College bids farewell to Dean K K Wei The College bids a fond farewell to outgoing Dean K K Wei. Prof Wei has presided over a period of unprecedented expansion at CB. During his term of office CB has (amongst other things) introduced the 4-year BBA, established the College International Advisory Board, opened CB’s Centre for Advanced Business Research and Executive Education in Shenzhen, and inaugurated the College Excellence Awards schemes for Teaching and Research. Internationally CB has developed close collaborations with renowned universities including UC Berkeley and University of Toronto, and established joint programmes with overseas universities. Beyond the classroom, about 70% of our BBA students experience exchange and internship programmes. And of course as far as research is concerned Prof Wei leaves CB ranked 69th
DBA Briefcase As part of a newly developed learning strategy, each member of the 2012 DBA cohort is to be given an iPad. The new technology will support the so-called “DBA Briefcase”, an initiative designed to foster research collaboration and communication in the DBA community. All information in Briefcase is synchronized automatically every time participants log on, greatly enhancing communication. We envisage that DBA Briefcase will create a strong network effect - with further cohorts set to join Briefcase in the future.

Summer Programmes – Service Learning at SHAWCO, South Africa One of CB’s primary educational roles is to create learning opportunities that expose our students to the concept of global social responsibility. This summer 18 BBA students participated in a 6-week Social Entrepreneurship Programme in Cape Town, South Africa. The programme was organised in conjunction with the Students’ Health and Welfare Centres Organization (SHAWCO), at the University of Cape Town. The programme consisted of classes, internships and cultural visits, sensitizing our students to the potential of social entrepreneurship, and enabling them to gain practical experience beyond the classroom.
CB welcomes Prof Sia Choon Ling, our new Associate Dean (Research & Postgraduate), and Mr Alex Koy Siong Tham, as Assistant Dean (Admissions and Promotion for Undergraduate), to the College Management Team. The Assistant Deanship is a newly created management position, reflecting the importance of the new undergraduate admissions process as we consolidate our 4-year degree programme. CB would also like to record a big thank you to Prof Kelvin Yau, the outgoing Associate Dean (Research & Postgraduate), for his tremendous contribution during his term of office.
Centre for Social Media Marketing and Business Intelligence (CSMR) The College of Business continues to actively promote cutting-edge research with the establishment of the Centre for Social Media Marketing and Business Intelligence (CSMR). The Centre is headed by Director Prof Sia Choon Ling, Associate Dean for Research & Postgraduate, and aims to provide a platform for conducting high impact interdisciplinary research work. CSMR has fundamentally changed the ways consumers communicate, consume, and co-create with other consumers and firms. There is increasing demand for research to understand how firms can harness the power of social media in marketing, idea crowdsourcing, and knowledge management. The Centre is the first fruit of collaboration with the Alibaba group, Taobao University. Through such industrial collaborations, it is anticipated that new applied research dimensions can be created in areas such as streamlined e-business systems, efficient marketing and sales strategies, and more cohesive customer segmentation models. This research will be readily applicable and of direct benefit to the e-commerce industry.
