Welcome to Licking County My fascination with doors started when I was a kid. I grew up in an old farmhouse outside of Granville, and I remember thinking it was the greatest thing because we had two front doors. Like many old farmhouses, ours had a wide front porch that spanned the width of the house and on either end of the porch there were twin doors; one entered into the dining room, one into the living room. They were nine paned oak doors with intricate knobs, knockers and skeleton key locks. When my parents bought the house, those doors had already spent a century dutifully hanging on their hinges, doing what doors do – keeping out winter and letting in spring – but they had a bigger purpose, I think. They welcomed family and friends. We took the idea that doors were the beginning and the end of journeys to heart this year. We partnered beautiful Licking County doors – many of which have been opening and closing for centuries around here – with engaging, enlightening and thoughtful interview pieces. We talked with people from our communities that are up-and-comers, old hats, and everyone in between. They spoke with us about Licking County’s love for the arts and our long-standing commitment to locally produced beer, wine and food. We were given history lessons and schooled on the county’s vibrant university scene. We talked curated retail, unique lodging and the idea of gathering together. We hung out with a family that spends its time on the other side of doors, in the great outdoors. We listened to their passion for their passions. It was an amazing experience for us, and we are so happy and proud to be able to share the stories of nine Licking Countians who can’t imagine being anywhere else but here, at this moment in time. My advice to you? Come. Come to this place that we call home, find a door and open it. You won’t be disappointed with what you find on the other side.

Wander through a Licking County community on any given Friday or Saturday night, and stop to listen. You may be pulled this way, toward the thumping of rock or hip-hop that shakes the decades-old walls of Thirty One West. Or perhaps that way, toward the low, hushed discussion from art connoisseurs taking in the views at Denison Art Space. Not far off, the cool evening air brings the sounds of chirping crickets and hooting owls – a gentle reminder that, just a short walk away, lies the natural beauty of Licking County. And however stunning those views may be, man-made arts in the county stack up, too.

Feel Weathervane Playhouse theatre manager Kaitlin Brucker sits on Weathervane’s main stage, the lights illuminating her as if she is preparing a monologue. Candidly, she states that though certain theatre companies in the county may often get tied together, the organizations are unique. Other communities might call the relationship between Weathervane and The Midland Theatre competitive but, like many Licking County residents, Kaitlin knows otherwise.

So that’s really interesting – two different performing arts venues to have in just this small area.” Visitors are often surprised to find that the curtain doesn’t close just at the Midland or Weathervane. Licking County Players have been moving guests and residents to laughter or tears for more than 50 years, though not always under the same name. The troupe puts on eight shows a season, so between the three professional theater companies in Licking County, catching a show is easy.

local galleries. Denison Art Space in Newark is home to plenty of fresh faces and contemporary art, and the floorto-ceiling windows gracing the gallery front reminds visitors that they’re in the middle of dynamic downtown Newark. Nearby sits the exciting main gallery at The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology, where STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) is not just on display, but front and center. And for some retail therapy, just a few steps away is the Licking County Arts Gallery, also housed in the Works.

For Kaitlin and many others like her, personal goals are rooted in those who will one day fill her shoes. “I think it’s so important for kids to get involved in arts,” she says. “If we can do a big, big fundraiser where we’re splitting everything between the organizations to create scholarship funds and doing financial aid, that would be awesome.”

See In Licking County, the magnificence of the area, natural and unnatural, is reflected in the local arts. “I think there’s more art coming to fruition here in the county that’s making us step back and say, ‘Wow, that thing that I see every day when I drive down 21st Street is actually kind of beautiful,’” she says. “You can appreciate that more. You see that in visual arts, and that’s really nice.” At Sunbear Studio, arts patrons will be delighted with the variety of mediums used to create, including photography, stained glass, craft jewelry and more. It is also the personal studio of pastel artist Meredith Martin, so visitors will feel at home in the studio. Licking County residents and visitors have the arts world at their fingertips through Sunbear, where the pool of classes is both far-stretching and deep. For a more traditional gallery experience, follow the sounds of strings to Art @ 43023, where you’ll likely find a violinist or guitarist performing outside. Jewelry, paintings and pottery are main attractions, but the warm and relaxed atmosphere takes a stand against the stuffiness often found in big-city galleries.

“I like the location where (the gallery) is in the Works because you walk right in, and you’re seeing this art gallery, then you can walk down and do what you do at the science museum,” Kaitlin says. “It’s really interesting putting those two – arts and science – together. I think it’s great they’re jump-starting that.”

Listen The music scene in the county leaves nothing to be desired. Classical, rock, country, hip-hop; Licking County hosts it all and, like most establishments in the area, has been built thanks to the overwhelming spirit of collaboration. From 1928 to 1978, for half a century, The Midland Theatre was an institution in the arts sphere of Licking County. Residents came dressed in their finest to take in the lavish marble and red velvet interior. Between ’78 and ’92, the Midland stood unused, beautiful and empty due to a blizzard that had cut the power and destroyed the boilers. That is, until Dave Longaberger saw to it that the Midland was restored to – and surpassed – its original glory. Now, the Midland hosts a wealth of acts from a variety of backgrounds, each ready to marvel at the theatre’s splendor.

Visitors would do well to carry a notebook when visiting the community, because they may be struck by sudden inspiration. With such a deep ocean of arts in the county, finding the right way to spend a night will be easy. Finding the time to fit it all in, however, might be a bit more challenging – as it surely is for residents. “If I left the area, it would be so hard, because I don’t know if I would find this somewhere else,” says Kaitlin. “It’s experiences with everyone that come out of all the arts here in Licking County.” Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra

The Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra knows well the importance of collaboration. The orchestra has filled the halls of Denison University, the Midland Theatre, Dawes Arboretum and more with sweet music. But the resident orchestra is no stranger to the contemporary, and can perform contemporary music with the best. “The symphony brings in Black Violin, so that’s a more modern, relevant group duo,” says Kaitlin. “Not only are our 60plus audiences enjoying this, our 25-, 26-, 30-year olds are enjoying it, too, and it’s bringing us together.”

Thirty One West, Newark

Licking County’s newest music venue has no shortage of musicians to get feet tapping, hips swaying or heads banging. Thirty One West rounds out the area’s live music offerings, opening its stage to acts known and unknown, local and foreign. On one night, Thirty One West’s more than 100-year-old home in downtown Newark may jump with rock; the next, it might slow heartbeats with poetic melodies. “You have the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra and then you have Thirty One West, which are two different forms of music that you’re bringing in,” says Kaitlin. “You can spread that out 12

Step into Licking County, and whether you’re staying for a day trip, a weekend trip or an extended vacation, the county becomes home. Make note of the faces you see on the drive in; you might be grabbing a drink with them later at the Market Street Soda Works, or sitting next to them at the show later on at Weathervane Playhouse. But the first person to greet you is the person checking you in at a hotel, bed and breakfast, or community inn. And visitors should feel lucky for it.

Collaboration, not Competition The hotel and lodging business is known to be competitive. Still, DoubleTree by Hilton Newark General Manager, Kendra Proudfit, knows area lodging representatives by name – not because of some rivalry, but because she often refers guests, and receives guest referrals, from those managers. After all, she says, it’s about finding the perfect lodging option for each individual. “We’ve got to have that change; we’ve got to have that knowledge of what

natural light will bring guests back to the present. For an even more historic stay, the Buxton Inn will amaze guests, with its 1812 roots on display. Recently renovated and restored rooms harken back to the days when Granville – like the whole of the United States – was much smaller. In all, Granville is the place for guests looking for a storied stay. “Life got too busy,” says Kendra. “Fortunately, we have enough stuff here to say, ‘Take a break.’ Life is good.”

“It’s nothing for us to pick up the phone and call the Courtyard, or to call Hampton Inn or Cherry Valley Lodge,” Kendra says. “We just pick up the phone and refer people all the time. We wouldn’t do that if we didn’t have the comfort and knowledge that they’re going to treat our guests like we would.”

But if you’re hoping to pack it in overnight or experience what it’s like to be a full-time Licking County resident, the area is happy to accommodate. “Just get away from life and relax for a minute,” says Kendra. “Take in the nature; see the animals and the farms and the beautiful landscaping that people have.” Lodging in the county isn’t hard to come by; the difficulty is in choice. Rest easy knowing that Licking County will always be there to welcome you with open arms for your next trip, whether you decide to make your bed in a camper, bed and breakfast, or hotel. “Guests leave with good memories, they leave with great experiences,” says Kendra. “But when people leave, they leave happy, they leave rested and there’s just a sense of comfort.”

Anyone who knows Bill Weaver, World Heritage Ohio Executive Committee, knows he wears many hats. The former principal in the Licking Valley School District, executive of the Longaberger Company and dedicated Licking County spokesperson is so passionate about the county that in five minutes, he can get even the most distant of people excited about the community’s history. As a disclaimer, it’s rare that you talk for only five minutes with him.

Like many longtime Licking County residents, Bill knows that the history of the area is important, and preserving that history is paramount to the county’s growth.

Way, Way Back Of all counties in Ohio, Licking County can trace its history back through people the longest. In fact, the earliest peoples known in Ohio were known to be in Licking County 14,000 years ago. And that wasn’t because they were drawn by the natural splendor of the area, though we’re sure that was a contributing factor.

“The land of Licking County – besides its beauty, of course – contained the most important and basic resources a native person coming down to the Ohio area would need,” says Bill. “Those are salt, deer and flint.” The earth that lies beneath Licking County’s roads, paths and homes contains one of the highest salt concentrations of Ohio’s 88 counties. That attracted deer to the area, which attracted American Indians. As they began to dig to make weapons, they were surprised to find a 10-mile-long layer of flint: “One big, honkin’ chunk of rock,” says Bill. The flint provided the perfect foundation for weapons, tools and trade. To top it off, the impurities in the earth make Licking County’s flint unlike any other flint in the world. In flint here, you’ll find rich blues, greens and yellows – brilliance that even pragmatic people like the American Indians of the time could not ignore.

major significance to those who used landmarks to travel long before maps. The hand pointed toward the flint quarries at Flint Ridge. The Octagon Earthworks was built 2,000 years ago to measure the northernmost rise position of the moon; a cycle that repeats itself every 18.6 years.

“It makes a cycle that is 18.6 years old. How many people would it take over time to figure that out? It’s a wonder. It’s an astrological wonder,” says Bill. “They were geniuses. They knew what they were doing.” Pipes, pots and other goods were found in the mounds, artifacts from a culture of peoples long gone, whose influence is still tangible on the residents of Licking County today. And it’s important that Licking County still recognizes the mounds’ greatness. “They’re geometrically-precise, astronomically-aligned monuments,” says Bill. “The exquisitely-crafted objects associated with them prove extraordinary achievements in design, artistry and engineering.”

“Licking County was a veritable hub; we’ve been a hub for transportation in Ohio since our beginnings 14,000 years ago,” says Bill. “Places like Granville, Hanover, Johnstown, Utica and Alexandria sprung up, and this became an agricultural-slash-industrial county in Ohio that moved forward.”

The Midland Theatre, Newark

The first shovel of dirt dug for the canal system connecting Portsmouth, Ohio to Cleveland was taken from Heath. This canal, once finished, connected Portsmouth to Cleveland, effectively making Licking County a major stopping point for travelers and traders. In addition to the canal, the Pennsylvania Train Station moved goods and people both north and south, and east and west. That’s not all, though; the electric trolley station was also a major transport station connecting communities within Licking County. In fact, the CN&Z (Columbus to Newark to Zanesville) was one of the

very first interurban lines in the United States, linking Newark to Granville. “If you were in downtown Newark and you wanted to have a great weekend, you just jumped on that thing and you’d go to Blackhand Gorge,” says Bill. “It was a neat mode of transportation, and real important to Licking County.”

Now It’s obvious that Licking County is experiencing a major revitalization. What’s also obvious is that those revitalizing the area care about preservation. Rather than knocking down old buildings to make way for

what’s new, movers and shakers in Licking County are buying what’s old, restoring it to its prime. “Licking County philanthropists have such a synergy and consortium of, ‘Let’s save it, preserve it, revitalize it,’” says Bill. “Those are indications and evidences of this new sense of renovating, renewing, preserving.” With Dave Longaberger’s purchase and restoration of The Midland Theatre, the recently-completed renovation of the Licking County Courthouse, Thirty One West’s new success and the communal passion for seeing the doors of the Louis Sullivan Bank Building open once again, it’s clear that the community truly cares for the future – and the history – of this remarkable and thriving community. “We’re going back to some basic things; the land. … We are going back to the importance of health and social interaction,” says Bill. “We are currently undergoing a thorough and amazing revitalization of Licking County.”

If there’s anything that truly embodies the spirit of a community, it’s food. Food brings us together, and few things are more human than sitting down with good friends and close family to enjoy a delicious meal together. Greg Tracey, Owner, Moe’s Original Bar B Que

with Moe’s, a chain started in Colorado. After seeing Asheville’s efforts bringing local restaurant owners together and encouraging the spirit of friendly competition, Greg was inspired. But he and his wife wanted to come back home.

Tasty Buns & Craft Beer Week

As Licking County booms with arts, education, and natural and human history, so does the food in the community. And as any foodie in the area can tell you, it’s increasingly hard to resist the delicious smells that waft up and down the streets of Granville, Newark and throughout Licking County.

“We wanted to come back, but we wanted to do something big,” he says. “There was one reason we came back: just the pride of where you’re born and raised. If you’re going to do something in life, make it big.” Within two years, Greg opened the doors of the Granville Moe’s location,

threw a food truck into the mix, then opened the second brick and mortar in downtown Newark. But his story isn’t unique. Scott Wilkins, co-owner of Mai Chau on Prospect, also cut his teeth in Asheville, though he and his wife and co-owner, Ashley Wilkins, drew their inspiration for Mai Chau from their travels in Vietnam. The Wilkins started with a food truck, and quickly expanded to a brick and mortar in Granville. With similar history, Scott and Greg formed a fast friendship, hoping to bring the fierce love of

Coming Back Home Just a few years ago, it wasn’t so easy finding a variety of local food. Now, discovering locally owned and operated restaurants is as simple as stepping out your front door and following the scent. Some of Licking County’s best restaurateurs have left, only to return in recent years and bring all that they’ve learned back home. Restaurants geared up once again for the third annual Wing Wars at Homestead Beer Co. in August. Tickets were capped at 200 and the competition was, for the first time, exclusive to food trucks for ease. The real competition seemed between two friendly rivals.

“This is a hard business. It’s tough to survive and make money,” says Greg. “But I think the way I see it, and the way Scott sees it, and a lot of other restaurants, (is) let’s work together, you know?” That vision was realized with Tasty Buns and Craft Beer Week and the annual Wing War.

Cooking Together During the last week of March, restaurants and food trucks were brought together by Explore Licking County and LickingEats.com for the first-ever Tasty Buns and Craft Beer Week. The rules were simple: make a new menu item, put it on a bun, list it at $6. “Tasty Buns was great for the community; especially for the breweries, too,” Greg says. “Just for people to see these different places they can go eat.” Visitors and residents who missed out on Tasty Buns don’t have to worry: 2017 was just the beginning. The Pub on Broadway’s Ricky Bobby, the Sriracha Pork Sammy from Snapshots Lounge and the Blue & Q from Barrel & Boar may not be next year’s exact items, but Licking County surely won’t disappoint. And the summer wasn’t over yet. 24

“The first year, we won people’s choice, Mai Chau won judge’s choice. … And we won last year,” says Greg, standing next to a tall trophy emblazoned with “WING WAR 2017 GRAND CHAMPION.” “We came away with the victory over Mai Chau again. This one was a little slimmer, but it was really fun. It’s a great thing for the community.”

Old and New Greg makes clear that the most successful restaurants seem to be the ones that work with the community. He marvels at the new places in town, like food truck Simply Fit and the best pizza place that nobody could get into for months, Elliot’s Wood Fired Kitchen & Tap. “I remember as a kid growing up here, there was some stuff to do, and then it went a little downhill,” he says. “Thirty One West has sold-out shows, they’re booking acts people don’t know. … We have arts places, places to shop and tons of little eateries.”

For the early risers, Early Birds Breakfast will get you started with great service and some fantastic huevos rancheros, stuffed French toast and grits. And for the visitor on the go, Moe’s and Mai Chau are far from the only food trucks in the area. Poppy’s Roadside Diner serves up fantastic burgers and sandwiches, Murray’s Old Time BBQ features some seriously addictive barbecue, and Hogg Head’s Blue Smoke Barbecue does the basics right, serving sides of macaroni and cheese, baked beans, cheesy potatoes, and cole slaw. For lovers of breakfast and breakfast sandwiches, stop by SteamRoller Bagel Sandwiches, where food is served one of three ways: out of a truck, out of the brick and mortar store, or out of the truck parked inside the brick and mortar store. Still, Licking County’s longtime restaurants don’t disappoint. The family-ownedand-operated Velvet Ice Cream and Ye Olde Mill is testament to that fact, and you can find visitors from all over Ohio piling through the doors to try a taste of its ice creams, which have been sampled for more than 100 years. “If you don’t just get off your butt and go to these bars and breweries, all of them are available in retail,” says Rob. “I’ve got a six-pack of both Buckeye Lake Blonde and Tenpenny from Homestead in my fridge.” Trek Brewing Company doubles as a spot for the community to gather, as well as a brewery. At 1487 Brewery, you can taste what Bavarians tasted 230 years ago as founder and owner Ben King adheres to old-school German purity laws. Relaxing is easy in all of Licking County, but you can go pro at DankHouse Brewing Co. Or, for a more country experience, head over to Bucks Brewing Co. Then, try craft brews with a view at The Granville Brewing Company. Suffice to say, Licking County has something for every beer drinker. As a matter of fact, it also has something for every wine drinker.

“It’s really neat for the kids to experience that slowness, and that intentional being outside,” says Ian Meske, father. “Especially on the multi-use trails and seeing other people biking and running and walking as well, it’s pretty neat for them. Leona grew up in Licking County, but moved around through Virginia and North Carolina. Ian, on the other hand, grew up in Clintonville, and took up residence in Fort Collins, Colo. for a while. Despite their travels, they’re thrilled to be in Licking County, and Leona has enjoyed rediscovering her home, and introducing it to Ian and their children. “I definitely have this feeling that Licking County is home,” says Ian. “In green spaces, you hear the birds singing, you hear the insects communicating and you have that quiet.”

“I would go creeking at Lobdell, it’s really pretty there,” he says. “There’s a rock wall on one side, and it’s really cool. We hike a lot at Lobdell and Spring Valley Nature Preserve, that’s pretty fun, too.”

During her first week working with the inn, when buying lunch, the man serving her and her co-workers looked at Linda and frankly stated, “You’re new.” “That’s how I knew I wasn’t in Columbus,” says Linda. “Not only did he know I was new, he knew who I was with and what I was doing. Though a stay in Licking County is always marked by R&R, it can be difficult to ignore deadlines. But for visitors staying in the Granville Inn for no reason other than pleasure, Linda is asked for casual recommendations all the time. “I have people who regularly ask, ‘Where can I get a cup of coffee?’ or, ‘Where can my family grab a casual bite to eat?’” says Linda. “Like me, any of the locals around are happy to lend that advice. It’s a nice place for people to come; it’s close to the city, but you’re a distance away.”

A New Generation As Licking County grows and expands, it fosters a rich, well-rounded generation of children growing up in the community. In the county, that generation will grow to understand that experience comes out of buying local, an experience they won’t get from the Internet. Lenise says she saw that developing firsthand after her daughter bought a book from Kicks Mix Bookstore. “She asked if she could run down to the book shop and see what they had,” says Lenise. “Not only did she spend her own money, but she got to start forming a relationship with the shop owners. It’s especially important for kids, too, getting to know your neighbors. It’s making her feel connected.” Lenise notes that many local places are mixing retail with education; The

All of these things matter about how people feel about their home. Art makes people feel good about their home.”

And that’s not just for longtime students and alumni; families of new students, campus visitors and potential students on college visits are all charmed by Denison’s gorgeous and historic campus. But it’s not just the aesthetic that makes Denison unique; it’s also the programs offered, and the history that fills each corner of campus. “We’re extremely fortunate to have a nationally recognized liberal arts college right in the heart of Licking County,” Suzanne says. “Denison not only offers students access to the highest quality academics, but also offers residents exceptional access to concerts, lectures and theatre.”

Central Ohio Technical College/Ohio State University-Newark

Founded in 1831, Denison’s history is robust. The senior residential hall Bancroft House was a stop on the Underground Railroad. A former professor was a local leader in the anti-slavery movement. In 1832, a year before Oberlin College became the first coeducational college in the U.S., the Granville Female Seminary was formed. The seminary was incorporated into Denison in 1900. Since its inception, it’s obvious that Denison has been a staple in education in the country, and Licking County makes a perfect home.

“Looking back to the founding of Denison University in 1831, its founders brought higher education to the village of Granville because they firmly believed that education was the key to the future,” says Suzanne. “Education was the cornerstone for cultivating effective leaders and citizens.”

Passion for Education Between the building of Denison and COTC, The Ohio State University at Newark became a member of the Licking County community in 1957. And the founding of the branch was no accident, as residents have made clear how much they care about students and the growth of education throughout the county. The first campus building was constructed in 1966, the result of more than $1 million pledged by 7,000 Licking County residents; proof that OSU made the right decision by expanding a branch to Newark.

Being surrounded by a beautiful, flourishing community with connected and passionate residents gives students a well-rounded life outside of the classroom, too. “The quality of life in Licking County is high; we have beautiful, small communities, each with its own character where neighbors really do still know and look out for each other,” says Suzanne.
