Welcome to Granville! Thank you for opening this edition of Granville Magazine. Please, find a cozy spot to sit; maybe one that will transport you to the Buxton Inn, or to a bench on Broadway, or to a building at Denison University. Ideally, you’ll find a spot where you will feel as if you’re home with us in Granville. This year, as I paused to reflect on what makes this community special, I kept coming back to a familiar tune. I believe it’s one that captures the essence and the feel of Granville, and I think many Granvillians would agree. Making your way in the world today Takes everything you’ve got; Taking a break from all your worries Sure would help a lot. Wouldn’t you like to get away? Sometimes you want to go Where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came. The song, of course, is from Cheers, the NBC sitcom that debuted in 1982. Clichéd as it may be, Granville seems to be a welcome respite from the bustle of life, just like the place from Cheers. Strolling through the Village brings many visitors to a safer, quieter and simpler time. It’s rare to find a small town that still does “small town” well, but here in Granville, we’ve got it right. Granville truly is a place where residents and visitors wander through the Farmers Market on Saturday mornings to pick up groceries. Granvillians absolutely bump into each other, and stop to chat on the sidewalk on the way to the post office, bank or pharmacy. Visitors do slow down when they step into the Village, pausing to linger over their cup of coffee or Whit’s treat at one of the inviting tables that line Broadway. It’s a small town where each and every face can become a new friend, and you’ll find that locals are eager to point out interesting sites and attractions. They’ll readily explain how the Village was founded by people from New England and Connecticut more than 200 years ago. And they won’t let you go without recommending their favorite local shop, watering hole or B&B. The architectural style will bring you back to a place with which you’re somehow familiar, even if you’re from somewhere far away. Many of our buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and though they are historic, you’ll find that they’re filled with new, fresh things for you to purchase or learn about. We really believe that Granville is a relaxing day trip, or week trip, or new home. When you visit us, your worries will effortlessly disappear. We’re so excited for you to discover all the things that we already know and love about this Village, and when you visit, please plan to stop by the Chamber office in the heart of Granville and say hello. We hope that, as you leaf through this edition of Granville Magazine, you’ll be transported into the Village, whether you’re near or far. We hope that you’ll rediscover all of the places you love in the Village. And most of all, we hope that you’ll come and stay awhile. It’s true. Granville is where everybody knows your name. Cheers,

The Village of
ranville
But don’t worr y – there have been no sightings of such a creature at the Alligator Mound. Lepper believes when early European settlers came to the New World and heard the stories of the under water panther, the depiction might have been interpreted as an alligator, thus the current name was born. The First Settlers
Alligator Mound
Hopewell Culture The Village of Granville is proud to share its historical connection to the early American Indian tribes. As far back as 200 A.D. a group of natives who identified with the Hopewell culture lived, farmed and traded in this area of Ohio. The Hopewell culture encompassed many tribes that typically resided near water ways so they could support their agriculturally-focused lifestyle. They also had an intricate trading route, which ran from the Great Lakes all the way to sunny Florida. The culture is believed to have collapsed around 400 A.D. for unknown reasons. Archaeologists hypothesize that the communities that made up the culture began to create more advanced technology – like the bow and arrow – and began to live in one place rather than relocating for fresh resources like those in the Hopewell culture.
Even though indigenous peoples occupied the area of Granville, the Village was not established until 1805. Several years prior, in 1797, the land was sur veyed, producing a few units of 4,000 acres which were set aside for Revolutionar y War veterans. The Welshman Sampson Davis from Philadelphia bought the first unit, and by 1801 he began selling off sections of his land. Today, the quaint streets of Granville proudly occupy the street names Jones Road and Welsh Hills Road in honor of the many Welsh settlers. Soon after, New Englanders began to head west and settle in the Village. Eventually the remaining land was purchased and after a public square, school and library were built, about 150 New Englanders packed their wagons and headed off for a brighter future in what is now the Village we love. The Buxton Inn
Alligator Mound Located at the end of Br yn Du Drive overlooking the Raccoon Creek valley, this ancient mound is a calming sight to obser ve. The exact date of creation is unknown, some archaeologist believe it could be at least 2,000 years old. Peering at the grass-covered mound, some may wonder where the alligator shape lies. Archaeologist Brad Lepper believes the name derives from American Indian tradition and their beliefs in the mythological under water panther. The creature is said to have strong jaws that do not let go and resides in the bodies of water from which American Indians fished for food. The creature is known to create whirlpools with its long, alligator-like tail so it can entrench its surroundings. 6

The Granville Inn
The Buxton Inn When Orrin Granger arrived in the Village he saw opportunity and hungry faces. Granger opened the Tavern in 1812, which featured the first post office, a stagecoach court, a dining room and a ballroom to suit the taste of the sophisticated residents. While the parties were being held in the ballroom, coach drivers relaxed in the cellar next to a stone fireplace. Coachmen would consume warm meals they cooked in the fireplace and slept on straw mattresses with full bellies. Even President William H. Harrison, who was close with Granger, visited the Buxton for evening parties where crowds would cheer with glee at his arrival. The Buxton has been consistently occupied since 1812, but it did meet tough times in the 1970s. The Village briefly considered knocking the structure down, but a preservationist by the name of Robbins Hunter and his friends, the Orr family, were able to purchase the property and make tasteful renovations. The Orr family managed the inn until December 2014. Today, the Buxton is overseen by Robert Schilling, also a preser vationist, who has been restoring central Ohio locations since the 1980s.

Featuring guest rooms with all the works, contemporary meeting spaces, a grand ballroom and a plethora of options in the dining room, the Granville Inn is a staple of the community. Business meetings, weddings or just a weekend getaway, the Granville Inn is perfect for it all. Best of all, the Granville Inn sits on East Broadway in the heart of Granville. In 2015, the Granville Inn under went a whopping $9 million renovation, and if you thought it was beautiful before, you haven’t seen anything yet. Granville is known for its quaint, small-town New England feel, but the Granville Inn takes a major twist. The expansive front lawn is still used for polo, the eight buildings (mansion, field house, carriage house, pool house turned ar t center, spring house, gardener’s cottage, laundr y cottage, horse barn, and patios and gardens) were all once used for what their names implied. When walking through the mansion, you can feel the presence of the former homeowners. Nearly 115 years old, the home is still thriving. In fact, John Sutphin Jones, who built Br yn Du, collaborated with Columbus-based architect Frank Packard on the design in 1905. The two would collaborate again in 1922 to build the Granville Inn. Jones then hired famed golf course designer Donald Ross to design and build the Denison Golf Club at Granville. In a literal sense, Jones helped build the foundation of Granville. Fast-for ward to the 2000s. In 2002, following a slew of ownership changes, Granville residents set to vote on whether the Village should buy Br yn Du. A majority of Granvillians supported the purchase, and it was done. Today, Br yn Du hosts a variety of art shows and unique public events. The various Br yn Du sites are also available to be reser ved for private events. What was once a sprawling private residence in Granville is now a public space for learning, culture and heritage. • www.granvilleoh.com

Granville is many things – friendly, charitable and comfortable, to name a few. One of the best things that Granville is, however, is fun. Ask 10 people in the Village their favorite thing to do, and you’ll get just as many diverse and impassioned answers. Relaxing and unwinding in the Village is hard to beat, but sometimes visitors want to add a little spice to their stay, and there is no better place to do that than Granville. 10

For many of us, the time when we sit down at the table is the most important time of the day. One of Granville’s most palpable traits is its ability to slow its residents and visitors down to help them enjoy what’s around them: the scenery, the surrounding faces, the moment in time. The restaurants and food choices around Granville are no exception. Slow down, enjoy the company of others and taste all of the delicious dishes Granville has to offer. 14

The Central Ohio Youth Ballet has been teaching children to embrace art through dance for more than 20 years in Licking County, and aims to bring dancers of all levels together to embrace inclusivity. Granville Boy Scout Troop 65 is also teaching young men to love the outdoors. Camping, hiking and wilderness sur vival are key skills; however, the Scouts are also learning to work as a team, and appreciate the little things and the value of hard work. Adults looking for a little bit of fun while benefiting the Village through either volunteerism or monetary donations will find myriad organizations with which to involve themselves. Granville Arts Commission is a major supporter of artists in the Village – and Granville residents know what an art-rich community it is! For volunteer efforts pertaining to the children of Granville, try the Kiwanis Club of Granville. wetlands, woods and all green spaces that surround this gorgeous community. Granville is also bountiful with organizations that aim to provide services to the members of the community who may be going through times of need. SPARK LLC provides residents with disabilities options that may seem out of reach: community integration, employment and personal care, to name just a few. Few things are as terrifying as the thought of spending the night without shelter, so for low-income or homeless members of Licking County, the Licking County Coalition for Housing is there. And for too many, reliable health care, education and steady finances are not a certainty. United Way of Licking County is taking action to make life more stable for these people. No community is without its insecurities. However, the diligent work of Granville’s amazing civic and community organizations is making the Village an easier place to live for many. Whether the services they provide to you be simply helping your child branch out and grow, or keeping your family on its feet, the Granville community will be there to help. •

Living in Granville means living in a culturally- and historically-rich community that values its past and works to make the future even better. A hometown right down to the origin of its name, Granville was founded in 1805, just two years after Ohio received statehood, by settlers from Granville, Massachusetts. The Village features New England styling and the comfort and warm community of a small town. Even before settlers and before Granville was, well, Granville, indigenous peoples called the area home. The community is proud of its Alligator Ef figy Mound,
where pre-Columbian peoples paid tribute to an animal from American Indian mythology. The mound is believed to have been built between 800 and 1200 A.D. Living in Granville is easy. With a major focus on the arts, histor y and education, Granville’s..culture is rich, and making the transition from a..regular..visitor to a full-time resident is surely tempting to all who visit its B&Bs and inns. •

In today’s world of big business, it can be hard to tell who actually owns a funeral home. We’d like you to know that unlike some other local firms, we are in fact, family owned. So the next time you drive past our firm, and it looks to you like it’s a familyowned business, there’s a good reason for it... it is. 133 S.
