and faith communities to provide services, resources and caring adults to address the needs of the most vulnerable in our society. Founders Gary and Tammie Webb’s passion was to reach out to the growing population of unsupervised youth aged 12-18 who were gathering after school with nothing productive to occupy their time and who were being tempted by negative influences, including gangs, drugs and violent behavior.
Gary and Tammie knew these youth were making choices that would impact the rest of their lives and were determined to establish a program to offer positive activities and adult mentors who would not only encourage them to take the “right path,” but could show them how through direct assistance and role modeling. Area residents are invited to support the One Bright Star Toy Drive by donating toys or volunteerting to help wrap gifts, or at one of the Christmas parties. Gift wrapping and other prep work will be completed December 13–15, with the parties taking place December 16–17. CJ Kids believes that no child should miss out on the fun and magic of Christmas. As a result, the nonprofit organization partners with businesses and organizations within the community to support its One Bright Star Toy Drive. This annual event ensures that these forgotten children get to have the same exciting and joyous holiday that so many families take for granted. “OCJ Kids will host its 10th Annual One Bright Star Christmas Bowling Party this month,” says Tammie Webb, director of operations. “We understand that children in foster care have been exposed to traumatic and heartbreaking experiences in their young lives. The One Bright Star Christmas Party provides a place for them to celebrate, laugh, feel love and begin to heal. We create family and connection for these children.” The children are invited to a fun and exciting holiday party, with plenty of activities and snacks to eat. The organization also makes sure that each of these children gets a gift with their name on it – a small but powerful way to let them know that someone cares about them personally. Webb continued, “This year, over 600 foster children who currently live in a group home will celebrate with our staff and volunteers and memories will be created!” OCJ Kids (Opportunity Community and Justice for Kids), founded in 1992, formed an alliance with the business

One Year Later: Put In The Work, Reap The Rewards
In the December 2016 issue, I wrote about my experiences with my son’s marching band (Choose Light — Move Forward — Don’t Give Up). Last year at this time, “The Band” had missed qualifying for the State Festival by .025 points. They were disappointed; but, inspired by the best score they had achieved to-date, determined to work even harder next season. Here we are, one year later. Aching from the seemingly endless hours of practice, sunburnt and sleep-deprived, but nevertheless resolute, they did it! At High Spirited their final regular season competition, Cupcakes The Band clinched a spot at the State Festival. The cheers from their section as the score was announced was deafening. Some of the other teams commented on The Band’s level of excitement, so they told their tale: The Year of .025. The other bands got it. Everyone had been there at some point. This group of young adults has been a source of inspiration for me. They come from broadly diverse backgrounds and outside of marching band may not have much in common. But they choose to come together, every day, and work together toward a common goal…and reap the rewards of their shared success. One more step toward commonality, and a reason for hopefulness in this crazy world. I wish you all a beautiful holiday season, and until next year, all my best.

Monthlong Holiday Celebration Returns To Scottsdale Scottsdazzle brings signature events, massive tree, décor and more The holiday season is upon us, and the City of Scottsdale is back with its monthlong holiday celebration: Scottsdazzle. The event, which kicked off in late November with a tree-lighting and holiday sing-a-long, is sure to make the holiday season more festive. The monthlong celebration will incorporate several signature events scattered throughout December as well as other ongoing festivities and specialty artwork: • Waterfront Art installations – PRISMATICA has 25 giant revolving prism sculptures placed along the Scottsdale Waterfront. Visitors can walk among them to see city life in every color of the spectrum and turn the prisms to make the colors dance. After sunset, the enormous interactive kaleidoscope’s illusory effects reach a crescendo. The rotation of the prisms also triggers variable-intensity bell music. Reflection Rising by Poetic Kinetics will engage the area along the Arizona Canal at the Scottsdale Waterfront. The suspended kinetic sculpture is designed to maximize the experience for viewers throughout the space. Beneath an open sky, tethered elusively on the cusp of flight, Reflection Risingis a constant reminder of nature moving around us. •
Canal Concerts – Various artists will perform live music on Soleri Plaza each Saturday night starting December 2 and continuing December 9, 16 and 23, 7–8:30pm.

Santa Wine Around – Join the Scottsdale Wine Trail wineries for a wine tasting extravaganza December 2 at 6pm. Arrive dressed as Santa or Mrs. Claus and receive a commemorative wineglass.

The Scottsdale Community College (SCC) Dance Program presents “Images in Motion,” a dance concert performed by SCC’s three resident companies, Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2. In the tradition of inspiring productions, SCC dancers will demonstrate their artistic and physical excellence through a variety of dance styles. Teaspressa Opens First Pop-Up Shop Phoenix-based gourmet beverage company Teaspressa opened its first pop-up shop, expanding its location and offerings in October at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West. Taliesin West is home to the School of Architecture at
Taliesin and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. The new pop-up shop location offers signature handcrafted recipes, such as London Fog, Caramel Cape, Black Rose and Swiss Ivory. The signature drink recipes are comparable to lattes, mochas and other gourmet coffee beverages, but made with the option to choose signature shots of concentrated tea or Dapper & Wise espresso shots, a specialty coffee roaster based in Portland, Oregon. Teaspressa is a pioneer in gourmet tea preparation, handcrafting a hybrid beverage that combines the best of both the coffee and tea worlds. Its signature tea blends are created using a patented tea concentration technology developed by the company’s founder, Allison DeVane. Youth Cooking Classes Feature Local Producers
Valley-based Evening Entertainment Group, and celebrity designer and HGTV star, Alison Victoria, announced their latest Scottsdale landmark, Casa Amigos and Sky Lanes. Both are housed inside the soaring two-story space previously known as Livewire, located at 7340 Indian Plaza in Scottsdale. Scheduled to open in mid-December, Casa Amigos is transforming the bottom floor into a stylish, spicy and downright sexy take on the traditional Mexican restaurant and lounge, while Sky Lanes upstairs will be a music-centric boutique bowling alley featuring bottle service late into the night. Unspooling across the entire ground floor of this expanded, 16,000-plus square-foot building, Casa Amigos will import authentic Mexican fare, including signature buildyour-own guacamole menus and late-night dining. Given the ongoing demand for local products combined with the popularity of cooking shows for all ages, Scramble – A Breakfast & Lunch Joint’s Scottsdale location has been continuing its “Think Global – Eat Local” Junior Edition for 2017. The final event of the year is scheduled for Wednesday, December 13, 6–7:30pm, and will feature ways to use bread in recipes including banana bread pudding with croissants and meatloaf, from local bread purveyor Strictly From Scratch. “Think Global – Eat Local” Junior Edition includes quarterly cooking classes for youths ages 6 to 16. The Contemporary Watercolor Artists of Arizona (CWA) announced an exhibition of creative water media paintings to be held at the Holland Gallery of Fine Art December 14–January 26. Paintings will be on sale just in time for the holidays. This show of water media paintings includes a wide range of both abstract and realistic work including landscapes, portraits and other subjects. Many of the pieces were responses to monthly challenges issued to members. Work created in transparent watercolor, acrylic paint, gouache and colored inks will be shown. CWA began in 1969 and held its first exhibition in 1972 with the intention of pushing each member to expand their capabilities and to reach higher levels of achievement. Book By Local Authors Wins Prestigious Literary Award

A children’s book written by local authors, “Chloe and the Desert Heroes: A Tale of Adventure in the Sonoran Desert,” was awarded third place out of 54 entries in the 2017 Arizona Literary Award, children’s literature division. “It is a good feeling to be recognized for something that has been a labor of love and has done so much good in promoting conservation and stewardship of the Sonoran Desert,” said Diane L–R: Brenda Olive, Diane Vaszily and Abby Hemingway, members of The Desert Awareness Committee Vaszily, spokesperson for the Scottsdale-based Desert Awareness Committee. The book that has delighted fourth graders in the North Valley for the last two years is the product of a collaboration of local residents affiliated with Desert Awareness, a heritage program of the Foothills Community Foundation. Writing credits include Abby Hemingway, Kathleen Hindle, Brenda Olive, Phyllis Strupp and Vaszily. Original color illustrations were created by Judy Speer and Georgia Taylor. “Chloe and the Desert Heroes” is a comingof-age tale about 12-year-old Chloe who gets lost in the desert when her dog chases a rabbit. She encounters familiar desert animals – the book’s heroes – who help her learn some important lessons about the Sonoran Desert, and, coincidentally, how to deal with school bullies. The book has become a supplement of the fourth grade Arizona Studies curriculum, enhancing understanding of the desert ecosystem through a hands-on desert classroom program and field experience. Community Carnival Kicks Off Chanukah Celebration Congregation Beth Israel’s Chanen Preschool will present its Eighth Annual Chanukah Carnival in celebration of the holiday. Open to the public and offering something for every age group, this multigenerational event will include bounce houses, a rock-climbing wall and an exclusive shopping experience. This year, the Carnival will offer old favorites like train and pony rides, petting zoo and face painting. Chanen Preschool will partner with Congregation Beth Israel’s Mark L. Around the country and in in our own community, more families than ever before are confronting the tragic realities of drug addiction. Because of the nation’s opioid epidemic, drug overdoses are the leading cause of death of Americans under 50 years old, and it’s tearing families apart. Opioids have created the deadliest MAYOR drug crisis in the nation’s history, and City of Phoenix it’s hitting Arizona especially hard. In 602.262.7111 fact, opioid-related deaths in our state www.phoenix.gov are occurring at a rate nearly double compared to last year. In the last four and a half months alone, at least 564 Arizonans have died a suspected opioid-related death. That’s a tragedy, and a public health crisis. This is a crisis that didn’t have to happen – and it’s a direct result of how drug companies engaged in fraudulent marketing to minimize the risks associated with opioids, including their highly addictive nature. As a result, when many fathers, mothers, sons and daughters were prescribed what seemed like safe prescription painkillers after a car accident or minor surgery, they were put not on a road to recovery, but on a path to addition. For many drug companies, profits came before people. The burden placed on taxpayers has been immense. The White House Council of Economic Advisers estimates that the cost of the opioid crisis was $504 billion in 2015 alone – and the crisis is getting worse. The strain in Phoenix is real too. Overdoses are so common that every Phoenix Fire Department engine and rescue vehicle carries doses of naloxone, an opioid antidote – and overdoses that require an ambulance trip are happening more frequently than ever before. Police detectives and patrol officers experience additional demands in response to opioidrelated calls, and taxpayers are paying additional jail costs. The crisis is creating new threats to our neighborhoods and even contributing to the City’s homelessness challenges. Phoenix is taking action. Earlier this month, the City Council approved a plan put forward by myself and Councilwomen Thelda Williams and Debra Stark to take legal action against the drug companies and distributors who created this crisis. They must be held accountable. Not only do we have a moral obligation to act, but I believe that the resources recovered from this action can better equip first responders and neighborhoods with the tools they need to respond to the crisis, as well as help those suffering from addiction. Although many cities across the country are taking this battle to court, Phoenix is the first in Arizona, and I’m hopeful that our approach will encourage others to take action as well. We can’t solve this crisis alone – but if we work together, we can turn the tide and give Arizona families confronting this epidemic the help they need.

Desert Botanical Garden welcomes residents and visitors to its iconic holiday event – Las Noches de las Luminarias – which runs through December 30. The Garden will be aglow for 21 magical evenings as guests experience the beauty of more than 8,000 hand-lit luminaria bags, thousands of white twinkle lights and dramatic desert views. As an exciting addition to this year’s event, visitors will experience the bold, monumental sculptures of Japanese-American artist Jun Kaneko, which will be on display throughout Garden trails. The Phoenix Metro Chamber Foundation (PMCF) announced that its annual Charity Golf Tournament, designed to benefit both the American Academy of Pediatrics (Arizona Chapter) and the March of Dimes in 2018, will be held Saturday, May 12. The tournament will take place at Troon North Golf Club, located at 10320 East Dynamite Boulevard in Scottsdale. The event, which begins at 7:30am, includes 18 holes of golf, a four-course lunch, on-course entertainments and activities, a raffle and auction and, of course, prizes and awards. Symphony Orchestra To Perform Holiday Pops Concert North Valley Symphony Orchestra (NVSO) will present a charming evening and matinee performance of seasonal favorites. Horses Help Introduces New Program For Military & First Responders This fall, Horses Help launched a new program, Operation Unbridled, for those who are past or present military, police or fire personnel. Operation Unbridled offers a time of camaraderie where participants can learn and hone the art of horsemanship. PATH International-certified instructors and well-trained horses will provide a unique outdoor equine related activity that is presented in a welcoming and relaxed environment. Participants in Operation Unbridled may choose to attend for reasons including discovering a new hobby, decompressing from the job or reconnecting with horse-related activities. Operation Unbridled is a groundwork only program that focuses on teaching safe, quality horse handling skills ranging from grooming, leading through trail course obstacles, to desensitizing horses to various objects. As horses are innately responsive to body language and tone of voice, participants will also practice verbal and non-verbal communication with their equine team member. For several years, Horses Help has offered a program geared towards the military community, but as the military and first responder communities are often closely intertwined, the facility has expanded services to now offer Operation Unbridled. Horses Help, founded in 1987, has been a leader in providing safe, quality Equine Assisted Learning and Activities and is a PATH International Premier Accredited Center. Fountain Hills Theater (FHT) has taken the spirit of the season, wrapped it in beautiful original melodies and tied it with all the holiday magic and wonder of childhood. Based on the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol tells the tale of curmudgeonly miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by the ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future hoping to change his destiny and save his soul. Follow Scrooge through a series of strange and magical journeys, where he ultimately discovers the true spirit of the holiday season. This delightful musical, an original adaptation, is written by FHT artistic director Peter J. Hill, with music and lyrics by Hill and Jay Melberg. A Christmas Carol: The Musical runs November 30 – December 24 on even dates. Set in a theatre, Inspecting Carol deals with a regional theatre company that is rehearsing its annual production of A Christmas Carol, its cash cow, when it gets news of the impending arrival of an
inspector from the National Endowment for the Arts to review their work. The actor playing Tiny Tim gets a better offer and leaves the production in the lurch. When
an aspiring actor of somewhat questionable talent arrives to audition, he is mistaken for the inspector and given the part of the child actor. The company goes on to stage an accident filled, error laden production of their play. Inspecting Carol runs December 1–23 on odd dates. FHT Youth Theater reprises it’s holiday hit, Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells! – this time with a brand new cast. Junie B. They were rescued by Rescue Pals, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and local dog rescue/adoption organization. Even though they are well taken care of, they are very tired of living in a kennel. Mojo, approximately five years old, is an American Bulldog. He is affectionate and smart. He does well with adults, kids and other dogs. He loves his daily walks. Charlie is a mixed breed sweetie and about three years old. He loves to walk and listens very well. He would make a wonderful addition to any family. Each of these dogs would do best in a home with a nice back yard and a doggy door. his year, the Town of Carefree is building upon the decade-long tradition of the Carefree Christmas Festival – and expanding the holiday season, while also furthering community and business involvement. Preserving the sense of community for locals while also showcasing all the color and beauty of Carefree to new visitors will be the focal point of the expanded Christmas in Carefree celebration. The seasonal celebration is set to run from December 1 through 23, and will include highlights of an official tree lighting at the iconic Carefree Sundial, Carefree Snow Village (featuring real snow), an open-air Christmas Market, concerts, a comedy show, arts and crafts, gingerbread build-off, Luminaria Tribute in the Garden, and a new daytime community parade by the Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce, just to name a few. “The expanded footprint will allow for even more visitors to enjoy the festivities over an extended period,” said Carefree Mayor Les Peterson. “This will complement typical business hours and also provide a platform for nonprofits from all over the desert foothills area to engage with the community and showcase their cause.” Evenings in the enchanting, four-acre Carefree Desert Gardens will be adorned with a professional holiday light display. Meanwhile, the daytime hours will be better positioned for the community parade December 9 – while also allowing for more community involvement, reduced safety risks and enhanced exposure of Carefree’s pedestrian-friendly business district. There will also be special appearances by Beatle Tribute Band Marmalade Skies, singer-songwriter Ryan Sims and comedian-actor Jill Kimmel, who is the younger sister of the late-night talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel will pay tribute to veterans and first responders by performing a comedy show just for them. Admission will be an unwrapped toy for the annual toy drive, which supports children of a family selected by the Foothills Food Bank. All toys will be delivered by the Carefree Rural Metro Fire Department. The Cave Creek Unified School District will also include performances from the Cactus Shadows High School Jazz Band as well as various elementary and middle school choirs in addition to the bell ringers and choir from the local Presbyterian church. There are a limited number of streets serving the northeast quadrant of the metropolitan area that are not interrupted by the nearby mountainous terrain. Several of the roads of regional significance bisect the Town of Carefree – Carefree Highway, Scottsdale Road (Tom Darlington), MAYOR Pima Road and Cave Creek Roads. Town of Carefree The majority of travel along these routes is generated 480.488.3686 from daily commuters living in nearby communities and www.carefree.org regularly traveling to work and school. This traffic will continue to increase in the future as growth in these adjacent communities continues. The Town of Carefree has little impact or control over this future external growth; however, Carefree’s public streets will continue to absorb the impacts.

Thanks to Jill Kimmel, there’s one thing the expanded Christmas in Carefree (www.christmasincarefree.com) promises to be: filled with laughter. Last December, the proud Arizona resident, and sister of popular late-night television show host Jimmy Kimmel, was performing on her fifth tour with Armed Forces Entertainment, spending Christmas and New Year’s Eve with American troops stationed overseas. This holiday season, Jill will be in Carefree, performing standup Friday, December 8, 4–5:15pm, in the Carefree Desert Garden’s Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion. It is critical to note that the vast majority (over 98 percent) of the Town is and will remain residential. However, adjacent to the intersections of these regional streets are a few remaining undeveloped properties. These undeveloped properties are less desirable for low-density, spacious homes that define the community. Therefore, alternative land uses that complement this regional traffic patterns should be considered to provide these commuters/consumers the opportunity to stop within the community and enjoy quality goods/products. As a result, the town’s sales tax-centric revenue stream will be enhanced so the Town can continue to provide its citizens Town services such as fire, police, public works and community development services without the need for a town-specific property tax like many nearby communities. Indeed, change is inevitable. The challenge is to address and respond to anticipated changes with appropriate responses. We believe that limited increases in commercial zoning along these major traffic arteries maintains the rural character of Carefree while at the same time preparing Carefree to adapt and thrive in the future as well.

Purchasers will decorate their bags to celebrate a cherished memory or the life of a loved one and the decorated bags will be displayed and lit in the Carefree Desert Gardens December 15–24. What do you suppose is creating this phenomenon?” As the students gaze in awe, one small voice suggests the possibility of an alien tomato, while another makes a connection to previous lessons about the essential elements that a plant needs to grow. And this is just the beginning. It is these curious questions that light the spark for students to be creative, communicate effectively, collaborate with their peers and think critically about what it is they are investigating. “At Foothills Academy College Preparatory, we have taken this one step further: we are on a mission to break down classroom walls,” says Dr. Jane White, principal at Foothills Academy. “Quite literally, the simple questions above have blossomed into a fully functioning outdoor classroom garden – designed, planted and cared for by Foothills Academy students and the broader school community. With many gracious thanks to the continued support of Kiwanis Club of Carefree, Foothills Academy College Preparatory students in grades K–9 are actively engaged in the school’s STEAM (integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) program.” Most recently, Kiwanis Club of Carefree granted Foothills Academy $30,000 to further expand Foothills Academy’s STEAM offerings. Led by Mary Beth Abbey, M.Ed., Foothills Academy’s STEAM director, Kiwanis grant funds are utilized to purchase the hands-on, minds-on resources to support our STEAM curriculum, designed to purposefully integrate STEM with industry training standards.
“This is our take on adding the ‘A’ in STEAM,” says Dr. White. “It is the ‘human element’.” This includes development of skills in problem solving and team building. Students are encouraged to look inward, identifying individual strengths, and outward to capitalize on the strengths of others in order to arrive at more effective solutions. How better to arrive at understanding the “human element” than to study a culture far different from one’s own. Imagine having the opportunity to creatively design and 3D-print a solar-powered light source, in collaboration with someone on the other side of the globe. Students at Foothills Academy College Preparatory are experiencing just that. The students have been paired one-to-one with students from schools across the globe. Through project based learning, which combines guided discussion, hands-on activities and interactive media, students are identifying an issue and applying design thinking to solve real-world problems. The result is meaningful, global collaboration and an enhanced understanding of the world; genuine global competency. The Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Little Free Library Thursday, November 16, The Little Free Library�project was underwritten by longtime Carefree residents Linda and Mark Putney, on behalf of the Desert Foothills Library (www. desertfoothillslibrary.org), and is a neighborhood book exchange that promotes literacy and the love of reading. The Town of Carefree installed the Little Free Library adjacent to the Gila monster playground for easy access by children and adults. Everyone visiting the Carefree Desert Gardens is encouraged to stop, reach into the little green house, select a favorite book to read or leave a book for someone else to find. Volunteers from the Desert Foothills Library maintain the Little Free Library on a daily basis and add books that are supplied by Chapter2 Bookstore, which is located inside the Desert Foothills Library.

Black Mountain Centers Our Communities Black Mountain is the majestic centerpiece of our Carefree and Cave Creek communities. Our homes and businesses are organized around the multi-colored mountain and it looks down on us as we go about our lives. We can drive, bike, run or walk the nine miles around its base looking at ALLEN NOHRE its blackness from Cave Creek Road Writer on the west and north that turns green with rains in the spring. From Tom Darlington on the east, and Carefree Highway on the south, the giant brown boulders precariously dot the side of the mountain as if placed by a creator playing with stones. Have you ever regarded Black Mountain as sacred? There are mountains that are just mountains and there are mountains that are regarded as special. The highest mountain peak in Greece is Mount Olympus, believed to be the home of the Greek gods and of the Hellenistic world. Mount Sinai, where Moses ascended to receive the Ten Commandments from God, is a sacred mountain. The volcanic Mount Etna in Italy is believed to be the home of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire. When a place in nature is special to us, we often take measures to protect and preserve it. The summit of Black Mountain is a 250-acre preserve transferred in 1973 from the Bureau of Land Management to the Maricopa County Parks Department. The Desert Foothills Land Trust has also

preserved two five-acre parcels near the summit. If you are in great physical shape, you can hike to the peak on a rugged trail that begins at School House Road in Downtown Cave Creek. The trail is not groomed and in some places it is very steep with jagged rocks. I’ve hiked it and enjoyed looking down on our house at the base of the mountain. My preferred way of enjoying Black Mountain is gazing up at him from our patio late in the evening and saluting his majesty with a glass of port. Black Mountain is special – maybe even sacred. Cactus Shadows Announces New Equestrian Club Horsemanship is a hot topic in the Cave Creek Unified School District, and now, Cactus Shadows High School has launched an Equestrian Club to fuel the interest. Tina Steensen-Bech, the club’s sponsor, has many members with varying backgrounds in horsemanship. Activities planned for this year include volunteer work at local stables and rescues, visits to an equine hospital and spectating at WestWorld equestrian events. Guest speakers will include veterinarians and representatives from colleges and universities with equine programs and equestrian teams. Local breeders, horse therapy trainers, polo players and jockeys will also be visiting the club’s membership. Principal Steve Bebee said, “Over the last nine years, I have had many conversations with our students who ride competitively. It is really cool that Cactus Shadows will now have a club that will bond students who love to ride horses together at school.” The Equestrian Club’s mission is to educate members about horse care, health and safety, equestrian education opportunities and careers and current part-time jobs in the community, while having fun discussing equestrian topics and visiting shows together. “Cactus Shadows is an ideal place for an equestrian club. Food Bank Seeks Adopt-A-Family Sponsors For Families
The Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center is seeking donors to brighten the holiday season for children, families and seniors in the northern Arizona foothills community. The food bank is working with more than a dozen local organizations and churches to provide gifts, holiday meals and hope for those in crisis in the community. The 14th annual Adopt-a-Family program will be held Saturday, December 9, in Black Canyon City at High Desert Park, 9am–4pm, and Sunday, December 10, at Holland Community Center, 34250 North 60th Street, Building B, in Scottsdale, 1–3pm. According to Pam DiPietro, executive director of Foothills Food Bank, all families must be signed up by December 1. Individual donors, as well as donor groups such as businesses, HOAs, churches and schools, are encouraged to participate in this year’s Adopt-a-Family program. Interested donors determine the size of the family they are willing to adopt then a family wish list is provided as a shopping guide. Monetary donations also are accepted to support the program. The spirit of giving and community partnership is flourishing at the Desert Foothills Library, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community-funded library, with a new donor rewards program supported by local area business partners. Individual donors who contribute $40, and families $70, or more annually to the Library will receive a rewards card giving the holder a 10 percent discount on goods and services at participating restaurants and other business. Encouraging the reciprocity of giving and receiving, this new program incentivizes purchasing from local merchants who support the library while increasing sales and new customers. Providing a way to thank donors and community partners, the program also helps increase minimum level donations for the Library, which is almost entirely dependent upon contributions. Foothills Christmas Pageant Celebrates The Season
Travel Back In Time (Or Around Cave Creek) On A Stagecoach Dan Harris, owner of D & K Wagon Rides, has come to historic Cave Creek to set the stage for a “trip back in time.” The stagecoach is slung on leather through braces, which creates a sooth motion that needs to be experienced to understand. “If you have never ridden in a stagecoach, there is no other ride like it,” says Harris. His top priority is taking care of the horses, shires Fiona and Frisco and Clydesdales Jack and Ace. But he also built the stagecoach and is a farrier and wheelwright. Harris provides services to the public as well as special events and weddings. Harris has been running his stagecoach in Durango from Memorial Day through October for about five years. Now, Harris and his stagecoach will carry Cave Creek visitors and residents through town this winter and spring. The stagecoach runs Wednesday through Sunday, 1–5pm, from Harold’s Corral to Frontier Town. The cost for adults to ride is $10 one-way; children 6–12, $5 (plus, kids can sit on top of the stagecoach and ride shotgun). Children 5 and under ride for free. A traditional community event started by the Cave Creek 4-H Club in 1952, as a re-enactment of the Christmas story showcasing the 4-H Club members’ animals, will celebrate its 65th annual performance. The Foothills Christmas Pageant takes place at 7pm Saturday, December 2, and Sunday, December 3, at Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area in Cave Creek. Area residents perform in the choir and make up the cast. Volunteers handle all aspects of the pageant, from ground prep, sound tech and sets, to luminaria placement and critter coordination. “We are very proud to keep this tradition going, which is truly a classic,” says Toby Payne, longtime organizer of the Pageant. “You may know the story, but you haven’t experienced it like this. Come, reflect and enjoy. It’s a joy for people of all ages. No one should miss it.” Majestic-voiced narrator Robert Hutson presides over the non-denominational Christmas story with beautiful musical accompaniment provided by the Pageant choir
conducted by Steve Norris. Cactus Shadows Shadowbox Players, directed by Andrew Cupo, enact the roles of Mary, Joseph, Angel, Townspeople and Shepherds. The Three Kings make their dramatic entrance on horseback. Other animals and their owners participate as they wish. Because there is no built-in seating, bring a blanket to sit up-close on the ground or a portable chair. Wear warm clothes and walking shoes. A flashlight is useful because the primary lighting for Spur Cross Ranch is starlight. Admission and parking are free. “There wouldn’t be a Pageant without the volunteer crews who set everything up and help run the event,” said Payne. “We need as many people as possible to participate and keep this 65-year tradition alive.” Anyone interested in volunteering or requiring additional information should contact Payne at 480.544.2290. Magic Bird Festivals expanded its Valley-wide cultural and entertainment events to include Cave Creek Roadhouse Attractions, a new gift and art market series at the Cave Creek Roadhouse, 6900 East Cave Creek Road, in Cave Creek. The outdoor, weekend festivals are centrally located along Cave Creek’s main commercial drive surrounded by a stunning Sonoran Desert landscape. Chicago was introduced to the hot dog in 1893. Today, the famed Vienna Beef hot dog has been rejuvenated and introduced to Cave Creek, and the northern foothill communities that surround it, in the form of Mike’s Chicago Dogs. Mike Harjung says his business specializes in 100 percent Vienna Beef hot dogs. “As a true Chicagoan would say, ‘drag it through the garden,’” says Harjung. “Each dog is nestled in a poppy seed bun and topped with mustard, relish, tomatoes, onion, sport peppers, a dill pickle spear and a dash of celery salt on top for a true Chicago Dog experience.” A native Chicagoan, Harjung moved his family to Cave Creek in 2005. Although Cave Creek is now his home, the business entrepreneur says Chicago remains dear to his heart and is where most of his family lives today. Museum Offers Holiday Fun & More In December Cave Creek Museum kicks off the holiday season with a cowboy-style Christmas. transatlantic voyage, all three traveled through uncharted lands and found themselves beset by raiders, marauding bears, starvation and scurvy. Along the way, the Friars made invaluable notes on indigenous peoples, flora and fauna, and prominent 18th Century figures. Their adventures led them across the highlands of Mexico, the deserts of the American Southwest and coastal California. “These three men opened up a broader swath and a more important swath of the North American continent than Lewis and Clark did,” notes Kittle. The Sonoran Arts League presents its second annual Small Works Fine Art and Holiday Show, featuring works of art by Arizona artists, both regionally and nationally known, December 3–January 7. Small Works is a juried show that includes affordable, exceptional paintings, sculptures and mixed-media pieces in a wide variety of themes. While sizes vary, each artist was asked to create works close to a 12” x 12” (not including frame/mat) configuration. One of the League’s most popular exhibits, this is a favorite of many patrons due to the the smaller scale and affordability of the art. The exhibition officially opens to the general public on December 3 and continues through January 7, 2018. The show will kick off the season with a free Artists’ Reception Gala December 1 at the Sonoran Arts League. During the Gala, attendees will be asked to participate in the “People’s Choice Award” and vote for their favorite piece of artwork in the show. A prize of $500 will be awarded during the gala to the winning artist. Roastery of Cave Creek Celebrates Twenty Years Led by Arizona coffee pioneer David Anderson and his wife Alison, The Roastery of Cave Creek (ROC2), celebrated its 20th anniversary in November, while continuing expansion by increasing roasting capacity by nearly 40 percent. “It’s a milestone to be at 20 years and among the leading Arizona coffee producers,” said Anderson. “We’re honored to be working with some of the best chefs and establishments in the ever-expanding Arizona culinary scene, and we have some exciting plans ahead as we continue to grow.” It started in 1997 with a small 3-kilo roaster in the back of Anderson’s Cave Creek coffee shop. “I had enough mad scientist in me to know I wanted to roast my own beans and control the taste and freshness,” said Anderson. Since then, he has grown a massive wholesale operation featuring more than 20 proprietary blends and single origin coffees. Nitro and Cold Brew were developed in 2015 in partnership with Whole Foods. “We took a year to really dial in the Nitro and Cold Brew programming, but it was worth it, and it’s arguably the best in the Valley – many even say the best they’ve ever tasted,” said Anderson. In addition to Whole Foods, customers range from small cafes to the state’s largest resorts who provide ROC2 coffee to their guests; and ROC2 also serves as a coffee consultation business that not only sells equipment but also helps restaurants and cafes develop their coffee programming, menus, and store design. In November, Anderson continued ROC2’s expansion by increasing its roasting capacity to more than 850,000 pounds per year, a 35–40 percent increase, by adding a new 25-kilo UG Retro 22 roaster. “Presently there are only about

five of these machines in the U.S. and we are thrilled to have one,” said Anderson. ROC2 is served at many of the Valley’s favorite restaurants: Matt’s Big Breakfast, Tarbell’s, Rancho Pinot, FnB, Pizzeria Bianco, Lon’s at the Hermosa and Richardson’s, to name a few – and there are many new ventures are on the horizon. While ROC2 does not have a retail location, the Cave Creek roastery (located at 7003 East Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek) offers fresh roasted beans from “The Box,” a steel cabinet stocked with their coffees available on a grab-n-go basis on the honor system. The box is located just outside the roastery, and there is a mail slot to leave payments with a karma sign above the door. “Locals seem to like it and we have many people who drive from around the Valley and bring out-of-town guests to visit The Box. Every now and then we get I.O.U.’s written on a piece of paper – some are pretty funny – but people always seem to come back and pay. Instead of simply writing a letter, be a living Christmas letter from Christ. Choose three people or families who you know could really use encouragement and make a special pre-Christmas visit to their homes. Think about it. Who do you know that is especially lonely, sorrowful, confined to their home, recuperating from surgery, new to your neighborhood, jobless or any other condition where a visit from your family and you would be a highlight for the whole season? The greatest and most appreciated gift is the investment of your love and time. When God wanted to send the most important message to the world, He didn’t write it in the clouds or send it with a huge bang. God sent a person, a living letter. God sent Jesus to live with us and to love us. May you receive the message that our living God wants to send you this Christmas. You matter very much to God. He loves you and has a plan for your life that is greater than anything you can imagine. Please open this living letter and allow your heart to be changed this Christmas.

Hubbard Sports Camp During Winter Break For families looking to keep children happy, active and “not bored” during the long winter break from school, Hubbard Sports Camp will offer a Winter Sports Camp for children, ages 4 to 13, at Thunderbird Academy in Scottsdale. Children will get to learn and play basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, archery, field sports and a variety of indoor and outdoor games. The camp is offered in full-day and half-day options. Camp dates are December 27–29 and January 2–5. Parents may choose one or more days for their child to attend. There is a full-day option from 8:30am to 3:30pm and a half-day option from 8:30am to noon. The cost is $50, full-day; $35, half-day. Doors open at 8am. Herberger Theater Announces Addition Of Three Resident Companies In mid-November, the Herberger Theater Center (HTC) announced the addition of three resident companies beginning with the 2018–19 season: Arizona Opera, Childsplay Theatre and Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT). They will join current resident companies, Arizona Theatre Company, Center Dance Ensemble and iTheatre Collaborative. These new companies will add to the extraordinary offerings of performing arts, as the Herberger Theater Center fulfills its vision to provide and support significant and relevant experiences and to serve as a premier performance venue, “Where Audience Meets Art.” “We are excited and proud to welcome these wonderful organizations to join the amazing resident companies who call the Herberger Theater Center home,” said Mark Mettes, president and CEO of HTC. “Each of these new companies have a long history of quality productions for audiences throughout the Valley and I can’t wait to see their performances on our stages. Renaissance Festival Celebrates Thirty Years Don’t miss raucous revelry at the 30th Annual Arizona Renaissance Festival opening February 10. Every winter, the Grand Canyon Railway’s Polar Express comes to life on a journey from the nighttime wilderness of Williams to the enchanted beauty of “the North Pole” – where Santa Claus
and his reindeer are waiting with a keepsake present for every good boy and girl. Guests will be smiling from ear to ear, as they watch children’s faces light up when the train arrives, and enjoy hot
chocolate and chocolate chip cookies while listening to this timeless story. Artlink Announces New Third Friday Trolley Tour Artlink announced a new complimentary Third Friday Trolley Tour that will operate in addition to its First Friday Tours. With one additional tour each month, art lovers will find it even easier to access Phoenix’s arts districts and destinations. The free Third Friday trolley will circulate between Roosevelt Row and the Historic Grand Avenue Arts Districts, and the Downtown Phoenix core, with periodic stops along the route. Patrons will be invited to hop-on hop-off where they choose, with an invitation to visit galleries and cultural venues such as Modified Arts, eye lounge, {9} The Gallery, the new Sisao at Oasis on Grand or the Herberger Gallery at Arizona Center. Volunteer docents will staff the trolleys, providing information on the night’s arts and culture offerings. The trolleys will operate between 6pm and 9pm each third Friday (effective November 17). All many of us really want for the holiday gifting season is less aggravation. Here are a few empirical guidelines for you
How do you prefer to live? Do you take the time to treat yourself well at home? Do you do things in your home that make you happy and feel good? Last week, I had a conversation with a client about bringing rituals and ceremony into her home. She had read one of my articles and wanted to bring her “signature” into her environment. To do this she knew she had to better understand herself so that she could customize her personal space. As we talked about doing this she realized that it was about her preferences. It was about her habits and things she likes that gave her comfort and bonded her with her surroundings. Of course, her favorite things are very different from yours and mine.
