Dear Hamilton, I’m new to Chattanooga and am an avid parkgoer. While I’ve been to many of the great parks here in the city, I’m eager to keep exploring – even if it means a decent drive. I’d especially love to learn more about state parks. Are there any nearby, and what can you tell me about their history? Sincerely, Ready to Road Trip Dear Ready to Road Trip, If you’re looking for state parks, you’re in the right place! Tennessee is home to 57 state parks, and it’s no surprise that the Chattanooga area and its many scenic views of lakes, mountains, and waterfalls are included in this lineup. There are five 18 |

state parks located within an hour’s drive of Chattanooga, and three are right here in Hamilton County – no road trip necessary! The oldest of these is Harrison Bay State Park. When it was established in 1937, it not only became the first state park in Hamilton County, but the first ever state park in Tennessee! It was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a government work relief program created during the Great Depression to supply jobs through environmental improvement projects. Their efforts resulted in the 1,200-acre park that visitors enjoy today. Harrison Bay State Park features 40 miles of shoreline along Chickamauga Lake plus amenities that day-use visitors and campers alike enjoy such as a walking

path, golf course, marina, and more. Booker T. Washington State Park became Hamilton County’s second state park a year later as the CCC continued its work. Also situated along Chickamauga Lake, the park was originally established as an African American state recreational center and was named in honor of famous leader and educator Booker T. Washington. After a 1950 dedication that debuted recreational infrastructure, park visitation soared from 16,000 annual visitors to 85,000 by 1960. Today, visitors continue to enjoy recreation across its 353 acres, which now include a swimming pool, picnic area, playground, and six-mile singletrack trail for mountain bikers. Though Justin P. dreds of miles across Tennessee, it ends up right in our backyard. Winding its way through the ridges and gorges of the Cumberland Plateau, the trail was designated a State Scenic Trail in 1971, and in 1998, became Tennessee’s 53rd state park. At an impressive 33,500 acres, the Cumberland Trail is Tennessee’s largest state park. It is also the only linear state park, running vertically across Tennessee through 11 counties, including our very own Hamilton County. While it’s still a work in progress, once complete, the trail will stretch 300 miles from Cumberland Gap at the Kentucky border to the nearby Tennessee River Gorge. To hike a segment of the Cumberland Trail, pay a visit to Signal Mountain and enjoy front-row seats to views of our city’s stunning scenery. Half an hour away is Red Clay State Historic Park, a site that commemorates and celebrates the Cherokee Nation. Red

Clay was the last seat of the Cherokee government before the 1838 enforcement of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. From 1832 to 1837, the Cherokee Nation held 11 general councils at Red Clay. Here, they learned that they had lost their land and would be forced westward on the Trail of Tears. Nearly 150 years later, the Cherokee would meet once again at Red Clay during the Cherokee Council Reunion. Today, Red Clay is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a certified site and interpretive center on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. To learn more about this land’s important history during your visit, be sure to check out the park’s museum and historic replicas. Last, but certainly not least, is the Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park, situated an hour east of Chattanooga. Named after the two rivers that run through it, the park is a hot spot

for outdoor recreation. Whitewater rafting has drawn visitors to the park since 1977 and garnered international acclaim, thanks to the Ocoee River’s rushing rapids. Most notably, the Ocoee hosted the 1996 Olympics Whitewater Competition and made history as the only in-river venue the event has used to date. To create a world class course, a section of the riverbed was engineered to produce powerful rapids worthy of this elite competition – rapids you can still raft today, if you dare. Between these five state parks and an abundance of other scenic and historic parks in and around our city, you’ll have plenty to explore! Hope this helps! Compensating Carbon Sequestration L A N DY I E L D LandYield is paving the way for landowners to benefit from conserving forested land and its carbon stores. “Valuing carbon sequestration and storage in forests is a way for us to value what forests can provide us beyond traditional timber products,” says founder Josh Fain. “By paying private landowners to defer commercial harvesting, we can help increase carbon stores while strengthening the range of public goods forests deliver like biodiversity, water quality, wildlife habitat, and soil health.”

WHY IT’S A COMPANY TO WATCH: LandYield has opened up the carbon market to a significant constituent. “Up until now, these projects required too much upfront capital to make it worthwhile for landowners with less than 5,000 acres,” explains Fain. With 39% of the over 800 million acres of forested land in the United States owned by individuals and families with no more than a few hundred acres, a vast majority of owners can now benefit, thanks to LandYield. The company and its key collaborator Finite Carbon utilize high-resolution satellite imagery and long-term Forest Service plots to provide instant carbon value quotes to landowners at no cost. LandYield’s competitive compensation and position as the only major project developer of its kind based in the Southeast sets the company up for continued success.

2023 IN REVIEW: After years of technological and financial innovation and work on forest carbon projects, Fain publicly launched LandYield in August – an announcement covered in the Wall Street Journal. LandYield delivered payment to its first cohort of landowners, and that group has only continued to grow. Today, LandYield has 350 sites in its platform, representing over 80,000 acres across the Southeast. OUTLOOK FOR 2024: Currently serving 13 states in the South, LandYield is looking to expand its services to landowners in the Northwest, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest by the year’s end. “Our main goal for the year is just continuing to grow our business, getting more landowners paid, and protecting more acres of forestland,” says Fain.

When sustainable farm owners Marshall and Katherine Teague began boarding dogs for their friends in an old kennel on their property 10 years ago, it would turn out to be the beginnings of a thriving dog company. Eden Thistle Dog Co. prioritizes the well-being of canine companions through daycare and boarding services, and a jerky treats product line. WHY IT’S A COMPANY TO WATCH: The

daycare and boarding program features an expansive outdoor space where dogs can enjoy 26 |

a free range, natural setting. “The philosophy behind our dog company mirrored our farming company,” explains Marshall Teague. “We wanted to board dogs in a way that reflected their nature, so we turn dogs out in play groups into our wooded pasture and grass pasture throughout the day.” The production of the jerky treats reflects a similar mindset rooted in nature. Eden Thistle Dog Co.’s treats are made with only two ingredients – sweet potato and a pasture-raised protein – and are free of chemicals, preservatives, and other additives. The Teagues make each and every treat themselves, a rare practice in the dog treat industry. 2023 IN REVIEW: Eden Thistle Dog Co. added new wholesale stores on

the West Coast for its jerky treats and did prep work for future flavor launches. Teague says that the best addition to their company in 2023 was a shuttle for the daycare program, named the Dog Adventure Van. Equipped with wood walls and floors and a bunkbed system, the van picks up dogs from their houses in the morning to attend daycare and drops them back off again in the evening – an added convenience for busy pet parents.

OUTLOOK FOR 2024: This year, Eden Thistle Co. has its eyes on the expansion of both its property and products. Teague shares plans to expand fields and add new buildings to the daycare and boarding program. Plus, a new flavor is in the works for the company’s jerky treats line.

Delivering Dairy Alternatives OTHER MILK When Liz Bounds couldn’t find the alternative milk she was looking for, she decided to make it herself. “I wanted a locally-sourced, additive-free, truly sustainable plant-based milk to exist – I searched high and low and couldn’t find one,” she shares. As a result, Bounds created Other Milk, a pecan-based milk she emphasizes is for everyone, from customers with a dairy-free diet to those wanting to make sustainable swaps. WHY IT’S A COMPANY TO WATCH: Other Milk

is the only company of its kind, raising the bar for alternative milk by setting the highest standards for quality and sustainability. Large-scale plantbased milk brand operations often involve shipping emissions and impact water supply. In comparison, Other Milk is markedly low impact. To minimize waste in the production and distribution process, it operates under a unique business model inspired by traditional milkman-style delivery. Other Milk packages and delivers its milk in glass bottles, which can be returned, cleaned, and sanitized for reuse in the next batch via its return program. Its emphasis on locality also sets Other Milk apart, using native pecans sourced from a farm in South Georgia. “My focus is to source as locally as possible, so that I can further the community that Other Milk is located in, as well as lowering my impact on the planet,” notes Bounds. 2023 IN REVIEW: Other Milk moved into a new

commissary kitchen and became a vendor at the Main Street Farmers’ Market – the largest foodfocused market in Chattanooga. It also earned its Department of Agriculture certification, making it possible to retail products in establishments including coffee shops and grocery stores. Thanks to this certification, Other Milk entered wholesale partnerships with local businesses in addition to its direct customer sales.

OUTLOOK FOR 2024: Bounds is focused on scaling Other Milk’s reach in 2024 and expanding its product offerings – which currently consist of regular and chocolate pecan milk. She is excited to pursue additional wholesale partnerships and plans to adopt a more robust delivery model while upholding sustainability in all aspects.

Genesis House of Tea DEVEN WALLACE

Genesis House of Tea opened in 2022, a vision brought to life by Redemption to the Nations Church and its pastors, Kevin and Deven Wallace. The tearoom is named after the Wallaces’ adopted daughter, Genesis, and its mission is inspired by the story of her birth mother. In reference to its name, Deven Wallace explains that Genesis House of Tea “is a place of new beginnings for all women and children who find themselves in difficult circumstances.” The tearoom uses a portion of its funds to support and house women experiencing a crisis pregnancy and come alongside birth and adoptive mothers alike in their journey. “Every cup of tea at Genesis House of Tea restores beauty, identity, and dignity to women in our area,” Wallace adds.

The tearoom is open five days a week for lunch along with afterhour event reservations, offering a house-made menu of sweet and savory dishes. “It’s all made to order, and it’s a perfect blend of some well-known British traditions as well as some American favorites,” says Wallace. For the full tearoom experience, she recommends the afternoon tier, and notes that the homemade scones and lobster bisque – a family recipe – are house favorites. From elegant gold décor to the Royal Albert China each dish is served on, Genesis House of Tea wants every guest to feel like royalty. The tea selections also reflect this desire with options like the Royal Wedding tea – the tearoom’s best-selling option – and

a traditional Buckingham Palace blend. Wallace says that indulging in the tradition of afternoon tea and its little luxuries sets aside time “to put away the paper plates and sit down with China just to remind yourself that some moments are worth it!” Since its opening two years ago, Wallace has watched the tearoom become home to meaningful memories. “We’ve seen incredible date nights. We’ve seen beautiful father-daughter and motherdaughter moments. We have listened to laughter, and we have watched tears fall over delicious tea. From the regular meeting of ladies, groups, and Bible studies to business meetings, it’s amazing to see what community can happen around a cup of tea!”

Homefront Tea Room PENELOPE SOULE GAULT

An extension of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM), the Homefront Tea Room opened in 2022 to offer teatime with a historic twist. “The tearoom is decorated to represent a 1940s-era tearoom and focuses on women on the Homefront during the war years,” explains Penelope Soule Gault, communications director for TVRM. The Homefront Tea Room hosts visitors from TVRM’s Grand Junction Depot, where a quaint environment and vintage décor usher patrons into the past as they enjoy a classic high tea among history. Seasonal menus offer up a host of house-made delicacies to enjoy. Gault lists a mouthwatering lineup

of staple items always on offer, including soup with grilled cheese bites, chicken salad, maple brown sugar bacon, egg quiche on a crescent slice with hollandaise sauce, plus clotted cream, lemon curd, and assorted jams served alongside freshly baked scones. She notes, “The appetizer awaiting upon your arrival is one of our favorites: the warm, homemade pimento cheese with crackers is a must-try.” A rotating tea selection lets visitors select from eight teas to pair with their food, while giving returning visitors new flavors to try out each time. Gault shares that the Homefront Tea Room consistently sees visitors reserve the experience for their special occasions, including parties

who travel from out of town just for teatime. “Most recently, three different parties visited from Nashville and Atlanta – all first time visits with us,” she adds. While its decadent dining alone offers plenty to enjoy, the Homefront Tea Room has even more in store. Following teatime, guests get to embark on a 65-minute train ride on the Missionary Ridge Local, which includes a railway turntable demonstration and a tour of TVRM’s restoration shop in East Chattanooga. The scenic trip takes passengers over four bridges and through a historic tunnel for an unforgettable end to a one-of-akind tearoom experience.

Mountain Oaks Manor has been providing event venue services for more than 30 years. isc golf – sometimes called Frisbee golf – is a variation on traditional ball golf where a player attempts to throw a flying disc into a basket, usually on a 9- or 18-hole course. Although not technically a team sport, disc golf boasts an unmatched community experience that has led to a huge boost in popularity in recent years. Here, we chat with local players to learn more about the niche game that’s taking the Scenic City by storm.

The Disc Golf Boom Disc golf has been around for decades, maintaining a modest yet passionate following. Several factors of the game make it attractive to people from all walks of life. Starting the sport is relatively inexpensive, courses are featured in beautiful outdoor settings, and friendships developed on the course are often made for life. While no singular person is accredited with the invention of the game, disc golfers can thank the inventors of the Frisbee for popularizing disc sports throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s. Ed Headrick, an inventor for Wham-O, founded the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) in 1976, which is now the leading governing body for the sport. While disc golf slowly gained traction over the years, the most recent boom can be attributed to a

surprising culprit: the pandemic. With many team sports on hold and athletic facilities shuttered, the open layout of disc golf courses allowed players to continue to gather and play while safely social distancing. Justin Spears, Cleveland local and avid disc golfer, remembers how disc golf provided community during this time. “The game became an actual lifeline as one of the only viable social outlets available,” he says. The statistics reveal this shared experience worldwide. Between 2019 and 2022, the PDGA’s number of active members doubled, increasing from 53,000 to over 130,000. Long-standing players welcome the growth, most having started the sport because a friend or family member once invited them to play a round. “You can’t help but share what you love,” Spears says, “And disc golfers love this game to an almost alarming degree.”

Chattanooga has long been a haven for outdoor sports enthusiasts, and now the Scenic City can add several disc golf courses to its impressive resume. “We have a unique mixture of terrain we can utilize for courses,” says Kyle Burriss, Rossville local and competitive disc golfer. “From tightly-wooded fairways to open ball golf course fairways set up for tournaments, there is a shot for everyone.” Local players are sure to test their mettle, whether overlooking Chickamauga Lake at the Dallas Island Disc Golf Course, avoiding eponymous sinkholes at The Sinks, or exploring Cleveland’s first course at Fletcher Park. Whereas ball golf is often distinguished by vast, open greens, disc golf courses can conform to the organic flow of forested areas and natural landmarks. Open courses provide a clearer shot and an easier target, while heavily forested areas provide plenty of challenging obstacles for the more advanced player. Spears, who helped establish the new 18-hole course at Fletcher Park, is excited about the diversity of courses on offer in the Greater Chattanooga region. “It keeps the game feeling fresh and exciting,” he says. “The relatively mild climate and peerless natural beauty of the area make it possible to enjoy playing throughout the entire year.” This surplus wasn’t always the case. When disc golf was still flying under the mainstream radar, it could be a challenge to find accessible courses nearby. Disc golf courses tend to be cheaper to develop than sports facilities like tennis or basketball courts, but clearing out underbrush, removing trees, and maintaining fairways is no small feat. Having played the sport for over a decade, Burriss can recall the community collaboration required to establish the current disc golf scene. “A lot of courses that predate the 2020 boom of disc golf were designed, funded, and physically cut out by grassroots efforts through local clubs,” he explains. Although the pandemic brought an influx of new players to the course, ongoing efforts between disc golfers, business owners, and community members are necessary to make disc golf accessible and available to all.

A Shot for Everyone Disc golf draws people of all walks of life, offering a fun way to spend time in nature and exercise without breaking the bank. For the casual player, no expensive equipment is necessary – all you need is a flying disc, and most courses are free to play. “You can play your entire life for merely $20 if you wish,” says Cierra Schusterick, disc golf tournament director and competitive player. “I know 3-year-olds that play and I know 83-year-olds that play. Everyone can enjoy it.” For players like Donavan Davis, disc golf offers an economical and time-friendly alternative to a full round of traditional ball golf or other formally organized sports. When a friend introduced him to disc golf, he was immediately hooked. “Because discs are made to have different flight shapes, the learning curve was much easier than putting on a golf green.” He adds, “Witnessing a disc in flight and the sounds of chains when it lands in the basket is very captivating.” And every player, no matter their skill level, talks about chasing the high of landing the perfect shot.

At its core, the sport is simple: a player stands at a tee area and throws a disc towards the designated basket in as few throws as possible. Similar to a golfer’s assortments of irons, there are several disc types that a disc golfer can use depending on the course. Although it can be tempting to buy up several discs to start with, most players advise starting small. “People tend to go for the fastest disc with the coolest names, and most times their arm speed just can’t handle something like that,” Burriss says. To avoid discouragement, he recommends starting with slower speed discs while you learn throwing technique. While there are plenty of online resources and videos that can provide tips for technique, nothing beats the bonding that happens on the course. In Chattanooga, there are casual leagues and groups that hit the course yearround. “Join the local disc golf Facebook group and go to weekly organized events,” Schusterick recommends. “Don’t be afraid to meet new folks and ask for guidance from more experienced players!” As with any sport, the competition can get fierce, but ultimately everyone is out to have a good time and enjoy the fresh air.

Friendly Competition With the growing popularity of the sport, there are opportunities for casual players and competitive players alike. Caitlin Yelvington played disc golf recreationally for years before getting involved competitively. “The growth of the professional side of the sport over the last few years is drawing people in,” she says. “You can now watch live disc golf throughout much of the year, and there are occasional broadcasts through mainstream media outlets.” Local tournaments fill up quickly in the area, and Burriss is hopeful that the increased demand for competitions will usher in a wider range of professional events and players from around the world. “The Scenic City offers so much,” he says, “We would love to get a large-scale tournament here because we think the economic impact would be greater than anticipated.” In addition to casual- and PDGA-sanctioned leagues that host regular events, Chattanoogan disc golfers often gather for charity tournaments to support local causes. With a community that feels more like more like family than friends, there is a unique atmosphere when players gather for tournament days. Yelvington has participated in several tournaments and was the winner of the 2019 U.S. Women’s Disc Golf Championship in the FA3 division. “You can feel the buzz as players arrive to the course,” she says. “Everyone has their own rituals and routines to prepare themselves. Some people dress up in polos and some people sport their finest tie-dye.”

What is the disc golf community like? “This community attracts a very diverse group of backgrounds. Disc golfers are welcoming, willing to take the time to give a tip or two, help look for a lost disc, or return one to you.”

The Disc Thrown Round the World Being part of the disc golf community means having the opportunity to connect with others around the world. “My favorite memories revolve around traveling with my buddies to collect courses all over the States,” says Davis. “We have played in many magical spots.” Currently, there are over 9,000 courses in the United States, featured anywhere from parks and school campuses to campsites and breweries. For Schusterick, disc golf provided an outlet for her competitive spirit but was also a great way to make new friends when moving to a new place. “In every city I’ve lived in, I’ve met some incredible folks through disc golf,” says Schusterick. “No matter where I go, I know I’ll have a friendly community to meet up and throw some discs with.” For anyone looking to get involved in the sport, it’s becoming easier than ever to connect with local leagues. In March of 2023, the PDGA officially reached a quarter of a million enrolled players, marking a huge milestone since Headrick’s humble beginnings in the ‘70s. Whether crossing off destination courses from a bucket list or playing a round in your own backyard, disc golf promises a lifetime of fun. “This sport can be one of the best aspects of life and enjoyable for people of any age,” Schusterick says. “Now get out and throw!”

or Kelsey Keener, homesteading means continuing the legacy of his family’s multigenerational farm. Sequatchie Cove Farm is home to four generations of Keener’s family, and they have been farming together for over 30 years. “Living and working on a multigenerational farm has its challenges, but overall it’s an amazing experience for all of us,” Keener shares. “I have grown up here, and my wife Ashley and I built a house and started our own family here about 12 years ago.” On a 300-acre property with about 100 acres of farmable land, Sequatchie Cove is a diversified farm, yielding pasture-raised eggs and meats as well as organic vegetables and grains. Animals on the farm include chickens, cows, pigs, sheep, and goats, as well as a few Great Pyrenees guard dogs and one adorable guard donkey. All the animals roam free outdoors, enjoying fresh grass and quality care. When it comes to fresh produce, the farm utilizes organic and biodynamic farming practices and offers a wide seasonal variety, including beautiful corn, tomatoes, okra, beans, berries, and more. A typical day for Keener is full of maintenance projects and farm chores. After helping his kids get ready for homeschool pro-

grams in the morning, Keener heads outside to tend to the animals. He feeds and waters the chickens, gathers and packs eggs, and moves the sheep to new pasture. With the animals taken care of, he continues his day with more work outdoors. From cutting firewood and repairing fences to plumbing projects and building improvements, a variety of hands-on jobs ensure everything on the farm runs efficiently. Those looking to get involved have no shortage of options. Sequatchie Cove invites the surrounding community to experience the farm’s bounty through farmer’s markets, local grocery stores, volunteer opportunities, and various events and classes hosted on the farm. With an overall goal to provide future generations with a better world to live in, the farm is always finding new ways to increase sustainability and provide abundance for others to enjoy. Keener encourages aspiring homesteaders to embrace the work as a gift. “Do your research, pick the right property, be patient, and be prepared for lots and lots of hard work,” he says. “We have always been drawn to a simple life connected to the land and living in harmony with nature. stablished in 2022, Sunny Hill Farm sprouted from Lauren and Chris Matts’ desire for intentional, country living. “We felt an ever-growing yearning to get back to our roots, quite literally,” Lauren Matts says. “At first, the craving started with a little porch garden in pots, and then we planted a few raised beds in our little backyard in the middle of the city … but we wanted more.” Now, with 37 acres, beautiful garden spaces, 15 goats, four donkeys, 20 chickens, and six farm cats, the Matts’ passion for homesteading has become a flourishing lifestyle. The garden is where it all started - their own “little Garden of Eden.” Ready to put their gardening gloves to the test, the Matts took on the challenge of building their dream greenhouse and garden area. Soon, tomatoes, cucumbers, leafy greens, and herbs filled the kitchen on their sunny hilltop homestead. Matts notes how, beyond fresh produce, gardening offers a host of opportunities for learning and personal growth. “There’s an unmatchable joy in sowing a seed, nurturing it, and watching it thrive,” she explains. “Gardening teaches patience, resilience, and a deeper understanding of the balance of nature.” In addition to maintaing thriving gardens, other important aspects of Matts’ homesteading lifestyle include animal care, 64 |

She adds another layer of intentionality with her love for scratchmade meals and healthier eating habits. Today, the farm has expanded in new ways for others to enjoy. Using regenerative and organic farming practices, the Matts grow and sell seasonal produce at local farmer’s markets. They also have a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that provides weekly deliveries of fresh seasonal produce. For those looking to get involved with the garden, volunteer days are hosted several times throughout the year. From sustainable farming practices to home-cooked meals, life at Sunny Hill Farm is all about slowing down and reconnecting with nature through gratitude and mindfulness. “While the city will always hold a special place in my heart, the call of the country, with its many blessings, now resonates deeper,” says Matts. “There is no such thing as a perfect homesteader. fter meeting her husband Robert in the Carolinas and moving to Chattanooga, Jessie Gantt-Temple - former radio DJ, journalist, and roller derby skater - decided her next adventure would be farming. She volunteered at a local community farm for five years, and in 2016, she found acreage online that would soon become Feathers & Fruit. “We spent the first few years working the fallow land with goats,” Gantt-Temple explains. “Once the pastures were walkable, we connected with a couple of local restaurants and acquired a few hundred chickens. It’s been a funny farm scenario ever since.” On 19 acres in Soddy-Daisy, Feathers & Fruit focuses on feathered animals, fresh orchard produce, and a variety of canned goods. In addition to moving her mobile chicken coop to fresh pasture each month, Gantt-Temple’s daily chores include feeding and watering, collecting eggs, and replacing straw. Regarding the orchard, she prunes and mulches in the winter, adds soils amendments in the spring and fall, and harvests in the summer. The farm yields pasture-raised poultry as well as delicious blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and figs. At least once a week, she pickles produce, makes marmalade, or preserves meat and other meals. 66 |

Through her many farming adventures, Gantt-Temple shares that it’s often the less glamorous moments that are the most teachable. In one instance, she dealt with two unruly roosters who taught her to laugh while facing challenges. “I had two roosters who tried to establish the pecking order with me,” she says. “The roosters came at me like a pair of velociraptors, and I waved my arms like one of those inflatables, stomping and yelling to establish dominance. I ended up stumbling into a hole and face-planted! Robert was watching from a distance, laughing his head off. I couldn’t help but laugh too.” In addition to selling produce and eggs at local farmer’s markets, Gantt-Temple shares her passion for homesteading by hosting a variety of unique events at the farm. From fitness events to basic pistol safety classes, Feathers & Fruit hosts it all, including canning classes that Gantt-Temple teaches on and off the farm. To anyone hoping to start a farm one day, her advice is to embrace the challenges and grow community first. “Speak with your local farmers and learn firsthand,” she says. “Any way that you try to work with nature will be challenging, so have room in your heart and mind for failure. You can do anything, but you can’t do everything!”

Alysia Leon B I R D F O R K FA R M

efore starting a farm, Alysia Leon worked as an archaeologist in Latin America and the United States. She became fascinated with permaculture and eating locally during that time, and in 2020, she started Bird Fork Farm (BFF) to become as self-sufficient as possible. “Bird Fork Farm received its name in tribute to the spring-fed creek that runs throughout a majority of the land,” says Leon. “When a friend crafted the slogan, ‘Bird Fork Farm, where the land is our BFF!’, it was set in stone.” BFF consists of 55 acres, with about 25% of the land dedicated to farmland. Offerings at the farm include small batch herbal products, honey, and ethically foraged or naturally grown produce. While there may be no livestock on the farm, Leon shares that BFF has its fair share of surprises. “Other than bees, there is no livestock out here,” she says, “but one morning I woke up with the sunrise, went outside to say hello to the garden, and there were two large cows right in my backyard!” In operation for three and a half years now, Leon explains that homesteading challenges have helped her grow a deeper connection with the land. “There is always a to-do list, and 68 |

there will always be one in this sort of life,” she shares. “Accepting that makes everything smoother.” To avoid overworking herself, Leon has learned to let nature take the lead. Seasons change and plant cycles run their course. There are times for work and times for rest. Life at BFF has taught Leon that balance is essential. When she isn’t working in the garden, Leon can be found beekeeping, lacto-fermenting produce, making homemade vinegars, or formulating herbal remedies and body care products. Leon invites the community to join BFF’s work through herbal workshops, homesteading-focused workshops, volunteer days, and a variety of on-farm community events. She also sells produce and products at various local farmer’s markets. Through her work and life at BFF, Leon hopes others will join her in caring for the earth and people. Her advice to aspiring homesteaders is to start right now, right where you are. “Focus on building community while building a connection with the land you’re on,” she says. “Go slow. Observe what is around you. Everything out there – the plants, the water, the soil, the bugs – is one big happy family.” Photos by Sarah Unger

Cynthia Shaffer R E D C L AY FA R M

n 2008, Cynthia Shaffer and her husband Ron left the city to pursue country life. Now, after 16 years of farming, the couple live on and operate Red Clay Farm, a 53-acre property in Cleveland, Tennessee. “Being on the farm has allowed us to become more sustainable,” Shaffer says. “It is not always the romantic fantasy you may envision, but the reward is having a place where we can enjoy God’s creation through our work.” With about 24 acres dedicated to farmland, Red Clay Farm is full of plant and animal life. Alpacas and sheep enjoy each other’s company in open fields, and once a year the animals are sheared for their fleece and wool fibers. Horses, goats, chickens, dogs, and cats also enjoy life on the farm. The gardens grow certified organic produce and beautiful flowers, and the farm is home to an indoor garden specialized for growing micro-greens and a grain mill. Ensuring fresh stoneground milled grains every time, the mill’s offerings include all-purpose flour, pastry flour, corn meal, corn grits, rye flour, pumpernickel flour, oat flour, and more. To keep the homestead running efficiently, the Shaffers stay busy – sometimes working 24-hour days. Their daily chores include feeding and watering the animals, collecting eggs, garden main-

tenance, milling grains, packaging products, and baking a variety of breads and baked goods. In addition to planting wildflowers, sunflowers, and sorghum, the Shaffers’ son Seth designs the crop layout for each season. Challenges on the farm, such as unexpected weather or repair needs, keep them hard at work. On Shearing Day, the farm is especially busy. The all-day event requires a professional shearer, and the community is invited to visit the farm to view the shearing process and purchase raw fiber, roving, and yarn. When they aren’t working on the farm, the Shaffers have a passion for connecting with their surrounding community. At local farmer’s markets, they enjoy meeting customers and educating them about seasonal produce. They deliver an organic CSA program in the warmer months, and year-round, their Community Supported Bakery (CSB) program offers fresh, healthy breads for pick up each week. Life at Red Clay Farm is about working hard and appreciating the beauty of the natural world. While the homesteading lifestyle might not be for everyone, Shaffer advises aspiring homesteaders to ask questions, find educational resources, and stay focused on their goals. “Do your research, and make sure you are up for hard work,” she says. “It’s worth it!” CityScopeMag.com

or Dana and Brad Bleasdale, life on the homestead turned into everything they dreamed it could be when they learned to do less. The couple started Fall Creek Farms in 2002 when it was only a rugged patch of wilderness, and over the years, the land evolved into a thriving farm. “After 20 years of keeping up a grueling pace on the farm, we realized we were running our lives with the same corporate pace we originally wanted to escape,” Dana Bleasdale shares. “In the last few years, we’ve learned to let go of anything that gets in the way of living a simple, peaceful, sustainable life – our original dream!” Today, life at Fall Creek Farms is about building family and community relationships. The Bleasdales grow a variety of fruits and vegetables and have a herd of over 200 goats. Dana Bleasdale shares that the key to the homesteading lifestyle is to lean into the community. “Our excess milk goes to a pig farmer down the road who gives us pork at slaughter time,” she says. “I don’t like to can, so our extra okra goes to a friend who loves to, and she returns it to us as pickled okra!” With a variety of skills and interests, family and friends help Fall Creek Farms thrive. 70 |

Even with plenty of help from family and friends, there is never a shortage of farm chores to go around. Feeding and watering the animals, milking goats, making dairy products, and working in the garden are all essential parts of the work. While the Bleasdales’ youngest daughter lives and works on the farm with her husband, their oldest daughter and her family runs Fall Creek Farms’ sister farm, Orchard House Creamery. Together, the family is able to care for the land and enjoy the feeling of self-sufficiency. To further connect with the surrounding community, Fall Creek Farms operates a herdshare program and offers produce and dairy products at various local farmer’s markets. The Bleasdales are also passionate about preserving homesteading skills that could be lost to time, and they offer several educational classes for those just starting their homesteading adventure. Through their work, they hope to encourage others to slow down and enjoy the simple life that homesteading provides. Dana Bleasdale’s advice to aspiring homesteaders is to develop real relationships within the community and avoid overworking as much as possible. “It makes all the difference for setting a sustainable pace when you have a community,” she says. “After 22 years, we are living out our original vision of farm and family!” Photos by Vityl Media

Moving closer to the city center for a shortened work commute, the Browns set out to craft their new home with classical flair. “When I started building this home, the shape of the house was important to me,” Doug says, “and I wanted the roofline to have that specific symmetrical look.” Featuring arched French doors and flickering lanterns, the stately exterior of the Georgian-style build sets the stage for the Brown home.

“This house has a little bit of Doug and it has a little bit of me,” says Jill. When the couple married, they balanced a shared love for antique collectibles and stunning art pieces that invite character to each corner of the house. This theme is introduced as soon as guests enter the home. An entryway vignette showcases a console table with detailed carvings upon a warm, traditionallypatterned rug, while streamlined, bright ceramic lamps provide a burst of modern sensibilities.

Moving though the home into the open living area, one immediately notices the bright blues that accent the space. The built-in bookcases, which feature a collection of chinoiserie dishes and vases, are a particularly favorite focal point for the Browns. “I have always been drawn to blues, whites, and a more classical color palette,” says Jill. In her love for decorating, Jill likes the freedom to experiment with design elements. “I like to mix the old

with the new, erring more on the traditional side with occasional eclectic pieces,” she says. The living area promises comfort alongside curiosities, such as the whimsical drum chandelier illuminating the space. Gold tones and warm colors round out the cool blues, such as with the camel suede sofas with teal and terra cotta pillows. Neutral backdrops provide the perfect canvas for the Browns to play with colors and patterns.

In addition to giving the home a dynamic sense of character, selecting paintings to showcase is a special occasion for the Browns. “When we married, we chose a lot of the artwork ourselves,” says Jill, “and sometimes on an anniversary we’ll pick out a new piece.” Walking through the main level of the home creates the atmosphere of walking through a gallery, knowing each piece has been selected with care. Above the cooktop, an original portrait pops against the sand-colored backsplash. Dark overlay cabinetry and barstools with woven cane backing work to create a sense of timeless coziness in the room. Above the island, iron-caged pendant lights invite a modern edge to the space. Steps away from the kitchen, a smart dining arrangement boasts white Queen Anne-style chairs that can comfortably accommodate six. Traditional elements are subtly woven throughout this bright space, such as the candle-style chandelier and ceramics featured against the distressed mirror. 80 |

Whether inherited or newly acquired, each element in the Brown home has an interesting history. “Both my mom and my dad were antique collectors,” says Doug. “So there are some old things in the house that were handed down from my parents.” Some of these

antiques include an 18th century fainting couch, beer steins, and a Tiffany-style lamp. The master suite honors the character of these unique pieces alongside contemporary comforts. Illuminating the room is a drum chandelier, while ceramic lamps in-

fuse the Brown’s favored blue tones to the space. Crisp quilted bedding provides a neutral foreground for the painting of a lakeside scene – one of Doug’s favorite paintings on display. Wide, paneled windows allow in plenty of sunlight, creating a truly tranquil atmosphere.

When decorating a space, Jill has plenty of inspiration to work with. “I do try to go off the artwork,” she says, “The artwork is the canvas, and from there I like to pull out the colors that are used within.” In the ensuite, neutral tilework makes the space feel warm, while additional art pieces create continued interest. His-and-hers vanity stations feature large mirrors with a metallic shine. Dark fixtures and cabinetry highlights work to provide dark contrast against the otherwise lightly-colored bathroom. After raising their family for 25 years in Charlotte, North Carolina, Julie and Bobby Gettys heard the East Tennessee mountains calling. For native Tennessean Julie, the decision to move to Chattanooga was also decision to return home. “For years, I had a desire to move closer to my family,” she says. “We loved the appeal of the mountains, river, nature, and hiking, and Chattanooga provided us with those aspects while also getting us closer to family.” With the Gettys’ two grown children settling nearby, the deal was sealed for Julie and Bobby to begin searching for their new home. When Julie discovered a newly constructed home in the neighborhood they’d been eyeing, photos of the house hadn’t yet been listed, but Julie had a gut feeling that this place would check a lot of their boxes. As a modern home in a historic setting, this house also offered close-knit community and stunning scenic vistas. The couple knew they had to act fast and closed on the house within 24 hours of it going on the market.

Perched atop a steep drive, the Gettys home promises a bird’s-eye view. Warmtoned double doors contrast the bright white exterior, while a single lantern above the threshold exudes charm. “We feel like we live in a treehouse,” Julie says, “so we wanted to play off the greens and the cool sky colors to make it feel homey but classic at the same time.” Indeed, the stacked picture windows offer a wide scope of Lookout Mountain and give the effect of being high in the canopy. To take full advantage of the scenery, the Gettys added a deck in the back leading up to Bobby’s studio. At the top of the stairs, guests can take in panoramic views of the neighborhood and the mountains beyond.

Upon entering the home, it’s easy to see what drew the Gettys to this space. Vaulted ceilings and an open main-level floor plan create an area perfect for entertaining friends without feeling vacuous. Although they downsized from their family home in Charlotte, the Gettys don’t miss the square footage. “In many ways, this house feels bigger just because of the open space,” says Julie. “That was one thing that really attracted us to the house. We wanted the open concept for hosting and having neighbors over.” Moving into a recent build, the interior of the home was a blank slate, giving the Gettys plenty of freedom to play with colors and textures. The main living room is as inviting as it is elegant, featuring a plush window seat and blue velvet swivel chairs that bridge the living area to the dining area. A minimalistic chandelier accompanies dark wood end tables to create an overall cozy feel, while cheery pops of color from glasswork and textiles breathe life into the space.

Bright colors weren’t a common theme in the Gettys’ previous styling, making them ready for a change in the new space. “The house we came from was very neutral, with browns and dark greens,” Julie says. “This is different for us, but I feel like it goes with the open space.” From the watercolor branch wallpaper to the marbled countertop, one almost feels as if they are standing in a tranquil pool.

Favorite pieces of artwork are featured throughout the house, but most cherished are the paintings done by Julie’s mother. “My late mother, Helen Arnold, painted the portrait above the bed,” says Julie, “We love how it captures the grandchildren she cherished in her lifetime so dearly.” This warmth carries throughout the room, from the yellow undertones of the fabrics to the gilded bases of the drum-shade table lamps. fter spending several years in Salt Lake City, Brenda and Larry Sargent were ready for a homecoming. The duo had spent the better part of three decades in the Scenic City before moving out West, but it wasn’t long before they were back in the Chattanooga area. “It wasn’t at all like the South,” says Larry. “The people weren’t as friendly, and the weather can really get to you after a while.” Yearning to be on Southern soil once again, the Sargents began looking for a place that offered up privacy and land, packaged all in a convenient location.

“We also needed a home that was big enough that it could fit all of our furniture,” laughs Brenda. The end result was a traditional 11,000-squarefoot home where ornate details and intricate craftsmanship are around every corner. Starting with the home’s lavish exterior, a multitude of materials are combined to form a one-of-a-kind façade. Brick details are woven in among the home’s stacked stone, while wooden shutters and shake siding offer a more organic feel.

Inside the home, guests will find many of the same materials used on the exterior. For starters, a formal dining room to the left of the foyer is set off by stately columns which feature detailed millwork and stacked stone bases. The remainder of the room boasts white brick and elaborate trim, which provides a stark contrast to the blue gray ceiling and nearby walls. In the center of the room hangs an antique, candlestyle chandelier and under it, a dining table capable of seating eight. “When we first bought this home, it had a style that was totally different than what we like. It was very country, and our furniture has more of a traditional Italian style,” explains Larry. “The intricate detail and craftsmanship that style has really appeals to me. The more you look at a piece like our dining table, the more you begin to notice all of the inlays and nuances.” Brenda & Larry Sargent

Also on the main floor is the master suite. Here, a sleigh bed provides another great example of the artistry found in the Italian furniture making that the Sargents so dearly adore. Lindsey & Pher Moore Chattanooga Whiskey Event Hall A blind date started it all for Lindsey and Pher Moore. Set up by a mutual friend, the pair bonded over a shared sense of humor at a show at the Tivoli Theatre in downtown Chattanooga. Married on April 15, 2023, the ceremony was held at Baylor Chapel, followed by a classic reception at Chattanooga Whiskey Event Hall. “I actually have worked at Chattanooga Whiskey for eight years and have always loved our Event Hall,” says Lindsey. “The barrel details and all-glass rotunda make for such a fun atmosphere. We wanted a come-as-you-are-and-just-enjoy-yourself vibe.” After attending an evening ceremony, guests made a quick drive over the Tennessee River to Chattanooga Whiskey Event Hall for a cocktail hour. A streamlined bar served a selection of local beer and wine options, as well as custom cocktails selected by the couple. The outdoor space also offered a cigar bar curated by Lindsey’s father. The party continued with live music and dinner. Guests enjoyed a spacious dance floor in the hall’s main rotunda, while an outdoor tent offered more room for seating and conversation. In lieu of a traditional plated meal and wedding cake, the couple opted for a taco bar, pizza truck, and their favorite local ice cream. Abigail & Gary Green The Commons When Abigail and Gary met at their church’s small group for college students, it didn’t take long for their love for God to blossom into a love for each other. Four years later, the duo married on a beautiful autumn day at The Commons. “This was our No. 1 choice and is one of Chattanooga’s best-kept secrets,” says Abigail. “It’s located right between downtown Chattanooga and Cleveland, Tennessee, and it’s one of the most photogenic venues in the area.” With the weather in their favor, the Greens held their gorgeous ceremony on the property’s back lawn, while the mountains, which were sporting prime fall foliage, served as their backdrop. The evening was aglow, as string lights reflected off the reception’s gold décor and the bride’s sparkling tiara. Tall flower frames ascended above the guest tables, topped by classy arrangements of white roses and greenery. The sentiment of these handmade centerpieces, which featured flowers arranged by Saul’s aunt, was complemented by a thank you note from the couple to their guests at each table. For dinner, the Dalton Convention Center catered a flavorful lineup featuring pasta and birria and served up beverages as guests enjoyed the celebration. A stunning cake display, featuring tiers of nearly a dozen cakes adorned with cascading gold beads, was certainly a highlight of the night and offered an array of flavors to suit any guest’s palate. A DJ kept the fun going as the dance floor filled with smiling faces. Looking back, Diana is grateful for how effortlessly the day unfolded. “We were both calm during our wedding, and everything went smoothly. We got to enjoy our day in peace!” she shares. Kailee & Harrison Howe Gardens in the Gorge Kailee and Harrison Howe met in Nashville, working on a COVID-19 research team during the pandemic. After their engagement at Gardens in the Gorge, the couple learned the property was also a wedding venue, and they immediately knew it was where they wanted to get married. Using the venue throughout the entirety of their wedding weekend, the duo married on July 9, 2023. “We wanted to keep with the garden theme of the venue because we loved the cottages and the property so much already,” says Kailee. “Our wedding vision was very light and airy with some traditional aspects. We wanted our guests to feel warm, welcomed, and present with us throughout the weekend.” After exchanging evening vows at The Green, guests headed to Windsor Hall for the cocktail hour and reception. For an extra personal touch, each of the guests received a letter - handwritten by the newlyweds - as they entered the reception space. Guests could also enjoy the balcony area for stunning views overlooking the gorge as well as a stationed photo booth. In addition to a custom bar menu with signature cocktails selected by the couple, mobile baristas served a custom coffee menu with drink offerings honoring Kailee’s Cuban side, Harrison’s Italian side, and a signature Americano for their dog, Ringo. Hannah Claire & Connor Rytz Hidden Springs Connected by a mutual friend through social media, Hannah Claire and Connor Rytz met when Connor reached out to ask Hannah Claire to go on a dinner date. The couple fell in love with the idea of a romantic outdoor wedding, and they knew it was meant to be when they found their dream venue at Hidden Springs. They married on October 6, 2023. “When we visited the venue, we didn’t want to leave,” says Hannah Claire. “It’s gorgeous, quiet, and peaceful. We wanted the romantic outdoors in our wedding, and I love the look of Hidden Springs year round, but especially in the fall. If it wasn’t a wedding venue, we’d probably try to buy it to live there.” Before the evening ceremony, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour inside the barn to wait out some unexpected rain. With dry seats ready and guests having had a bite to eat, Hidden Springs staff ensured the outdoor ceremony followed seamlessly, and then guests headed back to the barn for the reception. The party continued with DJ music, dinner, and a delicious spice cake with cinnamon apple filling. Lindsey & Joel Williams The Hunter Museum of American Art While working in New York City, Lindsey and Joel Williams met in the Empire State Building at a lunch with a mutual friend. The couple, having roots in Signal Mountain, planned to celebrate their big day nearby in downtown Chattanooga. They married on October 14, 2023, at the Hunter Museum of American Art. “We wanted a venue to show off all of Chattanooga’s beauty while keeping it downtown to be convenient for out-of-town guests,” shares Lindsey. “We absolutely fell in love with the views from the roof and didn’t look at another venue after viewing the Hunter.” After a short and sweet evening ceremony on the 24-hour terrace, guests headed inside the museum for a cocktail hour. The Hunter provided full bar and beverage services, complete with a champagne seating chart and signature cocktails selected by the couple. The celebration carried on with a live band, dinner, and dancing. The couple opted to serve a plated dinner as well as some of their fast-food favorites as a late-night snack, and guests enjoyed a classic black and white checkered dance floor at the rooftop reception. We spent the rest of the day with family and friends at a surprise engagement party at our favorite bar in New York.”

Industrious and creative, Sarah Love Hart harnessed her passion for cooking to build a thriving career. After attending culinary school in North Carolina, she worked in the retail and hospitality industries, eventually owning her own catering company. Hart fell in love with the way her culinary background combined with retail, and she started to dream even bigger. Her first retail concept Hart & Hive opened in 2021, and it was a major success.
