News and Information from the City of Grove City

E

Together, We Have it All

ach year Grove City welcomes the holidays with a wonderful lighted parade, tree-lighting celebration and Nutcracker-themed Christmas decorations throughout Town Center. This community excitement and approaching holiday season provides a perfect opportunity to reflect on what makes our hometown so great – our people. Ours is a community that believes in helping others. We hear of good deeds following tragedy, such as when our high schools’ sports teams helped with clean-up efforts after flooding and when local charity organizations collected and delivered clothing and basic necessities for Dayton following destructive tornadoes in May. It is common to hear of others going above and beyond with happy endings. Such was the case when Grove City’s Officer Davidson provided assistance, transporting three seniors to safety from their disabled vehicle on I-71; and when Detective Ryan, Officer Petty and Jackson Township Fire Department members saved the life of a three-year-old girl who nearly drowned in a swimming pool. Citizens step up every day. In April, four people worked together to subdue a man who attacked a patron. Anthony Price and Corey Washington stopped the knife assault and Shaela Davis and Melissa Jones provided first aid to the victim until help arrived. In a separate incident, three good Samaritans helped catch a robbery suspect after they witnessed him stealing an elderly woman’s purse. Those are only a few examples of outreach over the last year. It’s not often, however, that we hear the stories of small, yet equally meaningful good deeds accomplished every day in our community. Earlier this year, three young boys, Davey, Noah and Zane, mowed lawns for donations then used the funds to buy refreshments for our Grove City police officers. On another day, a young resident named Jack flagged down Officer Wilson, just to thank her and share an afternoon snack. Given

t c e n n Co with us! 6 November/December 2019

“turnabout is fair play,” it’s not unusual to see our officers supporting lemonade stands or joining neighborhood basketball pick-up games. The examples are endless. Families are “adopting” streets and taking responsibility for their care; groups are working together to keep our parks and waterways clean; teens are volunteering their time to teach disabled individuals how to ride a bike; kids and adults are serving as Buddies for Buddy Ball participants of all abilities; and young adults spend time dressing up like superheroes and Disney characters, bringing joy to others. Grove City is more than a bustling municipality with thriving commerce and exciting growth. It’s a community full of great neighbors, caring citizens and successful businesses coming together in all situations. In fact, the word “together” pretty much sums up what Grove City is all about, making it a perfect descriptor for our twicenamed Best Hometown in central Ohio. We rejoice together. Grove City’s unmatched, annual community celebrations provide great opportunities to enjoy time with neighbors and make new friends. We reminisce together. From the museum and wonderfully renovated historical sites of our hometown to the Annual Homecoming Celebration, we relish in our opportunities to share memories. We honor together. Always mindful of the individuals and families who have made sacrifices for our safety and security. We work together. Home to some of the most innovative businesses and nonprofits in the nation, Grove City residents believe in supporting local business. As evidenced by the overwhelming show of unity and support, we rally together. When we all work together, we grow stronger as a community. Enjoy the holiday season with your family, friends and neighbors and remember – Together, we have it all. Mayor Richard L. “Ike” Stage

Discovering Our Past Relieffe Grant Barn still stands after 80 years The barn on the grounds of the GrantSawyer Home has an extensive history. As the first settlers in Grove City, Hugh and Catherine Grant purchased the land in 1803, but it was fifth-generation family members who erected the barn in the early 1900s. In 1919, Clarence and Relieffe (Grant) Sawyer and their four-yearold daughter, Ruth, moved into “the house at the end of Park Street” on Haughn Road. The farm served as a destination for many: small planes would land, providing a location for the pilots to rest; passers would camp for days; friendly baseball games between neighboring towns were enjoyed; and pleasant evenings included square dancing on a temporary dance floor positioned in the field. Over the years, several people

rented land from the Sawyers. A gentleman renter, who eventually became Ruth’s husband, started a riding academy on the property in 1940. Lem Seymour operated the academy from the large, newly constructed barn with 20 stalls and plenty of adjoining storage space, including a vast, open second floor. The barn also served as a storage location for Mr. Seymour’s extensive horse-drawn carriage and sleigh collection. One of the sleighs became a necessity after a heavy snowfall in January 1941, when Dr. J.C. Sommer needed reliable transportation for making house calls. The Sawyers used the upper level of the barn to host community gatherings, private celebrations and oldfashioned barn dances. In November 1951, the barn was nearly lost to a

Council Briefs A Budget Overview The holiday season is busy in Grove City, not only with fun events and activities but also important annual Council responsibilities. ‘Tis the season to consider the City Budget for 2020. The budget is divided into two sections: operating and capital improvement funds. Operating funds are those used for day-to-day functions, including personnel and maintenance on streets, buildings and parks. We have an anticipated amount of revenue to fund the City and it’s important we plan for the unexpected “rainy day.” Therefore, it is by design that we do not budget to spend it all, setting aside about three months of operating funds for emergencies. www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

Capital improvements are projects involving the purchase and maintenance of property, buildings and equipment used to provide public services. Some current projects include planned, new City parks such as Beulah and Pinnacle; substantial road improvements including enhancing Southwest Boulevard; and improving and widening Borror Road, a partner project with the developer, Jackson Township and Franklin County. We can’t fund all capital improvement needs at once, so we maintain a five-year “wish list” of projects. Grove City operates on an annual calendar-year budget and City Charter specifies certain steps to ensure a thorough review before it

fire; however, the building’s “modern” brick construction held strong. Usage of the barn varied over the years as it eventually became an intriguing, historical icon. After Clarence passed away in 1968, Relieffe continued to live on the property until her passing in 1987 at the age of 98. Her daughter Ruth then became the sixth and last generation to live there. Shortly before her passing in 2014, she generously sold the property to the City who promised to share its amazing history as a living museum. The property has since undergone detailed, period-accurate restorations. The Grant-Sawyer Home was completed in 2017 and the Relieffe Grant Barn in September of this year. Both areas are open for tours. Contact the Southwest Franklin County Historical Society at www.grovecityohhistory.org or 614-277-3061 for details. is adopted. At the end of each November, City administration submits a budget proposal to Council. In December, Council hosts public budget hearings to discuss revenue estimates and appropriations. As always, public input is welcome and appreciated during this part of the process. The budget must be finalized and passed no later than Dec. 24 and, believe me, we work on it until the deadline. Once all meetings are held and proposals submitted, Council has ongoing authority to adjust the budget as needed and works together with administration to ensure Grove City continues to be the “Best Hometown in central Ohio.” My wife, Twinkle, and I hope you and your family have a wonderful, happy and safe holiday season! See you around town. Roby Schottke Council Member, Ward 4 November/December 2019 7

Development Maintaining the Charm of Historic Town Center From the spooky, fun Boo off Broadway to our festive Christmas Celebration, Grove City’s historic Town Center reflects holiday seasons like no other.

A

s you stroll along the quaint downtown walkways this holiday season, we invite you to think of the reasons you love Town Center. Is it the gas lamps, the tree-lined streets, or the wide array of shops and restaurants? Town Center has always been the heart of Grove City – the original core of the community – and the City has strategically maintained its small-town charm. Starting in the 1980s, the City recognized the importance of a vibrant Town Center and began redeveloping the area to revitalize the character that we know and love today. Pocket green spaces and plazas were introduced, and new municipal buildings constructed to better serve the public. A Town Center Plan was completed in 1987 and many of the guiding principles from that strategy are still in use today; reflected again in the 2008 Town Center Plan and more recent planning efforts, including the new draft Town Center Framework. Within the past five years, more than $30 million has been invested in the area through public and private funding. This investment is reflected in the many local shops and restaurants, our beautiful new library, community spaces, and

8 November/December 2019

roadway improvements. Based on a recent survey of the public regarding their desires and vision for the Town Center, people want more. They envision a vibrant, active Town Center with more restaurants and “things to do.” As described in the GroveCity2050 Community Plan, there is a growing trend for mixed-use walkable areas, where residents can walk to shops, restaurants and other destinations from their homes. This is evident through the success of the new Broadway Station multi-family project, the emergence of new in-fill homes and owners choosing to reinvest in their Town Center properties. Town Center businesses have responded by opening earlier and staying open later to accommodate the growing demand. Yet, there is more opportunity for activity in the Town Center. Several properties, including the former library site and the future Columbus Street plaza, have the potential to bring new residents, shops and restau-

rants to the area. The Schoedinger Funeral and Cremation Services site at Broadway and Cleveland Avenue was also recently approved to relocate to Hoover Road, leaving the site available for redevelopment. One of the primary challenges as development occurs in the Town Center, is how to provide new opportunities while keeping true to the character that residents and visitors love. The City will continue to carefully plan for the Town Center to ensure new development reflects the appeal of the community’s core. Thus, during the holidays and throughout the year, residents and visitors alike experience the traditional, unique charm in our lively Town Center.

Getting Down to Business Lifelong resident Sharon Downs has fostered Grove City’s growth

F

or Sharon Downs, who was born in 1946, growing up in Grove City was good. Local businesses and people were different, technology was sparse, and the city was smaller. But what made her childhood great still exists here; in fact, in its essence, children growing up in Grove City today experience a similarly good childhood. “It’s because of the way we were raised. Basically, it couldn’t have been better, my childhood,” Downs says. “Everybody knew everybody.” But what set Downs apart from other children the most was her early-developed eye for business. She grew up by Beulah Park, and she and her siblings would www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

November/December 2019 9

charge residents 50 cents to park in her family’s yard. They could only fit seven or eight cars, but running a business, no matter the size, suited Downs well. She graduated from Grove City High School before attending Nationwide Beauty Academy. In 1968, she opened her own salon, Castilian Hair Dressers, which she ran for about a decade. In the meantime, Downs had four children: Shane Williams, Shar Weber, Scott Williams and Zachary Downs. Raising four children isn’t an easy feat,

10 November/December 2019

but the naturally entrepreneurial Downs couldn’t be kept away from the business world. In 1986, she and her husband, Joe Downs, opened Zachary’s with the first-ever outdoor dining seating in the area, and the spot quickly became a Town Center staple. All of the food was homemade, and Joe made the pies himself. They employed high school students, who Downs speaks highly of, and always participated in town parades and alumni weekends. Despite working long hours at Zachary’s, Downs still

thought she could – and should – do more. “I always stayed connected with the city. When I was at Zachary’s, there were only eight or 10 of us, and we started the Grove City Town Center organization,” says Downs. “Back then, there wasn’t a whole lot going on and it just was the right thing to do at the time.” With Downs’ help, the organization grew, and the small group of downtown business owners started a program called Clean Sweep, and helped organize flowers and music for Boo on Broadway. As Grove City grew, Downs knew encouraging positive change was important. “I felt like us owners of businesses down there should do our part to come up with different things to get people downtown,” Downs says. “It was grassroots.” Zachary’s shut its doors after 11 years, but Downs’ bug for business wasn’t yet satisfied. Her parents, who were businesspeople themselves, inspired her next venture. After Downs’ mother passed and she was tasked with moving her parents’ belongings out of their Grove City Road home, something dawned on her. “It’s just stuff. We need a place where people can bring their parents’ stuff, where they feel like they’re not setting it at the curb,” Downs says. “That’s how (Red Maple Curio) started, and for 11 years, I had the best customers in the world.” After Red Maple Curio closed, more than three decades after her first salon opened, she put her beauty expertise back to use. Both her daughter and granddaughter went to beauty school so, to give them a home, Downs opened Artistic Angle Hair Salon in 2001. The three generations now work alongside one other at the Broadwaybased salon. Managing so many businesses in one lifetime may seem wild but Downs wouldn’t have it any other way. “I was always just comfortable here. … I felt like this was where I needed to be,” Downs says, “and it has worked out.” www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

But Grove City isn’t just good for business; it’s the perfect place for Downs to be living. In fact, for the last 48 years, she’s lived in a home that she fell in love with in high school, when she babysat for the family who lived there. “It’s always been my dream home, when I was babysitting at 14 years old,” Downs says. Downs has always been heavily involved in her community, starting with the Grove City Community Club in the 1980s. Her mother was a member, and the women with whom she worked inspired Downs. “The ladies of the past were hard workers, loving, got the job done. I could always count on them. They were just the souls of yesterday,” Downs says. “I loved being around them, I loved helping them back then. Here I am at that stage – it’s super.” Downs is also involved in Grove City Buddy Ball and Tree City USA. She is also still an active member of her childhood church, Grove City United Methodist. And while,

yes, Grove City has changed tremendously since her childhood, Downs is still inspired to be an active member of the community. “It’s progress – there’s nothing you can do about it, so you just sit back and hope it all goes in the direction it’s supposed to. And, you know, I think it has,” Downs says. “I’m comfortable here. I’ve been to the same church all my life, I’ve lived here all my life.” As Downs looks to the future, she’s excited to spend more time with her four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She enjoys her clients at Artistic Angle, and still loves living in her dream home with Joe. “I always make this comment to people: what’s there not to love in Grove City? Period. That’s my motto,” says Downs. “We have it all. We have everything you could ever imagine now, compared to when I grew up.”

A Monument to Remember

The Gold Star Families Memorial Monument pays homage to fallen soldiers and their families By Mallory Arnold

I

f you’ve ever strolled through Grove City’s downtown, you may have noticed the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument. Established by Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams, a retired and decorated Marine who fought in World War II, the monument was commissioned by his Medal of Honor Foundation in 2016. His goal is to have a similar monument in all 50 states; so far, there are 43 memorials and counting. A gorgeous addition to the community, the monument stands strong for Gold Star Families. The term is used to describe family members – mothers, fathers, siblings, extended family and more – who have lost a loved one in the military. This monument makes sure no one is forgotten.

Remembering Joey

Resident Michelle Riley is the mother of the late sniper specialist Joseph “Joey” Riley, who was killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2014. He was on a scout team when he passed, designated to make sure common meeting grounds were deemed safe for his peers. “On their list of things they needed before missions were things like first aid and tourniquets,” Riley says. “Whereas we’re here at home, making grocery lists and thinking about what shoes we’re going to buy. You just don’t think about it.” She realizes how mundane our daily problems and worries are, especially when so many military members sacrifice so much every day. It’s her hope that people understand those sacrifices made by active members of the military and the fallen, and have respect for what they do. It’s this reason that the monument means so much to her. “My husband always says that we’re honored and humbled by all the things that are done for us,” Riley says of the Grove City community. “The monument keeps the memory of our son and all of the fallen (alive).” 18 November/December 2019

Though fundraising for the dedication began years prior, the community was inspired to meet their goal after Joey’s passing and finished the project, something that makes Riley very proud. Grove City Division of Police members Officer John Darnell and now retired Sgt. Chris White were instrumental in making this happen, along with the rest of the community, who knew and loved Joey. He was well-liked around Grove City, even by people who only met him once or twice. Riley says his smile was unforgettable and is remembered by all those who were lucky to be greeted by it. “I am really grateful for the things that have been done to make sure he’s not forgotten,” Riley says. www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

“People assume Memorial Day is hard for me – but really, that day is wonderful because I know everyone is thinking of Joey.” Many people conflate veterans with military members who died during combat, she points out.

“Joey will never be a veteran,” Riley says, “because he’ll never come home to us. We have a great amount of respect for veterans – they know loss like we do, they have friends and family who they lost too.”

Michelle Riley meeting Hershel “Woody” Williams, whose foundation commissioned the monument.

When Williams and his foundation came to Grove City to talk about the monument, Riley was able to meet the veteran and discuss how the structure impacts her life.

Better lives

ONE story at a time. “I was not in good shape mentally. I’ve never had a serious injury and in my head I was pretty devastated. After a quad tendon rupture in the 2018 CrossFit Open and then a labrum repair, Orthopedic ONE got me back to doing the thing I love most. They definitely went above and beyond the call of duty and one year to the date, I was able to return to the 2019 Open.” - Dan Bailey, CrossFit Games Athlete

“God bless Woody Williams,” she says. “A lot of people have ideas, but they never do anything about them. But it meant enough for him to honor the families of the fallen.”

Never Forget

This past September, local Gold Star mother Diana Forrester unexpectedly passed away. Discover Grove City had the privilege of speaking with Forrester before she passed. Forrester lived in Grove City most of her life, and when she heard the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument was going up, she wasn’t sure how to feel. It wasn’t until she met Williams that she realized the importance of his mission. “He was someone who realized that it wasn’t just wives or mothers that lose someone in war – it’s the entire family,” Forrester said. Forrester’s son, Shawn T. Hannon, died seven years ago, but the new monument helped Forrester meet other families with similar experiences and make friends, like Michelle Riley. The two were able to talk with each other about their sons and relate to each other’s experiences. Riley says she admired Forrester’s steadfast faith and was inspired by her feisty, determined demeanor. Forrester always worked in spreading the Gold Star Family message: to never forget. 20 November/December 2019

Prior to her death, Forrester told her friend, “You don’t get over it, but I feel reconciled with Shawn being gone.”

Going the Extra Mile

The monument wasn’t the only place of reflection for the mothers. In 2013, a 13-year-old Eagle Scout commissioned the creation of the Master Sgt. Shawn T. Hannon Battle Cross Memorial in Henceroth Park, where Joey also has a statue alongside another local Grove City fallen soldier, Eric Bernholtz. Forrester loved seeing when people left flowers and candy on the bronze statue. She said it’s just another sign of how the Grove City community pulls together to support and remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Riley also notes the care and love the City has extended during mourning. “I can’t say enough about the Grove City community and how everyone came together to support us,” Riley says. “Especially our Grove City police department.” Division staff watched over Riley and her husband for two weeks after they lost Joey. During those late nights when neither could sleep, they would go downstairs and peer out the window to see officers there, keeping watch of the house. It made them feel supported and cared for. “Don’t hesitate to ask (Gold Star Families) about their fallen loved ones, because when we get to talk about them, it makes us feel better,” Riley says. “It makes us feel like people can get to know them through us.” Still, the shining black monument stands strong as a rock for all grieving military families. “It’s a lonely place to be,” Forrester said. “The Gold Star Monument has helped me realize that I’m not alone.”

“Eateries, entertainment and fitness options right outside my door!”

“The whole community feels like a part of my home. Just outside my door I can take an exercise class, enjoy a walk along the woods, meet friends for lunch, play bridge, and much more!”

A Home of History

W

Carrie and Shaun Dunn 22 November/December 2019

ithin the past few years, the downtown area has really flourished with storefronts and restaurants, bringing new life to the Grove City community. Right around the corner from all the bustle is a beautiful brick home with a front porch larger than some average size rooms. In a roundabout way, Grove City has this house to thank for the downtown. But first, some history. Recently purchased by Carrie and Shaun Dunn in 2017, the homeowners reference a document that accompanied the listing of the house and outlines its history. According to that document, William Foster Breck and his family moved to the now Grove City area in the mid-1800s. Breck had a vision, but he first started by building the brick house – then started on something bigger. In his own living room, Breck and three others planned the village of Grove City.

The homeowners go on to explain that after Breck’s death, the White family purchased the property in 1868, coining the term The White House. In 1978, the home became a Historic Ohio Homestead. The property was then purchased, renovated and recently bought by the Dunns. “My cousin’s son came over one day and said, ‘We learned about your house in school,’” says Carrie. “I think it’s important to keep this history alive – and to actually see it makes it real.” The couple wanted more space for their teenage children, so the spacious floor plan with its rich character and massive front porch were instant selling points. Original doorknobs, some flooring, the banister and other small details still exist. The home is also mere feet from the busy downtown. The Dunns enjoy listening to the live music from street festivals, watching parades www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

pass by and walking a few minutes to Transcend Coffee + Roastery. “Originally, we weren’t very connected to Grove City but (The White House) has made us feel more connected; we’re able to use it as an ice breaker to meet new people because everyone wants to know about the house,” Shaun says. And just as the Brecks and the Whites sat on the front porch watching Grove City grow, the Dunns are doing the same. Lydia Freudenberg is an editor. arter Stedtefeld starts his day like any other high school student: he wakes up for school, drops off his younger brother, goes to class, eats lunch and waits for the final bell. But after class lets out, Stedtefeld heads in multiple directions. In addition to playing school soccer and golf, service is a huge part of his life. From student council to volunteering in the community and other groups, this Grove City Christian School senior is always busy. “I started serving my community when I joined student council in the sixth grade,” Stedtefeld says. “Ever since, I have made sure to go out and serve other people.” Stedtefeld is also a member of National Honor Society and stays involved with his church, Buckeye Christian Church, which has rooted his sense of serStedtefeld volunteers with his school and his church. vice even more. “You have to make sure you are giving back to your community and you are watching out for each other,” he says. “I believe a strong community can make anywhere a great place to live.” His family has had a huge impact on Stedtefeld and the way he views community and service. His father is a firefighter paramedic and his mother is a teacher. And since Stedtefeld is close with his family, he plans to stay close post-graduation and hopes to attend The Ohio State University on a pre-medicine track. “I’m not completely sure what I want to specialize in at this point, but I know I want to study medicine because I’m super interested in science; but also because that’s another good way to give back to your

I just want everyone to feel the love no matter where they are in their life.” Stedtefeld can feel overwhelmed, though. He says it’s easy to get burned out, so he reminds himself about the benefit of his service work and does reflective thinking to stay grounded and focused. In all that he’s done, Stedtefeld advises those younger than him to try as much as they can while the option is still available. “Sometimes it is hard to see past our own desires, but it just gives you this feeling that cannot be beat,” he says. “Try new things, even if it is just one time. That one time can make a difference.” Zoë Glore is an assistant editor. Feedback welcome at zglore@ cityscenemediagroup.com www.DiscoverGroveCity.com
