on bicycles, hoverboards and other, equally inappropriate modes of transport, with total disregard for anyone in their path. This includes those carrying trays of food and drink from kitchens to outside tables. How these long-suffering members of staff manage to bite their tongues is beyond me. Their task is difficult enough without having to negotiate their way around misbehaving minors with nothing better to do. And we all know, of course, that if the unthinkable should happen and the tray ends up on the floor, it’s not the children who would be blamed, but the staff.

76

APRIL, 2016

Where are the parents when these unruly youngsters are running riot and causing chaos? More often than not, they’re sitting nearby, oblivious to the carnage being caused by their kids. Or are they? I suspect they’re not oblivious at all, but are actually well aware of the bedlam taking place around them. After observing the parents on more than one occasion, I’ve come to the conclusion that not only are they aware of the havoc being wreaked by their children, they think it’s perfectly acceptable behaviour. It’s clear that in their eyes, their cherubic offspring are perfectly entitled to run around Marina Crescent (and other hazardous venues) risking the health and safety of others and disturbing an otherwise idyllic environment. I’ve witnessed similar disorderly conduct in airport lounges, on airplanes, in hotels and in restaurants. The kids clearly know no better, having not been taught by their parents that these places are not playgrounds and that good behaviour is essential. What excuse do the parents have for failing to pass on these rules of common courtesy? I suspect they got away with similar misbehaviour themselves and, therefore, consider it perfectly normal when their kids run around screaming, shouting and generally making a nuisance of themselves. Thankfully, there are two little people who make up for the offensive majority. I have in mind an impeccably behaved brother and sister who have restored my faith in the children of Kuwait with their faultless manners, happy disposition and charming behaviour. If only all kids were as endearing. I’m sure they know who they are but just in case they don’t, I shall make a point of telling them; and I’ll congratulate their parents while I’m at it.

Katerina Shpitsa is a Russian actress of both theatre and cinema. With roles in over 30 films and TV shows, her undisputed talent promises a bright future. During her first visit to the Middle East, Katerina attended the Russian Film Week in Kuwait at the Abdulhusain Abdulredha Theatre in Salmiya. Thanks to the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the State of Kuwait, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and Kuwait’s National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, the people of Kuwait had the opportunity to enjoy Russian cinema, and culture, at its best. The opening ceremony was attended by H.E. Sheikh Salman Sabah Al-Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah, the Kuwait Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs and H.E. Vladmir Medinsky, Minister of Culture for Russia. Six popular, but very different, Russian movies were selected to be screened, with both English and Arabic subtitles. The moves were also enjoyed by a team of actors, directors and composers flown in from Russia to attend the event. The opening film was ‘The Iron Ivan’ in which Katerina has a leading role. In an exclusive interview, she tells us more about her acting career, her aspirations and her dream to play a super-hero.

Please introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Fatma Alqadeeri. I am a social media influencer and Marketing and PR specialist. To me, I feel I have two full time jobs - taking care of my two sons, and my work as a freelancer. In between, I work out, work out and work out! Tell us about your education. I hold a bachelor degree in mass communications, graduated from Kuwait University 2006. Media nowadays is much different than when I studied it back then! But of course I have the basic information, history and the main communication theories. So I have been keeping my mind updated by completing many courses in marketing, social media and public relations. Tell us about your career journey. The funny thing that everyone in college used to tell me was that I'm a ‘studyholic’ and ‘workaholic’ at the same time. I was always eager to get more information and study more about media. I was very curious about this world and how the power of words and pictures can change opinions and how it can change a nation’s ideology, principles and thoughts. So I started working with the university newspaper as a journalist, and at a local magazine at the same time. After I graduated, I worked in one of the leading banks in Kuwait as a relationship officer. At the age of 27, my dreams came true when I started a whole new department (customer service) from scratch at one of the leading automotive companies in the country and being the head of it. I ended up managing three departments at the same time. When I had my first baby, I resigned and started to focus on raising him instead. Since then I've been my own boss as a freelancer and have many deals with big companies and new businesses, Alhimdellah.

Tell us more about your children. I have two children, the eldest is Yaqoub but we always call him Goubi. It’s funny that some of my followers and fans keep call me ‘Om Goubi’. Five months ago I gave birth to Abdullwahab. We named him after our role model (my father). Yaqoub and Wahab are the whole world to me. How did you feel the first time you found out you would be a mom? To be honest it was a terrifying feeling to be responsible for a tiny human being; to carry him inside your tummy for 9 months, to change your lifestyle including what you eat because everything that you do or eat has an effect on him. I remembered that I cried out my fears and happiness at the same time. What is one thing you learned from your mom that helped you in your motherhood? My mother has a strong personality; no matter what, you will never see her weak or crying. So I learned that whatever I'm facing in my life, I can beat it, I can survive it and I can get over it. How do you manage your time? How do you balance being a working woman and a mother? To be honest, sometimes I can keep things under control and sometimes I can't. Being a mom means the children always come first. I'm still learning how to schedule my day and my life; as they are growing up it's becoming harder and harder. But Alhimdellah, I've never let my personal life affect my work. I remember that last October I went to a business meeting and signed a new deal, only a week after my delivery.

APRIL, 2016

Please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Katerina Shpitsa. I am an actress and I have been acting for almost thirteen years. Is this your first visit to Kuwait? Yes, in fact it’s my first time to this region. I haven’t had many vacations in my life so haven’t travelled very far. How did you like Kuwait? I really like it, although the visit is only for a very short time. I think I need another visit to this country. So far, which is your favourite place in Kuwait? I have only visited the Kuwait Towers which was a great experience. Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to see the malls. I would’ve liked to visit The Avenues. How did it all begin? When I was 13, I joined a theatre-studio and in less than a year I started playing main and leading roles in theatre.

PHOTOGRAPHER: Hamad Al-Ainati - @7mdphotography

Tell us about your journey to get into films? While I was doing theatre, I was also studying law at the Perm State University. In the summer of 2005, I was on vacation in Moscow and had to stay for four unexpected days as I had no ticket for the train. I was staying at a good friend's apartment who was a scout photographer and he suggested that I try casting for his company. I went along just to accompany him (although as I am not very tall, I didn't expect to be a model). Coincidentally, when I went for the casting, there was a job of a dancer with no conditions of height for the role. The director asked a question in the hall saying "Who is a professional dancer here?" and I lied and said “I am”. I was not a professional dancer but I was very good as I had a class for choreography in my school and back in Perm; and I used to earn money dancing for a while. That's how I got my first job in Moscow. I worked for four days and earned 200 US Dollars. For me it was like a flight to the moon! Later, the agency asked me to sign a contract with them but I refused and came back to Perm. Later, I took some exams at the university and they permitted me to study by distance. So I went back to Moscow and for almost six months earned money dancing. After that I got a job in the production house as a choreographer and also an English teacher for the children and I also tried to dance and sing there and produced a demo. One day the first director I worked for saw the demo and asked his daughter, who was the manager, to contact me. When we met he gave me a script and held an audition. This was in June of 2005 and I passed the audition and got the spot. That's how I did my first TV series called ‘Adam and Eve's transformation’. I played the role of Eve. It's the story of a girl who wears boy's clothing so she can hang around with the boys. She meets a boy and falls in love. It was directed by the legendary Russian director Georgi Yungvald-Khilkevich who also directed the famous movie ‘Musketeers Twenty Years After’. Sadly, he passed away this year. We were good friends for a long time. We didn't see each other often because he worked up until his last day. He taught me to believe in myself and gave me self-confidence. He gave me lots of advice which helps me to think in the correct way. Approximately how many movies have you done so far? Around 35 TV serials and movies. What is your latest film? The latest one will be out at the end of April called ‘Flight Crew’ directed by Nikolai Lebedev. CITYPAGESKUWAIT.COM

How was your experience working in the movie ‘Poddubny’ which you brought to Kuwait (‘The Iron Ivan’ as they call it in English)? It is a great movie and I had a lovely experience. It was filmed in 2012 and released in 2014. When I first went for the audition for this movie, my son was only 3 weeks old. When we started filming he was 1 month and the major shooting took place when he was just 4 months old. As I was breastfeeding him, we were constantly together so that any time he needed me, I would take a break and nurse him. It was not easy. Did your role in this film require any special preparation? Yes, my doctor advised that I could start practicing after my delivery so I went to the circus set and started training with a professional for almost one month. I couldn't do much because it was just after my delivery. There are several parts in the movie that I did by myself and I was lucky to also have a perfect stunt-double who is a great artist of the circus in Moscow. We are really very similar in body and face. In fact, we had a very nice photo where both of us are standing together in the same pose. It's such a pity that I lost the photo and didn't even save it on my computer. But I remember the shot in my mind and that's the best place to store it. Towards the end of the movie, your character ‘Masha’ dies. What's your opinion of this? Well, answered as a script writer, the death of Masha's character was a big event in Ivan's life. We couldn't change it. Nevertheless my fans would like to see more of me in the movie. Historically, in the real story of ‘Poddubny’ there is no real love between Ivan and Masha but they are very close friends. The love is only in the movie.

What is the most challenging about being a mother? How do you stay motivated during challenging times? The most challenging thing is always running out of time, and of course, the lack of sleep. It’s a challenge when the next day comes and I have to perform with full power. Every mother chastises herself every night that she could do better! Sometimes I can’t even remember when I last had a manicure or had a massage! What motivates me the most during challenging times is when my children smile or laugh; I picture in my mind when they grow up to be the best of the best. How does it feel watching your children grow up? No words can explain how it feels. What do you to relax? Recently, I somehow manage one hour for myself every day to go to the gym to work out. What relaxes me the most is boxing!

What is your favourite movie or role so far? I like ‘Iron Ivan’ very much. I also like the movie ‘Friday’ in which I play the role of a young mom who wants to go to the night club. Unfortunately, the nanny of the child lets her down at the last minute but because she wants to go so desperately, she still decides to go but takes a radio nanny. I also liked my role in the TV series ‘The Young Guard’ last spring. It's based on a novel.

What has been your proudest moment so far? I know that everybody who reads this will laugh, but my proudest moment was when Yaqoub graduated from nursery. I literally pictured him in my mind graduating from Harvard!

What would be your dream role? I haven't played the role of a female super hero yet. It would be an interesting experience for me as I have always played the role of a little girl, mom, prostitute, generous woman, serious girl etc. I think I would like to experiment playing someone like Mata Hari.

What is your biggest fear? I put my fears in a box and buried it in my back yard! I always keep three things in my mind dream big, fear nothing, and achieve more.

Would you like to do movies outside Russia? Of course, no-one could say NO to that! I am waiting for the call of destiny. Now, let’s ask a few personal questions: When is your birthday? 29th October. Your favourite food? Potatoes - boiled potatoes, fried potatoes and baked potatoes! I also like greens. I don't like meat very much but I love all seafood. I also have a love for desserts and my favourites are Tiramisu and Panacota. Your favourite cuisine? Italian, Japanese and some traditional French dishes. What is your favourite country? It's very difficult to choose as each country is unique in its own way and I love to visit new countries and learn about their cultures. What are some of your hobbies? Cooking, reading and all types of sports.

Finally, your message for us at CityPages: I feel privileged to have seen the magazine; to have touched it and felt it. I think it’s an excellent publication of great quality. My message to everyone at CityPages is "Never Stop” and “Meet as many different people as possible". Thank you so much for interviewing me.

82

What is your biggest strength? My husband's support.

APRIL, 2016

What is your favourite quote? What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Name one item in life you can’t do without? Without a second thought, my phone. If my life is a studio then my phone is the control room. In your opinion, what are the three keys to success? 1-Discover your ‘1’ thing. 2-Align your ‘being’ and ‘doing’. 3-Figure out what you don't want - this will keep you away from failure. What is next for you? What would you still like to achieve? The sky is my limit. I always urge myself to keep upgrading my goals in life and career. The dream remaining is to start my own company in Marketing and Public Relations.

What would you say to first time mothers? To get educated in how to raise your children. Do not depend only on what you learned from your mother and grandmothers. Enjoy every moment of this journey. What advice would you give to young women starting out in their career? Push your limits and invest your time for your future. The time that you have now without any responsibility, will get less and less with time.

APRIL Book Releases Life Without a Recipe

Delivering the Truth

Diana Abu-Jaber

Edith Maxwell

On one side, there is Grace: prize-winning author Diana Abu-Jaber’s tough, independent sugar-fiend of a German grandmother, wielding a suitcase full of holiday cookies. On the other, Bud: a flamboyant, spice-obsessed Arab father, full of passionate argument. The two could not agree on anything: not about food, work, or especially about what Diana should do with her life. Grace warned her away from children. Bud wanted her married above all-even if he had to provide the ring. Caught between cultures and lavished with contradictory “advice” from both sides of her family, Diana spent years learning how to ignore others’ well-intentioned prescriptions.

Quaker midwife Rose Carroll hears secrets and keeps con fidences as she attends births of the rich and poor alike in an 1888 Massachusetts mill town. When the town’s world-famed carriage industry is threatened by the work of an arsonist, and a carriage factory owner’s adult son is stabbed to death with Rose's own knitting needle, she is drawn into solving the mys tery. Things get dicey after the same owner’s mistress is also murdered, leaving her one-week-old baby without a mother. The Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier helps Rose by lending words of advice and support. While strug gling with being less than the perfect friend, Rose draws on her strengths as a counselor and problem solver to bring two mur derers to justice before they destroy the town’s carriage industry and the people who run it.

The Last Painting of Sara de Vos

The Genius of Birds

Dominic Smith

Jennifer Ackerman

This is what we long for: the profound pleasure of being swept into vivid new worlds, worlds peopled by characters so intriguing and real that we can't shake them, even long after the reading's done. In his earlier, award-winning novels, Dominic Smith demonstrated a gift for coaxing the past to life. Now, in The Last Painting of Sara de Vos, he deftly bridges the historical and the contemporary, tracking a collision course between a rare landscape by a female Dutch painter of the golden age, an inheritor of the work in 1950s Manhattan, and a celebrated art historian who painted a forgery of it in her youth.

Birds are astonishingly intelligent creatures. In fact, according to revolutionary new research, some birds rival primates and even humans in their remarkable forms of intelligence. Like humans, many birds have enormous brains relative to their size. Although small, bird brains are packed with neurons that allow them to punch well above their weight.

The Long Shadow of Small Ghosts: Murder and Memory in an American City

Laura Tillman

A harrowing, profoundly personal investigation of the causes, effects, and communal toll of a deeply troubling crime-the brutal murder of three young children by their parents in the border city of Brownsville, Texas. On March 11, 2003, in Brownsville, Texas-one of America’s poorest cities-John Allen Rubio and Angela Camacho murdered their three young children. The apartment building in which the brutal crimes took place was already rundown, and in their aftermath a consensus developed in the community that it should be destroyed. It was a place, neighbors felt, that was plagued by spiritual cancer.

She resolved then to tell her children about her own rape so they could learn and protect themselves, and she began to realize that the man who assaulted her was one of the formative people in her life.

BOOK CLUB Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus

T

hose of you who know me, know that I don’t usually like to read help books, relationship books and so on. I’ve always believed that, well, if you need to learn about successes, failures or relationships, you have to go through it yourself. Men are from Mars Women are from Venus (1993) was no different for me. It is one of the most famous relationship books, if not the most famous one and I was reluctant to read it until I recently met the author himself, Dr John Gray. After a three hour lecture in Kuwait about the book, his experiences and how he came to write the book, I was sold. There were so many 'Oh Wow' moments with the audience that after the lecture had finished, I went to purchase the book. Not surprisingly, all of the English copies at the venue were sold and this was also the case in other bookshops around the country. Not to be defeated, I ordered it online. Let me tell you a bit about the man himself. Dr John Gray is an American counselor, author and lecturer, born in 1951 in Houston, Texas. He has a bachelor

degree as well as a master degree in Science of Creative Intelligence. Also, he received an honorary doctorate from Governors State University in Illinois. He has written other well known titles such as: What You Feel You Can Heal (1993), Mars and Venus in Love (1994), Women are from Heaven (2000) and many more. This book is not a ‘normal’ book, it is years and years of the author's experiences and research. Gray doesn't just talk about men and women relationships, he talks about the scientific differences between men and women that make unions somewhat difficult. Once that is understood, things start to make sense in one's own relationship. This book has sold more than fifteen million copies worldwide and has been translated to many different languages around the world. It is a guide to better, healthy relationships and the secret to a successful relationship.

New Apple SE iPhone Someone is missing the smaller iPhone apparently. iPhone SE is the latest Apple iPhone product. It comes with a design similar to the iPhone 5s but with the hardware of the iPhone 6s. The 4inch iPhone is equipped with the latest A9 chipset (with its M9 motion-tracking processor) and 2GB of RAM. It has twice faster CPU than the iPhone 5s and triple the GPU performance. The iPhone SE has the exact same screen as the one in the iPhone 5s. That means it still runs at a resolution of 1136 x 640, which also means the math still works out to a pixel density of 326ppi (the same as the iPhone 6s). It comes with the latest iOS 9.3 and with a 12MP camera that supports shooting 4K videos. The iPhone SE is a lovely smartphone for iOS newcomers and small-handed users alike. It’s also really great for people that don`t like smartphones and you want to introduce it to them.

Sony's Prototype Projector Turns any Table into a Touch-Sensitive Display. Well, well, well. Sony’s prototype projector aims to turn any tabletop into a touch-sensitive display. The ‘Interactive Tabletop’ concept uses depth sensors and motion tracking to know when objects are placed on the table and even brings storybooks to life. Sony programmed its prototype to recognize a copy of the Lewis Carroll classic Alice in Wonderland. When the company's representative opens the book, it springs to life with animations that can be dragged off the page and then used to interact with nearby physical objects, like a teacup or deck of playing cards.

April Thoughts Either it’s in the apparel industry or just in the weather, but we can’t deny the heat is here to stay. Which means there are probably going to be a lot of happy celebrations where looks will be the main eye candy. In the hope that you are one of the lucky ones attending such an event, a wedding for example, we’ll be introducing you to a bunch of red carpet gowns so you have an idea of what to wear this spring at your fancy feasts. Let’s match these gowns to your personality so you can create your own personal style.

Go with the flow This spring, the best dressed celebrities had one thing in common: flowy full length gowns. Long dresses screamed glamour and elegance while being the main attraction at The Oscars, Golden Globe Awards and Brit Awards. Charming long train dresses like the Elizabeth Kennedy gown worn by Mindy Kaling, had everyone talking for sure.
