Westerville Parks & Recreation Continues Tradition of Excellence with Fifth National Gold Medal

The National Recreation & Parks Association (NRPA) Congress’ recognition of Westerville Parks and Recreation as a national Gold Medal winner in September made the City the first in the country to win the award four times consecutively since 1996. It was the City’s fifth time to receive the national gold medal since the establishment of the award. “Westerville’s excellent parks and recreation programming is a core www.westervillemagazine.com

DHL Supply Chain’s North American HQ Opening is a Major Milestone for Westar Place Development

DHL Supply Chain is expected to open its new 145,000 square-foot North American Regional Office in Westar Place this fall. Fittingly, the facility, which will house the nation’s leader in contract logistics came together in just 16 months from groundbreaking to move-in. “We’re intentional about ensuring our permitting process meets both the needs of the City and the business community, it helps Westerville compete on a global level,” said Jason Bechtold, Economic Development Director for the City. “When businesses like DHL choose Westerville and thrive here, the whole community wins.” The headquarters represents a $20 million investment and DHL’s continued commitment to the Westerville community. “The op-

portunity to keep our regional office in Westerville and build a new building here – and our decision to act on that opportunity – all came together rather quickly,” said Scott Sureddin, CEO, DHL Supply Chain, North America. “The project would not have happened without the involvement and generous support of key partners, especially the City of Westerville and the Delaware County Finance Authority. They confirmed our decision to stay ‘planted here’ in Westerville and in Delaware County.” The new building will accommodate up to 800 employees and the company's planned growth for the next 10 years. As DHL Supply Chain opens its doors, the City will also celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the Westar area.

Police/Court Facility Decision Goes to Voters On Tuesday, Nov. 5, Westerville voters will decide a number of important issues. Among them is whether or not to proceed with the plan to construct a new police/ court facility at 229 Huber Village Blvd. The City is asking voters to consider financing the $15 million in construction costs through a 20-year bond levy proposed at .96 mills. For every $100,000 in property value, the estimated monthly cost would be $2.80 beginning 2021. “After construction, this space would meet our current needs and, notably, allow the Westerville Division of Police

(WPD) to scale to meet the growing needs of our community for years to come,” says WPD Chief Charles Chandler. WPD has been in its current headquarters at 29 S. State St. for more than 30 years. During this time the building’s facilities have aged considerably and the Division's space needs surpassed the building's capacity about 15 years ago. The bond levy-funded construction costs would cover important operational and safety improvements for the new building, which was purchased for $2.1 million in 2018 (from its original asking price of more than $2.5 million). Planned updates include the creation of a dedicated court and community meeting space and a modern firearms training space that can be used daily. If the plan is approved, City staff at 64 E. Walnut St. would eventually move into the old WPD headquarters, which would be renovated. The Division would retain a small "mini-post" in Uptown within City Hall. Help Protect Road Warriors, Neighbors During Leaf Collection A few weeks into the 2019 leaf collection program featuring a new method (learn more at www.westerville. org/leafcollection), the Westerville Public Service Department's Road Warriors are reminding residents to follow a few simple rules to help keep City crews, equipment and neighbors safe. • Ensure leaf piles are free of large sticks, twigs and any trash or debris that could cause damage to the leaf collection equipment and injuries to machine operators. • The night before the start of your scheduled collection, rake all leaves to the tree lawn (between the sidewalk and the street), but not in the street. Leaves in the street can cause unsafe driving conditions and clog stormwater drains • Avoid parking vehicles in front of leaves. Lastly, the City thanks residents for their continued patience as Road Warriors work diligently to provide excellent customer service. “The leaves have dropped later over the last few years, which creates a challenge for the program as it inevitably www.westervillemagazine.com

overlaps with snow-clearing needs. We use many of the same vehicles for both programs, retrofitting them with the appropriate equipment for each need,” said Westerville Public Service Director Kevin Weaver. “Snow clearing is a priority from a safety standpoint, so once we convert trucks to snow-mode, our leaf clearing program naturally slows down.” Westerville collected 6,704 cubic yards of leaves in 2018, a 10-year high. City Adds Activities, Special Guests to Tree Lighting Ceremony Westerville Parks and Recreation is adding more winter wonder to the annual holiday tree lighting ceremony at City Hall (21 S. State St.) on Friday, Dec. 6. New this year is the addition of a small ice skating rink as part of the festivities. Ice skates are needed to participate and will be available to rent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ice skating is a treasured pastime for many residents and we thought it would be the perfect activity to complement this community event as long as the weather holds out for us,â&#x20AC;? said Westerville Parks and Recreation Director Randy Auler. He says rain could potentially interfere with plans for ice skating. Any event adjustments for weather will be shared on the City's social media accounts (www.facebook.com/cityofwesterville and www. twitter.com/tellwesterville). Elsa, Anna and Olaf from Disney's Frozen, as well as the Grinch and Rudolph are expected to make guest appearances this year. Protect Yourself from Porch Pirates During Holidays

The Westerville Division of Police (WPD) is encouraging residents to be vigilant to prevent thefts this holiday season. Whereas the archnemesis of the holidays is traditionally been thought to be a green creature from Whoville with a penchant for slinking down chimneys, WPD Chief Charles Chandler says real Grinches are more opportunists than cave-dwelling plotters. “More people are turning to online shopping as we draw nearer to the holidays. This means an influx of valuables simply sitting on doorsteps for hours at a time,” Chief Chandler says. “Thieves simply need to cruise through a neighborhood and have their pick.” Chief Chandler suggests taking the following precautions to avoid becoming a victim of theft: • Have items sent to a trusted, secure location (think ship-to-store options, an at-home neighbor or relative.) • Make an agreement with a trusted neighbor (one who is home when you’re not) to collect items delivered as they see them. • Utilize a security/video doorbell system. (These can be effective deterrents and, if cameras are in use, help WPD track down suspects.) • Always lock home and vehicle doors. While we hold out hope that the hearts of every Grinch would grow three times during the holidays, Chief Chandler says the steps above are simple ways to ensure you have a safe and happy holiday season. Uptown Improvements Pause So People Can Shop Small Beginning Nov. 15, the sounds of jackhammers and construction crews will be replaced by the sounds of the bustling holiday season in Uptown Westerville. Work was originally scheduled to pause beginning Nov. 1. This date was pushed back due to the CNN/New York Times Democratic Debate at Otterbein University on Oct. 15. With the Uptown Improvements and Columbia Gas projects on pause, residents are encouraged to head to State Street this Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30. A nationwide movement, Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to patronize local businesses during the holiday shopping season. Life of Pie

Just Pies owner thrives in Westerville’s welcoming community

or most of his life, Pete Sterk has served food that makes people happy. His foray into the food industry began in 1974 when he was 16, running his mom’s pizza shop, Papa Jo’s Pizza, in Vermilion. Then, in 1977, she founded the restaurant Sterk’s Wakeman House in Wakeman, Ohio. She was having trouble finding the time and space to make pies to sell at the restaurant when Sterk volunteered to make pies out of the pizza oven before the pizza shop opened every day. So, Sterk started creating dessert pies alongside the usual pizza pies. Being in the food industry near Put-in-Bay, a tourist area, was difficult. However, he quickly began seeing repeat customers each season. Visitors from central Ohio kept telling him the same thing. “They said, ‘Why don’t you come down here? We need something down here,’” says Sterk. Sterk searched around Columbus for the perfect location for his new pie shop, Just Pies, before settling on Worthington in 1995. The small storefront wasn’t a secret for long, and soon Sterk found affiliates from the Food Network in his shop in 2003. In the first season of The Best Of, Just Pies is featured alongside four other dessert shops. Then, in 2004, Oprah featured Just Pies as one of her favorite shops in the country. From there, business took off. “You didn’t have time to think about it; you just had to go with it. The phones were going crazy, trying to ship them across the country,” says Sterk. “It was nuts.”

To keep up with demand, Sterk opened another Just Pies in Westerville in 2004. And while getting featured on two major shows in such a short time may go to some people’s heads, Sterk admits he doesn’t think much about it. He just focuses on what he does best: making pie. While the name Just Pies implies a level of specificity, Sterk makes all types of pie. Sure, you can get your pecan, cherry and rhubarb pies, but you can also find pecan chocolate chip, strawberry cream cheese, and even pot pies like turkey and chicken. Sterk enjoys the creativity of pie making and is always trying new things. “What I tease about is that you can make a pie out of everything,” he says. “You can mix things up, you can do whatever you want, and just say, ‘Boy, is that bad,’ or, ‘Boy, that’s good.’”

Sterk’s personal favorite is his cherry pie (find the recipe on page 29), and his apple crumb and pecan remain customer favorites. He admits not everything he creates is a winner, but the mellow, gently speaking chef often turns out something wonderful. “I had a key lime pie and that tastes pretty good, so I said, ‘Let’s put (on) some cream cheese,” he says, “and I said, ‘That’s pretty doggone good.’” Sterk estimates that the shop makes 42 flavors of pie – though not all at once. Fans of Just Pies should be sure to come back year round to check out the rotating seasonal offerings. However, it seems Westerville residents already got that memo.

“Just like the chicken pot pies we started; ‘Why don’t you try to make those?’ I don’t know, I can try it. Then I got those and they said, ‘You got any beef?’ and I said sure,” he says. “You just give them what they want and they’ll support you. They know I make good stuff.” He feels supported by the Westerville community year-round, whereas in Vermilion his sales depended on the season. Plus, his business has grown and changed during his time in central Ohio – something he felt wasn’t as well received in northern Ohio. “Down here, you have more growth and opportunity for growth,” Sterk says. “You can do whatever you want down here and people will accept you.” In 2016, Sterk found himself behind cameras once again, and appeared in the first season of the Cooking Channel’s Sugar Showdown, where he was tasked with creating an amusement park pie. However, Sterk doesn’t talk much about his televised past; instead, he looks to the future. “I just take it in and keep on going,” Sterk says. “My grandma says things happen for a reason.” He’s looking forward to expanding his pot pie line, and is playing with the idea of shepherd’s pie or barbecue pork pot pie. No matter what Sterk comes up with, Just Pies fans can expect something delicious. “What I try to do is be a little bit different,” says Sterk. “It might not work, but I might as well try it and see what happens.” Running a business – no matter the kind – is hard work. But Sterk says Westerville is supportive and friendly. Plus, when you’re serving them locally made pie, people are bound to be happy. “There’s hardly a person that comes in that shop with a frown on their face,” Sterk says. “They want pie and they’re happy. Historical Holidays at the Hanby Christmas at the Hanby House with its longtime patrons and volunteers

very year during the holiday season Westerville residents make their way to Hanby House, where fun events and cozy decorations dawn the old homestead. With open houses, period-appropriate clothing and lively volunteers, the home features two Christmas-themed events annually. It’s also a time for the Hanby House to celebrate its connection to a classic Christmas tune. Caroling Connection When Benjamin Hanby began studying at Otterbein University in the mid-1800s, his father, Bishop William Hanby, moved the entire family to Westerville so his other children could attend the then-new college. Thus, the Hanby House was born. The home holds many stories, but one particular tale the Hanby House tells around the holiday season centers around its connection to one of the oldest secular Christmas songs, Up on the Housetop. After graduating from Otterbein, moving to New Paris and opening a singing school, Benjamin Hanby wrote the Santa Claus tune. “Most people know that song, but I feel every year you hear it less and less because

Picture and Old-Fashion Christmas is set for Saturday, Nov. 23 from noon-4 p.m. of more new music,” says Pam Allen, site manager for Hanby House. “We promote it any time we can, … we’re trying to keep it alive and well.” Between vintage sheet music of Up on the Housetop, a live band at its Christmas Open House that plays the song and more, Allen and her team make sure every Hanby House Christmas features that classic song. “When people try to connect to historical activities and people, a lot of it is very far removed from us,” says Allen, “but Christmas is something we still celebrate today and what our ancestors celebrated so we have that immediate connection.”

The Christmas Open Houses are set for Tuesday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 7 at various times. Picture an Old-Fashioned Christmas For the past seven years, the Hanby House hosts its Picture an Old-Fashion Christmas where people can come and dress up in Civil War-era clothing and take their photo in the historic house. But for Westerville resident and business owner Daniel Wade, the event isn’t just a festive activity, but a tradition. While driving from his restaurant, Cardone’s Restaurant & Bar, Wade noticed a sign promoting the first-ever Picture an Old-Fashion Christmas. Instantly, he had the perfect idea for a Christmas gift to his www.westervillemagazine.com

wife, then-girlfriend. Wade rushed home, picked up their new puppy and went back to Hanby House for an old-timey photoshoot with their pup. “Every year we got a new animal, got engaged or married, so it’s been pretty neat for us because we’ve documented our lives through the pictures,” Wade says. In the photos, Wade and his wife sport matching 1860s attire and even their dogs fit the part. Allen adds that it’s also an opportunity for some people to learn about their family history. “It’s a different take on a Christmas event,” Allen says. “For those curious about what their ancestors might have worn, this gives them a chance to understand that history.” For Wade, the event is so much more than taking a unique picture – his favorite part is actually chatting with the volunteers who get the costumes ready for the photo shoot. “They’ve been professional in their industry, so they’ve worked in the theater department and they know how to dress people and they know what fits, and they’re back there laughing and telling jokes,” Wade says. “More than just the pictures, it’s probably the people there who are super nice and friendly and make you want to come back.” Christmas Open House For years, the Hanby House opens its doors in December to allow curious patrons to see the holiday-decorated rooms, listen to a live quartet and learn more about its story-filled walls. The event would not be possible without volunteers, and one of the most passionate helpers is 95-year-old Millie Becker. A longtime Westerville resident, Becker started volunteering in the early 1980s, in between teaching for Westerville City Schools, with her husband, Forrest. “We just thoroughly enjoyed doing it and it’s just something that became a part of our lives,” says Becker. Though her husband has since passed, Becker still gives her time to the Hanby House, especially during the Christmas Open House. Becker took on many roles through the years with volunteering and says she’s enjoyed it all, she also encourages others to lend a helping hand. “Not only do you learn from volunteering, ... but you get to see a lot of excitement and things (on display) there that are so different,” she says. “I just enjoy (volunteering) and this is the only place I’ve ever had the opportunity to do it, so it’s very special for me.” Lydia Freudenberg is an associate editor. ho says you can’t double dip? This Westerville house was featured in Westerville Magazine in 2016 for its fabulous porch – this time, the Joe and Angie Abood are back and busy remodeling again. A clean and modern design was exactly what the Aboods wanted when remodeling their master bathroom. The Aboods moved into their Westerville home 10 years ago and slowly have begun renovating with three major renovations in the last five years. The Cleary Company has worked with the Aboods to add a back patio and helped bring more light into their basement. With two projects under their belt, it was an easy decision to add on another renovation that would help freshen up the space. “This was really Angie’s project,” says Joe. “She really had an idea in mind for what she wanted and we just went with it.” “I wanted it to be a minimalist design,” says Angie. “I like greys and whites, natural looking materials and a space we could put lots of plants.” One of the bathroom changes the Aboods both agreed on was removing the www.westervillemagazine.com

The expanded shower and porcelain tile floors model similar trends homeowners and designers are moving toward. “Homeowners are really going for this less is more sort of style,” says April Howe, marketing coordinator for The Cleary Company. “A lot of our clients want simpler lines, clean and bright tile and the multiple shower heads. So much of this design resembles what others are seeking out.” The standing shower opens with giant glass doors and features multiple showerheads, including a large waterfall and a hand-help shower rail. The his-and-hers quartz sinks sit atop wood cabinets, which offers more than enough room for towels, toiletries and more. Along with meeting the design specifics the Aboods were looking for, the couple had to make sure the remodel made sense for their family. It was key that whatever materials they chose were easy for their two young children to use, along with being easy to clean. The family knew they could make repairs to fix what was falling apart, or, they could create something new, different and better overall. The house, built in 2002, was due

for an upgrade that The Cleary Company was more than happy to help with. “Coming up with the best overall design is our goal,” says Howe, “Everyone works together to ensure everything is done with the client’s vision in mind. There’s lots of communication along the way to make sure that happens.”

‘Tis the Season to Drink Coffee Westerville baristas give their insight on the busy holiday season

he holidays in Westerville are busy – that much is clear. Between shopping, meal prepping and party planning, it takes a lot of work to make the season’s tidings full of comfort and joy. What gets us through the blustery days? Caffeine. Forbes reports that just as U.S. alcohol intake doubles during the holidays, coffee industry profits also increase from November to January. Thanks to our shining Barista’s, aproned and ready to brew, we can happily sip our seasonal favorites. Whether we’re grabbing a cup to go (that Christmas sale ends at 6 p.m.) or settling in for a well-deserved break after entertaining visiting relatives, our baristas work through the holidays with smiles, cheer, and lots and lots of coffee.

Pete Sterk’s Favorite Cherry Pie • 4 cups fresh or frozen tart cherries • 1 to 1 ½ cups granulated sugar • 4 tbsp. cornstarch • 1⁄8 tbsp. almond extract (optional) • Your favorite pie crust or pie dough recipe for 2 crusts • 1 ½ tbsp. butter, to dot • 1 tbsp. granulated sugar, to sprinkle Place cherries in medium size saucepan and place over low/medium heat. Cover. After the cherries lose considerable juice, which may take a few minutes, remove from heat. In a small bowl, mix the sugar and cornstarch. Pour this mixture into the hot cherries and mix well. Add the almond extract, if desired, and mix. Return the mixture to the stove and cook over low heat until thickened, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and let cool. If the filling is too thick, add a little water; too thin, add a little cornstarch. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Use your favorite pie dough recipe and prepare your crust. Divide in half and roll out each piece large enough to fit into an eight- or nine-inch pan. Pour cooled cherry mixture into the crust. Dot with butter. Moisten edge of bottom crust and place top crust on top. Flute the edge of the pie, then make a slit in the middle of the crust for steam to escape. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake for about 50 minutes. Remove from the oven and place on a rack to cool. Serve and enjoy.
