myuniquegahannastory Barbara Foley Drobnick Owner, Honey Grove Botanicals Why did you select Gahanna to open your business? I moved to Gahanna in 1994. We felt Gahanna would be a great place to raise our young family. Gahanna was very receptive to our business ideas, and less than a year after moving here, our little cottage business was off to a great start. What are some of the ways in which you identify with the Gahanna community? I am proud to share with the world that Gahanna, my hometown, is reputed as the Herb Capital of Ohio. Gahanna has really grown since I moved here, but maintains plenty of green spaces, and the hometown feel. There is a strong sense of pride and community, and many like me chose Gahanna for the great schools and friendly, helpful people here. We’ve grown enough that it’s great to be able to do and find much of what we need here or very nearby. What is one thing about Gahanna that other residents inside (and outside) of Columbus do not realize? That Gahanna was named “the Herb Capital of Ohio,” and achieving that title was spearheaded decades ago by one Bunnie Geroux. In one or two sentences, please describe your very first experience in Gahanna. My very first experience in Gahanna was actually in the late 70’s when a coworker invited me to meet her for pizza at Massey’s. I came into Gahanna via Hamilton Road, which at the time was one lane in and one lane out, and there were cattails along the sides of the road. Wow! Have we grown!

Herb‘n Restaurant Week

myuniquegahannastory Shana and Jay Sokol Owners, Buckeye Candy Company What are some of the ways in which you identify with the Gahanna community? We believe in the power and strength of community, which is a hallmark of Gahanna. Why did you select Gahanna to open your business? We wanted to open our family-owned business in a family-focused community. Gahanna has great tradition of successful long-term “mom & pop” restaurants, stores and more. We hope to keep that going.

101 Beer Kitchen

Gahanna’s Herb’n Restaurant Week celebrates the City’s status as the Herb Capital of Ohio. Traditionally held during the second week of May (“Herb Week” in Gahanna), the event challenges local chefs to tap their creativity, creating unique herb-inspired specialty menu items available to diners only during that week. The celebration promises flavorful dishes inspired by basil, chives, sage and other herbs. During Herb’n Restaurant Week, participating chefs at sig-

nature Gahanna restaurants will tempt your palate with menu items like spicy cilantro pesto, thyme and garlic roasted chicken or tomato basil pasta. The line isn’t drawn at just dinner features, as herbs are infused into appetizers, creative cocktails and even desserts. Enjoy tastes you won’t find anywhere else, such as Venetian Wine Cake (made with fresh rosemary) or lavender pastries.

In your opinion, what is the best kept secret within the Gahanna community? The great locally owned restaurants like Gahanna Grill, Lola & Giuseppe’s, Gahanna Pizza Plus, Barrel and Boar, and so many more that serve amazing food at reasonable prices.

The Nafzger-Miller house, home to the Herb Center, is listed in the National Register of Historical Places. Take a DIY class, learn about Pollinators, go on an Herb Walk and more!

What would people be surprised to know about you? We chose to move to Columbus from Los Angeles voluntarily during the middle of winter 2017.

Did you know that Gahanna is a pollinator city? This means increased biodiversity within our natural spaces and that the surrounding environments are healthier, overall. The city spends less money on maintenance activities by adding in larger pollinator-friendly habitats such as “no mow” areas. Here are some areas in Gahanna where you can experience pollinatorfriendly habitats: • Ohio Herb Center Gardens • Friendship Park • Gahanna Woods • Hannah Park Want to learn more, call or visit the Ohio Herb Center (614/642-HERB) for resources and experts!

Herbal Cocktail Trail

myuniquegahannastory Micael Habte Owner, Upper Cup Coffee In Gahanna, I get the small town feel that I often find myself nostalgic for. I grew up in Columbus. I remember going to Big Bear for groceries, Resch’s Bakery for donuts and Katzinger’s Deli for sandwiches. Over the years, Columbus has grown so much and it started to lose its small-town feel. When I decided to expand my company, I remembered these great small businesses that helped shaped my life and I wanted to emulate it. I found that in Gahanna.

A night out in Gahanna isn’t simply a night out. It’s an opportunity to savor inventive, inspiring and delicious herb-infused cocktails (and cuisine) along Gahanna’s popular Herbal Cocktail Trail … in the Herb Capital of Ohio. Gather your friends and chart your own adventure – picking up Herbal Cocktail Trail passports at any of the participating signature restaurants, distilleries and pubs. Start with a Happy Hour or a patio dinner, an after-concert date or even a lunch with the girls – and set your own pace. Whether your goal is to earn stamps quickly in your Trail passport to redeem it for the awesome T-shirt (6 passport stamps earns the prize) – or to slowly enjoy the libations over time – no two Herbal Cocktail Trail experiences are the same. Gahanna wasn’t built for a one-size-fits-all adventure; it’s a destination to piece together your own unique adventure.

Barrel & Boar

Enjoy a perfect first-date at Wyandotte Winery, complete with winery tour on a Saturday or live music on Friday evenings. Meet up with friends to watch the big game, enjoy some great barbeque and savor the flavors of the Barrel & Boar’s herbal cocktail. Indulge in the delicious seasonal menu offerings at 101 Beer Kitchen Gahanna with the family – treating the little ones to a great made-from-scratch kids’ meal, and the adults to 101BK’s refreshing herb-infused drink. The Herbal Cocktail Trail isn’t just about the delicious, herbal signature drinks, although it’s difficult not to boast about the thought and care that goes into each exciting, new drink. The Trail is about the moments in-between the sips.

I am an avid cyclist and I belong to several cycling clubs. And I’m proud to say that I’ve biked the Little Miami Bike Trail with a couple of friends. There are so many beautiful parks and trails in Gahanna. There are gardens, ponds and creeks, paved bike trails, soccer fields and just about any outdoor activity you can imagine. There’s a park for it in Gahanna! Micael’s Best Kept Secret in Gahanna Golden Delight Bakery. Hands-down the best cake I’ve ever had. Micael’s first Gahanna experience I was at the annual Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival with my then girlfriend (now wife) and I was amazed that after a 15-minute drive from downtown Columbus, I was transported to such a diverse place with great food and music but still had a small community feel.

Blues, Brews & a Little Jazz, too myuniquegahannastory Brian Peters of Deuce n’ a Quarter When I first attended Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival (CBJF), I didn’t play music, sing or anything. It was a tradition – my son and I would go to CBJF for Father’s Day. After a few years of going with my son, I met a few people, picked up a harmonica one day and landed in the Shaun Booker Band. I have four kids and only one is left in the house. I have a 16-year-old who still wants to go to CBJF with me and hang out, which means a lot to me. My story starts at CBJF. To have the opportunity to play on the stage where I used to be a spectator is amazing for me. I also love the festival’s variety. They have everything, not just blues music. I love to check out different genres and artists. The food and shops are really good too!

myuniquegahannastory Elan Leonard Sells 3rd Grade, Jefferson Elementary What’s your favorite thing to do in Gahanna? Find Gahanna Rocks, explore down by the creek and look for cool things by the shore. You can even play in the water when it’s hot out. What’s your favorite place to visit in Gahanna? Creekside is my favorite spot but I love the river too (Big Walnut) because we can go kayaking when it is warm! Why do you like living here? The parks are great! We have a garden at Friendship Park during the summer and you can play in the water there too. One time my Mom even took me to do yoga by Creekside. There is always something to do. If you were going to invite other kids to visit Gahanna – what would you tell them? Why would they like it? You’ll love Gahanna because everyone here is kind. There is a lot to do. The parks are great, the Blues & Jazz Festival is great and there are so many good places to eat.

What are some of the ways in which you identify with the Gahanna community? I identify the Gahanna community as the Herb Capital of Ohio. Also, a great place to raise a family or to be an empty nester.

Why did you select Gahanna to open your business? Oddly enough, I had all but given up hope of finding a spot that was in a good location, within budget, and not far from where I was living. Luckily my landlord understands that I am a small business and was more than accommodating in helping me get started back up again. What would people be surprised to know about you? Most people would be surprised that I lived on a farm in Wisconsin near Green Bay for 4 years raising cows, pigs, chickens, and even had a goat and a peacock. In your opinion, what is the best kept secret within the Gahanna community? Me and the many small locally owned businesses. Also, the Ohio Herb Center. When relocating here we were impressed with the schools, parks, closeness to the airport and highways.

Groups, Gatherings & Get -Togethers : Gahanna -Style

myuniquegahannastory Jim Morris Owner, The Mug & Brush Barber Shop What are some of the ways in which you identify with the Gahanna community? Gahanna has always felt, to me, like a close-knit, unique neighbor to Columbus. I’m from a small town in east of Columbus and I identify with that mindset. I value neighbors, community activities, and a small-town vibe with a big heart.

open your business? My wife, Amanda, and I have been visiting Gahanna for almost a decade. We lived in the Short North prior to moving out here and were always impressed by the downtown area; there is a lot of opportunity for small business success. The area is very charming with so much potential. And the people are amazing; such a diverse group of fun people with great stories to tell. What is one thing about Gahanna that other residents inside (and outside) of Columbus do not realize? I don’t think people realize what amazing events are thrown here in Gahanna.
