Mr. Wong Hong Yi was invited to this series of SPECIAL Hall Night Talk to share his experience within his education journey from high school years up to his PhD years. He is a graduate of the City University of Hong Kong with a BEng in Architectural Engineering department and a former residence in the CityU residence hall. With a high level of relatability in his background with the audience, he then shared the details of his journey with the listener.

He explained that he liked to do non-academical activities in his high school year like music and sports which are something he does as a hobby. Getting into university was challenging because he was a generalist. It took time for him to find the right major to pursue. He ended up studying hard and managed to get into the Associate for Architectural Engineering. He aimed to enter the bachelor program but halted due to failing one of the required subjects. He had to retake the course for the next year but had a whole next semester empty. He decided to do some charity work and went to Africa with the help of a charity organization. When he was there, he did a lot of meaningful activities like interacting with and educating the people and children there, doing some high-level hiking, etc.

After graduating from City University in Hong Kong,

Mr. Hong Yi then proceeds to take a master's degree in Fire Safety Engineering where he then explains the differences between the two types of master's degrees. Taught master's is a degree where you receive the material as a basis for your future career path but a Research master's can branch to a PhD program by doing tons of research on the field. In these years, he managed to set up a start-up company with his colleagues called GABES that focuses on creating safetyrelated gadgetry and types of equipment to help people in emergencies.

In his university days, he did a lot of activities to fill in his daily life ranging from participating in several university competitions, hall activities, and some sports activities. He did those because he enjoyed those types of activities and urged the audience to also find what they like and do the activities based on that interest. He also made many friends along the way and it help fulfill his fruitful university life.
