Pickaway County is a story about careful cultivation. A story of growth with intention And a close eye on the right fit for our space. A place with enough resources to be choosy And the curiosity to experiment. There are generations here, Each learning from the other, And work is play is life. We are at once history and future, Enduring and upstart, Near the city but not of the city. In Pickaway County, we go forward together, Whether it’s people, business, or the country around us. It’s an open invitation for a day or forever. The only place to find that restaurant. Those gatherings. That farm. Pickaway County is a way of life. A place of life. A place for new roots to last for years to come.

Welcome! Everyone grows here!

Situated at the crossroads of U.S. Highways 22 and 23, the Pickaway County Welcome Center greets visitors, businesses, tourists, and neighbors alike. In addition to our knowledgeable and helpful staff, the center offers information about the community, the county, the region, and the state of Ohio. Located near the entrance to Historic Downtown Circleville, the center provides maps and brochures for area attractions, unique gift items, and a rotating display of regional highlights. Pickaway has its origins in the native word, “Piqua” meaning “risen from ashes.” Pickaway County, founded in 1810, has deep roots in Native American history and many protected Indian burial mounds can be explored throughout the area. Today, the county has more than 58,000 residents, with a median age of 39.7. While we host many unique attractions, guests will surely notice that Agriculture plays a significant part in our community, with nearly 300,000 acres of farmland within county lines. With a median annual income of $63,633, higher than the U.S. median annual income, there are 1.47 times more people working in the agriculture industry than would be expected in a location of this size. Other industries represented within the county are healthcare and social assistance, retail trade, and manufacturing. Several national and international companies call Pickaway County home and help to employ and develop our growing workforce. As with many communities, small businesses are the lifeblood of the local economy and that is no different in Pickaway County. Entrepreneurship is about taking risks and many of our residents have done just that, even in the most challenging times, displaying the perseverance and resilience of our community. Where education is concerned, Pickaway County provides outstanding opportunities for residents to diversify their skill sets and share a sense of community in doing so. Pickaway County is home to Ohio Christian University, four area school districts (Circleville, Logan Elm, Teays Valley and Westfall) and the Pickaway County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Wittich’s Candy Shop & Soda Fountain

No visit to Pickaway County is complete without a tasty treat from the country’s oldest confectionery, Wittich’s Candy Shop. As we move forward in 2021, we at the Pickaway County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau are excited to see what it brings. With lessons learned and partnerships developed in 2020, we are better equipped than ever to execute our respective missions. Despite the challenges of the past year, Pickaway County has once again proven itself a resilient and popular place to live, work and play. We are proud to share the positive growth and welcoming culture that attracts investment in our community and visitors from all walks of life. Whether you’re seeking a destination with a rich historical heritage, unique family attractions or an eye toward the future, you’ve come to the right place!

A Pickaway History

Lord Dunmore

Pickaway County is located in the Virginia Military Grant of 1784, west of the Scioto River and The Congress Lands of 1785, and east of the Scioto River. The first permanent settlers arrived in late 1796 or early 1797 and erected cabins along an old Indian trail that ran between Lancaster and Chillicothe. One of the first permanent settlements was Newellstown, now known as Tarlton, which was established in 1801 along the Indian trail, or Zane’s Trace. Pickaway County was created by an act of Ohio Legislature in 1810 from three surrounding counties, and Circleville was designated the county seat in 1811. The recorded history of Pickaway County began in 1774 when Lord Dunmore led an army into the Ohio Valley in a war with Native Americans. Known as Lord Dunmore’s War, troops were camped east of Circleville at Camp Charlotte.

Chief Logan

As casualties mounted, a meeting was arranged to draw up a truce. The meeting took place on the Pickaway Plains under a gargantuan elm tree. This particular elm tree became known as the Logan Elm. During the meeting, the famous speech of Chief Logan was delivered. Logan’s speech has been translated into virtually every language and is widely known as one of the most eloquent speeches ever delivered. Ancient inhabitants graced this area several thousand years before the Native Americans. The evidence of their existence is found in the form of prehistoric burial mounds. A remarkable specimen of the ancient mounds, Greek Cross, can be found near the small village of Tarlton.

The Villages of Pickaway Eight incorporated villages are found in Pickaway County: Ashville, Commercial Point, Darbyville, New Holland, Orient, South Bloomfield, Tarlton and Williamsport. The city of Circleville is the county seat.

1ASHVILLE

4DARBYVILLE

Nine miles from Columbus, Ashville was formed in 1810 and named for the band of Shawnee Indians, known as the Pekowi, who inhabited the area. It is home to the Ohio Small Town Museum, which houses America’s oldest working traffic light. It also hosts a large July 4th celebration in its spacious community park.

The Shawnee Indians had several villages and a large burial ground in the vicinity of Darby. Darby Creek, which flows along the village, is a national and state scenic river. Both the creek and the community were named for the Shawnee Indian Chief Darby.

2CIRCLEVILLE When Pickaway County was formed in 1810, Circleville was laid out to conform to prehistoric circular earthworks with streets radiating from an octagonal courthouse in the center. 1838, an effort began to “Square the Circle,” and over the next 20 years all traces of the ancient earthworks disappeared. Serving as the county seat,Circleville is now home to Ohio Christian University and the newly renovated Pickaway Agriculture and Event Center. Each year the city hosts the Circleville Pumpkin Show, which brings nearly 500,000 people to the area.

Deer Creek State Park is located near New Holland, situated on the Pickaway-Fayette County line. Golfers can enjoy Deer Creek State Park Golf Course and its carefullymanicured greens that bring out the best in any golfer’s game. The lies are mostly level, but several extra-long holes on this par 72 championship course invite golfers to test their skills and savor the game. The ODNR Division of Ohio State Parks also operates and maintains a lodge, marina, parking lots, boat ramps, boat docks, campgrounds, a swimming beach, picnic areas, horseback riding, biking and hiking trails. The Division of Wildlife operates and maintains a shooting range, an archery range and a public hunting area primarily on the west and north side of the lake.

With no real budget, the museum has sustained itself for more than 30 years. Named one of the Top 25 Museums by New Roadside American, it is a mixture of the commonplace and the usual, attracting visitors from the United States and around the world. Displays include one that features silver nuggets unearthed at the Snake Den Mounds, and another that spotlights Buster, “the Dog Who Voted Republican.” A stuffed rooster now on display, while alive, would take a dime in his beak and strut to a story to pay for his own corn!

Education

Preparing for the Future Residents of Pickaway County place a high value on education. Home to several school districts, vocational schools and one university, the area offers many options for those who wish to pursue and continue their education. Circleville City Schools rest on a campus that houses the elementary school, middle school and high school. There are more than 2,000 students in grades Pre-K-12. The schools are divided into three districts: Logan Elm District services the eastern and southern county areas, Teays Valley District serves the northern section, and Westfall District that serves the western portion of the county. A number of preschools and private schools are scattered throughout the county, including New Hope Christian Academy, that provides K-12 education. Additionally, two vocational schools, Pickaway-Ross Joint Vocational and Eastland Joint Vocational School, serve students as they get ready for the workforce.

Ohio University has regional campuses in Chillicothe and Lancaster.
