THIS SPRING!
Any tips for a firsttime mom?
Though being a first-time parent can be frightening, your new baby is fortunately very resilient! There are several things to note if your child is hydrated enough. One, if your baby continues to make tears when they cry, that is a good sign. If you notice wet diapers once every 6-8 hours, your child is still hydrated well. However, if your child’s mouth looks dry or has crusting around it, these are some signs of early dehydration. If your child has had frequent loose stools or vomiting, be sure to offer them fluid (water or Pedialyte-like; NO sodas or juices) in small amounts around room temperature – ideally around an ounce or two every 10 minutes. Even if there is some delayed vomiting, your child’s stomach lining rapidly absorbs fluids when needed. But, if you feel your child is in need of fluids that you cannot replace, do not hesitate to seek help!

Q. I’ve recently decided to seek treatment for my disordered eating, but I’m worried that working through it in a group setting will be embarrassing. Any advice?
A. The idea of group therapy can initially seem intimidating. Opening up in front of others about specific and very personal struggles can come with a lot of fear, shame, and embar rassment. This is normal for someone beginning their search for treatment, and freedom, from the eating disorder. You may think that you are the only one to feel like you do, and that you are alone in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Group therapy gives you an op portunity to interact with others going through similar experiences and recognize that you are not alone. Hearing from others about their recovery journey can also provide you with encouragement and the belief that healing is possible. Addie Bramlett, RDN, LDN, CEDRD
Q. I didn’t wear much sunscreen when I was younger, but now that I’m in my 40s, I’m noticing a lot of dark spots and sun damage. Is there anything I can do to improve this?
A. Yes! Using a prescription skincare line that is made to address pigment from sun damage is a perfect place to start. This will help to fade the brown spots on the skin’s surface and suppress melanocyte production deeper in the skin. This is typically a six-month regimen. Products such as the Obagi Nu-Derm correction kit are great. You can then refine and resurface the skin with laser light photo facials and resurfacing lasers. I recommend the stacked treatment of Broad Band Light to stimulate collagen production and the Moxi laser to promote cellular turnover and reduce pigmentation.

QI notice that my baby gets dehydrated when she’s sick, but I don’t always know if it’s serious enough to call for a trip to the doctor.
Q. My elderly father will be moving into an assisted living facility later this year. Any advice on how we, as his family, can make this transition as smooth as possible for him?
A. This decision is not always an easy one, but of course you want your dad to enjoy his experience while living a worry-free lifestyle and knowing care, fun, and community are available at his future home. Communicating any of your concerns is vital in the transition process. Facility directors can take past experiences that have worked for similar families and have a positive result. I would encourage you to
bring your dad over, if possible, for a social event or perhaps a game of bingo to get a feel for the community and meet some future neighbors of his. Lastly, decorate your dad’s room like his favorite room in the house; bring his favorite chair, book collection, or painting to hang. All of these attributes will allow for a sense of familiarity and really make his new home feel like his.

Q. I’ve been dealing with carpal tunnel for a while, but lately the pain has progressed. Will I need surgery?
A. In short, it depends on the severity of your condition. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) can cause numbness, pain, and even weakness of the hand because of a compressed median nerve in the wrist. Maintaining a flexed or extended wrist position can lead to CTS, so wearing a brace or splint can help reduce pressure on the median nerve by keeping the wrist in a neutral position. Bracing can be especially helpful at night or when doing activities that worsen your symptoms.
Identifying aggravating activities and avoiding repetitive hand use is important in managing CTS. NSAIDs can help relieve inflammation and pain, and corticosteroids can be injected near the median nerve. These non-operative treatments can be especially helpful for milder cases, but in severe CTS, surgical treatment is often needed to prevent permanent nerve damage. That’s why it’s important to see a physician who is experienced in treating CTS for appropriate evaluation and management.

Asthma in Adulthood
Asthma is one of the most common long-term diseases among children in the United States, with symptoms ranging from wheezing and coughing to difficulty breathing. In many cases, these symptoms subside during the teenage years, but adult onset asthma is more common than many realize. Here, local experts share vital information about the disease and how it affects adults. Read on to learn how you can keep yourself and your loved ones breathing easy.
By Catherine Smith
22 healthscopemag.com
What Is Adult Onset Asthma?
Asthma is chronic inflammation in the airways of the lungs that affects over 26 million Americans – both children and adults. It is divided into two categories: intermittent and persistent. If a person has intermittent asthma, their symptoms come and go, and they typically feel normal in between flares. Persistent asthma means the person feels symptoms frequently or most of the time. Asthma can also be classified by the cause of symptoms: allergic, meaning it is triggered by allergens such as dust, pollen, or pet dander; or non-allergic, meaning it is triggered by other factors like exercise, stress, or illness.
“Asthma can develop at any age, and the symptoms are strikingly similar in both children and adults,” says Dr. Lee M. Perry, an allergy and asthma specialist with Chattanooga Allergy Clinic. “The most common symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, and a cough that can occur at any time of the day, but is often noted to be worse at night.” Additionally, Michele Pierce, a family nurse practitioner with The Allergy Asthma Group of Galen, says, “Signs and symptoms of asthma can vary from person to person. Some people may have asthma symptoms only with strenuous activity or exercise, while others may experience symptoms more frequently.”
What Causes Adult Onset Asthma?
There are several factors thought to play a role in adult onset asthma. Dr. Perry explains, “First, a family history of asthma and environmental allergies make asthma more likely. Second, if a patient has been diagnosed with eczema, their risk of asthma is increased. Finally, a history of seasonal or year-round allergy symptoms is a major risk factor.” Some additional risk factors are more prevalent among adults than children. According to Pierce, “Environmental factors, such as prolonged exposure to workplace irritants or cigarette smoking, can lead to inflammation of the airways and contribute to the development of asthma. Less commonly considered risk factors for developing asthma include obesity and hormonal changes that can trigger an asthma flare in pregnancy or menopause.”

How Is Adult Onset Asthma Diagnosed?
Asthma is diagnosed the same way for both adults and children. “Anyone who regularly experiences a cough, shortness of breath, or wheezing should be evaluated by an allergy/ asthma specialist, regardless of age,” says Dr. Perry. “If a patient has symptoms and a history consistent with asthma, a firm diagnosis is usually made with the help of lung function testing, or spirometry, which can be performed in-office and only takes a few minutes.”
Though clinical testing for adult onset asthma is relatively straightforward, the trouble is that, generally speaking, adults are more likely than children to have other conditions or
diseases that can complicate diagnosis. “The symptoms of asthma can mimic those associated with other conditions such as COPD, heart disease, or anxiety. But asthma symptoms tend to be recurrent and will typically involve a specific trigger to cause the cough, wheeze, or shortness of breath,” Pierce explains. “It is important to discuss your symptoms with your healthcare provider in order to determine the appropriate testing and treatment.” Remember that while it may be normal to slow down a bit with age, symptoms like wheezing and difficulty breathing should not be written off as a normal part of aging.

Managing Adult Onset Asthma
Proper management of asthma is critical regardless of a person’s age. “Poorly controlled asthma can lead to unnecessary emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and potentially death. More commonly, asthma symptoms can prevent people from performing at their best, whether it be at work or at home,” Dr. Perry says. “Thankfully, there are excellent asthma treatments that can improve one’s quality of life significantly!” Treatments include:
Bronchodilators: These medications relax the muscles around airways so that air and mucus can pass through more easily, improving the ability to breathe. These are often taken at the onset of symptoms for quick relief.
Antiinflammatories: These medications reduce swelling in the airways and limit the production of mucous. They are often prescribed for daily use to manage chronic asthma or prevent flares.
Biologic therapies: These medications are modified from the cells of another living organism to target specific molecules in humans. In cases of severe asthma, biologics can be used to target antibodies, inflammation, or certain cell receptors to control symptoms.
In addition to medications, certain lifestyle changes can improve outcomes for people with asthma. “Lifestyle changes can have a positive impact on someone trying to manage asthma. It is important to identify triggers that may contribute to asthma symptoms and try to avoid them,” Pierce advises. “Avoiding triggers can reduce the frequency and severity of asthma symptoms. Definitely quit smoking. Exercising regularly can help improve lung function and decrease stress. If allergies cause asthma symptoms, it is important to schedule an appointment with your allergist for specific testing to help identify the potential allergic triggers for asthma.”
While there is currently no cure for asthma, there are plenty of ways to manage symptoms so that you can get back to the things you enjoy. It is important to always be aware of any new or worsening symptoms, and speak to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about your breathing – particularly if you have a personal or family history of asthma. Dr. Perry concludes, “I cannot stress enough the importance of accurately diagnosing asthma and allergies. Once the diagnosis is made, a treatment regimen can be started that can help you live your life to the fullest.”

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of abnormal heart rhythm in the United States, but many people don’t realize they are living with it until it becomes a problem. Untreated atrial fibrillation can have serious consequences including stroke or heart failure, so it is important to understand the symptoms in order to catch it early. Here, local experts share critical information about diagnosing, treating, and managing atrial fibrillation.
What Is Atrial Fibrillation?
Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a type of arrhythmia, which is an irregularity that causes the heart to beat too quickly, too slowly, or in an abnormal rhythm. The heart has two upper chambers (atria) and two lower chambers (ventricles) which must work together to effectively circulate blood through the body. With
Atrial Fibrillation
Understanding The Most Common Arrhythmia
By Catherine Smith
atrial fibrillation, abnormal electrical signals in the heart cause the upper and lower chambers to beat out of sync, impairing blood flow. “AFib is a chronic disease which typically starts out as paroxysmal (coming and going on its own) and may progress to persistent (lasting more than a week) or even permanent AFib if left untreated,” says Dr. Sean Dunn, a cardiac electrophysiologist with Hamilton Physician Group.
Symptoms
Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
Chest pain
Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
Fatigue and/or limited ability to exercise
Shortness of breath
General feelings of weakness
The effects of AFib vary from patient to patient. Dr. Kelly Richardson, a cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist with The Chattanooga Heart Institute, explains, “Some people can feel their heart racing or may notice palpitations. Some patients have described it as a sensation like a fish is flopping around in their chest. Others don’t really feel the heart itself, but they notice things like shortness of breath, fatigue, or swelling in their legs that impact their ability to perform daily activities.”
According to Dr. Harish Manyam, chief of cardiology and director of electrophysiology at Erlanger Health System, most AFib patients will notice at least some symptoms, but roughly 15% of AFib cases are asymptomatic. He warns, “Their first sign of having AFib could be a stroke.” For this reason, it is best to speak with your doctor about any new symptoms, even if they are vague.

Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke
The greatest danger associated with AFib is stroke because AFib prevents proper blood flow, which increases the risk of blood clots forming. Dr. Richardson explains, “There is a pocket on the outside of the left atrium called the left atrial appendage, and this is where 90% of the clots that cause AFib-related strokes are formed. If that clot gets dislodged, it can then go to the brain and cause a stroke.”
Even mild AFib increases the risk of stroke significantly. “Data shows that clots can form in just minutes. We've seen some correlation with people who have had just five to six minutes of AFib that has been associated with a stroke in some cases,” says Dr. Manyam.
“Certain patients are at a higher risk for developing stroke. Known risk factors for stroke include being 65 or older, female gender, history of prior stroke, and other medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart failure, and vascular disease. The risk of stroke increases with each additional risk factor,” says Dr. Dunn.
Risk Factors
Sleep Apnea: Having sleep apnea puts you at significant risk of AFib. “Sleep apnea is related to an obstruction of the airways that causes an increased pressure in the lungs, and that pressure can actually stimulate the areas that cause AFib,” Dr. Manyam explains. “It is very hard to control AFib when a patient also has sleep apnea, so it is very important to treat that as well.”
Obesity: “Obesity is a big contributor, and studies have shown that losing weight helps reduce inflammation in the heart and therefore reduces the risk of AFib. On the other hand, if patients continue to gain weight, the AFib will continue to progress,” says Dr. Richardson.
Alcohol Consumption: “Binge drinking is a known contributor to atrial fibrillation. A long time ago, it was nicknamed ‘the holiday heart’ because people would go to parties, drink more than usual, and then end up in AFib,” says Dr. Richardson. “Patients who have even a few drinks a week will have more AFib than patients who do not.”
Age: As a person ages, their risk of developing AFib increases more and more. Dr. Dunn says, “It is estimated that 1 in 4 adults over the age of 40 is at risk for AFib.”
Heart Disease: Other heart conditions such as heart valve problems, congenital heart disease, heart failure, coronary artery disease, or a his tory of heart attacks increase the risk of AFib.
Additional risk factors include use of stimulants, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, family history of atrial fibrillation, and other chronic health conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, or lung disease.

Treatment
“Because there is no known cure for atrial fibrillation, therapy focuses on reducing the risk of stroke, avoiding rapid heart rate, and restoring normal rhythm,” says Dr. Dunn. “Heart rate controlling medications, such as beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers, are used to prevent rapid heart rates which can contribute to symptoms and over time may lead to the weakening of the heart muscle.”
Blood thinners are used to prevent the formation of blood clots and mitigate the risk of stroke. For patients who cannot take blood thinners, procedures to close off the left atrial
appendage – where most of these clots form – can be very effective. When it comes to addressing the arrhythmia itself, there are several procedures that can be beneficial. “If a patient is very symptomatic and persistent, we want to try and get them back into a normal rhythm,” Dr. Richardson explains. “One option would be to perform a cardioversion to try and shock the heart back into normal rhythm.” Additional options include anti-arrhythmic medications or an ablation. “An ablation is a procedure that involves tracking wires up through the leg and into the heart, then using a special energy source
called radiofrequency ablation to actually cauterize the areas that are causing AFib.”
Prevention
For people in high-risk groups or anyone who wants to keep a closer eye on their heart, Dr. Richardson recommends checking your blood pressure or heart rate periodically, particularly if you feel something may be off. Technological advancements have also resulted in wearable devices, such as Fitbits, which allow you to monitor your heart rate. For those who can afford them, Apple watches can even notify you when you may be in AFib.
With treatment, atrial fibrillation does not have to hold you back from living life to the fullest. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, and keeping medical conditions like sleep apnea under control can reduce the risk of AFib significantly. Above all, being cognizant of any new or worsening symptoms and seeking medical advice sooner rather than later are very important.

Life With Down Syndrome
Roughly 5,100 babies are born with Down syndrome each year in the United States, making it the most commonly diagnosed chromosomal condition. Despite this fact, however, misconceptions about life with Down syndrome abound. Read on to learn more about how people with Down syndrome can live their lives to the fullest with insights from Dr. Jenesis Yanez, a developmental-behavioral pediatrics specialist at Siskin Children’s Institute, and Theresa Nix, founder and CEO of Downside Up, a nonprofit supporting families and children with Down syndrome and other disabilities.
By Catherine Smith
What is Down Syndrome?
Down syndrome is a lifelong condition that occurs when a baby is born with an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are bundles of genes found in each cell of the body which dictate growth and development. Typically, infants inherit 23 chromosomes from each parent for a paired total of 46, but Down syndrome occurs when an additional chromosome is present in one of the pairs – specifically, the 21st – for a total of 47. This additional genetic material alters the course of typical development, resulting in Down syndrome. There are three types of Down syndrome:
1. Trisomy 21 (≈95% of cases) – An extra 21st chromosome occurs in each cell.
2. Translocation Down Syndrome (≈3% of cases) – An extra 21st chromosome occurs in each cell but is attached to another chromosome. This typically causes the same effects seen with Trisomy 21.
3. Mosaic Down Syndrome or Mosaicism (≈2% of cases) – An extra 21st chromosome occurs in some cells, but not all. Depending on how many cells are affected, mosaicism can cause fewer of the traits associated with Down syndrome. Each type can cause some of the traits commonly associated with Down syndrome, including physical traits such as flattening at the bridge of the nose, almond-shaped eyes that slant upward, small stature, low muscle tone with potential for loose joints, and a deep crease across the palm of the hand. There is also the potential for certain health complications. According to Dr. Yanez, “These medical conditions include hearing loss, obstructive sleep apnea, and thyroid illness. Most of these conditions are treatable, and individuals with Down syndrome can lead healthy lives.”

36 healthscopemag.com
healthscopemag.com 37
Additionally, Down syndrome can cause mild to moderate developmental delays. “Children with Down syndrome often have delays in gross motor skills, fine motor skills, and communication. Early intervention through therapy services such as physical therapy, speech therapy, or occupational therapy is highly recommended to meet the needs of these children by supporting or strengthening their skills in these areas,” says Dr. Yanez. It is important to remember that each person with Down syndrome is a unique individual. The common characteristics associated with Down syndrome can show up in varying degrees from person to person; and just like people without Down syndrome, each individual will have varying abilities. Furthermore, especially with early intervention, these differences don’t have to hold people back from living happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
Treatments
Down syndrome itself is not a condition that has a singular treatment, so therapies and programs instead focus on maximizing an individual’s capabilities and addressing any challenges they may have. Physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy can help individuals with Down syndrome live their lives to the fullest. Early intervention programs exist to give children with Down syndrome access to these therapies as soon as possible, as they are very beneficial during early childhood development.
PHYSICAL THERAPY Because Down syndrome causes low muscle tone and the possibility of loose joints, physical therapy is very important. Activities and exercises to strengthen muscles can help to prevent injury and improve motor skills. Early access to physical therapy
can help children develop strength, improved posture, and fine motor skills that are useful throughout their lives. Furthermore, addressing any physical challenges can prevent children from developing compensatory movement patterns that can be detrimental long-term.
SPEECH THERAPY Children with Down syndrome often experience speech delays, but access to speech therapy early in life can make a significant difference. Speech therapists can help children develop the skills needed to form words, which include echoing sounds, looking at the speaker, the ability to listen to sounds and comprehend speech, and fine motor skills such as moving the lips and tongue. Starting speech therapy earlier in childhood can lay the foundation for stronger communication skills through adulthood.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Occupational therapy focuses on developing skills to gain independence. For children, the emphasis is on the ability to turn knobs or use tools such as writing utensils, the ability to dress themselves, or the ability to play and interact with others. Occupational therapists will work with each child on an individual basis to address skills that are challenging and build on each child’s individual strengths.
38 healthscopemag.com FEATURE
The Importance of Inclusivity
In addition to the aforementioned therapies, children and adults with Down syndrome benefit greatly from inclusive social, educational, and work programs. “Individuals with Down syndrome attend school, vote, have relationships, and can contribute to society in enriching ways,” says Dr. Yanez. “It is very important for us to continue to promote accessibility, accommodations, and the presence of individuals with Down syndrome in schools and in the workplace as they have so much to give back and teach others across all age groups.”
Special education services support children in inclusive environments where they can play, learn, and engage with same-age peers. According to Nix, who founded Downside Up after her son was born with Down syndrome, “Being in an inclusive environment with typically developing peers helps the child with Down syndrome interact socially in addition to their education. They learn by watching and participating alongside friends their age. But it’s also beneficial to the children without disabilities, because they learn to see the person rather than the disability and that they are more alike than different.”
For children and adults alike, nonprofits like Downside Up, which offers various programs for people with disabilities and their families, provide a place where everyone can be themselves, which helps develop confidence and decrease feelings of isolation.
“People with Down syndrome have the same emotions and want the same things that everyone else does – friendship and acceptance,” Nix explains. The feeling of belonging that comes from attending school, work, or social gatherings can significantly improve an individual’s outlook on life and their ability to thrive.

“Weight-bearing CT scans capture high-resolution images of a patient in the natural standing position, when the foot and ankle are ‘at work.’ These scans are faster, more detailed, and provide more clarity when creating treatment plans for patients.”
Jesse Doty, MD Foot and Ankle Specialist Erlanger Orthopaedics
Bilateral, Weight-Bearing CT Imaging
Advancements to CT scans are making the process more efficient and accurate than ever.
A computed tomography scan, best known as a CT scan, is a medical imaging technology that provides detailed three-dimensional images of a patient’s bones and joints. Advancements to this noninvasive technology have greatly enhanced its process, exemplified by the bilateral, weightbearing system.
How Does It Work?
Unlike traditional CT scans, which require patients to lie still on a table that then slides into the scanner, a bilateral, weight-bearing CT machine allows patients to stand upright. When receiving a weight-bearing CT scan, you will first step onto a circular platform, using handlebars to assist you. The entry doors will close around your legs as you stand in place, and the operator will begin the brief scan. You will then be free to exit the machine, after which your scan is complete and ready for analysis.
The Benefits of Bilateral, Weight-Bearing CT Imaging
Multi-extremity capability . In addition to the weight-bearing function for the legs, this technology can also provide non-weight bearing scans for the upper extremities. Multiple functions allow this standing system to attend to a wide range of imaging needs.
Natural patient stance. Weight-bearing CT machines allow patients to stand normally, which helps surgeons make more informed decisions about alignment.
Quick scan time. Traditional CT scans take between 10-30 minutes, while a bilateral, weightbearing scan takes a minute or less. This efficient system optimizes the CT scanning process and allows both doctor and patient to review results sooner.

Aspirex Mechanical Aspiration Thrombectomy System
This efficient thrombectomy device can help manage deep vein thrombosis.
A thrombectomy is a procedure that removes blood clots from the vessels of the peripheral venous system. A clot, also known as a thrombus, can prevent healthy blood flow to the extremities and organs and can cause pain and more serious complications if left untreated. Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, occurs when a clot forms in a deep vein, typically in the legs. A thrombectomy may be recommended to help manage this condition; the Aspirex Mechanical Aspiration Thrombectomy System helps make this procedure efficient and effective.
How Does It Work?
The Aspirex is a simple and safe mechanical thrombectomy device. During a thrombectomy using this system, a catheter is first inserted via a small incision into the affected vein. An internal helix within the device will then create a powerful suction to capture the clot inside. As the clot travels through the catheter, it is broken down to mitigate clogging, and then transported out of the vein.
The Benefits of Aspirex
3-in-1 function. The Aspirex accomplishes every step of
the thrombectomy procedure as it aspirates, macerates, and transports the blood clot. This complete mechanism of action maximizes efficiency.
Minimally invasive. Compared to the surgical alternative, a mechanical thrombectomy is less invasive and gentler on the body.
Restored blood flow. With the clot successfully removed, blood flow is returned to the limb. This restoration of circulation prevents complications caused by deep vein thrombosis and helps the limb regain healthy function.
An Expert Weighs In
“DVT is an uncommon problem for most people, but it occurs frequently enough that most everyone has heard of ‘blood clots’ in the legs. If an acute clot forms in a leg, patients generally will experience pain, swelling, and color change of the extremity. If DVT is suspected, immediately go to the ER or your primary care physician, where an ultrasound will confirm the diagnosis. Treatment is two-fold. First, an anticoagulant will be prescribed. Second, seek a referral to a vascular surgeon. They are the specialists who perform the thrombectomy, if needed.”

“Orthopedic surgeons are continually working to improve the success of joint replacement surgery by developing, evaluating, and refining existing and new surgical techniques. As a result, we have a range of surgical options when it comes to total hip replacement surgery. Because the anterior approach is one of many successful techniques for a hip replacement, it’s important to discuss the specific advantages and disadvantages with regards to an individual patient’s goals, anatomy, body type, and medical history when formulating a surgical plan to optimize the patient’s outcome.”
Joshua Lawson, MD
Total Joint Replacement Surgeon Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics
Anterior Approach
Hip Replacement
Candidates for this total hip replacement approach can find great relief from hip joint pain.
Total hip replacement surgery relieves pain and restores mobility to individuals whose hip joints have been damaged from arthritis and have not found relief with other conservative treatments like medications, physical therapy, or injections. There are multiple approaches to this procedure – one of which is the direct anterior approach, where the joint is accessed through the front of the hip.
How Does It Work?
During this minimally invasive procedure, the surgeon makes an incision on your leg, near the groin, and removes the damaged hip joint. An artificial joint, featuring a ball and socket made of metal, ceramic, and plastic, is then installed. Recovery starts right away with patients walking the day of surgery and includes several weeks of physical therapy. Most patients can resume normal light activities within three to six weeks of surgery.
The Benefits of Anterior Approach Hip Replacement
Personalized approach. The method used for total hip replacement is decided on by you and your physician. Recipients of anterior approach hip replacement can be assured that this method was selected for their situation as part of a personalized treatment plan chosen with care.
Muscle sparing. Frontal entry makes it possible to reach the joint by separating the muscles, rather than splitting them. For the appropriate patient, this can minimize postoperative pain during the initial recovery period, and because less tissue is disrupted, postoperative hip precautions are often not required.
Restored mobility. Total hip replacement is an effective way to restore function and alleviate pain from damaged joints. Thanks to this procedure and the advanced technology that makes it possible, recipients can enjoy reduced pain, improved range of motion, and better quality of life.

Vestibular IR Video Goggles
Vestibular Infrared (IR) Video Goggles, also known as Video Frenzel Lenses, track a patient’s eye movements to assess problems with vertigo and dizziness. This advanced technology can help physical therapists accurately identify the cause of imbalance.
How Does It Work?
Vestibular goggles look similar to virtual reality headsets and fit comfortably on your head using a strap and padding. The goggles are wired into a laptop, where your physical therapist is provided with clear images of your eyes. During the testing, you will be unable to see anything except the technology displayed through the goggles. This technology tracks small eye movements that give your physical therapist a better understanding of what is causing your balance-related issues.
The Benefits of Vestibular IR Video Goggles
State-of-the-art. Vestibular goggles have revolutionized physical therapists’ ability to track patients’ eye movements. By utilizing video technology, the goggles can reveal
otherwise indiscernible eye movements that the previous optical model could not. The ability to observe these movements has greatly benefited the diagnosis process.
Broad scope. Because many different issues can cause dizziness and vertigo, vestibular goggles can identify a wide range of disorders. Ear infections, motion sensitivity, and even more serious conditions like stroke and brain injury can be identified using this device.
Informed treatment. An accurate diagnosis using vestibular goggles allows your physical therapist to provide individualized care as you return to daily activities. This technology can help inform treatment plans that aid balance, decrease dizziness and vertigo, and most importantly, improve your quality of life.
An Expert Weighs In “Vestibular IR Goggles are a necessary tool to evaluate and treat certain types of dizziness. “Research shows that prostate MRI is the most powerful diagnostic tool we have, detecting up to 95% of clinically significant prostate cancer. For example, PSA blood test has a 21% sensitivity in detection of clinically significant disease, and random biopsy in some studies can only be as high as 50%. A landmark paper of level 1 data in a large trial recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed the power of prostate MRI and targeted biopsy in drastically reducing unnecessary surgery for low-grade disease. Interestingly, this study was performed at the same institute that proved screening mammography saves lives.”
James Busch, MD Radiologist PrimeImaging
Prostate MRI
Thanks to advanced MRI imaging, prostate conditions can be accurately identified.
Prostate cancer is a common cancer, affecting 13 in 100 American men. Powerful diagnostic technology has greatly benefited the early detection of prostate cancer, particularly magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI. This machine uses radio waves and magnets to generate images of the prostate. A 3T MRI utilizes especially powerful magnets to yield even clearer images than standard MRI scanners.
How Does It Work?
When receiving a prostate MRI, you will lay on your back on the patient table, which will then move inside the MRI machine. During the scan, an electric current passes through wire coils in the machine and creates a strong magnetic field. The coils send radio waves and produce computer-generated images of the prostate for doctors to analyze. A prostate MRI typically takes 30-45 minutes.
The Benefits of Prostate MRI
Noninvasive. Prostate MRIs are a noninvasive and painless diagnostic technology. Additionally, the 3T Open MRI is more spacious than standard systems, helping patients remain comfortable during the scan.
Higher diagnosis accuracy. Compared to other diagnostic methods, such as physical exams or ultrasounds, MRIs have the highest rate of detection. The detailed images of the prostate can reveal abnormalities that may otherwise be obscured.
Faster treatment planning. The 3T MRI is the fastest prostate MRI technology available and is up to twice as fast and more accurate as standard MRI systems. Its computer-generated images can be sent for immediate analysis, meaning doctors can move forward with developing and implementing a treatment plan, if required.

DentalMonitoring
AI-powered oral observations are revolutionizing orthodontic processes.
Orthodontic treatments such as braces and aligners require regular monitoring to ensure proper alignment. While these checkups typically take place every 4-8 weeks in office, DentalMonitoring, an advanced AI-powered platform, has made remote monitoring possible. Orthodontic teams can use this system to track their patients’ treatment weekly with fewer in-office visits needed.
How Does It Work?
DentalMonitoring utilizes a mobile application coupled with an attachment for the camera lens. During monitoring, a patient will take a scan weekly. These scans take 1-2 minutes, making it possible to scan virtually anywhere. The software, along with the orthodontic team, then analyzes the images to track treatment progress and ensure all appliances are functioning as intended. The patient will also receive progress transformation videos of their teeth throughout treatment.
The Benefits of DentalMonitoring Problem prevention. Weekly scans allow orthodontic teams to address oral hygiene, proper wear of aligners, and broken appliances in a more timely manner, leading to better results. The team can also pro-
vide encouragement and instruction to patients on cleaning and caring for appliances more frequently, resulting in the prevention of potential problems later in treatment.
Convenient communication. DentalMonitoring allows patients to easily communicate with their orthodontist. Using the app, patients can message, send photos of their teeth, schedule appointments, and receive treatment instructions.
Improved patient experience. The use of remote monitoring helps patients’ treatments move along efficiently, enhancing both patients’ results and experiences. It also reduces in-person visits, allowing patients more freedom in their schedule. Less time spent at appointments leads to less missed work, school, and activities.

Cereset
Rebalancing the brain using advanced brainwave technology can improve healthy responses to stressors.
The left and right hemispheres of the brain constantly communicate with each other, but physical and mental trauma can interrupt this healthy function. An imbalanced brain struggles to effectively manage stress. An imbalance on the left side can create a numbing effect, while on the right side, it stimulates a fight-orflight response. Cereset can confront either imbalance and situate the brain to remedy it.
How Does It Work?
Cereset is a noninvasive technology that produces brain-initiated sounds to help the brain’s hemispheres rebalance. First, highresolution brain frequency sensors record your brain’s rhythms. A synched algorithm then translates this information into a unique set of tones that are echoed to the brain. This familiar rhythm prompts the brain to relax, recognize its imbalance, and then reset. A healthily functioning brain can reduce stress, enhance learning, increase energy, and more.
The Benefits of Cereset
Restful sleep. Cereset may help the brain respond to sleep-related conditions such as insomnia and sleep apnea. A balanced brain can facilitate better sleep, as well as respond to chronic issues.
Emotional well-being . Imbalance caused by excessive emotional stress can create a cycle of unhealthy responses. Resetting the brain’s function with Cereset can benefit emotional health and promote calm, positive, and rational thinking.

“We are constantly looking for innovative technology to improve the quality of our treatment and the comfort and convenience for our patients. With digital impression technology we are able to achieve all of these objectives, so this was a home run investment for our practice. Patients love the digital impressions because we have eliminated the need for old, large trays full of ‘goo.’ Our team loves the system because it has improved the accuracy and quality of our clinical work.”
Michael Patterson, DDS Dentist Southside Dental
Digital Impressions
With digital 3D scanners, dental impressions are more efficient than ever.
If you are in need of dental work like crowns, dental implants, or dentures, your dentist will first take an impression of your teeth and mouth. Traditionally, this has involved biting down on dental putty to create a mold – an unpleasant experience for patients with sensitive teeth or a strong gag reflex. With digital impressions, however, your dentist can use a scanner to create a digital 3D image of your mouth.
How Does It Work?
Your dentist will use a wand-like scanning tool to capture all the details of the hard and soft tissues of your mouth. As the device scans, computer software creates a 3D replica of your mouth that is highly accurate and can be used for a variety of dental work. The entire process typically takes less than two minutes.
The Benefits of Digital Impressions
Efficiency. Unlike traditional dental impressions, the process for digital impressions is fast and efficient. The scanner can create an accurate 3D impression in under two minutes, much faster than waiting for dental putty to harden.
Accuracy. Your dentist will be able to monitor the impression as the device scans your mouth and ensure that everything is accurate and there are no errors in the scan. Furthermore, a retake of the scan is much easier than redoing a dental putty impression if something is not right.
Faster restoration. Whether you are going to the dentist for crowns, dentures, dental implants, or any other restoration, digital impressions expedite the process. While traditional impressions involve creating a physical cast of your teeth after the mold is set, a digital 3D image is ready to go immediately after the scan is complete.
A more enjoyable experience. Digital impressions eliminate the need to sit with unpleasant dental putty in your mouth. Many patients dislike dental putty either for the unpleasant taste, the way it triggers their gag reflex, or how it irritates their sensitive teeth.

ANNUAL TECH FOR YOUR HEALTH SECTION
Emsculpt Neo
Build muscle and burn fat with the help of advanced electromagnetic and radio frequency technology.
Emsculpt Neo is an innovative body sculpting treatment that uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic technology (HIFEM) and radio frequency (RF) energy to help recipients restore confidence in their body’s appearance and function. HIFEM technology prompts the targeted muscle to contract at intensities not achievable during a voluntary workout; this stress promotes the growth of muscle fibers. Simultaneously, RF heating causes fat cells to be damaged and naturally expelled from the body. On average, Emsculpt Neo can increase muscle volume by 25% and reduce fat content by 30%.
How Does It Work?
Receiving Emsculpt Neo treatment simply requires showing up and relaxing while the technology works. You will lie down comfortably as applicators are applied and begin to treat the target area – you may experience a heating sensation comparable to a hot stone massage. Each treatment lasts 30 minutes, with six sessions recommended for the best results.
The Benefits of Emsculpt Neo
No downtime necessary. Emsculpt Neo treatments are painless and noninvasive, making patient comfort
a priority. After treatment, patients can immediately return to daily activities with no recovery or downtime needed.
Multiple target areas. This treatment can target biceps, abdominals, glutes, thighs, calves, and more, making it an option for a wide variety of patient goals.
Two-in-one treatment. By delivering both muscle toning and fat reduction therapies in one treatment, Emsculpt Neo maximizes efficiency. Its short, 30-minute sessions make achieving results convenient for even those with the busiest of schedules.
An Expert Weighs In
“The most rewarding part of my job is contributing to our patients’ goals and watching them transform into a reality.”

ANNUAL TECH FOR YOUR HEALTH SECTION
Emsculpt Neo is the first and only non-invasive body contouring treatment that combines muscle building and fat elimination in a 30-minute session. High-intensity electromagnetic technology (HIFEM) is paired with radiofrequency energy to give you more fat reduction and muscle growth in less time and for less money!
Emsella uses the same HIFEM technology which sends thousands of subpraximal contractions to the pelvic floor muscles, simulating 20,000 Kegel exercises in one 30-minute session. It rehabilitates and strengthens the pelvic floor muscles, eliminating urge and stress incontinence. As with the Emsculpt Neo, six sessions are recommended for best results.

Donna Johnson Embraces Life’s Challenges & Opportunities
Ten years ago, I was about to turn 50 and, for the first time in my adult life, I did not have a job. My company had reorganized and, after 26 years, I was no longer needed. I knew the change was coming and had taken steps to prepare myself for the inevitable. However, I was stunned. Only six months before, I had gone through a divorce and now, I was without a career with a company that I had grown to love. To top it all off, I was experiencing the empty nest syndrome.
My identity had been shaken. If I was not a wife, a fulltime mother, and a career woman, who was I? To say I was at a loss would have been an understatement.
All I wanted to do was rest.
After three weeks of “resting,” I knew I needed to take action.
The Bible tells us that without a vision, the people will perish (Proverb 29:18). Through prayer and meditation, I quickly realized that I was not lost but merely at a crossroads. It was time to dream big and create a new vision of what I wanted my life to be. The years of experience and mentoring I had acquired throughout my career had provided me with a wealth of knowledge that could be applied in many directions. Not only that, but as a single, empty nester, I had the freedom to try new things without the risk of failing others. My biggest obstacle
was changing my own mindset. Several years before, I had jokingly adopted the saying that if your birthday ends in a zero, you get to get a new attitude. With 50 literally around the corner, it was time to adjust my attitude.
That proved to be easier said than done. I had to challenge myself daily to do something I had never done before – both personally and professionally. Naturally reserved, I had to learn to stop playing small so that I could spread my wings. I joined networking groups and became active in community organizations. I became involved in mentoring programs (as both a mentor and a mentee) and

started searching for new career opportunities. I learned to overcome my fear of heights and of open water by joining my children in new adventures such as ziplining and whitewater rafting. I began to embrace the challenges – and opportunities – that life brought my way, and in return, my life was blessed in ways that I could only imagine. I often say that I was not looking for a career in insurance, but God had other plans. After working
for several insurance companies in sales and corporate positions, I now enjoy a career as an exclusive agent for a local agency. Not only do I get to help people protect their families and their assets, but I’ve also achieved my lifelong dream of entrepreneurship. Along the way of rebuilding my career, I met my husband, Jeffery. We’ve been married for almost seven years, and we work together in the agency. People will

My journey over the last 10 years has had some incredible highs, but it has also had some extreme lows. In 2021, my daughter was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. She fought bravely for over seven months before making her transition – one month after her 34th birthday. Again, I was devastated. I struggle with the loss of my daughter daily, and I probably always will. However, as a family, we have worked together to keep her legacy of lifelong learning and helping others shining bright. A scholarship fund has been established in her name, and we are currently working on the second annual fundraiser that will allow us to provide financial assistance to Hamilton County high school students pursuing a degree in health sciences. Opportunities for growth will always occur. Sometimes they will present themselves as a daunting challenge. At other times, they come to us as some new adventure. Leaving a Legacy: The Practicalities of Wills and Estate Planning
Although it’s difficult to imagine leaving your loved ones behind, it’s an inevitability that we will all face at some point. It can be helpful to think of estate planning as simply another way of taking care of your family. Here, we talked with three experts
By Chelsea Risley
about why this is important, as well as practical ways to prepare.
Stephany Pedigo, attorney at Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel, views preparing for your death as an act of service to your family.
“In taking the time and effort to plan your estate, you relieve stress and show love to your family by clearly letting them know your wishes regarding healthcare directives and displaying that you planned for their financial welfare in a will or trust,” she says.
72 healthscopemag.com CAREER & FINANCE
To help minimize difficult conversations or possible conflict among family members – and lessen estate and inheritance taxes – it’s best to begin making arrangements early. Wills are certainly important, but only a part of estate planning, which also encompasses beneficiaries and trusts as well as healthcare directives and power of attorney documents. These crucial documents define your wishes in the event that you become medically unable to make decisions, and they appoint people to carry them out.
Julie Davis, an advisor at Raymond James Financial Services, emphasizes the importance of naming beneficiaries and regularly reviewing them. “This includes beneficiaries of both qualified and non-qualified assets, whether invested or held in cash. Oftentimes clients forget to do this on 401(k)s, life insurance policies, small bank accounts, and other miscellaneous assets, or after a life-changing event, like the death of a spouse or a divorce,” she explains.
Without a strategy in place, your estate – and possibly the guardianship of your children – may be decided in probate court, which can be a long and stressful process. As Bobby Futch, an advisor at Patton Albertson & Miller, explains, being proactive is crucial to help guide your family. “Dying without a will can leave your assets subject to the intestacy laws of the state in which you live,” he says. “These laws can lead to asset distributions inconsistent with your wishes.” Depending on the size of your estate, it may be best to enlist the help of a professional to
make sure you’re covering everything you need to. In the meantime, here are a few tips to help you draft your will.
• Make a list of all of your assets. This includes property, vehicles, jewelry, furniture, bank and retirement accounts, etc. Make another list of your debts – mortgages, loans, and credit cards. Indicate account numbers, passwords, and locations of paperwork to help make it easier for someone else to handle these affairs.
• Select guardians and an executor. Choose someone you trust to serve as guardians for your kids and/or pets, and then choose a backup or two, just in case. This eliminates any confusion, and it may help your children feel more secure if they know they would be going to a safe place. You’ll also need to choose an executor, someone who will be responsible for executing your wishes if you prefer not to use your attorney.
• Make copies. You should make at least three copies of your will and associated documents – one to keep for yourself stored in a safe place, one for your partner, and one for your attorney and/or executor. Make sure all the copies are prepared and notarized according to your state’s laws.
• Revise your plan. Don’t forget to make changes to your plan after major life events, like getting married, divorced, or having a child. Otherwise, you should update it every few years.

Setting Yourself Up to Enjoy Time Off
From battling burnout to making memories with loved ones, taking time off is an important part of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. In fact, studies show that vacations can reduce anxiety and depression, improve physical health, and even boost productivity on the job. But when stress from the office tags along, vacations can become more of a burden than a blessing. Luckily, the tips below can help you prepare to enjoy your time off to the fullest.
By Catherine Smith
74 healthscopemag.com
MENTAL HEALTH
Before You Leave
Prioritize Tasks: Take some time to evaluate your projects and prioritize any deadlines that would conflict with your vacation. Your to-do list may be long, but it is better to focus on things that need to be done rather than everything you want to get done.
Plan Ahead: Establishing a plan of action is critical if you want to avoid panicked phone calls. Clearly communicating the status of any pending projects and establishing a plan for their contingency will relieve stress for you and your colleagues alike.
Fill Everyone In: If you work closely with people outside of your organization, like clients or other stakeholders, telling them about your vacation ahead of time and letting them know who will be handling things while you’re away will help to reassure them that their projects will not be put on the back burner. In the weeks leading up to your trip, cc’ing a secondary point of contact on any emails will help keep your colleague in the know and make for a more seamless transition.
While You’re Away
Set It and Forget It: It’s not easy to leave your inbox unattended, but setting an automatic email response with an out-of-office message can help put your mind at ease. Be sure to provide a secondary point of contact in the message so you can rest assured that any pressing issues can be handled without taking you out of vacation mode.
Stay Present: If you find your mind drifting back to the office, take a moment to practice deep breathing or go for a walk to help shake off any anxiety. Remember that taking this time to decompress will improve not only your personal well-being, but your motivation and job performance as well.
Maintain Boundaries: Even the best-laid plans sometimes go awry, and you may end up getting calls, texts, or emails about workplace issues. If you absolutely must respond, focus on directives that allow your coworkers to solve the problem without you. Otherwise, simply stating that you will handle it when you’re back in the office is a courteous way to remind others that you are unavailable.
Once You’re Back
Returning to work after a vacation can be overwhelming, so it’s best to be intentional about shifting back into work mode. On day one, dedicate some time in the morning to catch up on emails and reorient yourself. It can also help to schedule a meeting for coworkers to bring you up to speed on anything that happened while you were away. Overall, easing back into the swing of things can help you maintain the boost of motivation that comes after a break.

Ginny Kelly
For Ginny Kelly, health and wellness have always been a vital part of her life. With a dad who was a collegiate football coach and a career as a tennis professional after college, Kelly is no stranger to the world of fitness. But while fitness may have once looked like staying in peak physical shape and winning matches, now it’s a way to connect with friends and family and show up for those who matter most.
What is your approach to wellness, and how has that changed over time?
Both my parents were always very active, and with my dad having been a coach at Ole Miss, a disciplined exercise ethic was just ingrained in me. I’ve always heard that if you don’t take care of yourself, you cannot take care of anyone else, and I believe it! I exercise in some form every day. Whether it’s walking, running, or lifting weights, I need the mental health boost that activity gives me. With any activity I do, I also try to do it with a friend. I think the social aspects of exercise are often overlooked and underestimated. Some of my closest relationships are with the people I train with, and I appreciate the accountability those relationships provide. As I have gotten older, however, I also realize how vital rest is. I have always liked to go 90 to nothing, but now I know I’ll crash and burn if I don’t get enough rest to recover properly.
What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?
Spending one-on-one time with my husband and getting outside with friends. I listen
to a podcast called “SmartLess” when I’m out walking. It’s always sure to bring plenty of laughs, and that’s exactly what I need to get the day going.
What are the traits you most value in yourself?
A sense of humor, creativity, and resilience.
What are some of your current goals, and what are you doing to work toward them?
My main goal is to get back to my normal exercise regimen, as I’ve had two foot surgeries in the past two years and haven’t been able to trail run. I’d like to add more trail running events to grow my business, Bad Beard Events. To accomplish these goals, I will rely on a slow and steady approach with the help of family and friends. This won’t be easy for me because I am not good with slow and steady, but that’s why my friends and family are involved!
How do you approach emotional well-being?
I love being alone in nature and working through what’s going on in my life. I also read many
books on meditation. My current favorite is “Meditations on SelfLove” by Laurasia Mattingly.
What does your daily routine look like?
I am an early bird, so I make coffee and have some quiet time before sunrise. I go for cryotherapy and red light therapy after coffee and then try to get a walk in before work or on my lunch break. I also strength train twice a week. Weeknights are a little hectic, but I try to cook dinner at least three nights a week and am typically in bed by 9:30.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
My parents taught me that no task is beneath me. I will do whatever I have to do to get things done.
How do you encourage health and wellness within your family?
My husband is my best friend and partner in everything I do. We encourage each other to get outside, to reset when we are feeling overwhelmed, and to talk through all the good and bad that happens throughout the day.

MEET OUR MODEL
What do you find the most rewarding?
Watching others meet their goals. Owning a race series, I have the pleasure of watching people evolve as they get into trail running. There is no joy bigger than seeing people challenge themselves and the smiles on their faces when they finish a race.
Monique Goodwin
On a warm Sunday morning in August, I woke up at 6 a.m. tired and short of breath. I thought it was the aftermath of spending the previous day at an amusement park with my 11-year-old nephew, Dallas. Being out of breath was not new to me because I was usually exhausted after completing household tasks and walking short distances. Something was different this particular morning, but it wasn’t drastic enough for me to consider an emergency room visit. I wanted to wait until the walk-in clinic opened that morning. My sister, however, with whom I lived, encouraged me to go to the emergency room so I could be checked out sooner. I honestly thought it was a possible case of pneumonia.
At the emergency room, there was another wave of COVID-19 cases, and only patients were allowed in the back until their test results came back negative. My sister, Stacy, decided to take the short drive back home until my results were in. I called her twice from the emergency room with updates. The ER found fluid in my lungs and diagnosed me with pneumonia.
Just moments later, things took a turn for the worst. The next call Stacy received was from a doctor asking a series of questions about my health. He stated that I had to be emergently intubated because my breathing had stopped. I was admitted to the ICU, stayed on a ventilator for several days, and was finally diagnosed with congestive heart failure. When I eventually opened my eyes, I can remember my sister telling me not to pull at the tubes and explaining to me where I was. I could not fully comprehend what had transpired, but I understood I was in the hospital. I would remain hospitalized for one week. I remember being taken off the ventilator and being so relieved and thankful that I was able to do so.
By the time I was released from the hospital, I was able to comprehend more
of what had happened to me and my diagnosis. I was in disbelief! However, acceptance came thereafter, and I was able to work toward getting better and healthier. I was under a cardiologist’s care, joined a cardiac rehabilitation program, took mandated time off work, and was put on medicine. In December 2021, my heart was still functioning at a low percentage, and the decision was made to put in a defibrillator and pacemaker. I was only 45 years old at the time.
I now realize what I had experienced leading up to my hospitalization were heart disease symptoms that I rationalized away. I thought my shortness of breath and fatigue were ramifications of getting older, an increase in weight, and just being out of shape. So, if there is one thing that I can stress to others, and women especially, it’s to listen to your body and the signs that it relays. Walking from your driveway to your front door should not knock the wind out of you. If so, it is worth having a conversation with your doctor.
Today, my heart is functioning closer to normal, and I have made the necessary changes in my life to be healthier. I work out more, eat healthier, and I choose not to stress over much. I am blessed with supportive, caring, and loving family and friends. I am so grateful to be alive today.

Smile On
By Christina Davenport
It’s common for beauty ideals to come and go, but one that has stood the test of time is teeth whitening. Discoloration is just a natural part of life, and there is a myriad of ways to tackle the issue. If you’re on the hunt for some simple solutions to achieve a brighter, whiter smile, look no further. Here are a few easy tips to help!
Maintain proper hygiene.
Good dental habits can go a long way in making sure your teeth are resisting stains. Brushing twice daily and flossing regularly are crucial to maintaining good dental hygiene. You should also replace your toothbrush every three months so that your bristles aren’t becoming worn down. Having a fresh toothbrush and flossing those hard-to-reach areas will help prevent stains between the teeth.
Limit added sugar and acidic foods.
In addition to the more obvious culprits, having a diet full of added sugar and acidic foods could be doing you a disservice when it comes to the color of your teeth. Acidic foods – such as berries, tomatoes, and oranges – can erode tooth enamel, making it easier for teeth to stain. In addition, foods high in sugar can interact with the naturally occurring bacteria in your mouth and produce acid, which again, can cause you to lose enamel and allow your teeth to yellow.
Avoid foods and drinks that stain.
We know. This one isn’t much fun, but if you’re looking to make a big impact on stained teeth, the best way is to avoid the foods and beverages that caused the staining in the first place. While not everyone’s teeth are discolored due to their diets, for many people it’s a leading cause. Common offenders are coffee, red wine, cola, tea, fruit juice, berries, tomato or soy sauce, curry, and balsamic vinegar. If eliminating these items is out of the question, try limiting them, rinsing your mouth with water after consuming, or using a straw for liquids.
Consider whitening products.
If you’re looking for a faster approach, there is no shortage of whitening products and services on the market. The safest solution is any service that is provided by your dentist, and these procedures typically mean access to higher prescription or more concentrated products. In addition, teeth whitening kits, strips, and toothpastes can all be purchased over the counter, and laser teeth whitening can also help remove staining. Experts suggest that your whitening toothpaste contains at least 1350 ppm (parts per million) of fluoride to make sure levels are sufficient enough to prevent tooth decay.
Pick your colors carefully.
Another less obvious way to make your teeth appear whiter is to consider the colors you’re wearing in your clothes and makeup. In general, the whiter your clothing is, the less white your teeth will appear by comparison, so choosing off-white shades will work wonders. When it comes to lipsticks, opt for colors that have a blue undertone – not yellow – as a way to make your smile appear whiter.

Angie,
I’ve reflected a lot on the strong female leaders who shaped my career in some shape or form. I have been blessed to work with many female leaders during my career who exemplify many of the traits that I now want to pour into others that I have the privilege to mentor myself.
Being surrounded by strong female leaders throughout my career has taught me a lot about the importance of not just a diverse team, but a diverse leadership team, too. It’s something I’ve always felt was non-negotiable when it comes to building an inclusive environment where everyone can feel safe and has a sense of belonging.
You are a leader who is admired by all who work and cross paths with you. You have a deep understanding of how to establish connection with any person or audience, but most importantly, you show your gratitude and appreciation for the people you work with. You are a pro at eliminating tension amongst other leaders and encouraging collaboration. I’ve watched you take steps that others would have found challenging and difficult to ensure that the right people made it onto teams and were supported and empowered along the way. You are tireless in your support and empathy for those you lead and serve.
The ability to be vulnerable, nurturing, and when necessary, assertive in one’s leadership style is the hallmark of a fantastic leader.
Thank you for LEADING the way!

Dear Toccora,
I want to first start by thanking you! Thank you for your encouragement and support over the years. Thank you for showing me how much hard work truly pays off. Representation is important and needed for women of color, and you so graciously embody that. You are truly an amazing role model. Your tenacity, passion, and dedication are unmatched. I sometimes just sit back in amazement of all your accomplishments and the way you somehow manage to juggle the many hats you wear: CEO, wife, friend, mentor, and the list goes on. You are so genuine in everything you do. You push me to challenge myself and you believe in me, and for that I am grateful. If I can be half the woman you are, I know I will be okay in this world. Thank you for always advocating, challenging, and cheerleading for me. You have really brightened my professional career and made me a better person. It is truly an honor to be in your presence and witness your greatness. Thank you for caring about my growth professionally and personally the way you do. Continue to shine, and thank you for making a difference in my life.
With love,

Cheerleader, mentor, comedian, leader, teacher, friend – it’s rare to find all these things bundled into one human, but somehow you make it look easy.
You’re a force for your people, making sure they feel valued and supported through thick and thin. You’re a guide through new territory when people feel lost or uncertain. You’re a hug for the discouraged. You’re entertainment in the mundane. You’re consistent in the midst of chaos. You’re authentic in a room full of masks. I could keep going, but I think you get the point.
They say not all heroes wear capes, and I know you would never draw that much attention to yourself, but you’re one of my heroes. You’ve taught me what humble leadership looks like, and you embody all the best qualities of a leader. You’ve shown me what it looks like to be a good mentor regardless of a title, and a good friend regardless of age or life stage. Thank you for being entirely you. Every day. No matter what.
I hope you know how incredibly awesome you are, but here’s a quick reminder just in case you forgot.

Tammy,
Around mid-January of last year I thought I was simply getting a new black lab puppy from a friend of my mom’s. Little did I know my life would soon change for the better. I gained a new best friend/mentor and someone who constantly inspires me. Whether it be our past experiences, our overflowing love for black Labradors, or our joy in hosting, I knew we’d be great friends immediately. You not only inspire me, but you are constantly encouraging to me through your cards that somehow appear exactly when I need encouragement the most.
You have welcomed me into your home for family dinners, helped me with cake decorating, and invited me to learn how to help train my puppy. You and Dan have invested so much time not only into my life, but into my sweet little puppy, Magnolia, as well.
You have truly inspired me to be the best version of myself. You’ve encouraged me to get back into Bible study and have helped me to regain a feeling of selfimprovement after tough life situations.
Your love for others is clearly evident through the work you do at a local nonprofit and the time you pour into other local women’s and teenage girls’ ministries. I am so thankful for our friendship and know for a fact that God brought us together in this phase of life for a reason!

Families Who Travel Together, Stay Together
Local Luxury Travel Planners Offer Expertise on Multigenerational Vacations
By Chelsea Risley
One of the biggest benefits of any vacation, whether it’s with your immediate or extended family, is the opportunity to get out of your normal routine, and as Amber Dixon and Jessica Crutchfield of Limitless Destinations explain, “Exploring the world together creates familial bonds and core memories.”
These trips, no matter your destination, allow you to get to know each other in new ways – especially children, who may see adults outside of their caregiving roles for the first time. “Multigenerational travel offers a rich experience when you explore new cultures and discover new passions with the people you love the most. Who knew that Nana was a great salsa dancer? Or that Uncle David could cook a mean ratatouille?” Dixon and Crutchfield elaborate.
Amazing benefits aside, planning these trips can be tricky. The more people you
invite, the more needs and preferences there are to accommodate. You’ll need to be mindful of choosing accessible activities for the youngest and oldest members of the family as well as dietary requirements for everyone.
Jenny Park of Wild & Precious Travel suggests adventurous families try “bucket list” trips like luxury safaris that are “both educational and exhilarating, and logistics are handled by the local guides and lodge staff, which reduces the need for group decision-making.”
For families that are more interested in relaxing, Park suggests a luxury all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean or Riviera Maya – “these resorts offer a range of dining and activity options along with excellent kids clubs.”
Of course, it’s doable to plan your own trip, but you may find the whole experience more enjoyable and stress-free if you choose a professional to help make all your vacation dreams come true.
Tried-and-True Travel Tips
Limitless Destinations
Check your passport expiration date — many destinations require six months or longer validity after your travel dates. Renew or apply for a new passport as soon as possible to avoid last-minute travel stress.
Wild & Precious Travel
Always have your transportation from the airport to your hotel booked before your arrival! Particularly with international travel, some arrival areas can be quite chaotic, and some destinations do not allow Uber and have limited public transit.

Cauliflower Power
Cauliflower has recently gained a lot of steam, and with good reason – it’s versatile and absolutely packed with nutrients. This cruciferous vegetable is also a good source of choline, which is crucial for brain development and not found in many other foods. It’s perhaps most well-known as a weight-loss-friendly food because it’s primarily water and very high in fiber.
The options for preparing cauliflower are endless – try it as a gluten-free pizza crust, an alternative to rice or mashed potatoes, or as steaks or “wings.” These locals offer creative and delicious ideas for cooking with this fantastic veggie.

7 Signs You
Have a
Nutrient Deficiency
By Mary Beth Wallace
Whether due to allergies, accessibility, time constraints, or food preferences, it’s not always easy to eat a balanced diet – which, unfortunately, can lead to nutrient deficiencies. Even if you are meeting your daily quota of fruits and veggies, how do you know for sure that you’re getting enough of the vitamins and minerals you need?
Being able to recognize the signs of a nutrient deficiency can help you adjust your diet accordingly or seek outside help. Here, we’re covering some of the most common signs to watch out for.
Fatigue
Fatigue – defined as the constant feeling of tiredness or lack of energy – can be attributed to a number of health problems, making it one of the sneakiest signs of a nutrient deficiency. Yet chronic fatigue should never be ignored! One of the first things to try is upping your iron intake, as iron is a key component in ensuring your red blood cells get enough oxygen. Foods like lean red meat, seafood, legumes, and dark, leafy greens can give your iron levels a boost and help fight fatigue.
Changes in hair quality
Physical changes, especially to your hair, skin, and nails, can point to nutrient deficiencies as well. If you’re experiencing an increase in hair breakage or thinning, there could be one of several nutrients you’re missing: specifically, folic acid (also known as vitamin B9), vitamins B6 or B12, or iron. Each of these nutrients helps maintain a healthy blood supply that transports oxygen to your hair and scalp.
Mood shifts
If you’re noticing an uptick in mood swings and have ruled out common culprits such as hormone shifts and PMS, a diet low in omega-3 fatty acids could be to blame. Omega-3s play a critical role in building brain cells. To get more of this nutrient, try adding fatty fish – including salmon, trout, and sardines – or nuts and seeds to your plate.
Bleeding gums
While bleeding gums might be a sign of gingivitis, or gum disease, they could be telling you to consume more vitamin C. Research suggests that even a mild vitamin C deficiency can affect your oral health and cause gum bleeding. But don’t fret! Vitamin C can be found in plenty of foods ranging from bell peppers and broccoli to strawberries and citrus fruits.
Vision changes
You’ve probably heard that eating more vitamin A can improve your vision, but did you know that vitamins C and E are also crucial for good eye health? When you are low in these vitamins, you’re missing out on protective antioxidants that work to keep your eyes in tip-top shape – and it could eventually lead to diseases like agerelated macular degeneration and cataracts. Mangos contain both vitamin C and E, while nuts, seeds, and certain oils contain the most vitamin E per serving.
Muscle spasms
Muscle spasms and cramps that accompany other symptoms of nutrient deficiency, like fatigue and tingling in the arms, legs, and feet, are usually an indicator that you aren’t getting enough calcium. Calcium plays a huge role in how your muscles function, as well as your blood vessels and some hormones. Dairy is a go-to source of calcium for many, but non-dairy foods such as black beans, leafy greens, and sardines are great sources, too.
Bone pain
Another common deficiency in the United States is vitamin D, which can cause symptoms including muscle pain, muscle weakness, and bone pain. Fortunately, there are two ways to get more vitamin D in your system: diet and increased sun exposure. Vitamin D supplements are also routinely prescribed to help get vitamin D levels in check.
If you’re concerned you may have a nutrient deficiency, talk to your doctor. A quick finger-prick test can assess the levels of different vitamins and minerals in your blood, clueing you in to any deficiencies. Your doctor may recommend a supplement plan, or refer you to a registered dietician to discuss your diet.

The day Tim Price’s grandson took his hand to lead him out of Siskin Hospital, after six months as an inpatient. Tim, his family and his entire treatment team, who lined his pathway to cheer him home, all cried tears of joy. Despite arriving to Siskin Hospital completely paralyzed from the neck down due to Guillain-Barre, Tim WALKED back out the front doors.
A miracle.
Yes.
And one that wouldn’t have happened without the specialized technology at Siskin Hospital.
Tim’s team of therapists, nurses and physicians used every piece of technology available in their inpatient facility and medical model tness center to ensure he was able to regain the skills he had lost. From a lift that transferred Tim from place to place before he could even move, to various technologies that helped him regain balance, take his rst steps again, bring life back to his arms, learn rst to swallow and then to eat, & much more, Tim’s Siskin Hospital “family” was able to match their passion to get him back to life, with tools to make it a reality.
