Summer Is Coming

lthough Ohio is known for its crazy weather pattern, I can say with a degree of certainty that summer will arrive. When it does, the City is ready, with prepared plans for a full calendar of fun, entertaining events showcasing our award-winning parks and local treasures. I invite you to explore Grove City this summer and discover something or someplace new with your family and friends. Hop on your bicycles and hit the trails. Over 26 miles of paved pathways stretch to every corner of Grove City and connect historic Town Center with all neighborhoods and parks from Central Crossing High School to Fryer Park and Scioto Grove Metro Park. Have fun and set a family challenge to enjoy a picnic lunch at each of the City and neighborhood parks before the summer ends, there are 21 of them, so you had better get started. Begin your park tour with the Gardens at Gantz where you will find superbly manicured gardens, a meditative labyrinth, handicap-accessible trails and more – something for the entire family. For more family fun, take the crew to Fryer Park Thursday evenings during June and July to enjoy a free, family friendly movie under the stars or take in a baseball game under the lights at Windsor Park. Windsor Park flourishes with activity in the summer, beginning May 3 with the Friday Night Grand Slam and Grove City Wall of Fame induction ceremony, celebrating the start of the Little League® and Buddy Ball baseball seasons. From that moment on, the diamonds are filled with the joy of baseball for players of all ages and abilities. Opportunities abound for catching up with old friends or making new ones at any of our wonderful summer events. Friday evening Summer Sizzle concerts at George Edge Music Park on Broadway kick off May 24 with a performance by the Grove City Community Winds, conducted by James Swearingen. New this year

during the concert is our very first Touch-a-Truck event, hosted by the Service Department. June 14-16 is a busy weekend in Town Center as the Heart of Grove City’s Wine and Arts Festival coincides with the Ohio Flags of Honor annual display and patriotic concert. July is also eventful beginning with our Independence Day Celebration and impressive firework display. The last weekend of the month brings droves of GCHS alumni to town as the Annual Homecoming Celebration is held in Town Center, centered on the Annual Grove City High School Alumni Softball Tournament — touted as the world’s largest alumni softball tournament. August keeps things going with National Night Out to kick off the month. Residents can take in all things green at the EcoFest, Aug. 10, and a few blocks over, the Heart of Grove City Bourbon Tasting closes out the day in Town Center. Remember to support your hometown and take your summer shopping to a new level by patronizing local vendors found throughout all of Grove City. Spice up your spree and ride your bike to Town Center then stroll the walkways during the Saturday morning Farmers’ Markets beginning May 18. Explore the unique wares of area merchants or enjoy an al fresco meal, tasty treat or soothing drink at one of Town Center’s dining establishments. Discovering Our Past Milligan Turkey Farm on Hoover Road More than 70 years ago a local farmer and his wife launched a poultry business eventually growing to become the largest turkey farm in the state for nearly 20 years. In 1948, George and Martha Milligan began their business with approximately 2,500 turkeys on their Hoover Road farm. Two years into their venture, the extreme Ohio weather threatened business. Nov. 1, 1950, recorded a record high temperature of 80 degrees, only to be followed three weeks later by freezing temperatures and blizzard conditions. The Great Appalachian Storm of 1950 descended quickly into the area and dropped more than 15 inches of snow in two days with winds creating drifts up to three feet or more. Mr. Milligan and several friends struggled throughout

the day to herd the fowl to shelter. In all, only 150 young turkeys were lost and the business did not suffer. Finding immediate success, the following years led to the Milligans quickly amassing an annual brooding of about 15,000 birds, adding a modest processing plant for dressing services and increasing the size of the farm to 170 acres by 1955. The Milligans were generous with their success and annually donated 20 to 30 turkeys to families in need. They also welcomed scouts,

4-H clubs and future farmers, providing tours and educational lectures. One of the barns on the property became a hangout for the Milligans’ two sons and many other area youth when one end was cleared and a basketball court was installed, followed by spectator stands and a “press balcony.” In the early 1970s, the court was home to the annual Cow Palace St. Valentine’s Day Basketball Classic for Grove City High School alumni, hosted by the Milligan family. In 1967, the Milligans closed the turkey farm and retired. The land is now home to Bethel Lutheran Church, Grove City High School and the appropriately named Martha’s Wood neighborhood of homes. The Milligan farm remains a cherished memory to many in the community.

Feeding the Need They say a rising tide lifts all boats, but our last economic recession left many in our community behind. Sometimes residents can use a little help. Grove City is home to three excellent assistance agencies: Mid-Ohio Foodbank, Grove City Food Pantry and MASH Pantry and Resource Center. Mid-Ohio Foodbank, 3960 Brookham Drive, distributes food across 20 counties to 680 agencies. Sourced through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, that’s approximately 66 million pounds of food or 140,000 meals to hungry families each day. With the help of regional grocery chains, food producers and local farmers, fresh produce accounts for approximately half of the total food provided. 2710 Columbus Street, is one of the agencies supported by Mid-Ohio Foodbank and generous donations of area residents. The pantry first served the community from a small room in the basement of Grove City United Methodist Church and moved to its current location on Columbus Street as the community need increased. Four directors now coordinate more than 60 volunteers, serving an average of 230 area families a month – nearly 12,200 individuals each year. Offering multiple resources of support for veterans, military families and survivors, the MASH Pantry and Resource Center, operating out of Victorious Living Church, 2735 Columbus Street, offers monthly produce markets, personal hygiene items and clothing when donations permit. The service is run entirely

through volunteer efforts and community donations, with no government funding. Development Tasteful Additions for Town Center

“T

asteful” growth has occurred in historic Town Center over the last several years including expanded dining options for residents and visitors – four opened within the last year. The newer dining establishments in Town Center include Transcend Coffee + Roastery, Garden Bar Café, Zassy’s Tap Room & Home Décor and Local Cantina. Each of these brings a wide variety of affordable dining options and its own unique vibe. Local Cantina is the most recent eatery welcomed to Town Center. Open since December, the restaurant greets a steady flow of patrons enjoying its unique atmosphere and delicious menu items showcasing a twist on the classic Tex-Mex flair. Taking great care to maintain the integrity of the traditional building it occupies, Local Cantina is embracing the architecture while blending modern amenities. The large windows facing Broadway and Mill Street offer a fun view of Grove City and overlook the future outdoor dining area, slated to open as warmer days approach. All the new dining options in Town Center are valued additions to the neighbors that are treasured mainstays of our hometown. Though many restaurants have come and gone, passed through multiple owners’ hands or changed names, none have been in business at the same location longer than Zamarelli’s Pizza Palace. Whether it’s Friday nights after the game or a Little League baseball party, locals loyal to their favorite hand-tossed pie from “Zam’s” and have been picking up dinner from the same small, white concrete block building on Front Street in Town Center since 1963. From the entertaining atmosphere of Plank’s on Broadway to the tasty treats at Capital City Cakes, Town Center is a charming, walkable area with plenty of affordable dining options, sure to satisfy even the most sophisticated foodie. Whether you’re seeking a traditional meal from Lilly’s Kitchen Table or meeting up with friends at Grove City Brewing Co. or Plum Run Winery, the historic streets of Grove City’s Town Center have exactly what you’re craving.

For local Grove City resident Justin Walls, all of his memories date back to his father’s diesel shop. Watching his dad work, Walls became increasingly curious about the motors he worked on and started helping him out in any way possible.

In the Beginning

Walls says that at 10 years old he and his brother got their first go-karts. “Soon I wanted a lot of bikes. But we were never handed anything; we had to work hard for what we wanted,” Walls says. “I helped my dad move his shop into a bigger building that summer, which was when everything escalated.” As a teenager, Walls started entering dirt bike races with his buddies. Racing came to a swift end, however, when he broke his leg during a race in high school. He then turned his attention to cars, purchasing a Chevrolet Nova with his own money when he turned 16. Cars didn’t satisfy his craving, though, and before he knew it, he was working on choppers and street bikes. This led him straight back to racing, searching for one more adrenaline rush. Walls says he was more careful the second time around, and it wasn’t long before he realized his true www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

passion was fixing up antique motorcycles. “Back in the 1920s, the guys who raced bikes really started everything,” Walls says. Around four years ago, and after a spike in TV shows featuring older bikes, Walls knew it was time to act if he wanted to make it on to the scene. He bought a pile of parts and started building his own antique bikes from scratch, not knowing the future this would provide.

Gaining Traction

Over the years, Walls has acquired more and more tools, making it possible to perfect the antique bikes. “I’m really OCD,” Walls laughs. “Everything has to be perfect for me to be satisfied.” Being able to apply modern manufacturing processes to his work, Walls has been able to improve bikes enough to get them back out on the road.

I have never asked for a lot of attention, so receiving worldwide recognition for what I’m doing in this industry has been unreal,” Walls says.

Walls’ biggest fan is his 11-yearold daughter, Kaelynn. Starting a business while becoming a father was one of Walls’ biggest challenges. “There have been a lot of ups and downs over the years, but finally landing in the antique world has been so good for me and my daughter,” says Walls. “With all of the crazy growth going on in Columbus for different industries, they could have recognized anyone. I am so grateful to represent my hometown and the developing science industry.”

Looking to the Future

The end goal for Walls is to eventually step away from the customer service aspect of his business and start building more projects. His vision includes hiring a fulltime staff, which will allow him to commit more time to multiple dream bikes. “I have all of these crazy ideas in my head, and to use my hands and tools to turn them into something I can get on and ride is what keeps me going,” Walls says. “There will always be antique motorcycles – more so in the future than now.” Mallory Grayson is a contributing writer. Crushing It Wine and Arts Festival continues growth with grape stomping, hands-on art and more By Garth Bishop

t the Grove City Wine and Arts Festival, attendees are not limited to just drinking wine and viewing art. Thirty-thousand patrons typically enjoy the experience of the festival’s two titular highlights, along with a host of other entertaining aspects. But festival organizers work each year to present interactive opportunities, and this year, those opportunities are growing significantly. “Each year, we try to work on more (opportunities) for the experiential part of it,” says Andrew Furr, Heart of Grove City executive director. The 2019 festival, taking place in historic Grove City Town Center, is set for June 14 and 15. Heart of Grove City has worked with local arts organizations to offer hands-on activities. This year, possible activities include painting with a local business, as well as glass work through Glass Axis; the organization that in the past has offered patrons the chance to sit down with a hot torch and make glass beads.

It’s not just the festival’s art component that will have handson activities – or, to coin a phrase, feet-on activities. Heart of Grove City has also been working with the Ohio Wine Producers Association to coordinate a grape-stomping activity, as well as other possible grape-related endeavors. Charting the festival’s growth is impressive. The first Wine and Arts

Festival, in 2012, had eight wineries and 14 artists. This year, the final tallies are expected to top 20 wineries and 70 artists. “Each year, it’s continued to grow, and we are reaching our maximum as far as our space allowances go,” says Furr. There are no plans to seek out other locations in the immediate future, he says. www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

Wine

The wine component of the festival hasn’t just grown in numbers; it’s also grown in variety. “The majority of the crowd that we were (seeing at first) was primarily a sweet wine crowd, but over the years, we’ve seen that change,”

says Furr. “We are seeing more of a crowd… that likes the dry wines.” Soine Vineyards, based in Powell, has a lot of dry wines, and has seen its stock rise at the festival in more recent years. Akron-based It’s Your Winery is a popular choice as well, Furr says, with people making

The 2019 artist line-up is not yet official – it’s typically announced in late April, with applications accepted through March 31 – but, as always, the festival’s jury is working to bring in a mix of artistic media. Some of the recent favorites have included a watercolor painter and a local wrought iron worker, and the selection committee always makes sure the roster includes local artists. “There are quite a few Grove City artists who make the cut,” says Furr. The Grove City Arts Council always buys two or three vendor spaces at the festival to showcase its members’ work. The last few years, the Arts Council has brought in a portrait artist for the amusement of festival patrons, and this year, it’s working with students from the Columbus College of Art & Design to rotate artists for more portrait opportunities. “(Patrons get) their kids’ portraits done, or they get portraits of themselves and their children,” Hunt says.

Brittany B Doherty had $5, the clothes on her back and a bike – and she had never felt happier.

rittany Doherty is a powerhouse woman who cannot be stopped. She grew up in Grove City and attended Central Crossing High School as an avid athlete with a competitive spirit. After graduating from the University of Akron, she sped off to New York City to work a busy, bustling corporate life. During her time there, however, life happened. Like a row of falling dominos, a series of unfortunate events sent Doherty’s idyllic lifestyle into chaos and forced her to re-evaluate how she was living and what it truly meant to be happy. She completed her yoga instructor license and spent her days teaching and dog-walking to make ends meet while still living in New York. Then, in a snap, she decided to take her passion for yoga and meditational spirit to live at an ashram – a community or place of religious or meditational retreat – in the Bahamas for three months. During her time there, she happened upon people from all walks of life. “I kept meeting people who were formerly incarcerated or had drug and alcohol addictions,” Doherty says. “And I kept thinking… of doing yoga in prisons, and trying to figure out how that would work.” As this unique idea came to surface, Doherty returned to the U.S. and began working to make something happen. The Breaking Cycles Project was created to support yoga and indoor cycling programs that worked within prison systems for rehabilitation. The project’s core belief is that everyone deserves second chances. For Doherty, the best way to get

this program across was catch the country’s attention – by biking across it totally alone. Before she tackled the crosscountry trip, she moved back to Grove City, where one of her biggest support systems resides. “My teachers, coaches, grandmother and grandfather were huge support systems growing up in Grove City,” Doherty says. “I have no idea where I’d be without them. My grandmother and grandfather are my No. 1 fans.” After trying once, turning back, and deciding to try again, her trip officially began in New York City and spanned all the way to Florence, Oregon, where she then cycled down into Mexico. She stayed wherever she could, often using an app called Warm Showers, a system of hosts around the country who welcome traveling bikers. “Everyone told me I was crazy,” Doherty laughs. “People thought it was impossible.” With very little preparation or endurance training, she began her trek and, as the days went on, felt more and more inspired by what she was doing. Her bike was equipped with minimal essentials

and was decorated with a Breaking Cycles sign to let everyone know the purpose of her ride. “All I have to do is make it to point B,” she told herself. “And that’s how I lived my life for those four months.” Doherty says the journey was the best thing she’s ever done. She

felt immensely motivated by how strong she found herself becoming, pushing past obstacles that came her way and overcoming all. With two pairs of shorts, shirts, sports bras, socks and $5 in her pocket, she found herself still to be amazingly happy. She recalls a certain point in her adventure when she ended up in Wyoming on Grand Teton, the highest mountain in Grand Teton National Park. It was there Doherty felt absolute peace and self-acceptance. “I was happier in that moment than when I was in New York when I had the apartment, the boyfriend, the job, the parties,” Doherty says. While the entire experience was life changing, that doesn’t mean biking 5,200 miles alone with just the clothes on your back is always peachy-keen. her water bottle began growing black mold, she didn’t panic and refused to be deterred. Some of the hardest spans of the trip were when she didn’t have human contact for long stretches of time, though she did end up meeting many people and creating relationships along the way. Through it all, she thrived during the journey. Not only did she raise awareness for the Breaking Cycles Project, but Doherty gained a new perspective on life. “We can overcome any obstacle or situation we’re in,” Doherty says. “We just have to believe in ourselves.” Doherty plans to continue her work with Breaking Cycles, consistently working to help people live positive, confident lives. Business, Baking or Both? Local student contemplates future with creative ideas By Lydia Freudenberg

epending on when you read this story, Grove City High School senior Jack Nance is either wrapping up senior year or feeling the pride as a recent graduate. Regardless, Nance is entering the next stage of his life and his future looks bright. With two career-driven passions, Nance has the opportunity to attend business school but is also considering culinary school. He even has a few entrepreneurial ideas, including a suit and tux rental shop that features funky patterns like tie-dye. With different talents and an array of interests, Nance may not be 100 percent sure on what to professionally pursue, but he has tons of options.

Two Passions are Better than One

During middle school, Nance realized cookie dough was never on the family grocery list. Then his sweet tooth had an idea – make the cookies from scratch. “I like doing something with my hands, like baking, because I’m not thinking about anything else. I’m

In sixth grade, Nance signed up for the school band with no particular instrument in mind. When he noticed no one was trying out for the euphonium, he decided to give it a whirl. For several years he rocked out on the brass instrument, until his teacher suggested the tuba as a better fit. Like the curious mind he is, Nance took the plunge. “The summer (before) junior year, I taught myself tuba,” Nance says. “And when auditions came around in the fall, I placed in the symphonic band, which is the top band.” His years in the band were memorable; from playing at Walt Disney World Resort and experiencing Universal Orlando Resort to hanging out with friends and marching at football games. “My friends have always had my back and we’ve always been able to laugh together,” Nance says. Nance may continue playing the tuba, but he’s currently focused on the big question: business or culinary school? 22 May/June 2019

just relaxing and listening to music or a podcast or something and just having fun,” Nance says. He’s also interested in business and already shows an impressive repertoire with the subject. During his junior and senior years, Nance participated in the local Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) chapter, an international organization that prepares students for business leadership and entrepreneurial roles. Because Nance prefers working solo, he competed in the personal financial literacy category – a role-play scenario that incorporates financial planning. “(DECA) is a place where I can learn some reallife application skills with finances or management or hospitality,” Nance says. “The age-old question is, ‘Why are we learning this in math?’ I understand that it can help, but (DECA) is something I can take out of high school right away.” www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

During his senior year, Nance placed second in districts and within the top 10 at the state finals for DECA. It’s not just a hobby – Nance may major in business, especially since he was accepted into Bowling Green State University’s College of Business. With two strong skill sets, Nance has also considered combining his interests by possibly opening a bakery or restaurant, or helping independent restaurants succeed through financial planning and business education. No matter what he pursues, Nance knows his parents are on his side. “They tell me all the time, ‘We’re on your side. Grove City Parks and Recreation offers six easy methods to register for classes. Registration forms are available for download online at GroveCityOhio.gov or pick up at the Kingston Center or the Evans Center. ONLINE registration is available at GroveCityOhio.gov for most Parks and Recreation offerings (sports excluded), providing 24-hour access to our exciting array of options for all ages.

WALK-IN registration is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Kingston Center, 3226 Kingston Ave., for preschool, youth and adult classes, and at the Evans Center, 4330 Dudley Ave., for 55+ offerings.

The Big Splash is a popular place for the community to spend hot summer days, whether a season pass holder or just visiting for the day. But it is possible to be too popular. In response to overcrowding issues in 2012, City Administration increased the focus on Grove City citizens by limiting day pass sales to members of the Grove City community and their guests. 10-year Visit Total: 377,211

Two Decades of Fun in the Sun

Since opening in July 1999, The Big Splash continues to improve the visitor experience by adding new and removing ineffective features big and small, up front and behind the scenes, always with fun and safety in mind. Highlights of the past 10 years include: • New seating and shade structures • Stage and shelter house replacing the seldom-used sand areas • Technology upgrades to speed up the admission process • New signage and clocks • Water filtration systems and chemical sensors • Addition of exterior LED lighting • Higher lifeguard stands for better sight lines • A zero-waste initiative as part of a SWACO partnership • Installation of aquatic climbing walls and water-play structures • Patron engagement amenities such as Theme Thursday guests and activities, Pass Holder Appreciation Days, parties and the custom “Splash Radio” broadcasts

Swim Lessons

Learning to swim leads to more than just fun and exercise - it can save a life. The Big Splash is committed to teaching the children of Grove City to build swimming proficiencies as they advance in skill level. 10-year Swim Lesson Total: 2,597

Responding to Changing Trends

When The Big Splash opened, it featured a sand play area and volleyball court. The areas became less popular and sand accumulated in the water and filters. In 2013, the sand areas were replaced with a shelter, a presentation stage and grassy area - all popular with our current visitors!

Safety is the main objective of The Big Splash where we consistently are recognized with high marks from Jeff Ellis and Associates (EA), the international company the City contracts with to provide safety training. The International Platinum Award for Excellence is EA’s highest honor; gold is second. In the past 10 years, The Big Splash earned a rating of Platinum or Gold every year.
