ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. But there is something special about the South today that encourages us to slow down and enjoy our every day – family, faith, community, hard work, grit, stunning nature and lands, and more.
This first annual issue of CityScope® magazine’s Southern Woman celebrates the most authentic aspects of the place we call home, told through the lifestyles of Southern women.
First up, the section Spirit leans into the spirited side of the South. We start by highlighting women who were and are “Destined for Distinction,” how they seek to live their lives, and those who have guided them along the way. In our feature “Purpose in Profession” we share those who are driven by the “why” in their careers, and in “In Pursuit of Passion” we profile those who have found respite in the outdoors through fly fishing.
In the section Nest, we share the enjoyment and special moments found in the sacred places of our homes. Showcasing everything from breathtaking scenicview porches that house the best conversations to interior design that reflects who we are inside, you’re sure to find homey inspiration.
However, as any Southerner knows, true comfort comes from a homecooked meal. In Fare, we include articles like “Creating Comfort,” in which locals share their tried-and-true recipes sure to warm the soul, and “Tasty Traditions” featuring sweet treats handed down through the generations.
Traditions, values, and life lessons are also staple hand-me-downs in our area, and in the section Kin, we feature just that. Families share their valued traditions in “Passed Down” while in “Hindsight is 20/20,” women write letters to their younger selves with sage advice and words of encouragement.
The South has class, art, and style, and in the special section Culture, we share some of the finest fashions provided by area boutiques. Not to be missed is the article “The Art of Being” which profiles exceptionally talented female artists in our area.
We hope that you will enjoy CityScope® magazine’s first annual Southern Woman issue and through this beautiful publication reflect on the incredible place we get to call home, the values and traditions it holds, and the incredible women who fill it.
Happy reading,

Born and raised in Memphis, educated at Sewanee, with my adult years spent in the Chattanooga area, I have lived under the influence of Southern culture all my life. There is a certain gentleness and default to common courtesy that characterizes the best of what it means to be a Southerner. My mother was my role model, and from her, I learned that being respectful and standing up for what I believed in were not mutually exclusive. The single biggest value that has guided my life is my faith in Jesus Christ. Though most of my adulthood has been spent in professional Christian ministry, I pray the foundational principles of loving my neighbors and treating them as I would like to be treated are the ones that I seek to model in every area of my life. I’m grateful that my husband, Scott, is not only a great model of this to me but is also my favorite accountability partner!

I dressed up as a doctor for Halloween at age 2 – ever since I’ve been focused on achieving that goal. From the corridors of medical school to assuming the role of chief medical officer, I've traversed a course marked by relentless dedication and a commitment to excellence. Along this trajectory, I've been profoundly influenced by mentors, colleagues, family, friends, and patients whose collective wisdom and unwavering support have illuminated the way. Belief in the transformative power of medicine, coupled with values of compassion, integrity, and innovation, have been my guiding forces. As chief medical officer, I stand at the nexus of healthcare leadership, entrusted with the responsibility to uphold the highest standards of patient care while fostering an environment of collaboration and continuous improvement. This journey epitomizes not only personal growth but also a steadfast dedication to the noble calling of healing and leadership within the medical community.

My journey began in Chattanooga, where I developed a deep-rooted passion for education and access. As a proud graduate of the Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences, I embarked on my academic path at a Midwest college that recognized and nurtured my gifts and passions. With a bachelor's in communications/ theatre and a master's in international service, I broadened my horizons through teaching stints in Jamaica and studying abroad in Italy and England. Community service has been integral to my journey, instilled in me from a young age through active involvement with my church and school. Joining University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as vice chancellor for access and engagement marked a pivotal moment, allowing me to spearhead initiatives focused on expanding access and championing the success of our academic community through meaningful engagement. Guided by values of equity and empowerment, I remain dedicated to fostering a more inclusive and accessible future for all.

In 1997, my husband and I moved to Chattanooga, his hometown. I feel incredibly fortunate to have landed at CHI Memorial soon after and began my career in healthcare philanthropy. Mentors including Joan Frierson, Betsy Chapin Taylor, and Jim Hill have guided me over the years and provided incredible support and friendship. I left CHI Memorial briefly in 2006 but quickly returned to my current role as president of the hospital’s foundation. I have the very best job, given the opportunity daily to connect members of this generous community with causes and projects they feel passionate about supporting, and I get to see first-hand the patients and families impacted by that generosity. Growing up in southwest Georgia, the biggest influences on my life have been my parents. Through them, I learned the importance of treating others with kindness and being gracious and fair – traits I continue to live by.

BEGINNER BEEKEEPING TIPS
Beekeeping is becoming a popular hobby thanks to global campaigns like Save the Bees. Bees pollinate one-third of the world’s crops and threefourths of all flowering plants, making these critical critters important to keep around. However, the idea of beekeeping can often be intimidating, especially for beginners. We’ve rounded up the best advice for beginner beekeeping to help you get buzzing.
Bee Prepared
• Buy the necessary equipment including your hive, tools, and protective gear, and get everything set up before your bees arrive.
• Budget for beekeeping – costs vary depending on a variety of factors. Startup costs typically range around $1,000.
• For protective gear, start with a beekeeping jacket, a bee veil, and gloves. A beekeeping suit is optional but recommended, as it protects the entire body. While infrequent, stings are inevitable for beekeepers. They can be prevented with the proper protective equipment and always handling bees gently.
• Buying bees is usually the easiest, safest way to start an apiary. Do research to determine the best bee race for you. It is generally recommended that beginners start out with two established colonies from a local beekeeper.
BY KRISTEN DEE
• Make sure to choose the right environment. Bees like morning sun and afternoon shade, and they need protection from the elements like wind or flooding. They can be kept almost anywhere that is close to flowering plants that produce nectar and pollen.
Managing the Hive
• Remember your queen bee is the most important bee in the hive, fertilizing and laying the colony’s eggs, averaging an egg per minute. Many bee farms offer packages of bees with pre-marked queens, which will help you identify her in the hive.
• Keep your colony as healthy as possible. Make sure they are well-fed and hydrated, prepared for winter weather, safe from pests or predators, and monitored regularly for hive health.
Other Tips to Keep in Mind
• Many states require hives to be registered with the state –research to understand your state’s requirements and steps.
• Understand bee behaviors during various seasons. In winter, bees huddle into a tight ball and the queen will lay eggs. The colony will grow and become crowded during spring, at which time they may split off in a process called “swarming.”
• The amount of honey that bees produce depends on where they’re located. Each bee typically makes one-twelfth of a teaspoon of honey during her life. A productive hive can make and store up to two pounds of honey a day. Do research on when and how to collect honey from the hive, and consider bringing an experienced beekeeper along with you the first few times.

Bee startup costs are typically around $1,000. This includes buying protective gear, equipment such as a frame, queen clip, and smoker, and purchasing the bee colonies.

Beverly S. Edge
What led you to the position you currently hold? When I joined HHM in 2020, I had been practicing law as a transactional attorney for almost 20 years. Because HHM’s advisory work overlapped significantly with the type of work I was doing in my law practice and we had many mutual clients, I had long-standing professional relationships with many of the HHM partners. HHM’s managing partner, Donnie Hutcherson, mentioned to me the firm’s desire to hire a COO with a legal background, and that led to me eventually joining HHM.
How has this line of work connected you more deeply with your community? A large part of HHM’s success has been as a result of its community involvement. It’s a very important part of our culture, and our team members are encouraged to be active members of the communities in which we have offices. I’ve had the opportunity through HHM to become involved with several organizations in Chattanooga that directly impact our community, such as United Way, the American Heart Association, the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, and the UTC College of Business.
Most important life lesson you've learned? Having a healthy relationship with yourself is as important as your relationships with others.
Are you working towards any personal goals at the moment? After many years of balancing raising a family and having a demanding career, now that I am an empty nester I am enjoying learning to focus on myself and trying new things. I’ve recently started hiking and hope to hike the Camino de Santiago in Spain in the next couple of years.
Any advice for ladies advancing in their vocation? Have confidence in yourself! If you are reinventing your career, try to enjoy the new challenge and see it as an adventure and opportunity to learn new skills to add to those skills you already possess.

COO, GENERAL COUNSEL & PARTNER, HHM CPAS
Emily Niespodziany
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
What led you to the position you currently hold? I always had full intentions of working in cardiac rehabilitation. As I was finishing my degree, a friend suggested I try an internship at the American Heart Association. Two weeks into my internship, I knew I was home. Working in different roles throughout the years has really helped me appreciate all the facets of our work and how important each person is to the bigger picture.
What aspect of your work are you most passionate about? For me, it's always been the survivors and their families. It's humbling to meet so many whose entire lives have been turned upside down by heart disease and stroke, yet they are full of such resilience and hope despite the hurdles they’ve faced.
What is your proudest accomplishment? Personally, my marriage and my three babies. My sweet family gives me incredible purpose. Professionally, I always feel most accomplished when my teammates have great success. I've worked with some incredible colleagues who all contribute something unique. When one wins, we all win. When one is in the trenches, we all jump in. I'm really grateful for those moments.
How has this line of work connected you more deeply with your community? I'm not sure I'll ever get used to how many people I meet each day who have been impacted by cardiovascular diseases. There are so many who fight a silent battle or suffer from chronic diseases and don't have the resources they need to have a fighting chance. When people are vulnerable enough to share their stories, the more connected we become. It's a constant reminder that our work is more important than ever.
Most important life lesson you've learned? Find something that anchors you. For me, it has always been my faith. When things become overwhelming or challenges arise, I can always pause to remember who and whose I am. Without fail, everything becomes clear.

Heidi Hefferlin
FOUNDER & PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, HK ARCHITECTS
What led you to the position you currently hold? I have always been fascinated with buildings and spaces. I pursued architecture in college at a time when there were few women in the field. After graduation, I worked at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in Los Angeles, as well as Meier and Partners on the design of the Getty Museum. In 1996, I moved to Chattanooga and co-founded an architectural firm, fulfilling my dream of designing meaningful spaces that have a positive impact on communities.
How has this line of work connected you with your community? Being an architect here has allowed me to collaborate with people across Chattanooga to design libraries, schools, recreation centers, museums, parks, and other meaningful gathering spaces. Engaging with diverse community members to understand their needs grounds me in what matters locally. Each project is an opportunity to strengthen connections and give back to my home.
What aspect of your work are you most passionate about? I'm most passionate about collaborating with clients and communities to design welcoming, sustainable buildings that elevate people's lives. Good design has the power to bring people together and facilitate human connections. I get excited seeing the impact our buildings have on those who use and inhabit the spaces we create.
Tell us about a defining moment in your journey. Starting and sustaining my own firm over the past 25 years is my proudest accomplishment. Early in my career when I attended an important meeting as the only woman in the room, I had a moment of self-doubt, questioning if I belonged at the table. But when the project we designed was approved, I felt overwhelming pride in my capabilities. My hard work was paying off, and I wasn't going to apologize for being there.
Any advice for ladies advancing in their vocation? Believe in yourself and your vision, even when others make you feel small. Collaborate with other women when you can – there is power in community. And know that you will become stronger and savvier through every obstacle you overcome. Dream big, work hard, and lift others up on the way.

Tracy Wood PRESIDENT AND CEO, JOURNEY HEALTH FOUNDATION
What led you to the position you currently hold? I've always valued perseverance, accountability, and ethics – principles deeply instilled in me by my parents. Growing up in Hampton, Virginia, I was actively involved in my high school's cheerleading team, where I first learned the importance of teamwork and community engagement. My journey into the healthcare field started with a job at a chiropractor's office. My career path eventually led me to work in hospice and palliative care, and today I am deeply involved in Chattanooga's corporate and civic communities.
What aspect of your work are you most passionate about? I have always believed that as long as you are learning, you are still growing. My philosophy about learning is embedded in the very name of our organization: we’re on a journey together. I’m passionate about engaging in more research to really understand what’s driving poor health outcomes in some of our communities. This work may never truly be finished but there is so much we can learn – and so much good we can do for families in our region –along the way.
Any advice for ladies advancing in their vocation? Pay attention to the things you’re passionate about. Really devote some time to thinking about the people, places, and activities that give you energy instead of pull energy away from you. This takes time and the answers may not be readily apparent to you – that’s ok! All you need to know is that what we nurture will grow. The things in your own life that are asking you to nurture them will reward you with incredible relationships and deeply affirming professional opportunities.
Tell us about an “I made it” moment. I’m very happy to say that I don’t think I’ve had that moment yet – and may never reach it! My spiritual life is of utmost importance to me. Scripture says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” I always want to make sure that I’m honoring that idea: doing good work and leaving a legacy for my family and my community of service. Walking that path is more important than reaching the destination of thinking “I’ve made it.”
SPIRIT PURPOSE IN PROFESSION
Virginia Anne Sharber
EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR, HUNTER MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART
What led you to the position you currently hold? Practicing law was my first career, but I have always loved and supported the arts. I trained as a dancer, performed in theater, sang in choirs from childhood through college, and served on the boards of multiple arts organizations as an adult. In 2015 – intrigued by the opportunity to get more involved with Chattanooga’s cultural gem – I agreed to step in temporarily to quarterback the very capable staff at the Hunter until a new director could be named. That was nine years ago!
What aspect of your work are you most passionate about? Being the head cheerleader for this wonderful Chattanooga resource. We are continually working to connect more sectors of the community to creativity, knowledge, and ideas. My number one role is to build a base of support for the work we do to help ensure the museum’s sustainability for future generations.
How has this line of work connected you more deeply with your community? I’ve met the regular museum visitors and the creatives who help us produce programs, welcomed many newcomers to the area, and witnessed the impact the Hunter is making with its educational programming. It has been incredibly gratifying to see how impressed tourists are and how proud Chattanoogans are of the Hunter.
Tell us about a defining moment in your journey. In 2004, I was asked by then-mayor Bob Corker to serve as the volunteer chair of the newly formed Chattanooga Public Art Committee and assist in the transformative 21st Century Waterfront project. In addition to commissioning a worldrenowned artist for the massive light masts on the Chattanooga Pier, the committee commissioned a team of Cherokee artists to commemorate the location of the start of the Trail of Tears and highlighted the new First Street connector from the Tennessee Aquarium to the Hunter Museum with a temporary installation of sculptures created by local artists. Helping to steer that project, convening the many people who worked on it, and witnessing the impact public art has had on our community was definitely a defining moment.

The scenic waters that McBryde frequents include Henry’s Fork, a section of the Snake River in Idaho and a lauded location for fly fishing. She visits the river every spring and fall and it
has left her with countless stories to tell. McBryde recalls a trip to its “Cardiac Canyon,” which involved a daring 1,500-foot-hike down to the water. However, every step was worth it.
“It’s isolated and so beautiful. I felt like I was in a movie,” she describes. “The hatch was on, and the fish were biting. I threw a dry fly all day and we stopped counting after a while. It was epic and memorable to say the least!”
Among the many fish that McBryde has caught at Henry’s Fork, one stands out. She recalls the thrill of reeling in this proud-
est catch: “I cast under the lip of a boulder and a 23-inch brown trout came up for a sip. My heart was pounding. Catching a wild fish is such a fight and an art.”
McBryde also enjoys fishing local waters and says that no matter where she goes, “nature has always delivered.” She would love to see even more women in Chattanooga join in on the sport and notes that fly shops like The Hatch Outfitters are great places to get plugged in. Having pursued fly fishing on her own, McBryde encourages anyone who is interested to book a workshop or guide and see where the water takes them.

Katie Thornton’s love for fly fishing has followed her across the country.
Thornton grew up fly fishing during summers spent in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, learning from guide, Klay Mangis. She has spent years exploring Tennessee mountain streams and worked for a time at Orvis Charlottesville teaching casting and fishing for brook trout in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Now living in Chattanooga, she shares her expertise with aspiring anglers through her business, On the Fly Outings.
While Chattanooga has plenty of bass and brim in its backyard, Thornton says she is partial to targeting trout on the Hiwassee
River, located east of the city. She explains, “The river has a powerful presence. One of my favorite times to fish it is when spring is waking up alongside it.”
Thornton also takes her skills on the road, scoring her proudest catch to date off the coast of Clearwater, Florida. During this trip, she and her father battled windy conditions with guide, Dave Chouinard. They swapped out casting from the bow of the boat as they searched for the “magnificent tarpon.” Thornton recalls the unforgettable moment when her opportunity arrived.
“Two tarpon were moving towards the skiff at nine o’clock. I made the cast just 20 feet from
the boat. There was a moment of grace as the tarpon turned her head. She took off with an iridescent jump out of the water that was powerful and surreal. Those were 30 minutes on the salt I’ll never forget.”
From trout to tarpon, Thornton finds it rewarding when her hard work results in a beautiful catch. She reflects on how a lifetime spent on the water has made it feel like a second home.
“My spirit wakes up on the water. My eyes wake up to nature’s beauty. It’s the smell of the river, the tug of the line, the feeling of the water rushing past you where time slows down to precious moments. Being out on the water with a rod in hand is a way I come home to myself.”

Fly fishing is more than just a rewarding hobby for Kim Ranalla – it’s a healing practice.
After suffering spinal injuries from a patient while working as a caregiver, Ranalla spent two years navigating the challenges of recovery. This experience would transform her perspective of the sport she had enjoyed since childhood.
“A friend invited me to fish, hoping to lift my spirits. Wading into the water for the first time, I felt transported to another dimension. The healing benefits were immediate, and the focus required for fishing helped me forget my pain and push past
Kim Ranalla
my limitations,” she recalls. “Today, despite minor movement limitations, fishing has transformed my physical abilities and led to a new career.”
Ranalla launched Miss Mayfly in 2016, the world’s first line of size-inclusive fishing and wading gear made for women. Outside of her business, she continues to advocate for female anglers, especially those healing from experiences like her own, and wants women seeking the tranquility of the water to have a support system that can “understand their unique needs and guide them on outdoor health and safety.”
Chattanooga has become a haven for anglers such as Ranalla,
with plenty of fish species and friendly faces. “No matter where my travels take me, I always find myself grateful to return home to the expansive beauty of Tennessee’s waters and landscapes,” she shares.
To beginners looking to take advantage of fly fishing’s therapeutic benefits, Ranalla advises not to sweat the small stuff.
“My best advice is something that often goes unsaid: It’s okay if you don’t catch a fish. It’s okay if your line gets tangled in a tree. It’s okay to feel inexperienced and imperfect; in fact, it’s normal. Don’t let these moments distract you from the beauty and experiences all around you. Keep trying, again and again.”

Allie Vannoy
These days, fly - fishing guide Allie Vannoy is teaching the ways of the water to a special pupil – her 3 - year - old daughter, Luna.
Vannoy was also introduced to fishing as a young girl, tagging along on trips with her Pop. A stint working at a fly shop as a teenager reignited her love for the sport and Vannoy has been fishing ever since.
Today, Vannoy guides local waters and has found a tightknit community of fellow fly fishers who have welcomed her and Luna to the fold. She shares, “I’ve got a group that meets up monthly at each other’s homes just for cooking out, catching
bluegrass, or tying nights, solely because we all met through fly fishing.”
Fly fishing with a toddler is typically limited to wading trips, since “trying to fish while wrangling a child, keeping rods safe, and manning a rig is hard to do,” says Vannoy. However, her supportive community has made special memories possible, such as Luna’s first float trip down the Toccoa River in North Georgia.
Vannoy laughs that a fivehour trip with a 3-year-old meant hearing the alphabet sung one too many times, but
says she was excited to see Luna engage with the sport. “She helped pick out my nymphs (bright pink, flashy ones, of course) which was actually good with it having rained the day before. We netted a fish immediately. She knew she picked out the rig and helped with netting, so witnessing her connection to that was really cool for me,” recalls Vannoy.
As she continues to teach Luna, and soon, another little girl on the way, Vannoy’s heart for sharing fly fishing with other women only continues to grow. “Just get out on the water,” she encourages. “Experience, no matter how it unfolds, is going to teach you.”

A pioneering force for female fly fishing, Wanda Hair Taylor says she has always felt called by the water.
Taylor comes from a rich lineage of fisherwomen, including her grandmothers, who introduced her to the sport at 4 years old. She and her mother have also bonded over their shared love for fly fishing and the memorable adventures it has taken them on.
While fishing has always been a part of her family, Taylor discovered her own passion for it when working at a fly-fishing outfitter on the Hiwassee River in the ‘80s. She credits the sport for saving her from “being a
workaholic,” explaining that every trip to the water prompts her to pause and relax. “I can think of nothing else while doing it, giving my mind a rest and vacation,” she says.
Taylor has fished around the world, breaking records along the way. In addition to reeling in sailfish in Costa Rica and bonefish in the Bahamas, she set the current world record for women’s 20 lb. class tippet spearfish on the fly when invited to vie for the title in Kona, Hawaii.
Back home, Taylor’s colleagues call her “The South’s First Lady of Fly Fishing,” due to the many firsts she has achieved. Her ac-
colades include being the first woman inducted into the Southern Fly Fishing Hall of Fame; first female Orvis-endorsed guide in the Southeast; and first woman to be certified by the International Federation of Fly Fishers as a Master Certified Casting Instructor.
Now in her third decade of providing fly-casting instruction on the Hiwassee, Taylor is creating new anglers at the same site where she fell in love with the sport. She remains a passionate voice for teaching women and girls to independently fly fish as she paves the way for female anglers to follow in her storied footsteps.

“The gentle breeze ruffles my hair, the cushions shift as my friends get more comfortable, and laughs echo between the trees. This is my happy place: the back porch.
Custom-designed and filled with personal touches, like iron woodland creatures and candles from my best friend's shop, the porch
reminds me of my favorite dinner spot. The area breathes comfort, familiarity, and style. It is a meeting place where the outside world recedes into the background – with a glass of Brunello and a cashmere Restoration Hardware throw, the day’s worries are forgotten. This feeling can be possible anywhere if you create the right setup. A subtle flow is necessary – for example, the dining table goes together seamlessly with the open-layout living area consisting of a plush sofa and swivel chairs. Whether you’re
manning the outdoor kitchen or stoking the hearth’s flames, you’re included in the conversation. And oh, what conversations we have. My back porch is my favorite place. It’s simple, it’s elegant, it’s me. It holds uncountable memories of days spent relaxing and nights spent talking late with friends, memories that seem to float on the breeze and cause anyone to smile once they step foot out the French doors.”

“The kitchen reflects the heart of our home on Chickamauga Lake. This is my favorite room where family and friends gather in a space that overlooks the lake and outdoors. Some of my favorite memories are when the family gathers for Sunday dinners or holiday celebrations when we make cookies or gingerbread houses.
Three children and their spouses along with seven grandchildren fill the home with activities, laughter, and of course delightful meals. I enjoy cooking and my kitchen allows me to be in the middle of the action while preparing our favorite selections to eat. The open layout and flow from indoors to outdoors makes this space the gathering place. The grandchildren can move about from the pool, lake, or VersaCourt while having the kitchen accessible for snacks or refreshments. The refrigerator and pantry are always full!”

“The room in my house where all the family can gather is my favorite room, the family room. Whether I’m enjoying it by myself curled up with a good book or listening to the laughter of my grandchildren, it’s become a central part of our home.
Once our three children got married, the grandchildren followed quickly, and we now have nine grandchildren making a family of 17. In 2014, we decided to expand our relatively small family room. We took three quarters of the garage for the expansion. The space is now spacious with two sofas and comfortable lounge chairs. We have a music corner for our stereo and my husband’s guitar collection; he plays every day. The shelves have books for us and our grandchildren. In the closet, we have dress up clothes and an art easel, and the base cabinets are filled with magna tiles, play dough, paint and paper, and craft supplies to keep the grandchildren busy. We didn't want a television in this space, but rather conversation or reading. It can be a rambunctious space with the whole family and that's just how we like it.”

“When we bought our Old Towne home on Signal Mountain 27 years ago, a big decorating challenge was the dining room, which sits squarely in the center of the house. As basically a large pass-through space, I wanted to make it vibrant and chose a large floral wallpaper to tie the décor together.
Over the years I have stripped wallpaper in bathrooms and repainted every single room in the house, many of them several times over! Most of the furnishings are antiques that came from my parents’ house in Fort Lauderdale, and I copied the chandelier from my sister’s house in Raleigh. We created the nook in the bay window as a cozy place to curl up with friends and family. The afternoon sunlight pours through the windows and it feels like a beautiful, serene garden. Although the wallpaper no longer ties anything together, the dining room has been the one constant in our ever-evolving home.”

Stephanie Dark
For Stephanie Dark, dressing to impress doesn’t necessarily mean racing to keep up with the latest fads. “I’m at an age where trying to impress people is no longer in vogue,” she explains. “I follow my own rules regarding my style, and that has made my home a beautiful sanctuary for my family and friends.”
Dark’s style has evolved over the years with influence from fashionable women who came before her. “My biggest style inspiration would be my mother who has always been an amazing decorator and dresser. I also loved the looks of Diahann Carroll and Coco Chanel – two style icons who were both simple and flawless,” Describing her style as transitional comfort, Dark adds, “I love the look of being put together without trying too hard, and I don't mind mixing high-end and low-end pieces to complete a look. I also love pops of color, and yellow is my go-to.”
As a lover of purses, shoes, and high-end fashion, this boutique-style closet is a perfect example of how Dark’s personal style comes to life in her home. Everything from the island to a mannequin made by artist Sheryl Benford was custom-designed. “When I walk into my closet, I feel a sense of peace and a joy regarding the items I have collected over time,” she says.

Ann Trammell Bakhaus
For Ann Trammell Bakhaus, curating a personal style is all about thinking outside the box. “I’ve always described my style as feminine with a little edge – nothing too sweet. I love throwing together color combinations that you wouldn’t expect and creating looks that are truly unique,” she says.
Bakhaus’ style is on full display in her open living and dining room, where playful details – from bright pops of color and bold patterns to fun textures – make the house feel like home for her and her husband. “It’s a vibrant showcase of my personality. This eclectic mix, reflective of my bold choices, has transformed our house into a home, uniquely ours in every sense,” she explains.
“My absolute favorite thing hangs above our dining room table: a scarf I found on a cherished family trip to Capri, a place that I hold near and dear to my heart. I decided it was meant to be displayed rather than worn so that you can see the entire thing,” she recalls. “The vibrant ‘Capri blue’ in the scarf also inspired the bright blue paint we chose for our stairs, tying the whole space together. Every time I look at it, it takes me back to my favorite place on earth.”

When it comes to design, Janis Harvey’s affinity for clean lines and attention to detail is clear to see in both her personal style and in her home. From fashion to home décor, her look strikes the perfect balance between polished presentation and comfort. “I hope that the feel of both my style and our home is welcoming,” she says.
Janis attributes the evolution of her style to the experiences she’s had throughout her life. “I have lived all over the U.S. and tried on styles from each of the major cities,” she explains. “I am most comfortable throwing on a jacket over some basics … even if only jeans and a tee. I always go back to a few foundational pieces and change the accessories.”
She takes this same approach to home décor, using a consistent color theme and adding fun accessories to elevate her spaces. This light and airy sitting room, which overlooks a beautiful garden, is a perfect example. “I used lots of ivory in this room; it’s a great foundational color that is clean and refreshing,” Janis says. “My favorite piece in here is a glass table by local Columbia, TN, artist Sydney McClain. I like it for its clean and tailored lines and translucency.”

When it comes to curating a modern farmhouse aesthetic, Katie Goodwin draws inspiration from her life experiences and the natural landscape that surrounds her home. “We moved to Tennessee from California almost five years ago, and I love the open fields and greenery and farms we are surrounded by in Birchwood,” she shares. “I love natural wood and try to incorporate that in our house as much as possible – we tore down a barn and used a lot of that wood throughout our home.”
“I’ve always loved the black and white modern look, but my son loves wearing cowboy hats, my daughter loves riding horses, and we all love farm animals – so I combined all that in my decorating style,” Goodwin explains. The timeless blend of modern and antique pieces throughout the home adds a rustic charm to the space, and thoughtful design has made it a perfect fit for her family. “I love the space we all share. My four kids are always playing games at our big island or building Legos on our dining room table. From my room and dining room, we have the perfect view overlooking our fainting goats and chickens that walk by.”

2. Add corn kernels to a skillet and cover with water. Salt to taste and cook on medium high for 20 minutes, stirring regularly to keep corn from sticking.
3. Sprinkle self-rising flour over the corn and stir and reduce heat to slightly below medium.
4. After about 10 minutes, add butter and pepper to corn, continually stirring.
5. Simmer for a final 15 minutes, adding sugar to the mixture and mixing thoroughly. Cover to keep warm until ready to serve.

Growing the Perfect Garden
HOW TO PLANT PRODUCE
BY TORY IRMEGER
From garden-fresh lettuce to juicy cherry tomatoes, nothing is quite as satisfying as home-grown vegetables. Luckily, vegetable gardening is widely accessible and adaptable to anyone who wants to get started growing their own produce! Read on for some tips about starting a vegetable garden in your own backyard.
X MARKS THE SPOT
The key to a healthy garden is picking the right spot. Most vegetables require lots of sunlight –around 6-8 hours a day. In addition to light, vegetables thrive in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil.
If you plan to plant vegetables directly in the ground, consider using an at-home soil testing kit to evaluate the acidity and nutrient levels of your soil to ensure your plants will have the best growing conditions.
CONSIDER CONTAINERS
If spatial limitations are holding you back from growing your own produce, think again! Planting vegetables in raised beds or pots is a great start for those who want to start small or whose lawns have poor quality soil. Just be sure that the containers you use have drainage holes to avoid waterlogging the plants.
PICKING PRODUCE PLANTS
East Tennessee is friendly to plenty of vegetables, such as lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and squash. When choosing which plants to include in your garden, consider both the growing conditions of your garden as well as the fruits, vegetables, and herbs you are most likely to eat. It’s better to start small with your selection rather than be overwhelmed by more produce than you can reasonably process and consume.
102 CITYSCOPEMAG.COM
WATER WITH CARE
Consistent watering is crucial to keep your plants happy, so consider placing your garden near a convenient water source. Water your garden beds in the cooler morning or evening times to avoid losing moisture in the midday heat. Soil quality plays a large role in sustaining moisture levels for your plants, so be sure to invest in nutrient-rich soil amendments as necessary.
STAGGER PLANTING
Staggered or succession planting is the process of planting vegetables of the same kind in batches a week or two apart. This extends the harvest season of your garden so that when one batch dies back, the next batch is still providing produce. Staggered planting is especially useful for crops that are susceptible to pests and diseases, such as cucumbers and summer squash.
BEWARE THE BOLT
Bolting refers to crops prematurely going to seed, typically rendering the vegetables inedible or poor-quality. Although seeding is a normal aspect of a plant’s lifespan, bolting can be a nuisance to vegetable gardeners. Be sure to water consistently, stagger your plantings, and plant during the appropriate seasons to avoid cold snaps and extreme heat.

Donna Calbough’s Coconut Pie
“I have been making this recipe for as long as I can remember. It is the recipe my mother always used, and she taught me to make it at a young age.”
In Donna Calbough’s family, it has become a tradition to pass down the recipe for coconut pie from one generation to the next. Calbough learned the recipe from her mother, and today, she shares her love for the recipe with her daughter and granddaughter. This pie has a special place at holiday gatherings, but it is also a way for Calbough to connect with her daughter regularly. “Knowing that my daughter and I share it as one of our favorites, I will occasionally call her to say I have made us a pie,” she says. “I’ll invite her to stop by and enjoy a warm slice with me.” This mother-daughter time is a sweet tradition made possible by a recipe filled with love and memories. Calbough shares that, for her, traditions are “the glue that binds a family.” Coconut pie is a comforting treat that continues to bring her family together in times of celebration and everyday life. No matter the occasion, a slice of pie and the company of loved ones is what makes this tradition sweet.

Alesha Manning’s Churned Vanilla Custard Ice Cream
“My grandfather used to make homemade churned ice cream anytime we celebrated a birthday. The rule was: everyone had to churn a little to have a little!”
Homemade ice cream is a treasured birthday tradition for Alesha Manning and her family. As a child, her grandfather would make homemade churned ice cream to celebrate birthdays, and the whole family participated in the churning process. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and family friends would all join in. Manning recalls her excitement from the first time
she helped churn. “I remember having my first go at the bucket around 8 years old,” she says. “It was definitely a rite of passage. I miss him. We continue this tradition today with my family and my kids and their friends take turns churning a little to have a little.” For Manning, this tradition is a way to honor the past and share new memories with the next generation. She calls this special treat the “sweetest, coldest, and best ice cream.” Perfect to enjoy on the first day of summer or any birthday celebration, this tradition is all about teamwork and togetherness, and Manning recommends adding to the fun with special toppings like fresh fruit and chocolate sauce.

Amber Mueller’s Snickerdoodles
“Every time I bake these cookies it brings me back to Christmastime! The smell of cinnamon reminds me of the candles burning around the holidays with my family.”
For Amber Mueller, snickerdoodles are a special part of the Christmas season. While enjoying the cookies – fresh from the oven, of course – her family has made it a tradition to gather together after dinner, play a game, and talk about life. She shares that traditions like these act as a “stabilizing force” in her life, “providing a sense of comfort, security, and belonging.” The snickerdoodles she has shared with her loved ones over the years are much more than just delicious cinnamon cookies. They are cherished moments of laughter, love, and fun. The cookies not only bring back childhood memories for Mueller, but they also
serve to strengthen family bonds and create new memories for her family today. Whether shared over a competitive card game or a nostalgic board game, warm snickerdoodles have made her life sweeter to savor. “Nothing beats the smell of these cookies coming out of your oven,” she says. “I remember that every post-dinner family gathering turns into game night, suddenly, any previous worries are forgotten!”

N’nako Kandé’s Une Affaire de Crêpes à L'ananas
(Pineapple-raspberry crêpes)
“I have now lived in the U.S. longer than I have lived in Côte d'Ivoire and France combined, and crêpes are like a culinary postcard to me. I have been making crêpes since my childhood with my ‘Maman’ (my mom), my sisters, my aunts, and my cousins.”
Crêpes are full of sweet memories for N’nako Kandé. In the crêpe-making process, “l’art du cotton” – or, “the art of the cotton ball” – is an essential part of the tasty tradition. As a child, Kandé and her sister were responsible for greasing the pan in between crêpes with a buttered cotton ball. “You had to learn just how much butter to put on the cotton ball and how to hold and roll the ball across the pan so that you would not burn your fingertips,” she explains. “It was all in the little details, but somehow, what you did well with your cotton ball seemed to determine your success with your tasty crêpes!” Kandé shares that this tradition wouldn’t be complete without a little dancing or singing while cooking in the company of friends, family, or all by yourself. She compares traditions like this one to a palm tree, beautiful and enduring even in times of extreme weather and hardship. “Traditions are the invisible chord between our loved ones, our ancestors, and our future descendants,” she says. “They are necessary roots to a tree meant to grow strong.”

Traditions and roots grow strong in Southern culture, as families honor the legacies of those before them and pass down values to the next generations. One tradition that comes to mind is the celebration of family and the birth of Jesus during the holiday season. Growing up, my mother instilled in me the importance of faith, family, and spending quality time together. Our celebrations over the years have always been centered around the holiday tree. There is something magical about the illumination of the lights, the ornaments that represent something unique about our personalities, and the star at the top of the tree shining bright that creates a beautiful atmosphere of delight! Holidays are about creating experiences and taking the time to be truly present with the individuals you love and cherish the most.
I am grateful for the celebrations I have shared with my family over the years during the holiday season and beyond. I look forward to remaining rooted in my faith while creating and cherishing many more sweet moments with those I love the most in the years to come!

Family is such an important part of our lives. It surrounds us with so much love and support to help guide us when life gets hard. My family is the most important aspect of my life, especially after the sudden loss of my father a little over 20 years ago. And I believe the healthiest we can live, mentally and physically, the longer we will be around to spend time with our families, making memories.
Growing up, I always remember my mom being health conscious. As a little girl, I would watch her doing Jane Fonda workouts while watching her soap operas, or load me on the back of her bike in the baby seat and my brother and my sister on their bikes and ride us around the neighborhood. A lot of those times my mom would put me in a stroller, a 1983 stroller, and run us around while she got her jog in. And while my dad wasn’t on deployment in the Navy, he would jog with her as well. My dad loved our fam-
ily so much. He truly was such a loving man. And with the loss of my dad, I even more proactively try to live as healthy as I can, for myself and my daughters.
Coming full circle, I now have become a passionate yoga teacher at Yoga Landing and love to share my practice with my family and our yoga communities here in Chattanooga. My mom is my biggest supporter, along with the rest of my family who I am forever grateful for.
I pray that, with the healthy habits that were passed down to me as a child, I will be able to share those with my girls and live healthy and happy lives for as long as we can.

WITH HER FAMILY
I have a giant family! For some people that might cause anxiety, but if you met me you’d know my life motto is “the more the merrier,” which stems from how my family operates.
Both of my parents are one of five siblings, so my cousins are plentiful, and I grew up with SO many built-in best friends. A tradition I’ve always loved that’s been passed through my family for years is simple but very important – we always show up no matter what, and when we do we show up as a crowd. It’s not just Christmas or Thanksgiving. It’s every birthday, basketball game, choir concert, or baptism.
Sitting in the stands of whatever activity I decide to take on are rows and rows of my cousins (first, second, and third), aunts, uncles, and grandparents. My family is scattered throughout Middle Tennessee but you can bet Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. many of them virtually travel to East Tennessee and tune in to The Daily Refresh – the support never stops.
My cousins are now married and starting their own families, but as they start their own family traditions, they cling tight to ours. Because where we prioritize our time makes us who we are, I will cling tight to the tradition of showing up and investing in my family. I’ll forever be thankful and cherish these built-in friends.
My grandmother Peggy Jo Merrell Sadler was one of eight children, all residing in a one-room home in Beersheba Springs, Tennessee. Every fall, all the descendants of the eight Merrells (about 40 of us) will make the trek up to “the old home place” for a weekend to enjoy the Beersheba Springs Craft Fair and family company. We have a strict schedule of hiking The Stone Door, four-wheeling on my grandmother’s old property, and a late night football game in the yard of our lodge. Although my grandmother and most of her siblings have gone on to their great reward, it’s so special to be able to remember them together.

My family has taught me the value of having faith in God and never giving up. I noticed at a young age that my grandparents and parents had a strong presence and were leaders and entrepreneurs in their community. My grandmother was a part of the first black RN graduate program, my grandfather was a U.S. Veteran serving in the Korean War and he worked as a detective for the Chattanooga Police Department, and my maternal grandmother owned a daycare center. My parents, Sully and Valarie Batts also worked their way up over the years to leading roles in their professions. They instilled the value of hard work in my brother and me at a young age – physically and mentally. Donya, my brother, is on his to way completing his master’s degree in engineering. Our parents taught us if we started a task, we had to finish it. I am proud to share their accomplishments with my children, nieces, and nephew. It takes keeping faith in God, determination, and strength to make it. These are the same values my husband and I are working to instill into our children as we lead by example. They've been able to watch the growth of Hacker Medias from 2013 to now. They are now seeing my husband, Sean, grow his company Hackletes for youth conditioning and training. I'm excited, and I can't wait to see what our fourth generation does when it's time for them to take the torch. From what we've seen so far, these little ones are all leaders and ready to take over in their respective fields.
Joanne Beckman
My favorite family tradition is our summer vacation. My mother and father bought a timeshare week on Hilton Head Island back when we kids were still living at home. The six of us, my parents, three brothers, and me, went every year at the same time.
Eventually, my parents purchased another unit for the same week as we brought friends with us and then spouses. As the family expanded with grandchildren and later great-grandchildren, my parents bought additional units for that same week.
When my parents passed away, they had four units, one of which they left to each of my brothers and me. Three of us have since purchased another three units to hold our ever increasing broods. We now have seven condos in the same building on the beach, and the family has grown to 28 plus friends.
The beauty of this tradition is that we all know when and where we will be together each year. Almost all of us make it every year unless work or school interferes. All the ages have
fun spending time together and it has enabled the cousins to develop relationships even though they are spread from Louisiana to Massachusetts. We all eat dinner together most nights, taking turns cooking. It is truly like a second home to us. So here we are, 45 years since the tradition began and it is still the high point of my year!

Cynthia Ask
Southern etiquette is ingrained in many of us from childhood, but being a Southerner is about far more than knowing which fork to use at a dinner party. Here, we asked our resident Southern woman, Cynthia, to chime in and answer some questions about modern etiquette. Read on for expert advice on everything from splitting the bill to staying cool at summer events.
Q: I have a girls’ weekend coming up and I will be putting the charge for our accommodations on my card. Is there a tactful way to make sure everyone contributes their fair share?
A: This can be tricky – you don’t want to seem like you don’t trust your friends, but you also don’t want to be stuck with a big bill when it’s all said and done! In a situation like this, transparency will be your best option. Once your trip has been booked, you can share the estimated final cost with the rest of the group along with the total that each party will be responsible for. You can also give options for everyone to pay you back – cash transfer apps, personal checks, etc. This way, you’re simply sharing information rather than making demands. If the time comes and someone has yet to pay up, assume they have good intentions rather than using accusatory language to remind them. For example, “I wanted to make sure you didn’t forget to send your share” is much friendlier than “you still haven’t paid back what you owe me.”
Q: My friend is in the process of buying a new home, and I can’t decide on a housewarming gift! Any advice?
A: This is an exciting new chapter for your friend, and giving a gift is a great way to share in their excitement! First, consider the reasons behind the move – are they downsizing now that the kids have grown up, or are they moving into their first home? If they are downsizing, choose a gift that won’t add clutter to their already-full space, such as a nice bottle of wine or a gift basket with luxury bath products to help unwind after the stress of moving. Otherwise, consider things you know about your friend and the home they’re moving into – do they have a dedicated bookshelf with empty spaces, or do they collect any special décor or trinkets? If you’re still stumped, feel free to ask for their input! It truly is the thought that counts, and there’s nothing wrong with making sure your gift will be well-received.
124 CITYSCOPEMAG.COM
Q: I’m pregnant with my second child, and some family members want to throw me another baby shower. Would that be tacky?
A: Not necessarily! While a baby shower is meant to “shower” first-time parents with everything they need to prepare for the baby’s arrival, a “baby sprinkle” can be a more intimate gathering to express excitement for your growing family. Costly gifts like strollers and cradles won’t be necessary if the first child has grown out of them already, but loved ones will likely still cherish the opportunity to gift a cute outfit or a special toy to your newest bundle of joy. If you want to make sure there is no confusion, you can always include a line in the invitation that says something like “no need to bring a gift, your attendance is all we are hoping for!”
Q: I will be attending several outdoor weddings this summer, and I tend to overheat easily. Is there a way to keep cool without distracting from the event?
A: Southerners are no strangers to this feeling –you want to beat the heat, but you don’t want to call attention to yourself or seem impolite to the people who invited you to their big day. In addition to picking summer-friendly fabrics and airy designs, you can plan ahead by bringing a small fan to cool you down during the ceremony. Opt for a folding fan with an elegant design (perhaps something that matches your outfit!) or even a small, battery-powered fan that isn’t noisy. You can also bring some cooling body wipes with ingredients like witch hazel or menthol to freshen up after the ceremony.
Q: I just got an offer for a great job, but I’m still waiting to hear back about a position that I would consider my dream job. Can I postpone accepting the first offer without damaging that potential relationship?
A: Interviewing for new jobs can be stressful, but it’s important to remember that you are also interviewing the companies that you apply to work for. Employers want to hire people who will be a good fit for the position just as much as you want to make sure a position will be a good fit for you. In this case, it would be best to respond promptly and express your excitement for the opportunity, request a bit of time to consider all of your options, and offer a specific date for when they can expect your decision. This tells an employer that you are tactful, considerate, and in-demand – all desirable qualities for a potential employee!

is 20/20 Hindsight
Sometimes we can only begin to understand the full tapestry of our lives through the lens of hindsight. Looking back reveals that each event – the good, the bad, and the in-between – is a single thread woven into a larger design. The trick, then, is to reflect on the past with grace, recognizing how our life circumstances played a role in making us who we are today. Here, six local women write a letter to their past selves, sharing words of wisdom that only time can bring.

Dear 5 -YearOld Inza, Love, Your Future Self
Kindness is not weakness. At the age of 5, on the tense, segregated streets of Montgomery, Alabama, you learned a few things. You could not go into most places because you were something called “colored.” Being colored was not good, or some people thought. You kept looking at your arm and wondering what was so wrong with the brown skin. Then something startling happened. On a crowded sidewalk you found yourself staring into the eyes of a man – a white man. It was not the color of his skin, but the look of intense sadness in his eyes that shocked you. He was on the ground because his legs were missing, and he was selling pencils out of tin cup. The grownups guided you away because of some disturbance on the street, but you had a screaming fit to go back and buy one of those pencils. You were given all the reasons that it was wrong for a girl like you to care about a man like him. The streets had become dangerous (riots broke out later), but you went back and bought a handful of pencils. The man’s smile broke your heart. That day, some said you were too soft-hearted for your own good, but they were wrong. There is no such thing as caring too much for others, especially when they are hurting. Be kind when the world tells you to be the opposite. It is the strongest thing a person can do.

BARBY REEVES
Dear 16 -YearOld Barby,
As columnist Lewis Grizzard once said, to be born in the South is to be “Southern by the grace of God.” Right now you do not know that, but as you get older, you will understand this truth with absolute certainty! It will color your biography in ways that will leave a defining mark on your life.
We Southern women have in our DNA what our grandmothers called “grit,” which is an old-fashioned word that means someone has courage, resolve, and tenacity.
Having grit means that during the times when life does not come in wellordered circumstances, you will persevere. Having grit means you will wisely surround yourself with people who can speak into your life with both truth and love.
Having grit means that who you appear to be and the reality of who you really are as a person are exactly the same. And, from the first to the last, having grit means that when you are my age, you will look backwards with the hope of seeing the purpose for your life – moments past but not forgotten – and see where God has been there all along.

I just wanted to let you know how much I think about you these days. Even though you were never perfect (far from it!), I wouldn’t change a thing about you or your choices because they made you into the woman you are today.
With that said, the curly hair you embraced with tempered enthusiasm as a teenager is now miraculously straight thanks to modern technology. And your baby sister, Amanda, who drove you crazy? Well, atonement has included co-hosting a weekly podcast with her for nearly seven years and counting.
When I look at this photo of you, I think about the many years you spent at the Birmingham Jewish Day School as one of the few girls or even the only girl in your class. Extracurricular activities were a social lifeline, so much so that once, in fifth or sixth grade, you tracked down a girl on your softball team named Sally Carl by calling every single Carl in the white pages until you happened to reach her grandparents. You invited her to spend the night on a Friday, knowing it meant eating Shabbat dinner with your family and grandparents. For a lot of pre-teens this would have been a mortifying deal-breaker, but you were so proud of your family and your Jewish faith then and continue to be today. And for that, I am most grateful.
P.S. Your children will no doubt Google the term “white pages.”

I know this last year after losing your brother, David, has been sad, scary, and even confusing. But trust me, things are going to get better. Make sure you keep hopping on that Silverdale Baptist Church bus as it swings by your house. Your growing relationship with God is what is going to carry you through the ups and downs of the rest of your life. Those friends you are making at church? They are priceless. In fact, they will become lifelong friends who will stick by you through thick and thin. And you know what else? All those hours spent pretending that you are a teacher –those dreams will come true. Because believe it or not, someday that church that you love will start a school. And one day, little ole you will celebrate 25 years of serving as the head of that school!
So Becky, keep learning and growing in your Christian faith, keep loving that tight-knit family of yours, keep in touch with those golden friends, and keep “playing teacher.” God has a unique purpose for your life, and one day you will see it all come full circle.

Get ready. You have a very unique life ahead of you. Monotony will not be part of it!
You know you are a problem solver, and you find joy in contributing to a whole. You will lean into this all your life because you love to make life easier for others. This will be part of your gift of service, but keep this in check. You need to learn to make yourself a priority too.
You and your husband will build fantastic businesses together, and work A LOT, but take time to celebrate the successes and be thankful. Spend more time with your family. Not just holidays or doing things that need to be done around the house. Normal, everyday time – this is what you need to remember.
Please find a wonderful doctor who you like enough to be open and ask questions. You will have a battle with breast cancer, and it might have been caught earlier, so please take care of yourself and make your health a priority all the time.
Through every phase of your life, your husband will be a rock, your complement, and your best friend through thick and thin. Yes, Brian who you just started dating, marry him, he’s the one God planned for you. He will make you better and the same for him.

Dear 32 -YearOld Christie,
Please know that while there have been many times it seems like we should have made different decisions, I believe any different choices would change how life has evolved. I would change nothing if it meant changing the children, family, friends and career that we have. Nonetheless, I impart to you some advice I’ve learned from our good and bad experiences that will help our future:
First, you can save money, but not time, so save your money and spend your time wisely focusing on relationships and experiences. Second, do not worry about what other people think. It is none of your business and they are not thinking about you when they go to bed at night. Third, use sunscreen everyday! That habit will save us time and money trying to undo all the sun damage. Fourth, start yoga now –for your mind and body! Quit running so many miles and spend that time with your children. That will also save your feet so that you will be able to run those miles when you have more time than you wish once they have left the nest. And finally, remember to just be, to breathe, and to leave nothing kind or loving unsaid.

Mixing & Matching Metals
While mixing metals in jewelry may have once been considered a fashion faux pas, modern fashion says the more the merrier. Combining silver, gold, and other metals can add a unique yet refined touch and elevate an everyday look to new heights. Read on to learn some tips and tricks to mastering a mixed metal look.

START SIMPLE.
If you’re not sure where to begin, try experimenting first with more subtle looks. Reach for dainty jewelry, such as thin necklace chains, stud earrings, and rings, and try adding in a different metal in just one of these areas. Plus, by keeping styles simple, you can let the mixed metals make the statement.
CREATE BALANCE.
Spacing out your metals can help create a cohesive look. Try not to wear, for example, all silver earrings with all gold necklaces. Instead, opt for a mix of each metal across all accessories.
SELECT SIMILAR STYLES.
While the metals may not match, the shapes and styles of the jewelry can. Selecting jewelry of the same style can prevent bolder pieces from overpowering the ensemble. Shared elements, such as gemstones or pearls, can also tie pieces together.
LEAN INTO LAYERS.
Layering jewelry adds visual interest, and all the more so when mixing metals. Wear multiple necklaces, stack bracelets or rings in alternating alloys, or if you have multiple ear piercings, try a mixed-metal earring stack. Experiment with jewelry lengths and widths to layer to your liking.
PURCHASE MIXED-METAL PIECES.
A shortcut to achieving a mixed-metal look is shopping for jewelry pieces that have already done the work for you. And with this trend on the rise, plenty of stylish options incorporating multiple metals await.
HAVE FUN FINDING YOUR STYLE.
Ultimately, mixing metals is a fun and fashionable way to express yourself. Create one-of-a-kind combinations and show off your unique style!

Carylon Cooper’s artist journey started in elementary school. After her fourth grade teacher told her she should be an artist, the resulting confidence stuck. She studied art in college, and after being a stay-athome mom to three children, she went on to audit art classes at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. During that time, a gallery representing her work encouraged her to start painting on larger canvases, and she never looked back.

Through the years, Cooper’s work as an artist has taught her the beauty of new beginnings. “At 75, I’m still learning. I hadn’t planned on starting over at this stage of my life, but I’m as excited as those hounds I paint. When I’ve painted something I’m not happy about, I turn the canvas upside down and begin another painting. There are no failures – just more character to the painting. I’m betting that my new life at 75 will be richer, more fulfilling, and more worshipful than my younger days.”

Dannita Noble
Exploring abstract color and texture to evoke happiness and healing.
The encouragement of a good friend pushed Dannita Noble to chase her dream of becoming a full-time artist. She began painting live on Facebook during the pandemic, and her work gained traction. Support came from all directions – friends, family, followers, and even a doctor she worked for purchased a couple of her paintings. Now having been a professional artist for four years, Noble continues to feed her creativity and live life outside of her comfort zone.
Noble says her style is abstract with a focus on acrylic paints. Her work features bright colors and fun textures. Electric pinks and blues as well as bold drippings and splatters are all part of her playful style. Currently, she shares her excitement about a collaboration with an upcoming bar and restaurant called Home and plans for a travel-inspired exhibition. Her art-making philosophy is all about staying in the moment and fostering a sense of happiness.
“I make my coffee in the morning, light my incense, put on whatever music I am feeling to get me in the
mood, and I just create,” she says. As a mother of two, her art-making is a cherished opportunity for selfcare and self-expression, and the resulting joy is infectious.
Noble shares that, when it comes to lessons learned, her work has been an agent of healing in her relationship with failure. “Creating and painting, for me, has healing aspects that go beyond creating in the moment,” she says. “My art has taught me to push past my comfort zone in all aspects of life. I have lived in comfort and fear of failing, but when I create, I know that there are endless possibilities.”

Maddin Corey
Capturing everyday moments to depict the whimsy and sincerity of life.
Born and raised in Chattanooga, Maddin Corey began her adventure into the world of art when her daughters started elementary school. Her passion for oil painting flourished at Townsend Atelier, a local art school and art materials store, and her desire to learn more led her to a variety of workshops across the Southeast. As a professional artist today, Corey continues to create stunning work in her home studio.
Warm colors and expressive brushstrokes define Corey’s style. Children’s portraits, large
triptych florals, animal portraits, and still-life pieces full of character and emotion are among her current body of work. She shares that her current excitement is about a series of large triptych paintings, including a giant rhododendron, whimsical tropical plants, and flamingos. Her art-making philosophy has everything to do with letting go of perfection. “My first love is painting children's portraits,” she says. “I encourage parents to allow the child to have some input in the process. I’m more able to capture the whimsy of childhood when the child is
happy. The hair might be messy, but the smile is genuine.” In her portrait work, Corey aims to capture the sincere expressions of her subjects, and her passion for depicting real-life moments carries into all of her work.
Corey shares how art has taught her to savor the process with her loved ones. “I try not to take my art too seriously,” she says. “I paint because I love the entire process. My favorite times in my studio are the days when my three grandchildren join me. We have had painting days in which each has a giant canvas of their own.”

Olivia Reckert
Curating bright and bold spaces to spark joy and excitement.
From creating window murals for local Chattanooga businesses to painting leather jackets for celebrities like Dolly Parton and Kesha, Olivia Reckert has worked as a professional artist for nine years. She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City from 2014 to 2018, and during the pandemic, she moved to Chattanooga and started to experiment more with her murals. Today, Reckert continues to inspire and connect with others through murals and painted leather jackets.
Reckert’s style is full of movement and bright color. In her work as a muralist, she creates large-scale paintings on a variety of surfaces, including leather, canvas, textiles, furniture, and cars. Currently, she shares her excitement about a project for Fast Break Athletics that brings “50 years of Chattanooga running culture to life” as well as her work painting leather jackets with Wet Leather Co.
When it comes to her art-making philosophy, Reckert believes that art should be created with the end goal of evoking a specific feeling or experience. “I have a degree in marketing, so I like to understand the
clientele and make work that will spark joy, fun, and excitement when they interact with the space,” she explains. “I love to help make people’s visions come to life.”
Reckert says that art has taught her important lessons about perseverance, planning, communication, and patience. “Whenever I paint, I go into a meditative state and reflect a lot on my life,” she says. “Artwork forces me to be present in the moment, and seeing my work over the years brings me joy because it is like a Polaroid of memories and feelings throughout my life in NYC and Chattanooga.”
