We host a series of events and activities throughout the year to give you a taste of what life is like at Northumberland College. From open events and tasters to careers fairs and experience days, there is no better way to explore everything we have to offer.

You can speak to our expert teaching staff, meet fellow students, and explore our amazing facilities. Our friendly team will be on hand to help with everything from careers guidance to advice on the financial support available.

Open events

Held throughout the academic year

Our open events are the perfect opportunity for year 10 and year 11 pupils to visit our campuses, find out more about our courses, see our amazing facilities, meet our expert teaching staff and get a feel for the college atmosphere.

During the events, which are usually held on an evening or weekend, our Information, Advice and Guidance teams are also available to answer any questions you may have about finance, welfare or learning support.

These exclusive events are the second step of your application journey and tailored to school leavers who have applied for one of our courses starting in September.

These interactive sessions give you a flavour of your chosen course and help you get to know our teaching staff and your classmates.

Step-up events

June & July

The final step of your application journey before you start, our step-up events give you the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a Northumberland College student.

You will take part in interactive lessons following an example timetable, have lunch in our campus cafés and be given information about how to enrol on your course once you have received your GCSE results.

Our recent multi-million-pound investments in industry-standard facilities supports you to study in the latest, state-of-the-art teaching and learning environments.

In 2026, we will move to a £54 million purposebuilt campus at Wansbeck Business Park which will include an advanced manufacturing, engineering, automotive and construction industries centre, a hub for young people and adults with SEND, and more.

Kirkley Hall Campus will be equipped with new automation, robotics, agritech and engineering classrooms and workshops, as well as a 360-degree immersive hub, new barns, technical farm resources, sheep handling and shearing facilities and an agricultural area.

Ashington Campus

The town of Ashington is home to our largest campus with industry-standard engineering and construction workshops, commercial hair and beauty salon, a simulated health hub, and 40-seat commercial restaurant.

Kirkley Hall Campus

Set in 400-acres of beautiful Northumberland countryside, our specialist land based Kirkley

Hall Campus includes Northumberland College Zoo with over 200 species of animals, an equine centre of excellence, a military academy, a working farm with agritech, engineering workshops and sheep handling facilities.

The campus also includes an arboriculture area, walled gardens, veterinary science labs, an inspiring SEND centre, a 360-degree immersive hub and student accommodation.

Berwick Campus

Our Berwick Campus offers a supporting and welcoming environment which includes an automotive engineering workshop, hair and beauty salon, and health and science facilities.

There are many opportunities for you to thrive, explore, develop, and learn at Northumberland College, but some days you may just want to enjoy campus life between your classes, meet your friends and relax in one of our cafés and relaxed outdoor spaces, or take part in one of our youth activities and clubs.

Food & drink

Grab a bite to eat and catch up with your friends. We have several eating areas around our campuses offering a wide variety of healthy and nutritious meals sandwiches, drinks, and snacks. All students, regardless of income, will have access to a free breakfast if needed.

A large variety of delicious hot and cold food is available throughout the day in our Campus Cafés, offering regular meal deals

and ‘theme days’ with many international dishes you can try.

With a calm and idyllic vibe and views of the beautiful Northumberland countryside, our Orangery is the perfect place to unwind. You can also grab a coffee or one of our delicious sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes, and cakes.

Enrichment

We are committed to providing an environment where students can grow and develop by offering a wide range of wellbeing activities across our campuses. Join in volunteering and social action projects with the Duke of Edinburgh Award, National Citizenship Service and Good for Me, Good for FE, one of our college clubs and societies or take part in weekly themed events.

IT support

We have many computers with an extensive range of software, available for students to use on a drop-in basis. Students are expected to improve their awareness of, and skills in, information technology (IT). There are many staff who can support you in your use of IT. The College has campus-wide Wi-Fi, which enables students to access the internet and complete college work using their own, or college, devices.

Future Ready Hubs

Our Future Ready Hubs will help you find all the resources you need for your studies, including study support such as developing your research skills, exam preparation and help with referencing alongside printing, photocopying, and scanning facilities.

We also have books, eBooks, journals, DVDs and a range of online resources, including your course textbooks.

If you need help locating a resource or using the facilities in the Future Ready Hub, you can speak to one of our friendly and experienced team who are there to assist you.

All resources are free to borrow, we just ask that they are returned in good condition by their due date.

Our Future Ready Hubs also offer a range of support and wellbeing services (see pages 28-29).

• A centre of excellence for electrical, mechanical, robotics and automation, automotive, green transport, construction, housing, retrofit and wider renewable technologies.

Revolutionising education & skills in Northumberland

In 2026 we will move our award-winning provision at Ashington Campus to a purpose-built net zero campus at Wansbeck Business Park.

Supported by the Department for Education (DfE), the campus will offer state-of-the-art

academic and technical facilities aligned to local, regional, and national skills priorities.

Featuring three buildings, the transformative project will create an immersive industry experience for thousands of learners and revolutionise the education and skills landscape.

Walking

Ashington Campus is an approximate 30-minute walk from the town centre and accessible by pedestrian links.

Bus services

The campus is serviced by several local bus routes including Northumberland College’s transport scheme, with buses available from locations across Northumberland, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and North Tyneside.

Train services

From 2024, a new train station will open on the Northumberland Line, bringing passenger trains back into service between Ashington and Newcastle.

The station will be an approximate 30-minute walk to our current Ashington Campus and short walk to our new campus at Wansbeck Business Park.

Plan your bus route to college here

For most students, especially given Northumberland’s rural locations, travelling to college by bus is a great option. Public transport is an environmentally friendly and a reliable way to get to campus. We understand you may be anxious about travel, after all this might be a big change from your normal school journey. By working out your route and doing a testrun before you start college can help build your confidence.

Through our transport scheme, we offer transportation to and from our Ashington and Kirkley Hall campuses across Northumberland.

Wherever you are travelling from, your journey to Northumberland College is the first step on the road to an exciting future.

Support with travelling to college

If your household income is less than £30,000 and you live more than 1 mile from your campus of study, you could be eligible for travel support.

If your household income is between £30,000£50,000 and you live more than 3 miles from your campus, you may also be eligible.

• If you live in Northumberland: You will need to apply for travel support through the Northumberland County Council Post-16 Student Travel Scheme at www.northumberland.gov.uk (eligibility criteria applies).

• If you live outside Northumberland: You may receive support through the 16-19 Bursary Fund. Travel will be offered in the form of a monthly allowance or independent travel.

Careers Guidance Service

We provide a free, accessible, impartial, and confidential Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) service to help current and potential students make well-informed choices about their course, progression, future learning opportunities and career goals.

Some of the services on offer include oneto-one appointments, career and CV writing workshops, and mock job interviews. Our CEIAG team is available at open events, by emailing guidance@educationpartnershipne. ac.uk or by calling 0300 770 6000.

Northumberland College has received matrix accreditation. This is the national quality standard for any organisation that delivers information, advice and guidance on learning and work.

Financial support

Students aged 16-18 years old are not required to pay course fees on most of our full-time study programmes. You could be eligible for financial assistance while at college including help with course-related, transport and kit costs, childcare, free meals, or bursaries, depending on your circumstances.

We are all different, and sometimes our differences can impact how we learn. Our Learning Support team can provide tailored services to meet your needs including one-toone and small group sessions, in-class support or specialist equipment and technology.

We can provide a wide range of counselling and support services for any personal and health-related issues to ensure you get the most of your time with us.

Safeguarding and supporting the wellbeing of our students is vitally important to us. Our Stay Safe initiative allows you to report any concerns you have directly to our Safeguarding team who will respond straight away and provide the necessary help and support.

You will have weekly Self, Society and Skills (SSS) sessions and workshops to develop your knowledge, skills, and behaviours to help you discover your interests and talents.

Skills competitions

Some of our students have competed at the Young’s Seafood Chef of the Year, The Guild of Bricklayers, Horticulturist of the Year and the AHT National Finals against colleges from across the country!

Throughout the year we host a series of inspirational careers fairs attended by leading local and national employers and universities to showcase the opportunities available to you when you leave college.

Recreational sport & games

For students who enjoy the fun and social side of college life, our Youth Work team runs a series of health and wellbeing activities as well as weekly table tennis, dance, football sessions and more!

Community Collectives

Our Community Collectives group represents students from a range of backgrounds coming together to share insights about their cultural values, beliefs, and customs.

They work together to organise events to celebrate the rich diversity of our college community, showcasing different traditions, languages, foods, and customs to foster a deeper understanding and respect for one another.

Choosing what courses to study at college can be tough, especially when there are so many on offer. Thinking about the career path you’re interested in and understanding the type of course that suits you, means you will engage in a course that you are passionate about which will guide you towards an exciting and rewarding future.

T Levels

Our T Level qualifications will give you the opportunity to experience an industry while studying. You will gain a high-quality, technical qualification and job-specific skills and knowledge through a combination of classroom learning and placement to develop practical and technical skills.

Technical courses

These courses are designed to prepare you for a career or higher-level study. You will gain skills for a specific sector and experience a more practical way of learning to develop your skills and knowledge.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships can help you get started in a new career by combining study with real work experience and mean you can be earning a wage while you’re studying from day one. You will learn ‘hands on’ in a specific job role and be given a fast-track route into your chosen career.

ESOL

Our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses offer more than just learning basic English skills. The curriculum offers a gateway to increasing confidence, career advancement, and empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds to thrive in an interconnected world.

Foundations

Our Foundation Learning programme is tailored for young people with special educational needs and disabilities. We offer a varied and specialised curriculum delivered by specialist staff, to make sure you achieve your goals, gain your independence and fulfil your own unique potential.

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements vary for each course. We offer courses at various levels, so even if you don’t have any formal qualifications, we are confident we will have the right course or subject for you.

ENTRY LEVEL & FOUNDATION

“I have no formal qualifications.”

Entry level courses are great for helping you to improve your basic reading, writing and IT skills. Many programmes are tailored to your individual needs and have a flexible approach.

Entry Levels 1, 2 or 3.

“I have at least 1 GCSE at grade 1.”

“I have at least 2 GCSEs at grade 3.”

These courses help you gain an introductory knowledge of a subject area and can prepare you to progress further.

These intermediate courses will provide you with a route into a career or prepare you for higher level study.

“I have at least 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above.” *

These advanced courses will challenge you and develop your understanding of a subject area, preparing you for employment or degree level study.

Studying English and maths at college

English and maths are important life skills that will support you in achieving the most from your studies and progression to your chosen career.

Employers and universities require them, and GCSE English and maths qualifications could be the difference between being accepted onto a university course, securing employment, or gaining a promotion.

If you have achieved:

• A grade 4-9 in GCSE English and/or maths at school, you will develop your English and maths skills throughout your course at college.

• A grade 1-3 in GCSE English and/or maths at school, you will re-sit your GCSE qualification at college.

• A grade U in GCSE English and/or maths at school, we can discuss the best English and maths study options for you at college.

Real World Maths

If you are a Level 2 student, you will receive ‘Real World Maths’ sessions tailored and relevant to the sector you are studying, where you will see first-hand how the skills you are developing are essential to your career progression.

Covering a range of topics in farming and working outdoors, you will gain a wide range of practical skills and knowledge with the opportunity to develop these working on our college farms.

This course is for 16–18-year-olds who want to study full-time and English is a second language. Our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses offer more than just learning basic English skills, they are designed to empower individuals from diverse backgrounds to thrive in an interconnected world.

Our ESOL curriculum goes beyond grammar and vocabulary; it offers a gateway to increasing confidence, career advancement, and those all-important meaningful connections.

If English is not your first language, we can assist and support you to develop your English skills. This will support you in your next steps, whether in education or employment in the UK. In addition, there will be opportunities to extend your learning experience by accessing a range of different curriculum subject areas.

You will receive pastoral support with a focus upon your engagement, progress and wellbeing.

As an ESOL student, you will be part of the college community studying and socialising with other students from a broad range of cultures. Our Football Academy, delivered in partnership with Northern Premier League side Morpeth Town AFC, gives you the chance to combine your studies with an elite training programme and professional coaching in first-class training facilities, competitive matches, and performance analysis.

The academy is open to a wide variety of subject areas and follows a ‘dual career’ pathway, offering fantastic opportunities in both education and sport. You can have a previous qualification like a degree and still start an apprenticeship. An apprenticeship is a real job where you learn, gain experience, and get paid.

At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have the qualifications, skills, and knowledge you need to progress in your chosen career.

To become an apprentice, you must be 16 or over, not be in full-time education and live in England.

Attend an open event: If you are undecided, visit one of our open events where you can speak to our expert Information, Advice and Guidance teams.

Apply: It’s easy to apply for a course. You can apply online at northumberland.ac.uk or in person at an open event.

Accept your offer: After you’ve applied, you will receive a conditional offer which will be subject to you achieving the entry requirements of your course. When you receive your offer, please accept this as soon as possible. You may also need to complete an audition, trial or assessment depending on the course you’ve applied for.

Financial support

Did you know that we can help you with the cost of college? Students aged 16-18 years old are not required to pay course fees on most

of our full-time study programmes. If your household income is less than £30,000, we can support eligible students with transport to college as well as course-related costs such as uniform, kit, equipment, books, trips and UCAS fees.

If you are in receipt of Universal Credit or Child Tax Credit, and your income does not exceed the thresholds, your child could be eligible for free college meals.
