For many women, there is a temptation to always put others first. In their households, friend groups, and communities at large, women are focusing on the needs of others often before their own. But as we know, it’s impossible to pour from an empty cup.

In this fall issue of HealthScope® magazine, our annual Women’s Health issue, we want to encourage women to prioritize their health so that they can more easily reach their goals, whatever they may be. First up, our feature “Is It Eczema or Psoriasis?” details two common skin conditions and what sets them apart. In “Beyond the Baby Blues” we dive into the specifics of postpartum anxiety and how they differ from the more talked about postpartum depression, while “The Truth About Lung Cancer” sheds light on what is the third most common type of cancer but also the most deadly.

We hope that you also take time to review our annual “Women’s Health” section, which continues to explore issues that affect women such as peripheral artery disease, urinary incontinence, and more. Another mainstay of our fall issue, “Meet Our Doctors” shines a spotlight on a few of our city’s talented and dedicated healthcare providers that span a variety of specialties. In “Beautifully You!” you’ll learn more about some of the area’s skilled cosmetic specialists

who set out every day to help their clients look and feel their best. In addition to these informative articles, we have plenty more to discover including tips on how to ask for a raise or choose a therapist that’s right for you, different ways to wear a hair scarf, and guidance on setting boundaries as a parent. Much loved sections “Her Story” and “Inspired” feature local ladies who are motivating themselves and those around them to do great things.

Last but certainly not least, check out our interview with cover model Julie Edwards as she talks about navigating life as a recent empty nester. Learn more about how she cultivates balance and happiness in everyday life. We hope that you find this fall issue of HealthScope® magazine to be informative and uplifting and that it inspires you to champion your own health as much as the health of those around you.

Blessings always,

QMy teenage daughter was recently diagnosed with autism. I’ve noticed that lately her workload has increased, and she doesn’t seem to have energy for activities

A. It’s important to recognize that being an autistic individual comes with a lot of burnout just from having to exist in a neurotypical world with neurotypical expectations. Having to mask all day, taking in multiple sensory inputs, managing executive functioning impacts, etc. It can all build up and feel pretty overwhelming. Adding on increased academic expectations only increases that burnout. Make sure that she has time when there are no expectations placed on her, where she can be alone and do the things that relax and replenish her. She may need help identifying ways to unwind, but giving her permission to unmask and decompress is crucial for her mental health. You can also help her develop a strategy for tackling her academics in a way that feels less overwhelming. Maybe she needs to break things down into manageable steps and built-in breaks. Taking some of that pressure off will help mitigate burnout.

Q. I’ve been dealing with enlarged pores on my face for years now. I’ve tried everything on the market, but I’m not seeing great results. Are there any treatments that could help?

A. Enlarged pores can be frustrating to deal with but with the advancements in aesthetics there are many solutions. Radio frequency microneedling and chemical peels are all fantastic options that can help minimize pore size. It’s also important to find the right medicalgrade skincare to protect and increase the longevity of your results. Cora

Q. I’m getting married in just over a year, but I’m having a hard time bringing myself to do the necessary planning. I love my partner and I’m excited about our wedding, but I feel paralyzed by my anxiety –it’s very frustrating. Do you have any advice?

A. Congratulations! Planning a wedding can be so fun, but it can also be super stressful! When we think about anxiety, we want to think of it as a ‘messenger’ of some kind to let us know that things feel off or misaligned. I would first ask myself, ‘what are the things about this that are causing my anxiety?’ Am I trying to please too many people? Have I taken too much on? Do I feel responsible for the feelings of others? Are there things in your wedding planning that you can delegate to other people? Are there tasks that are actually not something you want to do but feel pressure to partake in? When you visualize the type of wedding you want, what does it feel like? Can you allow yourself to make choices based on what feels good for you and your fiancé and not focus on what you think other people want? Catie

she used to enjoy. I’m worried she may be experiencing burnout – any advice?

Q. I recently noticed a sore on my 73-year-old mother’s foot. She told me that it has been there for a while and doesn’t seem to be getting better, so I’m worried. Is this a normal part of aging or a sign of something serious?

A. Anytime there is a wound on the foot that is not healing normally, this should be addressed by visiting the primary care doctor or podiatric specialist. This condition is commonly caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), and if left untreated can eventually lead to limb amputation. The most severe form of PAD is critical limb ischemia which causes pain in the foot at night and sometimes during the day, wounds that don’t heal on the foot or

toes, and even gangrene formation. Often the foot can be saved with early detection and intervention, and vascular surgeons can use noninvasive ultrasound testing to determine the location and severity of the blocked arteries. Through minimally invasive surgical techniques, many of the arteries can be repaired with ballooning or angioplasty, stenting, and even removal of the plaques by atherectomy.

Meet Our Experts

A. The first step to keeping school-age children healthy is to ensure that they are up-to-date on routine visits with their primary care provider as well as vaccines, which provide protection against many serious infections. A well-rounded diet including lots of fruits and vegetables together with adequate sleep help the immune system fight infections. Children in elementary school should aim for 9 to 12 hours of sleep per night. We cannot completely prevent common viral infections, but there are steps we can take to decrease spread. It is helpful to teach our children good handwashing and how to cover their mouths when coughing and sneezing. Children should stay home from school for fever, vomiting, diarrhea, signs of severe illness, and as recommended by your child’s doctor. As always, you should contact your child’s doctor if you have questions. Wishing your child a happy and healthy school year!

PROVIDING LONG-TERM CARE

In his first year practicing independently, Dr. Elliott Carter hopes to be a beacon for his patients throughout their lives. “I love being able to provide both true primary, longitudinal care while also being able to offer surgical intervention for complex issues,” he says. “OB/GYN is one of the only fields in which you can care for a patient for their entire life but also intervene when problems arise.” In addition to providing long-term care, Dr. Carter also hopes that he is able to make patients feel comfortable, so they feel free to share any questions or concerns, thus receiving the best care possible. “I don’t come from a family of physicians, but I have wanted to be a doctor from an early age,” explains Dr. Carter. “I think it is because I get to combine my love of science with a profession in which I can help as many people as possible.”

Erlanger Women’s Health

What sets your practice apart?

1I try to provide a relaxed, casual practice environment where patients feel comfortable during what is typically a dreaded appointment.

2

What would you consider to be your main strengths?

I would say that my ability to connect with anyone and everyone is my greatest strength as a physician. I have never met a stranger! I work hard to get to know my patients and make sure everyone feels heard and understood.

3

What do you see as the most exciting new development for your profession?

I think advances in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques will continue to improve patients’ surgical care and enhance recovery after a procedure.

4

What accolades mean the most to you?

My Golden Apple Award from 2022 is the most meaningful because it was voted upon by the University of Tennessee medical students for excellence in medical education. I am passionate about both medical student and resident education, so it was amazing for that to be recognized.

5

What is your best advice for patients?

Nothing makes an OB/GYN uncomfortable! Please share anything and everything that you think may be relevant to your complaint. I am there to listen and try my best to help.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILIES

Coming from a long line of educators, some might be surprised to find Dr. William Bates in the healthcare industry. “During my senior year of high school, my life dramatically changed course when I suddenly felt called into medicine by the Lord,” explains Dr. Bates. He then went on to receive a Rymer Scholarship from Lee University before eventually going on to receive his osteopathic medicine degree. Now practicing for nearly two decades, Dr. Bates enjoys getting to fulfill his life’s calling while also helping patients and their families, not only physically, but also emotionally and spiritually.

DR. WILLIAM BATES III, DO

Hospice of Chattanooga and CHI Memorial Family Practice

Associates Ooltewah

What’s the key to making a great first impression?

1Being honest with patients and families and showing them that we are here to help. It’s important to give patients and families the confidence that, whatever comes up, we will be here for them.

2

What do you see as the most exciting new development for your profession?

The recognition by patients and the government that the foundation for a strong healthcare system starts with primary care.

3

Why have you chosen this field of specialty?

The scope and breadth of family medicine are unique amongst the medical specialties. It is a constant challenge as no two patients are alike. Being a hospice physician is a natural progression from family medicine as both areas of medicine are built on relationships with patients and families.

4

What would you consider to be your main strengths?

I would say determination. I am driven to find the answer to questions that I have or concerns that patients present. That determination has served my patients well over the years.

5

What accolades mean the most to you?

A simple thank you is what matters more than anything to myself and honestly to most physicians.

CHAMPIONING A HOLISTIC APPROACH

After struggling with her own illness and receiving a holistic approach from her primary care doctor, Dr. Hannah West felt called to become a doctor herself. “I felt drawn to provide the same holistic and compassionate approach with determination to help others not only fight disease but get to the root of the illness,” says Dr. West. Today, Dr. West is an osteopathic doctor with Erlanger Primary Care – NorthShore where she is part of a small but mighty team. “Our practice is a small office setting with two providers, one physician, and one nurse practitioner,” explains Dr. West. “This small setting allows for a more intimate environment where patients can feel comfortable.” In addition to having her patients feel comfortable, Dr. West always focuses on the intersection of mental and physical health and strives to help patients advocate for themselves.

DR. HANNAH WEST, DO

What do you love most about your profession?

1I love developing relationships with my patients whereby they can learn to trust and depend on me for a holistic approach to their care. I especially love when I can treat multiple members of the same family.

2

Why have you chosen this field of specialty?

Family medicine is often the first contact a patient has and inherently requires knowledge in a multitude of fields. I enjoy staying up to date on a variety of things but find prevention to be of utmost importance.

3

What would you consider to be your main strengths?

I consider myself to have a good bedside manner and clinical acumen. I am also a good listener and thorough. I know my limits and am always willing to dig for answers and ask for help when needed.

4

What is one of your happiest professional moments?

One of my happiest professional moments was being chosen by my colleagues to serve as chief resident during my final year of residency training. Their belief in my leadership motivated me to foster autonomy and improve the resident training experience.

5

What is your philosophy when it comes to the care of your patients?

My approach involves making a difference in my patient’s life by listening, understanding their needs, keeping open communication, providing compassion, and most of all educating my patients so they have a healthier life.

WORKING TOGETHER AS A TEAM

When Dr. Deanna Brown reflects on nearly a decade of being a dermatologist, a few special moments stick out. “One of the happiest moments of my career was when I opened Four Bridges Dermatology,” she says. “It was the product of many years of hard work and delayed gratification.”

Part of what makes Four Bridges Dermatology special, in Dr. Brown’s opinion, is that it is owned by three board-certified, female doctors. In addition to the doctors is a friendly and talented support staff that helps the office run like a well-oiled machine. “My practice would not exist without my staff! Every team member performs a crucial role to keep the schedule flowing and keep patients happy,” Dr. Brown explains. “I love working with this team and am so proud of how far we’ve come in just one year.”

DR. DEANNA BROWN, MD, FAAD

I am empathetic and a good listener. I have an artistic eye plus a thorough knowledge of facial anatomy that is beneficial for cosmetic treatments.

4 What is your philosophy when it comes to the care of your patients?

I want to work with my patients to improve their quality of life and self-confidence. I show them how to incorporate sustainable changes into their lives to help their skin and overall well-being.

COMMUNICATING COMPLEX INFORMATION

For the last decade, Dr. Jennifer Mirza has been leaning on a host of communication skills to help her patients understand their diagnoses. Called to medicine from the drive to help people feel better, Dr. Mirza began gravitating toward cardiology during her internship. “I loved the imaging studies such as ultrasounds of the heart and stress tests. It just clicked with me,” she says. Now, Dr. Mirza is able to combine the analytical allure of imaging with her desire to help people feel their best in what she notes has been a highly rewarding career. “In general, my happiest moments during my career have been when I see patients finally understand what is going on with their heart health and make positive changes to improve their longterm health,” she says.

DR. JENNIFER MIRZA, DO

Erlanger Cardiology

What sets your practice apart?

1I love building relationships with my patients. Part of building relationships is communicating. I strive to communicate complex cardiac disease processes and information in a way that helps my patients understand and feel comfortable.

2

What do you love most about your profession?

All of the advances and new treatments in valvular heart disease and heart failure. It is an exciting time to be practicing cardiology because of the new options we have to help patients feel better and live longer.

3

What is your best advice for patients?

Stay active! One of the most important things as we age is to remain as active as we can. Start a walking routine. Join a class that gets you moving. Dance in your living room!

4

What do you see as the most exciting new development for your profession?

Percutaneous treatment of valvular heart disease. This is an option for “fixing” a heart valve that is not functioning properly without having open heart surgery. It is not appropriate for everyone, but it gives patients an option that otherwise would not be able to be treated.

5

What is your philosophy when it comes to the care of your patients?

I treat my patients as I would want my family to be treated.

STAYING ON TOP OF THE LATEST TECHNOLOGIES

Dr. Collier King has never shied away from a challenge. Motivated by the gratification that comes with solving complex problems, it’s no wonder he found his way to the radiology field. “A radiologist is a true ‘doctor’s doctor’ and as a consultant, I have to speak the language of surgeons, neurologists, oncologists, and others,” explains Dr. King. “Becoming a radiologist has allowed me to make diagnoses, help guide clinicians, and occasionally make a completely unexpected finding which changes the management dramatically.” In addition to making diagnoses and helping not just patients but also other healthcare providers, Dr. King also enjoys the radiology field for its ever-changing techniques and technologies.

What do you love most about your profession?

1Radiology is a unique medical specialty that touches all aspects of healthcare. The knowledge and skills of radiologists are essential for diagnosing and treating diseases, and the field is constantly evolving to meet the needs of patients. Knowing I am an integral part of a patient’s care brings me great satisfaction.

2What do you see as the most exciting new development for your profession?

PET and CT scans are rapidly developing, and new, more targeted and powerful tracers and applications are being developed all the time.

3

Why did you choose to become a doctor?

I grew up in a medical family. My dad was an orthopedic surgeon, and my mom was a nurse practitioner. I was naturally influenced by them, but I also grew fascinated by the human body and how it works. I realized that I could use my skills and knowledge to improve the lives of others.

4

Each day brings new challenges and opportunities for radiologists. They must stay up-to-date on the latest imaging techniques and technologies, and they must be able to interpret complex images quickly and accurately.”

Why have you chosen this field of specialty?

Radiology is a cerebral and analytical field. I am constantly solving problems and using my training on a daily basis. I also enjoy interventional image-guided procedures and face-to-face patient care.

5

What is your philosophy when it comes to the care of your patients?

One of the best pieces of advice I received in medical school was to treat every patient as if they were my own family. This means providing them with the same level of care and compassion that I would want for my own loved ones. When faced with a difficult decision, I ask myself, “What would I want done if this was my father, mother, or child?”

RESTORING PATIENTS’ HEALTH

Dr. Jensen Hyde, Chief Medical Officer for Erlanger, has wanted to be a doctor for as long as she can remember. When it came time to zero in on a specialty, Dr. Hyde was overwhelmed with options. “I liked everything, and if you like everything there’s nothing better than internal medicine,” she explains. “You get to see a little bit of everything when it comes to patient types and pathologies.” Drawn to the more fastpaced flow, Dr. Hyde, who has been practicing for nearly a decade, has found herself in hospital medicine and wouldn’t have it any other way. “I see and treat people when they are at some of the most vulnerable and frightening times in their lives,” Dr. Hyde says. “Being able to walk with people during these high stress situations is one of the things I find most rewarding about my practice.”

What is one of your happiest professional moments?

1I still get a lot of joy out of the day-to-day patient interactions – especially when someone starts feeling better. To see them get their spark back and be themselves again is a wonderful feeling.

2What’s the key to making a great first impression?

Quiet confidence. People do notice what you look like when they meet you, but they react to how you make them feel and the confidence you inspire.

3

How does your staff enhance your practice?

Nobody in healthcare operates in a vacuum. I may not have an outpatient office staff in the traditional sense, but I have something better – a whole hospital full of talented, vibrant, passionate people who come to work every day to make a difference.

4

What is your philosophy when it comes to the care of your patients?

Ownership. I feel very strongly that if a patient is in my care, I (or the team I’m working with) have ultimate responsibility for what happens to that patient. This involves a lot of coordination of care to make sure we have a solid plan that is then presented to the patient in a way that is accessible to them.

5

What would you consider to be your main strengths?

I’m pretty efficient, and I also really enjoy seeing things through to the finish line. Taking complex systems and breaking them down so we can work through the steps to improve the process overall gives me a lot of satisfaction.

RESTORING CONFIDENCE & SMILES

1

Dr. Bill Childress’ daily routine begins with a workout and a Christian devotional. “Then once I get to work, I review the day’s surgeries and meet with the team to go over each case,” he shares. Consultations and surgeries take up the remainder of his day. No matter the size or scope of the surgery he’s performing, Dr. Childress tries to see things from his patient’s perspective. “I do surgery all day long, and it’s easy to take the small procedures for granted,” he explains. “But for each patient, that surgery is a big surgery – and that’s exactly how I treat it.” Putting patients at ease is important to Dr. Childress, starting with the initial consultation. He says, “I always look my patients in the eye, introduce myself, and ask how I can help. And then I listen.”

What do you love most about your profession?

I get to relieve pain and suffering – and see immediate results most of the time. By collaborating with general dentists, I’m able to help restore a patient’s confidence and smile.

2

What is one of your happiest professional moments?

Retiring from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years, as well as starting a private practice in 2010 that is still going strong after 13 years and a tornado.

3

What do you see as the most exciting new development for your profession?

Digital X-rays and scanners replacing film and impression materials. Rather than having a big gloopy tray of play-doh in a patient’s mouth, we can now scan with a handheld device and produce a model for restoring teeth.

4 What would you consider to be your main strengths?

I’m grateful to God for my talents and gifts, and I offer prayer with each of my patients. I sincerely think prayer before surgery helps with a positive outcome and recovery.

5

Why did you choose to become an oral surgeon?

I spent a lot of time with two of my uncles growing up, both of whom practiced dentistry into their 80s. While I always admired their work ethic, I’ll probably retire before that!

UNDERSTANDING HER PATIENTS

Dr. Priya Vijayvargiya (Vijay) has wanted to be a doctor for as long as she can remember. Growing up around physicians, it’s no surprise she found her way to the medical – specifically gastroenterology – field. “I’ve always been taught to give back to the world more than you take from it, and this is my way of doing that,” explains Dr. Vijay. In her first year of practice, Dr. Vijay has focused on getting to the root of her patients’ problems in order to find long-term solutions. “I listen to truly understand my patients instead of listening to find a quick resolution,” says Dr. Vijay. “Understanding my patients’ goals helps me know how I can best serve them.”

Erlanger Gastroenterology

1What do you love most about your profession?

The ability to understand the human body, how it can go wrong, and most importantly how we can fix it.

2What would you consider to be your main strengths?

I’m an active listener and am passionate about understanding my patients’ symptoms and goals. As my training has been both clinical and research based, I approach patients’ symptoms in a unique and systematic way.

3

Why have you chosen this field of specialty?

I’m fascinated by the body. Gastroenterology involves all of the organs required for digestion. The digestive system is amazing in what it does for the body.

4

What is one of your happiest professional moments?

I had a complicated patient with both slow transit constipation and pelvic floor dyssynergia. He had seen multiple gastroenterologists and suffered from daily symptoms. By identifying the two causes of his constipation, we were able to treat both simultaneously with significant improvement in this daily life.

5

What is your best advice for patients?

The digestive organs are a critical piece of day-to-day function and can have significant implications in one’s quality of life.

RESTORING FUNCTION TO PATIENTS’ LIVES

After participating in several medical mission trips in high school, Dr. Brandon Boyd became keenly aware of how much certain procedures and treatments could drastically improve the quality of life for patients. By focusing on treating hand injuries and pain, Dr. Boyd is often able to restore function to what is an extremely vital part of the human body. Supported by a talented staff, Dr. Boyd can often be found seeing patients at select offices in and around Chattanooga, with some time carved out each week for surgical procedures.

How does your staff enhance your practice?

1I am very fortunate to be surrounded by excellent and compassionate staff that go above and beyond to help care for each and every patient from the time they make an appointment to the time they leave the office.

2Why did you choose to become a doctor?

I knew I wanted to become a physician in high school after being involved in medical and dental mission trips. The ability to help significantly improve someone’s quality of life has since been one of my greatest passions.

3

Why have you chosen this field of specialty?

It is obvious that we use our hands throughout all aspects of our day. However, it isn’t until an injury or pain happens that affects the ability to use the hands, do people realize how much their job and quality of life suffers. I enjoy working with patients to try to restore their hand function as much as possible to allow them to return to doing the tasks they need or want.

4

What is your best advice for patients?

My best advice for patients with longstanding hand issues would be to try to keep a mental note of what activities they can and cannot perform due to their underlying issue. In addition, it is important to know if they have noticed anything that improves or worsens their symptoms. This information is helpful in establishing an accurate diagnosis and developing a treatment plan specific to the patient.

5

What does your daily routine look like?

My daily routine varies significantly throughout the week. I spend much of my time meeting with patients at our two locations in Chattanooga and Cleveland to help them determine the best course of action to relieve the pain from hand injuries and other issues. Two days a week, I spend my day in surgery performing surgeries and procedures to help patients regain their quality of life.

EMPOWERING THE ATHLETE WITHIN

1

Growing up as an athlete, Dr. Callie Lance has had her fair share of injuries. Through all of her time spent in doctors’ offices, Dr. Lance finally found a treatment plan that worked for her and became motivated to share it with those who live, work, and play in the Scenic City. “I hated going to the doctor growing up because I felt like I was just a number. Doctors didn’t really listen to what was wrong, or every time I went I got bad news,” says Dr. Lance. “It was never somewhere I felt empowered to better myself. I want to provide a space where people are given the tools and confidence to achieve their health goals.” A chiropractor for over five years, Dr. Lance prides herself in truly listening to her patients and taking a holistic approach - one that often combines rehabilitation, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and strength training.

What do you love most about your profession?

I love the vulnerability and trust it requires to give quality care – to really sit down and take the time to listen to my patients’ stories, not just their complaints. I have the opportunity and honor to establish a permanent relationship that allows for an empowering health journey through body and mind, not just treating symptoms.

2

What is one of your happiest professional moments?

My happiest moments are when I can celebrate my patients achieving their goals! Whether being able to tie their shoes without pain, keeping up with the kids, or completing an Ironman.

3

What is your best advice for patients?

Remember you only get one body to live in, so please nurture it. Slow down, be present (especially with loved ones), and most importantly, work on yourself. Health isn’t a privilege, it’s a priority.

4

What do you see as the most exciting new development for your profession?

The increase in interdisciplinary practices and chiropractors being added into the hospital systems. This allows patients to have access to an entire health team that has open communication channels to provide the top medical care needed.

Listening to the patient is the first and most important skill to possess as a doctor. Empathy allows for patients to feel comfortable telling you the real story, not just the highlights.”

5

What’s the key to making a great first impression?

The key to making a great first impression is how you make the other person feel. Being kind, inviting, and confident are some of the key factors in my eyes.

Is It Eczema or Psoriasis?

Rashes are a common concern, but they’re often a source of confusion as well. We all know the feeling: you notice an itch that won’t go away, your skin feels warmer or more tender than usual, and then you notice bumps or discoloration. You’ve definitely got a rash, but what caused it?

The answer could be eczema or psoriasis, but it can be hard to tell these conditions apart. Here, we spoke with local experts to learn more about their differences and how to find relief from both.

46 healthscopemag.com

What Is Eczema? What Is Psoriasis?

Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is a chronic condition that causes recurring outbreaks of dry, itchy, and inflamed skin that are often triggered by external irritants. “Eczema usually appears as rough patches in the creases of the arms or legs, on the hands and feet, on the face, or the back of the neck,” says Dr. Deanna G. Brown of Four Bridges Dermatology & Cosmetics. “When eczema is caused by an allergy (allergic contact dermatitis), it can have a unique geometric shape or location that correlates to whatever triggered the rash. For example, nickel allergy rashes often show up on the lower abdomen where your belt buckle rests.”

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition characterized by a scaly rash. Psoriasis flares can last from a few weeks to several months and are often quite painful, but may or may not be itchy. “It commonly appears as well-defined, raised ‘plaques’ with scaling over the knees, elbows, scalp, and lower back, and can even affect your nails, causing discoloration and pitting. When psoriasis appears after an infection (guttate psoriasis), it may develop as small scaly red spots on the trunk, arms, and legs. Rarely, it also can look like widespread pus-filled bumps with very red skin,” Dr. Brown explains.

Symptoms Include:

• Dry, cracked skin

• Itchiness

• Inflamed or swollen skin that may be discolored

• Small, raised bumps

• Oozing and crusting

• Thickened skin

• Darkening of the skin around the eyes

• Scratching that leads to raw or sensitive skin

Symptoms Include:

• Cyclic outbreaks of rashes that range from mild and dandruff-like to severe, widespread outbreaks covering much of the body

• Rashes that tend to be shades of purple with gray scales on darker skin tones and shades of red with silver scales on lighter skin tones

• Small, scaling spots

• Dry, cracked skin that may bleed

• Itching, burning, or tenderness

Diagnosis

Though eczema and psoriasis can have similar symptoms, there are notable differences. “The key difference is that eczema is an impaired skin barrier with loss of moisture in the skin, while psoriasis is generally an overabundance of skin growth,” says Dr. Abby Russell of Galen Dermatology. “Some common clinical differences are that eczematous skin is more prone to secondary infections with crusting, oozing, or yellow drainage, while psoriasis occurs in areas of trauma or injury more readily than eczema would. Psoriasis is also associated with arthritis.” Additionally, Dr. Victor Czerkasij of Skin Cancer & Cosmetic Dermatology says, “Timing can also be a hint: psoriasis typically improves in spring and summer with increased sunlight.”

Still, determining the exact cause of a rash can be a bit tricky. Dr. Czerkasij explains, “There are multiple forms of eczema and five recognized types of psoriasis, so diagnosis requires careful examination of patient history and the skin.” When it comes to these exams, Dr. Brown says, “I consider how the rash looks and its location on the body. I also ask questions about a patient’s family history, personal history of asthma or allergies (for eczema) or arthritis (for psoriasis), and how long the rash has been developing. If I’m still unsure what is causing the rash, I will perform a simple skin biopsy.”

Treatment

Recent advancements have significantly expanded treatment options, particularly for more severe cases. “Mild eczema and psoriasis are treated very similarly. Both initially are treated with topical creams and ointments,” says Dr. Russell. “In more moderate to severe cases, patients often benefit from systemic medications, including biologics. These medications target parts of the immune system that have gone ‘haywire’ and are contributing to the disease.”

“For the 30 million Americans living with eczema and the 8 million with psoriasis, know that we have made amazing strides in understanding the nature of these diseases right at the cellular level,” Dr. Czerkasij says. “Biologics can target the exact cytokines (tiny proteins that communicate with one another) which are responsible for either eczema or psoriasis. There are both oral and injectable options, and some are approved for patients as young as six months!”

Advice From the Experts

If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with eczema or psoriasis, know that there are a number of ways to improve your daily experience and limit the risk of flares. Here are some additional words of advice from our local medical providers:

“Good skincare is the key to preventing eczema flares! Find a gentle cleanser (no fragrances) and a cream or ointment moisturizer to use twice daily, and be very careful with exfoliating products. Consult your dermatologist before trying them, as some brands and products are better than others for people with sensitive skin.

If your psoriasis affects your scalp, you may need to use a medicated shampoo like Head & Shoulders twice per week, even if your psoriasis is not always active. If you start to develop more aching or joint pain, it’s best to be seen by a rheumatologist to check for psoriatic arthritis.”

“Cooler showers, moisturizing soaps, and using an over-thecounter lotion or cream designed specifically for eczema is your best bet for not making eczema worse. Reducing stress and anxiety is also recommended.

Psoriasis is a problem that eventually results in multiple comorbidities: worsened outcomes in diabetes, heart conditions, weight gain, smoking, drinking alcohol, blood pressure, and depression – especially when psoriasis is focused in the groin, armpits, or under the breasts. Eating a healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean diet which focuses on increased fruits and vegetables, olive oil, whole grains, and less saturated fats and sugars, can reduce joint pain.”

“It is often easier to keep skin clear than to get it clear, so if over-the-counter treatments are not bringing you sustained relief, it is likely time to see the dermatologist. Mild rashes can be treated with over-the-counter hydrocortisone twice daily for two weeks, but if this is not helping or the rash is getting worse – call the doctor.

There are certain red flags for rashes that everyone should be aware of. You should see a doctor for any rash that is painful, widespread, or involving the mouth, genitalia, or eyes. If you develop a rash after taking a new medication, it is also wise to see a doctor.”

Beyond the Baby Blues Understanding Postpartum Anxiety

Most people have heard of postpartum depression, but postpartum anxiety is believed to be just as common, and it can be just as disruptive to the lives of new parents. Here, we spoke with local experts to learn more about identifying postpartum anxiety and how to get help for yourself or a loved one.

What Is Postpartum Anxiety?

Mood changes often result from the natural hormone fluctuations that occur after giving birth. Temporary feelings like sadness, irritability, or worry, often called the “baby blues,” affect up to 85% of new mothers as their bodies recover postpregnancy. But when symptoms become exceedingly disruptive or don’t go away after a few weeks, they can be signs of a more serious condition.

Anxiety is the body’s natural response to threats of danger, but anxiety disorders cause this feeling even when no threat is present. With postpartum anxiety (PPA), the focus of this anxiety tends to be on the baby’s well-being, often with intrusive thoughts that the baby is in constant danger. This can manifest as restlessness, irritability, and an inability to relax – even in quiet moments. Dr. Anna K. Melnikoff of Galen Obstetrics & Gynecology advises, “If these feelings are overwhelming, frequent, or interfere with one’s daily thoughts or relationships, then it is time to speak with a health professional.”

Postpartum anxiety is an anxiety disorder that typically occurs after giving birth, and it’s more common than many people realize – studies indicate that the condition affects between 11% and 21% of people after giving birth. The condition can affect any parent, even those who did not carry and deliver the baby themselves.

Is It Postpartum Anxiety or Just New Parent Worries?

Unfortunately, PPA is often written off as a normal part of the new parent experience or something to be expected when a new child is added to the family. New parents expect the first stage of parenthood to be a big adjustment, and this can make it harder to separate disorders from the typical experience. “There’s the thought that ‘maybe this is just part of being a mom’ or ‘maybe this is just hard now because I have three kids.’ With postpartum anxiety, these fears and feelings begin to impede your daily life,” explains Natalie Battles, LCSW, of Roots Counseling Center.

“A lot of the focus with postpartum anxiety can be centered around the baby; baby's sleep can be a big trigger and a big focus, as well as how much they’re eating and whether or not they’re meeting the typical milestones,” Battles explains. “But then a lot of the focus can also be on the mother and her own self – the identity shift that she goes through during the postpartum time.” While these concerns are certainly not abnormal on their own, when they become obsessive or intrusive thoughts that interrupt daily life or negatively impact relationships, they are certainly a sign of PPA.

Many people believe that postpartum disorders all involve thoughts of harming the baby, but this is a misconception. PPA and other disorders in the postpartum family do not have to be that extreme to be clinically significant, and it is certainly best to seek treatment before the disorder gets to such a critical point. “Postpartum psychosis, in which a patient may experience hallucinations, delusions, manic episodes, or have suicidal or infanticidal ideations, is rare. However, this is a severe potential complication, especially in patients with any history of postpartum psychosis or bipolar disorder. If a new mother is experiencing any of these symptoms, she should seek help immediately,” Dr. Melnikoff advises.

Getting Help

Whether you’ve noticed symptoms for yourself or a concerned friend or loved one has brought them to your attention, it is important to remember that there are options for treatment. “The most important thing a patient can do is be open and honest with her provider about her symptoms. Early counseling, routine physical activity, support groups, and medication may be considered, but each patient’s experience and needs are different. Importantly, if a patient is already taking medication, they should consult a health professional before stopping any medication. Most mental health medications can be safely continued during pregnancy and in the postpartum period, and this can significantly help reduce the severity of symptoms,” Dr. Melnikoff shares. “Often, my patients will say they did not want to come in because they felt like they needed to ‘wait it out.’ It is never too early or too late to seek help.”

New parents are often faced with societal pressures which can make it difficult to accept that they may need help. “There’s a lot of stigma around motherhood in general. People say things like ‘oh, enjoy it!’ or ‘you’re going to miss it!,’ and this can make some mothers feel worse about themselves because they’re not enjoying it,” Battles explains. “One thing I would like every mother with postpartum anxiety to know is that you're not a failure. You did nothing to cause this. There's nothing wrong with you, and you're not broken. Becoming a new mother is really hard. Becoming a second- or third-time mother is also really hard, but it doesn’t have to be this hard. With support the load can be lightened, and with help you will be well.”

The Truth About Lung Cancer

58 healthscopemag.com

Lung cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, but it claims more lives than any other type of cancer each year. Second to heart disease, lung cancer is the greatest health risk in Tennessee and throughout the country, but decades of misguided messaging have created a stigma that makes it difficult for doctors to properly address this health crisis. In honor of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, which takes place in November, we’re sharing important information about this misunderstood disease. Read on to learn more.

Though more people are diagnosed with skin cancer – followed by breast cancer for women and prostate cancer for men – lung cancer has long evaded the spotlight while quietly causing more deaths than any other cancer. Physicians, like Dr. J. Rob Headrick of CHI Memorial Chest and Lung Cancer Center, believe that many of these deaths would be preventable with early detection and treatment.

The problem, Dr. Headrick says, is getting people to talk about lung cancer the same way we talk about other common cancers and diseases. “If you look at the top two things in our community that impact our health, one of them is heart disease and the other is lung cancer,” he explains. “Everybody is comfortable talking about heart disease, but nobody’s comfortable talking about the big elephant in the room, which is lung cancer.”

It’s Not Just for Smokers

One of the most harmful messages surrounding lung cancer is its nearly inseparable association with tobacco use. While it is true that smoking is the number one risk factor, the idea that only smokers end up with lung cancer is not only a difficult stigma for lung cancer patients to deal with, it is a dangerous misconception. “People have this idea that ‘if I smoke, I can and will get lung cancer. If I didn’t smoke, I’m good and I don’t have to worry about it.’ And that’s probably the biggest misnomer we’re trying to correct. The message we’re trying to share is that the only requirement for lung cancer is that you have lungs,” Dr. Headrick shares.

The stigma surrounding lung cancer can be painful for patients who are already dealing with a difficult diagnosis. “Ironically, the majority of smokers will never get lung cancer. In fact, our fastest-rising group of people getting lung cancer is female non-smokers,” Dr. Headrick continues. “I think today probably a third of my patients are non-smokers, and they really bear the brunt of the disease because people walk up to them and say things like ‘I didn’t know you smoked,’ but they didn’t smoke. They just had lungs.”

According to the CDC, about 10-20% of lung cancers occur in people who never smoked or have smoked fewer than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime. While this may seem like a small percentage, it amounts to roughly 20,000 to 40,000 cases of lung cancer each year. These cases are particularly concerning because these are people who may not have realized they were at risk, and therefore might not get a diagnosis until the cancer has progressed significantly.

Common Causes of Lung Cancer in Non-Smokers Include:

• Radon: Second to smoking, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Radon is an invisible, odorless, and tasteless gas that occurs naturally in rocks, soil, and water but can become an indoor air pollutant when it seeps into buildings through cracks or holes. The EPA estimates that roughly 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year are caused by radon, but you can protect yourself by having your home tested and taking measures to reduce radon levels if needed.

• Secondhand smoke: Exposure to smoke from other people’s cigarettes, cigars, and pipes can significantly increase a person’s risk of cancer. For this reason, it is very important to protect yourself and others from secondhand smoke.

• Carcinogens in the workplace: People who are frequently exposed to cancer-causing agents in the workplace such as arsenic, uranium, asbestos, and diesel exhaust should take steps to protect themselves by following any workplace safety protocols, wearing personal protective equipment, and limiting exposure.

• Genetic predisposition: If you have a family history of lung cancer or a personal history of another type of cancer, you are at increased risk for lung cancer.

Lung Cancer Is Highly Treatable in Early Stages

There is a common misconception that lung cancer is exceedingly difficult to treat, but that is another harmful idea contributing to this health crisis. People may put off a diagnosis if they don’t believe there is any hope for successful treatment, but the truth is that lung cancer is highly treatable when it’s caught in the early stages. “It’s a one-day surgery or four days of radiation. You don’t even have to miss work,” Dr. Headrick says. “We have an opportunity to take a disease that has such a disruptive impact and convert it into something that’s really easy to treat.”

According to Dr. Headrick, screening is one of the best ways to combat lung cancer by catching it before it becomes a more significant problem. He explains, “Lung cancer has no symptoms until it’s in the latter stages. When someone starts feeling bad and having symptoms from lung cancer, there’s an 80% chance that it has already advanced, and the prognosis is going to be extremely poor. But if we find someone with lung cancer through a screening program who has no symptoms, there’s a good chance that the cancer will be early stage and there’s a 90% chance of curing it.”

Physicians are finding new ways to make lung cancer screening more readily available in the hopes that they can catch more cases in the early stages. CHI Memorial, for instance, has implemented the Breathe Easy mobile CT scan unit, which Dr. Headrick hopes will encourage more people to be proactive about their lung health. “It’s a three minute test. With the mobile unit, it’s about a seven and a half minute visit. It’s just about the easiest screening test in the world – there’s no bowel prep, there’s no scopes, there’s no pain. But the value that comes from it is incredible,” he says.

Currently, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends yearly lung cancer screening for people between 50 and 80 years old who have at least a 20 pack-year (smoking an average of one pack of cigarettes per day for one year) smoking history and currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years. These parameters are meant to identify adults who are at the highest risk of lung cancer, but Dr. Headrick believes that as our understanding of lung cancer evolves, this recommendation will evolve to focus more on family history, exposure history, and other risk factors that come into play.

If you are at increased risk of lung cancer, it is certainly worth discussing screening options with your physician.

ANNUAL SPE C IAL SECTION

Understanding

Peripheral Artery Disease

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a circulatory disorder where narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs. When the arms and legs don’t receive enough blood, they may not function properly. PAD is a serious condition that often goes undiagnosed in women until symptoms present themselves.

If left untreated, peripheral artery disease can cause serious health problems, and amputation may become necessary to prevent further complications. Conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, transient ischemic attacks, and renal artery disease can all result from untreated PAD.

Causes and Symptoms

PAD is caused by a atherosclerosis, which causes fatty deposits to build up on the artery walls and block vital blood flow to the limbs. Risk factors for atherosclerosis include smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, and

Peripheral Artery Disease

This vascular condition can have serious complications for women if left untreated.

high cholesterol. Those with PAD may develop numbness or weakness in the limbs; painful cramping in the hips or legs; sores that won’t heal; coldness in one leg; and pale or discolored feet.

Prevention and Treatment

Preventative measures can help lower the risk factors associated with PAD and include regular exercise, avoiding foods high in saturated fat, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and keeping blood sugar under control if you have diabetes. These lifestyle changes can also help treat PAD once it has already developed. Additionally, procedures such as angioplasty, stent placements, and atherectomies can help with prognosis.

If you are at risk for peripheral artery disease or are experiencing symptoms, consult with your doctor. An early diagnosis can ensure you receive proper treatment before more serious complications arise.

An Expert Weighs In

“Although there are many similarities between men and women when it comes to health-related topics, gender matters. Women who develop aneurysm disease from weakened arteries related to PAD have a higher risk of rupture. Also, women with diabetes or high cholesterol have a four times higher risk of symptomatic PAD. Don’t be afraid to learn about your body if you suspect PAD. An early diagnosis before the heart attack, stroke, or walking leg pain is critical, because all of these might be avoided if preventative treatments are started early.”

Understanding Mammograms

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and early detection is critical in determining prognosis. Mammography uses x-rays to produce images of breast tissue and is the most common screening test for breast cancer detection.

While mammograms are traditionally two-dimensional, a new, more accurate mammography technology has recently emerged Breast tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, provides detailed three-dimensional images that allow radiologists to view different layers of breast tissue and detect small masses or abnormalities that have previously been more difficult to visualize.

3D Mammography

This screening technology has revolutionized the early detection of breast cancer.

What to Expect

Receiving a 3D mammogram looks similar to the traditional method. Each breast will be gently compressed while an x-ray machine captures three-dimensional images of the breast tissue from top to bottom and side to side. Afterwards, your radiologist will screen the images for signs of cancer or other problems.

Outlook

Compared to the traditional 2D method, which can be unclear, 3D mammography provides detailed images that yield accurate results. This accuracy reduces the need for additional testing, alleviating stress and taking less time out of women’s days.

A mammogram is recommended yearly for all women beginning at age 40, and now, 3D mammography is an option for this routine screening. If you are due for your annual mammogram, make sure to prioritize your health and schedule an appointment.

An Expert Weighs In

“I recommend 3D mammograms for all women. Early detection is our best defense against breast cancer, and 3D mammograms can detect more cancers than traditional 2D mammograms. 3D mammograms are now conveniently offered at all five Erlanger Breast Centers. Is it time for yours?”

An Expert Weighs In

“A woman’s libido is complicated. There are many factors that contribute to decreased or absent sexual desire. Too often, women do not feel comfortable bringing up these topics or do not feel heard by their provider when they do. Many women come in to our office who ‘want to want sex,’ and my job is to optimize all of these factors to get them feeling like themselves again. Renewing their spontaneous desire makes a huge impact on their personal well-being, self-esteem, and in their relationship.”

Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder

While a woman’s libido fluctuates throughout her lifetime, a prolonged loss of sexual desire can cause distress.

Understanding Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder

Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) refers to a loss of libido that lasts for longer than six months and causes personal distress. HSDD is the most common female sexual dysfunction, and according to the Mayo Clinic, as many as 40% of women will be affected by HSDD at some point in their lives.

Causes and Symptoms

HSDD has a number of possible causes, which can occur in combination. Libido can be affected by illness and medications, as well as hormonal changes such as pregnancy and most commonly, menopause. Psychological, emotional, and relational factors can also weaken a woman’s sex drive. Though the main symptom of HSDD is an absence of sexual desire, personal distress is crucial to diagnosis. This distress may involve feelings of shame, sadness, worry, or fear, along with relational problems related to its interference with intimacy. Libido looks different for everyone, and if a woman is not bothered by her level of sexual desire, it would not be considered HSDD. Longevity is also a key symptom. It is normal to temporarily experience a loss of interest in sex; HSDD results in a lack of libido that is persistent and ongoing.

Treatment and Outlook

Thankfully, HSDD is a treatable condition. A variety of treatment options accommodate the different causes of HSDD and can include medication, counseling, and physical therapy. Lifestyle changes can also help combat low libido, such as stress management and self-care.

If you are suffering from HSDD, consult with your doctor to identify the underlying causes. With time and an appropriate treatment plan, your libido can be restored.

Metabolic Inflammation

A malfunctioning metabolism can cause inflammation and hinder weight loss.

Understanding

Metabolic Inflammation

Metabolic inflammation, or metaflammation, occurs when excess fat tissue and insulin stimulate the immune and inflammatory systems and result in chronic, lowgrade inflammation. This metabolic dysfunction increases insulin resistance, making weight loss difficult and putting the individual at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Metaflammation can also impact tissues in the liver and pancreas and increase the risk of heart disease due to its effects on the cardiovascular system.

Causes and Symptoms

Metaflammation is most commonly linked to weight gain and obesity. Excess nutrient intake causes this metabolic response, and dietary factors such as saturated fatty acids and some sugars may also contribute to the inflammation.

Because metaflammation is a chronic, low-grade reaction, it will not have the same symptoms as

acute inflammation triggered by the immune system. Along with difficulty or inability to lose weight, symptoms include fatigue and signs of insulin resistance such as increased hunger and thirst, blurred vision, and frequent urination.

Treatment and Outlook

In addition to a healthy lifestyle that involves regular exercise and a nutritious diet, innovative formulas can help women suffering from metaflammation achieve their weight loss goals. The medication ingredients phentermine and topiramate are clinically proven to result in up to 11% weight loss when used together, and as understanding of metaflammation grows, low dose naltrexone is also being added to formulas to fight inflammation.

If you are struggling to fight the proinflammatory aspect of carrying extra pounds, consult with your doctor to determine the best path forward. With proper treatment, you can reduce the risk of serious complications and enjoy a better quality of life.

An Expert Weighs In

“Metaflammation describes the metabolic inflammation that usually involves adipose tissue (fat) and insulin. It can also involve sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone and adrenal hormones such as cortisol. Fat stimulates the immune and inflammatory system! It speaks through chemical messengers ultimately resulting in inflammation, which leads to insulin resistance and cardiovascular dysfunction. Is this the type of inflammation that you take ibuprofen for? Nope! Ibuprofen is not a precision medicine approach to inflammation, however low-dose naltrexone (LDN) could be.”

An Expert Weighs In

“LARCs give women effectiveness and autonomy over their family planning future. Women are multitasking ninjas. The safety and effectiveness of LARCs is empowering and comforting. LARC’s, namely IUDs, have been taboo in the United States. Many do not know that IUDs are safe for teenagers, decrease bleeding, decrease risks of infections like gonorrhea and chlamydia, and can help prevent endometrial cancer. Now you know. LARCs can give peace of mind and improve the quality of life for many women.”

Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives

These birth control methods are good options for women seeking long-term pregnancy prevention.

Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives

Long-acting reversible contraceptives, or LARCs, are the most effective form of birth control currently available with a 99% success rate of pregnancy prevention. LARCs can provide pregnancy prevention for 3 to 10 years, depending on the type used, and are a great option for women seeking long-term yet reversible contraception. They are currently the second most popular form of reversible birth control in the United States with an increasing number of women choosing LARCs as their contraceptive method each year.

Types of LARC

There are currently three types of LARCs – two being intrauterine devices (IUDs), a small, T-shaped device inserted into the uterus.

Copper IUDs are a nonhormonal option. The IUD is wrapped in a small piece of copper that sperm avoids, preventing it from reaching the egg. Copper IUDs last 10 years, the longest of LARC methods.

Hormonal IUDs release a small amount of the progestin hormone levonorgestrel over time to prevent pregnancy. There are four brands of hormonal IUDs currently available in the United States, each providing protection for a different number of years.

Implants refer to a tiny plastic rod placed in the inner part of the upper, nondominant arm. It prevents pregnancy for three years by continuously releasing a low dose of etonogestrel, a form of progestin that prevents ovulation.

Your healthcare provider can install the LARC of your choosing during an outpatient procedure. The device will be removed by your provider upon expiration, or earlier should you wish to cease contraception.

Benefits

In addition to being safe, FDA-approved methods, LARCs are also convenient. Unlike oral contraception, which must be taken daily at the exact same time to ensure maximum effectiveness, LARCs require no work on your part after installation. Because they are reversible, LARCs are a great option for women who may want to become pregnant in the future but in the meantime desire long-term birth control. If you are interested in long-acting, reversible contraception, speak with your provider, who can help you find the method that works best for your needs.

“The prospect of treating incontinence is often intimidating. Studies show that approximately 10 million Americans struggle with urge and stress incontinence. You are not alone! Fortunately, advancements have been made so that treating your incontinence does not have to be invasive. By strengthening your pelvic floor muscles with the EMSELLA chair, life can become much easier, more predictable, with less frequent trips to the restroom. Another benefit to EMSELLA treatments is improvement in sexual wellness. Patients have found that in this area of their personal lives, they experienced improvements.”

EMSELLA

Women suffering from urinary incontinence can benefit from this breakthrough technology.

Understanding Urinary Incontinence

According to the Mayo Clinic, 50% of adult women suffer from urinary incontinence, or the involuntary leakage of urine. This problem increases with age, with up to 75% of women over the age of 65 reporting urinary incontinence. This condition can affect one’s quality of life and often prevents women from engaging in the physical activities they enjoy.

Urinary incontinence is often the result of weak pelvic floor muscles, the layer of muscles that span the bottom of the pelvis and provide control over the bladder and bowel. Pelvic floor function can be affected by physiological changes such as vaginal birth, menopause, and aging.

Treatment With EMSELLA

EMSELLA is a noninvasive, innovative treatment that treats urinary incontinence by strengthening the pelvic floor. The technology is fashioned as a chair that utilizes HIFEM, or high intensity focused electromagnetic energy, to stimulate 12,000 pelvic floor muscle contractions during a single session. These contractions, also known as Kegels, strengthen and reeducate the muscles of incontinent patients.

Treatment simply involves sitting on the EMSELLA chair. During the 30-minute session you will feel tingling and pelvic floor muscle contractions. EMSELLA requires no downtime, meaning you can resume daily activities immediately following treatment.

Outlook

Your provider will tailor a treatment plan to fit your needs with most treatment plans involving six sessions, scheduled twice a week. Patients often see improvement after a single session, with gradual improvement over the course of treatment.

95% of EMSELLA patients have reported an improved quality of life since undergoing treatment. Thanks to EMSELLA, women suffering from incontinence can reclaim control over their bladder function and return to activities with confidence.

Understanding Marital Health After Baby

Over 3.6 million babies are born each year in the United States, and when born to first-time parents, usher in a season full of change. Bringing home a baby transforms daily routines and responsibilities; for many couples, the challenges that accompany this adjustment can take a toll on their relational health. In one study, 67% of married couples reported a decline in relationship satisfaction in the year after the birth of their first child. With the majority of new parents struggling with an increase in conflict and decrease in closeness, it’s important to understand the stressors behind this trend and how to respond.

Stressors and Solutions

Common stressors that can strain marriages after bringing baby home include differences in parenting styles, increased responsibilities, finances, lack of intimacy, emotional exhaustion, and loss of sleep.

Marital Health After Baby

The birth of a first child can be a major adjustment for couples to navigate.

While parents may not be able to eliminate these stressors, they can control how they respond to them. Implementing healthy practices can help couples avoid and defuse conflict and draw closer to one another:

• Communicate expectations. Whether it’s parenting styles or balancing responsibilities, an open dialogue about expectations can limit misunderstandings that lead to conflict.

• Bring up problems gently. Disagreements are inevitable, but enter the conversation wanting to understand your partner’s perspective rather than taking a combative stance.

• Set aside time to spend together. Intentional time spent emotionally connecting can build intimacy.

• Remember that you’re in this together. You and your partner are a team that can help each other find the solution to a problem.

Outlook

Practices such as these can be helpful tools as couples navigate parenthood, and if needed, therapists can help guide discussions and provide insight to spouses during this transition. Prioritizing relational health benefits parents and baby alike as couples enjoy their growing family.

An Expert Weighs In

“Parents can spend a lot of time preparing for their baby, but very little time preparing their relationship for a baby. There are many fantastic resources on caring for a new child, yet one of the best ways to care for your newborn is to give them a home with parents committed to caring for one another. Creating some space for relationship counseling post baby can help prevent a slow slide into an unhealthy relationship.”

Destini Russell talks taking back control of your health

Sarcoidosis is a sneaky illness. It is an autoimmune disease in which cells become inflamed. It presents itself in varying forms, sometimes so subtly that you mistake the symptoms for common health issues. Sometimes, there are no symptoms at all. It shape-shifts. It is not limited to one location of the body, and the attacks can range from mild to fatal.

If I were to describe my life in the days before my diagnosis, the words that come to mind are carefree and believed invincibility. I had finally found my footing in my 20s. After stumbling into adulthood and having overcome adversity already, I was finally living independently and comfortably. I had a career that I was passionate about that provided housing for my young son and I. I had an amazing family that supported me and a circle of friends who accompanied me in all of my youthful antics.

In those days I worked hard. I then rewarded myself like any other young person, by partying just as hard. I ate whatever and slept when I could. I handled my responsibilities at times running on empty and prided myself on the ability to

do so. It’s lucky misfortune that I believed this was a sustainable lifestyle because this is what led to my first flare-ups.

Suddenly, I began to experience chronic fatigue and light sensitivity. I woke up one morning, squinting and exhausted. Had I worked too hard during the week or not gotten enough sleep? When I noticed my vision didn’t clear up after hours of being awake, and I was still more tired than ever, alarm bells began to ring. However, I didn’t raise the red flag until my joints began to ache relentlessly and my hands swelled like blistering water balloons.

This began a six-year journey in the search for a diagnosis. One moment, I would be incapable of work or leisure, doubled over in pain, and breaking out

At this time, it is incurable. This is a grim portrait of a disease that materialized seemingly out of nowhere in my world.

in peculiar rashes. I had to have emergency surgery on my thumb and a seizure event sent me to the ER. But in the days and weeks following, I would be the picture of health. This was confusing for doctors and for myself. I started at primary care and was ultimately referred to a host of specialists all over the state - ophthalmologists, neurologists, dermatologists … The list was never ending. The search for answers became as exhausting as my symptoms. Thankfully, there was light at the end of the tunnel.

At yet another doctor’s appointment, an examination of my eyes indicated sarcoidosis. My six-year journey appeared as if it were finally coming to a close. When I received my official diagnosis, professionals advised me of a fearful, powerless fight ahead. There is no cure and no resolve outside of Western pharmaceuticals. It all sounded so grim. At first, I took a multitude of medications that overwhelmed me with disagreeable side effects, but I

knew this was not the path that I was intended to remain on.

I began to do thorough independent and citable research. I gained a lot of knowledge about my triggers, the nature of the illness, and holistic treatments. I devoured any articles, books, and online resources that I could dig up to approach this in a health-conscious manner. The process of my health evolution was set into motion. I began by truly studying my body and monitoring my flares. I noticed that some foods caused a reaction. I realized that sleepless nights or high stress situations affected me. A night of partying or nervous tension could result in an unpredictable episode. The more awareness I gained, the easier it was for me to apply holistic knowledge.

One of my most visible symptoms was my skin. During flares, I would develop swelling or raised skin and irritating rashes. I noticed that it slightly mirrored eczema, a skin condition my son was battling. When the

HER STORY

physicians suggested steroids, I immediately knew I didn’t want to expose him to the same medication that caused me such drastic side effects. This prompted me to learn more about the body’s response to natural ingredients and herbs rather than the store-bought products full of chemicals and dyes.

I began to experiment with soap making. With determination and persistence, I was able to successfully create several products that calmed and hydrated our skin, all but eradicating the symptoms we were experiencing. This was the birth of my soap and skincare line DesJanay From Earth To Skin. From there, I was able to totally restructure my life. I eliminated behaviors that were contributory to the illness. I ate cleaner and increased my water intake. I paired what I was learning with exercise and prayer.

I was able to cease certain medications and reduce others. My skin flares are easily controlled, and my other symptoms occur few and far between. Sarcoidosis is a relatively rare disease. It’s easy to feel as if you are sojourning alone. I began to share my experiences online and quickly discovered there was a community of people nationwide with the same story.

I continue to use my platform to connect with and advocate for those who are fighting daily for quality of life with this illness. I document authentically to provide a true testimony for survivors in hopes they gain inspiration, knowledge, and direction. Sarcoidosis is a part of my story, but it does not define me. It has been a 10-year journey of self-exploration.

I am most proud that I did not take a backseat and allow the fear, ignorance, and trepidation to drown me. I advise anyone going through a similar life-altering transition to have a growth mindset. Once you believe that you are capable of good health, you will outgrow the limiting beliefs that held you captive in your condition. Once you change your mind, everything else will follow. Be your own advocate. Research, present your questions to your healthcare providers, and know that you know your body better than anyone else. Pursue your health like your life depends on it, because it does.

Money Talks

If the thought of sitting down with your boss and asking for a raise seems highly intimidating, you aren’t alone. Although it’s not always an easy conversation to have, when backed by some research, key talking points, and a little confidence, the discussion becomes a lot less scary. Just remember, you and your employer are a team, so approach the conversation accordingly!

86 healthscopemag.com

Plan Your Timing

Perhaps one of the biggest questions people often have about asking for a raise is timing. While there is no universal time to ask for a shift in your compensation, there are a few situations in which it just makes sense. For starters, it’s best to avoid asking during a sensitive time. If your department just reported low numbers or your company recently went through a round of layoffs, it’s best to table the conversation. On the other hand, it may be more favorable to ask for a raise around a performance review, at the end of the fiscal year, or if you’ve recently taken on more responsibility or have had a shift in job duties. Reflect on your company’s pay increase practices, and plan accordingly.

Come Prepared

To increase your odds of successfully receiving a raise, it would be wise to have a few things prepared. It can be helpful to determine if you are currently being paid fairly. The easiest way to do this is to use online tools to evaluate how your salary stacks up against others in your market when factoring in experience, job duties, location, employer size, and other benefits. In addition to providing some market research, it can also be helpful to remind your employer of how long you have been with the company and some of your major accomplishments from the last six months to a year. The last piece to a well-rounded compensation conversation is to not just talk about what you’ve recently accomplished, but also your plans for the future. Present your boss with your goals for the next year, and explain how those objectives would benefit the company.

Know Your Numbers

Now that you have some clarity on when and how to ask for a raise, you may be wondering how much is appropriate. In general, the standard pay increase is around 3% with 5% often being seen as exceptional. That being said, if your role has drastically changed and you’ve taken on a lot more responsibility, 10-20% could be warranted. During the conversation, it is important to remain professional and express gratitude regardless of the outcome. Give your boss time to consider the request, and know that they may have to get the change approved by another entity or individual. If that is the case, allow a few weeks to pass before revisiting the conversation. You also need to be prepared to receive a no. If that happens, ask your employer what you can do to improve your chances for better compensation in the future. A good manager will be transparent about their reasons.

What is the key to having a discussion about compensation run smoothly?

“Build a case to support your request for a salary increase before you enter the conversation. Research market rates for similar roles, and be ready to highlight a few of your significant accomplishments. If the budget doesn’t allow for a monetary raise, be prepared to negotiate for additional benefits, like extra vacation time or the flexibility to work from home.”

What is your top tip for having a challenging conversation with your boss?

“Entering any challenging conversation with transparency, diplomacy, and options for potential resolve is key to getting the desired results. Understand that in the absence of communication, there could be unchecked perceptions that become one’s reality that may not necessarily be what’s true. In a CEO or leadership role, having a focus on the overall organizational health is often more common than a granular focus, and organizational leaders often have some context that others may not. Those are, at times, the missing pieces that need to be discovered. Typically, through question asking there are new discoveries on both ends which could yield solutions to challenges.”

Greater Chattanooga

What is the key to having a discussion about compensation run smoothly?

“Understand how and why your employer sets compensation for its employees. Who is the person who actually determines your compensation and can authorize an increase in your salary? Start your conversation with, “Why am I paid the salary I am paid?” Then go on to explain why you believe your work for the company is undervalued. If you fail to get to the compensation level you desire, ask what you can do to achieve the desired compensation and when the topic can be revisited. ”

The ‘Why’ Behind It

In 2023, it is expected that 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths will occur in the United States. Among those patients, 240,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 42,000 women will die from the disease. However, due to the work of the American Cancer Society and others, substantial progress is being made to reduce cancer mortality. Since 1991, cancer prevention measures and screenings have helped reduce deaths associated with cancer by 33%, averting an estimated 3.8 million cancer deaths. In 2020, research showed that breast cancer death rates had declined by 43% since 1989.

The American Cancer Society continues to lead the fight against cancer in the 21st century, and its commitment to creating a future free from cancer runs deep. That’s why it engages campaign ambassadors across the nation to step up and use the power of wearing pink to raise funds and draw attention to the breast cancer fight.

Since 2015, more than $890,000 has been raised locally through the Real Men Wear Pink fundraising event, and every dollar has helped the American Cancer Society save more lives.

What follows are this year’s Real Men Wear Pink ambassadors and their personal stories, which have led them to give their time and talent to raise much-needed funds for the fight against cancer.

To help raise money to treat those afflicted by this awful disease and ultimately find the cure for breast cancer, donate to Real Men Wear Pink of Chattanooga at bit.ly/RMWPChatt.

CONTENT PROVIDED BY THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY

I work in healthcare and get to see the devastating effects cancer causes on families. I had family members and friends who have lost battles with cancer. There is nothing good about cancer, and I want to help raise money to find a cure. Together, we can fight to help find that cure one day!

88 healthscopemag.com

I am donating my time and resources to Real Men Wear Pink because Erin, my wife, has breast cancer; this also means that WE have cancer. Erin and I started our lives together over 20 years ago, living and working side-by-side almost every day. We share in everything, and that includes this cancer battle. Since her diagnosis one year ago and our first visit to Vanderbilt, we’ve seen firsthand the developments in medication and treatment plans that allow doctors to target cancer and stop growth. Because of research, trials, and newly approved medications rapidly hitting the market, patients are living longer with hopes of a cure for this dreaded disease looking better every day. The hope we have is due in no small part to the research funded by the American Cancer Society (ACS). Chances are you know someone who has been affected by cancer. For us, it’s something we live with every day. Will you follow us in donating to ACS to help find a cure for Erin and so many other wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, children, friends, and loved ones affected by cancer?

In 2020, COVID-19 had many people confined to their homes for most of the year, especially those over the age of 70. It was in the spring of 2020 that my fiancée’s mom was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer. Being the strong-willed, independent woman she was, she never wanted anyone to worry so she chose to face that journey on her own, making the decision to receive little to no treatment. With our inability to see her for quite some time, she was successful in keeping her diagnosis and its severity a secret until it was too late for anything to be done to help her. On September 25, 2021, Shelley lost her mom. Shelley’s dad lost his wife. Shelley’s kids lost their Nana. I will wear pink for Christina Hickman. Every day, the American Cancer Society is saving more lives from breast cancer than ever before. They’re helping people take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or find it early when it’s easier to treat. They provide free information and services when and where people need it. They fund groundbreaking breast cancer research, and they’re working to ensure access to mammograms for women who need them.

I have been surrounded by women my whole life! My mamma was born into a family of all-girl siblings, and all my cousins were girls too. So, growing up, while my dad was doing his job as a long-haul truck driver during the week, I was often surrounded by my mom and my aunts and cousins. Now in my own home, I am once again outnumbered by my wife and our rescue dog, Mona Lisa. To say some of the most special people in my life have been women is an understatement. Additionally, with my career in healthcare, the fact is 75% of our industry workforce is women. Erlanger is also proud to have many successful professional women on our Board of Trustees, including one as chairperson. So many of my bosses are women now too. No doubt, women are the bedrock of healthcare in addition to our homes and communities. It makes sense that I would be a champion to end breast cancer for women. I am a cancer survivor myself and know that science with new diagnostics and treatments is the future of cancer eradication. It is exciting for me to have had personal tours of some of the latest genetic cancer studies that are taking place today to pinpoint therapies very specific to individual DNA structures. This is making vaccines for certain cancers a real potential on the horizon. Now is definitely the time to invest in cancer research, and I am very proud to support the American Cancer Society’s commitment to pushing the envelope toward research and cures for women and breast cancer.

As a retired Air Force veteran, my desire is to help and protect. If I have the opportunity to help my community, why wouldn’t I? If I have the ability to help someone, then I want to do it, and chances are, we all know someone affected by cancer. My grandfather died of brain cancer, my mother had skin cancer, and sadly, my wife lost her 6-yearold nephew to cancer. This is why I am stepping up and using the power of the Real Men Wear Pink campaign to draw attention to the breast cancer fight. I have committed to raising a minimum of $10,000 toward fighting breast cancer. Whether the money goes to providing transportation to clinical help or to drug research, whether it’s here at home in Chattanooga or elsewhere – it all matters. If I have the ability to make a small difference, I’m in.

Cancer affects us all at some point in our lives. When the opportunity to participate in Real Men Wear Pink was presented to me by my good friends, Brian and Erin May, I was honored. I took a minute to inventory my life and how it has been touched by cancer. My grandfather, Huck Broyles, died of a brain tumor at the age of 60, only five weeks after his diagnosis. His cancer would be operable (although not curable) today due to years of research and advances in medicine thanks to the American Cancer Society. About 20 years ago, my aunt died of ovarian cancer, a cancer that is especially deadly even today. In recent years, our company has lost a dear employee to cancer, we have a survivor on our team, and a current employee is being treated for cancer. We still need more research. Please help us raise money for the research into new treatments and procedures that give families hope, strength, and above all, added priceless time with their loved ones.

Fundraising campaigns such as Real Men Wear Pink provide invaluable resources to help us fight breast cancer. These funds fuel research that leads to earlier detection through screening and many breakthroughs in treatment, both of which are contributing to significantly higher survival rates. I am a breast cancer surgeon, so this terrible disease affects me daily. It is my honor to help patients navigate through some of the most difficult times of their lives. I’m privileged to play a role in diagnosing and treating cancer, offering supportive care to patients and their families, and providing long-term follow-up and surveillance. My patients become my family, and I wear pink for them.

Dr. Richard M. Tanner General/Breast Surgeon, University Surgical Associates Michael Turner Owner, Huck & Peck Furniture

When I was presented with the opportunity to participate in Real Men Wear Pink the first thought that came to mind was, “It’s a no-brainer.” How could I say no? Safe to say almost everyone has been affected by cancer in some way – whether it be an immediate family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor, or a friend of a friend. My grandmother and mother-in-law are both cancer survivors, and they both faced it with much bravery. Two of the toughest individuals I know! The main reason each of them was able to survive the cancer they faced is related to all the research that has been done in cancer care. But there is still a lot more that needs to be done to help cancer patients live longer. That’s why the American Cancer Society is so important. The funds raised from ACS events go toward research to help find new and better ways to beat cancer.

For me, being named a Real Men Wear Pink ambassador is personal. Who among us doesn’t know someone (friends, family members, or even ourselves) who has been impacted by cancer? I know I do, personally, I have been under an oncologist’s care for more than a decade now. My mother had basal cell carcinoma, I have friends who have been diagnosed with different forms of cancer, and a very close friend passed from ovarian cancer two years ago. While it seems like we hear about these stories and the need to “beat cancer,” the truth is we still need funds to make cancer a thing of the past. That’s why I’m raising money, on a personal level, on a business level, and on an impact level. You can count on the American Cancer Society to be good stewards of the donations you entrust us with, and you can know that your donations can have an impact on advancing the mission of “beating cancer.” Let’s make it personal.

In 2016, I lost my father to cancer. I helped care for him as he walked through his battle and having firsthand experience makes you change how you look at this evil disease. Cancer sucks and there is no way around it. October is a special month as it focuses solely on breast cancer. While I have no direct experience with breast cancer, I stand up and serve to bring awareness but also to raise funds to fight the disease for all men and women experiencing it’s impact. I hope my efforts help bring an end to breast cancer through research and studies so no other woman (or man) must fight this disease.

Breast cancer affects one in eight women. Over the years as a head football coach, I have seen the firsthand devastating effect on my players and their families. Football at its core is rooted in faith and family, and that’s why I am committed to fighting this disease by raising funds to support needed research and breast cancer awareness so that my grandchildren’s generation sees a world where breast cancer is a chronic condition and not a life-threatening illness.

First, I am honored to support the American Cancer Society and to be a part of an amazing campaign such as Real Men Wear Pink. Furthering breast cancer awareness and research is something that can have a positive impact on so many individuals. The cause is very personal for my family as my wife, Shari, was diagnosed with and fought breast cancer in 2018. She, like so many others, faced it head-on and had amazing doctors and nurses to help her along the way. As a family, we will do whatever we can to help spread the word and raise money for this important cause. Our hope is to help individuals and families impacted by breast cancer through the Real Men Wear Pink Campaign. Please join us in this endeavor by donating to ASC. Any amount is appreciated. Thank you for your support!

My wife is a bladder cancer survivor. In 2015, she was diagnosed with bladder cancer and if not for research in cancer cell immunotherapy funded by the American Cancer Society, she would not be alive today.

C. Mark Warren

My ‘why’ is simply stated. In my extended family and my wife’s immediate family, we both have had some wins and losses, and I if can do something to help someone else not to have to deal with these challenges, it’s all worth it.

Why? It is very simple. I am obligated to. I am obligated to do my part no matter how large or small that may be or how large or small the platform may be. I am obligated to remain by my wife’s side for as long as we both walk this planet. I am obligated to walk my daughter down the aisle, and I am obligated to hold my grandchildren – so simply put, that is why.

My family and close friends have been and are affected by various forms of cancer including ovarian cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, skin cancer, and multiple myeloma. I have heard and experienced so many life-altering stories in the past two years where cancer has taken loved ones. The blessing is that there are many survivors as well thanks to the work of the American Cancer Society. Since I’m able to make a difference within my community, I believe I have an obligation to do so. By raising money and awareness through Real Men Wear Pink, we can collectively provide needed resources for research and patient resources for everyone.

How to Choose a Therapist

Looking for a new therapist? With some careful planning and support from others, you can take the next step in your mental health journey with confidence!

Specify

The first step to finding the right therapist for you is to get specific. Define your areas of concern, and decide what goals you want to accomplish through therapy. You can also begin to narrow your search by learning more about specific types of therapy. For example, you might consider cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to better understand and address recurring thoughts or behaviors, or group therapy might be the best option for you if you want to build community with individuals facing similar challenges.

Some Types of Therapy to Consider:

• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – structured, oftentimes shortterm therapy with a focus on understanding and responding to recurring thoughts, feelings, and behaviors

• Psychodynamic Therapy – a form of talk therapy with a focus on increased self-understanding

• Dialectical Behavioral Therapy – a form of behavior therapy focused on self-acceptance and coping skills

• Exposure Therapy – intervention strategy used to systematically confront fears and challenge patterns of avoidance

• Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy –trauma-informed therapy aiming to decrease emotional distress through talk and rhythmic eye-movement stimulation

• Interpersonal Therapy – short-term therapy used to address social concerns and relational issues

• Group Therapy – form of therapy designed to create support and connections between individuals with similar challenges

Explore

Explore online databases like locator. apa.org and findapsychologist.org, or use local community resources to start your search. Ask trusted family or friends for help and support while you find therapists and schedule your intake appointment.

Ask

Questions to Ask Your Therapist:

• What certification or degrees do you currently hold?

• What are your specialties?

• How long have you worked in this field?

• Have you worked with someone with areas of concern similar to mine?

• How will treatment actually change the challenges I’m currently facing?

• How many therapy sessions will treatment consist of?

• How will we assess my progress in therapy?

• How much will treatment cost?

Julie Edwards

For Julie Edwards, health and wellness takes many different forms. Whether it’s working in the garden, going for walks, or simply having conversations with loved ones, Edwards is focused on forming connections in order to enrich her life. As a recent empty nester, Edwards has been relying on her faith, friends, and family – and a little quality time with mother nature – in order to maintain balance and find happiness in her everyday life.

What is your approach to wellness? How has that changed over time?

I try to walk four miles a day and eat healthy. My dad died of a heart attack when I was 10, so I try to be very mindful of living a healthy lifestyle. Keeping boundaries and finding a work-life balance has always been important to me. I totally believe in the power of laughter and being happy!

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

During Covid when life kind of sent us all home, I took a parttime job at Ooltewah Nursery & Landscape Co. because I love to work in the yard. Even though things have picked back up at work, I still go there a few days a week, and I love it. Listening to the birds and being outside and around happy people definitely helps boost my spirits.

What are the traits you most value in yourself?

I think I’m an encouraging person, and I’m not one to back away from a challenge or take no for an answer.

What are some of your current goals and what are you doing to work toward them?

Right now, I’m learning how to be an empty nester. I will admit that it’s kind of nice to not do so much laundry.

When it comes to health and wellness, is there anyone you admire or look up to? Why?

My mom, without question. She turns 93 in November and still walks close to two miles a day and doesn’t take any medicines. She’s always seen staying healthy as the best gift she can give my brothers and me. My husband, Mark, is also a big encourager. He’s completely dedicated to exercise and healthy eating and does more of the cooking than me.

How do you approach emotional well-being?

I have a very deep faith that keeps me from worrying too much and a great circle of friends and family that are my world.

What does your daily routine look like?

I thrive on a routine, and I’m a huge list maker. I have a morning cup of coffee, then take the dog for a morning walk in the neighborhood. I’m usually at work by 8

a.m. I’m in interviews until 10:30, and then I focus on emails and in-house work. Two days a week, we go on location for interviews. I’m home by the early afternoon and try to get a workout in before having dinner, which is usually cooked by my husband.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Listen to your gut. Learning to trust my inner self has carried me through some very difficult times.

What do you find the most rewarding?

I was a stay-at-home mom for 10 years, and my daughters have always been at the top of my list, but my job at Channel 3 fills my cup in more ways than I can count. I love the people I work with, and we are truly a family. And the guests I get to interview become friends too. I feel like it’s a gift given to me every day to get to go to work.

How do you encourage health and wellness within your family?

We are a family of talkers. I think that helps. We are always there to be each other’s sounding board.

What’s the key to making a great first impression?

The key to making a great first impression is to be authentic and honest. Being confident in your knowledge and listening to the client’s concerns and goals.

Ensuring Care

1

Dedicated to high-quality patient care, Terry Rogers creates unique treatment plans for 15 to 25 patients a day. “No cookie-cutter treatment from me,” Rogers says. “Treatment plans are developed for each individual patient. The right procedure is chosen by the highest yield in information to help in diagnosing.” Having been a nurse practitioner for 15 years and a registered nurse for 15 years prior to that, Rogers is just getting his start at Alchemy MedSpa & Wellness Center, and he wants his patients to feel understood and taken care of above all else. “I want my patients taken care of like I want my children taken care of,” he says. “The most rewarding part of my profession is when a patient takes my hand, looks me in the eye, and says ‘Thank you for taking such good care of me.’”

What influenced you to pursue your career?

I am a third-generation nurse. My mother and grandmother were both nurses. There’s been a nurse in my family since World War II, and I am honored to continue on the legacy.

Empowering Choices

1

Dr. Alisha Armstrong has a passion for empowering her clients through education and confidenceboosting results. “Cosmetic injectables are elective and the results can be really exciting, so it is my responsibility to educate my patients on the risks and benefits of each procedure,” she says. Dr. Armstrong carefully develops treatment plans with her clients, listening to their goals and recommending procedures based on her expert knowledge. “I develop a plan that will be least invasive as possible and most cost-effective for each patient,” she explains. “I usually recommend starting with the simplest approach and working our way up to more complex treatments if needed. It is important to me that the patient feels in control every step of the way.”

What influenced you to pursue your career?

After over a decade in the high-stress pediatric emergency and trauma setting, I wanted to continue to help patients in a more positive environment. My patients are excited and look forward to seeing me now. I love helping them regain confidence and getting to know them along the way.

2 What’s the most rewarding part of your profession?

It is the greatest gift to hand a patient a mirror and see them feel excitement about their “new look.” My goal is not to make them look like someone else. It is to make them love their OWN reflection.

3

What’s the key to making a great first impression?

It is important for patients to feel confident in their provider and feel that their concerns are being valued and considered. It is scary to trust someone with procedures involving the face. Patient trust is essential, and I do not take that lightly.

4

Alisha has a credible and successful medical background, and she’s highly trained in injection services. She listens and doesn’t push you to do more than you need or try to increase how much you spend. She just doesn’t push in general. She’s not only good at what she does, but she’s the absolute sweetest!” – S. Morris

How do you choose the right procedure for your clients?

I choose the right procedure for my patient based on their own treatment goals paired with my extensive and thorough knowledge of the services we offer. The patient’s satisfaction is the most important aspect of what I do.

5 What would you consider to be your main strengths?

I take the time to really listen to my patients and their concerns. I’m trustworthy and humble as well as confident in my skills and knowledge. I love to learn so I am continuously seeking educational opportunities around the world to make me a better provider for my patients.

Inspiring Confidence

With a compassion for her clients and a love for making positive changes in the lives of others, every day is new and exciting for McKenzie Cruz. “My patients leave the clinic brighter, happier, and more confident than when they entered our doors,” Cruz says. “It is very rewarding for me to be in their corner to help them to be the best versions of themselves.” Cruz takes extra care to listen to her clients and understand their concerns and goals in detail. “I take my time in the initial consultation to thoroughly understand each patient’s medical history, aesthetic goals, and overall wellness practices,” she explains. “I usually have different approaches and options to help each individual in their unique cases, and we as a team can choose the right approach confidently.”

1What influenced you to pursue your career?

When I was a teenager, my journey with cystic hormonal acne began. By the time I was graduating high school, I felt like I had been on every medication, and the amount of personal research I had done, along with trial and error spiked my general passion for dermatology.

2

What’s the key to making a great first impression?

It’s being kind, confident, and joyful. A genuine smile and positive energy go such a long way in making someone’s day. We always want our patients to feel like family when they come to sAge, so we want our patients to feel comfortable upon arrival.

3

What would you consider to be your main strengths?

I believe my main strengths are my compassion for my patients, my drive to be the most confident and capable aesthetic provider, and my passion for always learning. Uplifting and helping people feel their best is a very fulfilling driving force that keeps me working hard.

4

From my first visit, I was impressed. They took their time to listen to what I was looking for and came up with a plan to suit my needs. I highly recommend sAge, especially for those who have never tried any aesthetic services before you can be reassured you will receive the utmost care.” - T. Rule

How do you develop a plan for each client?

My favorite thing to do when a patient enters the room is hand them the mirror and let them express their issues and goals. By using the mirror, I am able to understand what each patient sees when they look at themselves. My plans with my patients are always made jointly, uniquely, and honestly with the goal to achieve their very best results.

5

What is your best advice for clients?

My best advice for patients is to do their research before choosing a med spa. Look at your injector’s credentials, experience, and before and after photos. Take your time during your initial consultation to ask questions, and make sure you feel 100% comfortable and confident in your provider.

Against the Grain

Whether you’re looking to add more skills to your decorating arsenal or you’re setting out on your first furniture flip, understanding the different wood stains can be a little overwhelming. We’re here to help! Read on for a basic guide about when – and when not to – use some of the most popular types of wood stains.

Oil-Based

This is one of the most popular finishes and is a great choice if you’re looking for something durable that will penetrate wood. Oil-based stains are typically made from varnish, linseed oil, and petroleum distillate (aka paint thinner) and will take several hours for each coat to dry. Although the dry time is longer, that means more time to fix mistakes so this is a beginner favorite! Just make sure to use this product in a wellventilated area away from any open flames.

Water-Based

These products are similar to oil-based stains, but swap the oil for, you guessed it, water. Another major pro of water-based stains is that they have less of an odor than their oil-based counterparts. If you’re hoping to still see the beautiful and unique wood grains when you’re done with your project or want a slightly more eco-friendly option, this might be your best bet.

Gel-Based

Loved for its versatility, gel-based stains are thicker in nature but are sure to get the job done. They are similar to paint in their application, and their heaviness means they are a little more predictable than other wood stains on the market. These products

are great for types of wood prone to blotching such as pine, but be cautioned that the cleanup will be more involved and will often require paint thinner.

Lacquer

Lacquer is a surface finish that is most often applied as a transparent layer for durable protection. That being said, there are some tinted versions out there that can give a similar effect as other stains. These products can dry in as quickly as 15 minutes, so while fast, the margin for error is small.

Water-Soluble Dye

For those willing to put in a little added work, water-soluble dye can be a great option. These powdered staining products just need a bit of water and then you have a rich and vibrant dye that will penetrate deep while still showing of the wood grain. These stains, however, are more sensitive to light and will be less durable in the long run.

Metalized Dye

Yet another versatile option is metalized or metal-complex dye. Available in liquid and concentrated forms, these products are typically combined with thinners, alcohol, or water to achieve varying effects. Metalized dyes dry fast, and using a sprayer will give you the most even application.

Susan,

You are such a loyal friend, and I thank God every day that you are a part of my life. From health issues, Covid, and the many trips we have taken, you are full of memories, laughter, and friendship to me. When a crisis arises you always say, “Look for the positive, and take it one day at a time.” It’s never “you can do this” but “WE can do this,” or “WE can get through this,” which is so comforting. You are thoughtful and caring, and I can rely on you for anything, whether it be a home-cooked meal when a family member is sick, a phone call full of tears or laughter, dinner out, help with the grandchildren, or just to go on an adventure. A loyal, hardworking, genuine friend is hard to find, and those are just a few of your amazing qualities. I am so thankful to have shared this life with you, and I could never express all of the gratitude I have for you. Thanks for being so supportive and inspiring in all areas of life. Someone once said, “You never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” I am so thankful we share so many memories together. You are such a blessing!

Dear INTJ Cheryl,

I couldn’t wait to write this letter to you. From our formal mentoring match to a growing friendship ever since, I’m grateful for your influence on my life. You gave me a healthy, self-check mirror and access to new ideas that helped me grow into my 40-year-old self. With a family, volunteer commitments, and a full-time career, a few years ago I wasn’t sure where an MBA program was going to fit in my life, but it did! With your encouragement and support, I realized I could do anything I was driven to do. MyersBriggs says we are almost completely opposite personalities. I think our yin and yang is what makes our relationship so unique and special. While you may be an introvert, your growth mindset and humble and strong leadership style are rare in the business world. You are brilliantly smart, and when you speak, your humility makes people want to listen to you. Humble confidence is a rarity. Being able to witness you being an awesome mother, wife, scientist, leader, and friend all at the same time has been a real honor. Thank you for believing in me and sharing the things you see in me with me. I’m a better mom, wife, marketer, leader, and friend because of your model influence in my life.

Genna,

True friendships are like the most beautiful sunset that illuminates the sky. When I see you, my best friend, walking towards me or see your number on my phone it illuminates my heart. We may not speak every single day, but we are always connected. In 28 years, you have supported me in so many ways. We have raised our children together, spent time at a lot of school functions and family gatherings, my health was not always great, and you were always there with me. We respect each other and understand each other in an amazing way. I am the talker, and you are the observer but when we need to switch roles, we have each other’s back. The beauty of the relationship to me is that there is nothing that would stop us from being there for each other. You inspire me to keep moving forward on my dreams and be the best version of myself when my self-esteem falls a little. You make me laugh when I feel like crying, and that alone is priceless. When life is unbearable it is a blessing to share it with my friend.

Kadi,

As I write this, I can’t help but reflect on your incredible impact on my life. No matter how busy life can be, your dedication to making a difference is nothing short of inspiring. What has always impressed me, Kadi, is your boundless compassion. You are one of the most giving people I have ever met, and your generous heart has always left a lasting impression. From holding multiple board seats, constantly volunteering your time, and simply lending a listening ear to anyone in need, your generosity truly knows no bounds. I also admire your determination and grit. Watching you become the most fantastic mother of two while continuing to run and grow a successful business shows your unwavering commitment to achieving your goals. Your resilience and grace in facing challenges are admirable and motivate me to be the best at whatever I do. But beyond your actions, your constant encouragement and support have touched my life. You’ve been a guiding light, always believing in me and pushing me to pursue my dreams. Your positivity is infectious, and it’s impossible not to feel uplifted in your presence. Building Fences With Gates

A Conversation About Setting Boundaries as a Parent

In a world of constant change, parents have a serious responsibility to help their children stay safe and have healthy interactions while navigating relationships with other families. Parents won’t always agree on the rules and allowances they have for their children, but this doesn’t have to be a source of tension. Boundaries – the limits put in place to protect rules or allowances in various situations or interactions – can create clarity and help parents uphold family expectations. Here, we spoke with Dr. Tyler Rogers, a board-certified therapist, to learn more about why boundaries are helpful for parents and how to put them in place.

126 healthscopemag.com
PARENTING & RELATIONSHIPS

What does a good, healthy boundary look like?

A good, healthy boundary is clear and flexible. I often use the metaphor of a fence with a gate, where there are ways in and out, but it is defined. For example, let’s say a family wants to create a boundary about being kind to others. Kindness can be hard to notice in every situation and difficult for children to take and apply in various contexts. A specific boundary to set in this situation might be “we do not hit others.” Not hitting another person is the fence. A gate within the fence could be an allowance for hitting during a pillow fight when everyone participating understands the game and has consented to play.

Why are boundaries especially important and helpful for parents?

Boundaries let our children and family unit know what is allowed in, what stays out, what is to be kept in, and what is allowed out. The “what” in this case can be things such as thoughts, emotions, behaviors, words, time, or things. Healthy boundaries promote clarity about the proper place to express, discuss, or use these things to create respectful interactions between people or institutions. They help parents guide and empower their children to navigate their world effectively, even when a parent cannot be present.

When is the best time to set a boundary?

Timing for boundaries can vary. When entering a new situation, it may be easier to set some limits about how to behave in the situation before entering that situation. If you get into the situation and need to adjust, you certainly may. You can give your child some boundaries about being a visitor in another person’s home before they visit. You may learn of something after their visit that may cause you to revisit a conversation with your child about new, modified expectations for visiting another person’s home.

Do you have any advice for a parent setting a boundary with another parent for the first time?

As our world continues to change, we will probably need to become more willing than we have been to enter into conversations with other parents about media use, weapons, and nutrition. The increasing amount of variance in culture from home to home means we either have to be more upfront about some issues or be more accepting when our children are exposed to things outside of the home that we see differently. I think the best thing to do when setting a boundary with another parent is to be curious and ask questions about their boundaries or views on topics. Their “fence” may have a good reason for being the way it is, and while you may not agree with it, you may find the “gate” by asking questions first.

How should a parent respond if another parent pushes back on a boundary?

If another parent pushes back on your boundary, it may be good to suggest an alternative. Again, good boundaries are clear and flexible, so if a parent wants you to concede and allow your child to do something that you are not in agreement with, you can acknowledge the general desire, which in many cases may be connection and relationship, and propose an alternative. You can also get curious and try to understand why they feel so strongly about this issue, which may make it easier to find an alternative solution.

healthscopemag.com 129 FLU-FIGHTING FOODS / BY THE SPOONFUL / KEVIN HARVEY’S LOWER BODY BLAST food & fitness

Flu-Fighting Foods

Flu season is around the corner, and while preventative measures such as vaccination and hand washing can mitigate risk, up to 20% of the U.S. population is infected by influenza each year. When sick, it’s crucial to stay hydrated and maintain a healthy, nutritious diet. The right foods can soothe flu symptoms and help your body get the sustenance it needs to fight the virus. Read on to learn which foods to reach for –and which not to – next time you or a loved one is recovering from the flu.

Fluids

Your body needs fluids to function at its best, and this is especially true when sick. Fluids can also be easier to stomach when feeling unwell. In addition to drinking plenty of water, consider the following fluids for their soothing and nourishing benefits:

• Hot, herbal teas can ease sore throats, plus the steam helps clear up stuffy noses. Try adding honey for additional soothing properties and to reduce coughing.

• Broths, including chicken, beef, and vegetable, are a nutritious fluid option. Rich in antioxidants and easy on the stomach, broths are a great alternative to solid food.

• Electrolyte-rich beverages replenish important minerals your body needs and boost hydration. Make sure to monitor sugar intake, as excess sugar can cause inflammation and hinder the healing process.

Popsicles

Sugar-free popsicles made from 100% fruit juice are another way to stay hydrated and work in extra nutrients. They can soothe irritated throats and offer a cooling effect when dealing with fever.

Chicken Soup

Chicken soup is the go-to food when sick, and for good reason. With a hydrating broth, nutrient-packed

veggies, and protein-rich chicken, it’s the perfect well-rounded meal. Studies show that the ingredients in chicken noodle soup can reduce inflammation and even improve your immune system’s response.

Carbohydrates

Snack on low-fiber and low-fat carbs such as pretzels, saltine crackers, and toast. Working these easy-to-digest foods into your diet can help fuel your body and keep hunger at bay.

Vitamin C-Rich Fruits & Veggies

Vitamin C strengthens your immune system as it fights the flu. Reach for citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruits, along with veggies such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and potatoes. If solid food isn’t appetizing, try substituting natural fruit or vegetable juices to pack vitamins into a liquid diet.

Ginger

Ginger can ease upset stomachs and nausea and has antiinflammatory properties that help fight infection. Add shredded or powdered ginger to foods or have a mug of ginger tea.

Foods to Avoid

Some foods can actually worsen flu symptoms. Steer clear of foods high in fats and sugar, along with dairy products, which can worsen congestion. Beverages such as coffee, soda, and energy drinks do more harm than good, as their high caffeine levels are dehydrating. Avoid alcohol, which weakens the immune system and keeps your body from fighting at its strongest.

Place a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, and add in olive oil. Once heated, add the prepared vegetables and minced garlic to your pot. Sauté until the bell peppers are soft and the yellow onion is soft and slightly translucent. Add ground turkey, stirring continuously until the turkey is fully cooked, 7 to 10 minutes. Add tomato paste and sugar. Mike’s Hot Honey is great for an added kick, but regular sugar or honey will work as well. Thoroughly mix in the pot, and cook down for a few minutes. Add rinsed beans, crushed tomatoes, and broth to your pot. Mix well. Stir in the salt and pepper, red pepper flakes, chili powder, cumin, dried oregano, and smoked Tabasco. Allow your chili to simmer on low heat for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, or transfer the mixture to a crockpot to cook on low for several hours for enhanced flavor. When you’re ready, ladle the chili into bowls, garnish with cheese, plain Greek yogurt, and more smoked Tabasco. Enjoy!

is my fall and winter go-to! It’s super easy and always a crowdpleaser, plus it makes for great leftovers throughout our week. I always recommend that if you are going to make chili, use what you already have in your kitchen, and customize it to your liking. I love topping it with Cheez-Its and smoked Tabasco!”

Kevin Harvey’s Lower Body Blast

“What I love about leg workout circuits like this one is that they burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time and are great for those with limited time or equipment. This workout will hit every part of your legs. By using a timer, you can make the circuit easier or harder based on your fitness level. If you’re a beginner, start by doing 30 seconds of work followed by 30 seconds of rest and run through all the movements one after the other in a circuit fashion completing 3 rounds. For those more advanced, increase work periods and decrease rest periods.”
