DAY 1

LISBOA/ÓBIDOS/ALCOBAÇA/NAZARÉ/BATALHA/FÁTIMA (+/-217KM /134.8 MILES) Through a landscape rich in windmills and fruit trees, we arrive in Óbidos (stop), surrounded by medieval walls where we can admire the harmony of the architecture, the diversity of the handicrafts and taste the famous ginjinha (bitter cherry liqueur). Visit Alcobaça (stop) with the first and largest gothic church in Portugal with the tombs of the doomed lovers Pedro and Inês de Castro. Stopping in Nazaré (stop), a typical fishing village and seaside resort immersed in tradition and legend. We continue to Batalha (stop) - visit the Monastery of Santa Maria de Victoria, a masterpiece of the gothic in Portugal where we also encounter the tomb of Henry the Navigator, the mastermind behind Portugal’s era of maritime discoveries. FÁTIMA/COIMBRA/AVEIRO/OPORTO (+/-270KM/152.9 MILES) Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Coimbra (stop) - visit to the University, one of the oldest in the world, with its magnificent baroque library and its unique atmosphere characterised by ancient traditions and customs such as the black student capes and the melancholic fado music. Stop at St Clara Church, where lies the tomb of Queen St. Isabel, the protagonist of the “miracle of the roses”. In the city centre, there is a chance to admire Coimbra’s exclusive ceramics. In the afternoon, we continue to Aveiro (stop), a city of canals and known as the “Portuguese Venice”, where you shall have time to see the graceful “moliceiro” vessels and taste the local sweet delicacy “ovos moles. Porto the 2nd city of Portugal and world heritage by UNESCO - a living amphitheatre inviting us to make a morning visit to discover the riverside area, old houses, palaces, churches that history has made eternal and Port wine, known worldwide. We continue to the Minho, the northwest region of Portugal that offers natural green sceneries and the sparkling “green wine”. Starting by Guimarães - the cradle of the nation, birthplace of the first king of Portugal, where, walking along the historic centre, for moments one is plunged back into medieval times. Visit the Sacred Hill, crowned by the Castle, as well the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, which original building dates back to the 15th centuries. Drive to Braga known as the “Portuguese Rome” for its concentration of religious architecture, as the oldest Cathedral of the country, and the “Bom Jesus do Monte” Sanctuary with famous baroque stairway and gardens. Departure for Amarante (stop), a pretty town proud of its Saint Goncalo, renowned for promoting love and marriage and where the river facing monastery houses his tomb and with a lively, bustling market where you can find fruit, vegetables, chickens, fabrics and an immense variety of other popular items. Afterwards, we drive onto Vila Real (stop) - visiting the gardens of the Mateus estate, whose façade is still depicted on the well- known Portuguese rosé wine bottles. Drive through the heart of Portugal to Bussaco, well known for its luxuriant forest, made up of a selection of rare trees and plants of exotic beauty, and hosting a charming and romantic hotel, formerly a royal hunting lodge. We continue to Tomar, a city whose development is closely interlinked with the Order of the Templars, which received these lands in 1159 as a reward for the assistance given Dom Afonso Henriques (the first King of Portugal) in the Christian reconquest of the country. It was Dom Gualdim Pais, the first Grand Master of the Order in Portugal who founded the castle and the remarkable Convent of Christ within. LISBON/ÉVORA (+/-140KM / 87 MILES) One day spent discovering the town of Évora, a mosaic of culture, history and traditions. Leaving Lisbon, we cross the bridge over the river Tagus and head through a beautiful and bucolic landscape of olive trees, cork oak trees and vineyards before arriving at Évora – UNESCO World Heritage. In the narrow streets of this whitewashed town we walk back through time visiting some of Évora’s most important monuments: the Roman Temple, the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, Saint Francis Church with its “Chapel of Bones” and the University. At the market, we see and feel the richness of the products applied in preparing one of the most elaborate and best appreciated gastronomies of Portugal. Throughout the visit, we also get to admire the diversity and authenticity of local handicrafts with cork, ceramic and copper objects. Time for lunch. Part of the morning provides further leisure time in Ă&#x2030;vora before then driving southward passing Beja (stop) where the highest tower in any Portuguese medieval castles dominates the town and the region. Crossing the low mountain range, we enter the Algarve. At the end of the morning, there is free time to wander the streets of Sintra (a UNESCO classified Cultural Landscape) that enchanted kings and inspired poets and to appreciate some of the handicraft shops and tea-rooms serving up delicious local sweets, including “queijadas” and “travesseiros”. We leave for Colares*, a demarcated region recognized for its quality table wines, continuing onwards until Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point on continental Europe, passing the beach of Guincho until Boca do Inferno and always enjoying the sea framed landscapes until Cascais and a brief visit to this coastal town. LISBON/ÓBIDOS/ALCOBAÇA/NAZARÉ/BATALHA/FÁTIMA/LISBON (+/- 332 KM / 206 MILES) Leaving Lisbon, we first head north with our first stop in Óbidos, a small town surrounded by medieval walls, with its traditional whitewashed houses and wrought iron balconies, its handcrafts and the famous Pousada do Castelo. Then we head on to Alcobaça to visit the Monastery Church (UNESCO World Heritage), both the longest and the first church built entirely in the gothic style in Portugal, where lie the tombs of D. Pedro and D. Inês de Castro. Our lunch is served in Nazaré, the most typical and colourful of Portuguese fishing villages. Whenever possible, we continue onto Sítio with its beautiful views over the beach and the ocean beyond. In the afternoon, we visit the wonderful Batalha Monastery Church (UNESCO World Heritage), a masterpiece in the gothic style, with particularly beautiful stained-glass windows. Then, we arrive at the Sanctuary of our Lady of Fátima, a centre of the Christian faith and world pilgrimage. To visit: the Basilica, housing the tombs of Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta, and the Apparition Chapel at the heart of the shrine. When possible, there is time to attend mass. DAY 1

LISBOA / ALMOUROL / TOMAR (+/- 164 KM / 101.9 MILES) Leaving Lisbon, we set off for one of the most representative monuments of the Knights Templar in Portugal: Almourol Castle. Located on a small island in the river Tagus, this is one of the Europeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most emblematic monuments. We then proceed onwards in the direction of the Castle and Convent of Tomar - the Orderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own headquarters. This is undoubtedly one of the finest architectonic works existing in Portugal. Here, we encounter the Castle with its imposing bulwark, the Charola - considered the best preserved Templar church w ith a centralised layout -, the enigmatic Manueline window and the main cloister, a masterpiece of the European Renaissance. We then gain the opportunity to visit the Church of St. John the Baptist, the matrix churc h of Tomar, with its original structure subject to renovation on the orders of King Manuel, a former governor of the Order. This thus proves a monument very much in the Manueline style. We then move onto the Church of Santa Maria dos Olivais. This fine example of Gothic architecture served both as the pantheon for the grand masters of the Order and a template for c hurches built throughout the Portuguese empire.

DAY 2

TOMAR / DORNES / BATALHA / ALC OBA Ă&#x2021; A / SINTRA (+/- 251 KM / 155.9 MILES) We first set off for the pretty setting of Dornes, located alongside the river Tagus. Here, we tour the Templar Tower, also known as the Tower of Dornes. We then follow this w ith a visit to CIBA the Battle of Aljubarrota Interpretation Centre. This provides the opportunity to the most important battles of Medieval Europe and decisive to Portuguese unity and identity. Lopo Dias de Sousa, a canonical religious master in the Order of Christ, proved a defining and fundamental figure in this period of history. We then advance to the Monastery of AlcobaĂ§a with its church containing one of the largest Cistercian abbeys in Europe. This architectural masterpiece was built on the orders of Afonso Henriques, the founding king of Portugal, and encharged to Saint Bernardo de Claraval, principal abbot in the Cistercian order and a great mentor and driver in the Order of the Knights Templar. We then depart in the direction of Sintra.

SINTRA / LISBOA We begin the day with a visit to Quinta da Regaleira, a leading example of the Romantic architectural style and one of the most esoteric and mysterious places in Portugal. We reveal a few of the secrets of these enchanting surroundings replete with neo-Templar symbols such as the initiation well. We then take in the Tower of BelĂŠm, the Portuguese monument that symbolises the era of the Discoveries and the National Navy Museum. We here gain the chance to see into, with the help of two of the governors of the Order of Christ, Prince Henry the Navigator and King Manuel, what was certainly the most splendid period in the history of Portugal that, as the Poet himself affirmed , gave new worlds to the World .
