The founding of Gahanna took place in 1849, when John Clark named the 800acre plot given to him by his father.
The name “Gahanna” is said to have come from the Wyandot tribe that once lived in the area, with a loose translation of “where three creeks meet” referring to the creeks that feed into Big Walnut Creek.
Remnants of Gahanna’s rich history can be seen all over the city and especially at its preserved historical sights.

The Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival
Celebrating 25 years
For 25 years, music lovers have been flocking to Gahanna on Father’s Day weekend for the highly anticipated Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival®.
Started in 1999 as a small half-day event commemorating the opening of Gahanna’s Creekside Park, the festival now draws more than 25,000 visitors to the Creekside District and Park each year.
People from across the state, Midwest and beyond travel to the heart of the Gahanna for the local and nationally renowned entertainment that has become synonymous with this signature event over the past 25 years.
The festival offers a wide range of music including its namesake blues and jazz, as well as soul, bluegrass, funk, rock, and so much more. The featured performers play on one of three different stages: Jazz Stage, Blues Stage and Community Stage.
The Jazz and Blues stages primarily feature a combination of local, regional and national performers while the Community Stage highlights some of the amazing talent found right here in central Ohio.
Over the years, some big names have come to the festival including awardwinning blues artist Zac Harmon and Lil’ Jimmy Reed who performed with B.B. King. In 2024, visitors will hear from Blues Hall of Fame inductees Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials and jazz favorites, the Huntertones.
While enjoying the music, guests can dive into dishes from a variety of food stands and local restaurants, from Donna’s Delicious Dozen to Schmidt’s Sausage Haus, to Island Noodles’ wok-fired soba noodles.
Outside of the food vendors, festival-goers can visit other local retail vendors for artisan goods as well as locally brewed drinks. All alcoholic drinks are provided by Gahanna-based breweries and distilleries and will include cocktail mixers from Gahanna’s own Simple Times Mixers.
Artists create murals on-site during the festival each year to fill the space with new visual art to admire. All the work is done in partnership with the Gahanna Area Arts Council and is showcased in the Open Air Art Studio, a staple of the festival since 2022.
The kid-friendly Music Discovery Area, offers fun ways for children to learn more about music on Saturday and Sunday of the festival. The space reaches beyond the festival grounds, so visitors and passersby can also learn and play.
Aside from the Gahanna Area Arts Council, the festival partners with central Ohio organizations such as the Columbus Blues Alliance and the Jazz Arts Group of Columbus, which both help bring talent to the festival.
