We are delighted to invite you to the 2017 Banking, Finance and Consultancy Fair. This event is an ideal opportunity for you to network with key recruiters from these sectors and gather information that will help you stand out from other applicants. Please use the checklist below that the Careers Service has prepared for you in order to help you make the most of this event and get ahead of the competition.

Before the Fair • Registered for and attended the fair preparation session or completed the Banking, Finance and Consultancy Fair Prep Quiz to learn how to make the most of the Fair and get a fast-track entry pass? •P re-registered online via careershub.city.ac.uk/students? • Done some research on the exhibitors that you want to approach on the day? Start with reading the profiles of the exhibitors in this guide. • Researched how employers prefer to be approached at Careers Fairs? • Prepared some relevant questions that demonstrate your interest in that area of work? • Prepared a couple of sentences to introduce yourself clearly and succinctly to organisations? See page 15 of this guide for further information on how to secure a fast-track entry pass. 2|3

On the day • Approach the stand as you would do at an interview – first impressions count! • Start conversations with expressions such as “I am interested in...” or “I know about your company and would like to find out more about...” • Be prepared to outline succinctly your knowledge of the company, express enthusiasm in what the company does and describe how your background could contribute to their needs • F ind out what exhibitors are looking for by asking them what skills and experience they require. You can then tailor your experiences and responses to what they are looking for • Have a notepad ready so you can note down the name of anyone who you really enjoyed talking to. If they inspired you to work for their organisation, mention this in your application form • Be proactive and keen: talk to the recruiters •P lan what you are going to wear to project a professional image on the day of the Fair. Present yourself as you would at an interview.

• Stand in a huddle in the corner talking to your friends • Monopolise a single person • Just browse or collect freebies • Dress too casually (jeans, trainers and baseball caps are not recommended).

Prepare to answer questions “Tell me about your course and why you decided to study it.” “What interests you about banking/finance/consultancy?” “Tell me a little bit about yourself.” Are you ready to sell yourself positively and succinctly in response to general openers like these? Start with your name, course and year of study. You may then want to say a few words about your career aspirations, areas of interest, why you are attending the Fair and why you have approached the employer in front of you. Write your notes on the following lines:

Prepare to ask questions Have a look through the pages that follow and identify employers that you would like to approach at the Fair. Think about questions that you would like to ask each of them and write them down in the notes sections under exhibitors’ profiles in this guide, ready for the day of the Fair. For example, prepare questions that will help you decide if a particular career or a particular organisation may be the one for you. You may wish to find out more about opportunities for professional qualifications, long-term careers prospects, work-life balance, job security, work environment, training and development opportunities, content of work, opportunities to work internationally and job availability. You may also wish to ask questions about recent news stories or big issues facing a particular organisation or industry. Ensure you do not ask questions which can be easily answered by doing some very basic research.

By the end of the session you will be able to analyse situations from a business perspective and recognise what makes an organisation successful.

Overcoming the fear of networking events “ Preparation is key. Networking events can be a nerve-racking experience and having an idea of the questions you would like to ask will calm you and ensure you take something useful away from the experience. Remember to take notes too so you do not forget the answers to all those insightful questions you asked. Above all, be yourself and make some genuine connections.” Inside Careers “ Practice a few introductory lines at home before you attend the networking event. What are you interested in, what is your favourite module, how are you going to separate yourself from other candidates. Think about how you are going to introduce yourself to the employers and go for it.” EY “ Networking can help you build better connections with other professionals and help you expand your knowledge. Our top tip is do not be afraid to join in. Events are an excellent place to meet new people and build connections, so do not be afraid to initiate a conversation or introduce yourself during a break in an existing conversation.” ICAEW “ Just do it. Understand that all your peers are in the same boat, and that prospective employers were once in your shoes. No one is there to humiliate, belittle, or scream at you. Understand that networking is a knowledge sharing exercise, so come prepared with your elevator pitch and a list of questions for prospective employers.” Capco “ It starts with a simple Hello. How are you? and can lead to a very interesting conversation. Remember that everyone finds networking events difficult at times but people do like to talk about themselves so having a few typical questions up your sleeve should help lead to a nice conversation.” Bank of England “ There is never a stupid question, we have all been in your shoes so just ask and build a rapport with people on the stand. This will build your confidence as the event continues. Good luck.” CIPFA

Start thinking about your career now In a competitive employment market it is essential to engage with employers early to stand out from your peers, gain experience and make an informed decision about your future. First year students! It’s never too early to start thinking about your career – read on to find out why it is important to engage early.

“ Insights and internships are not only a great way to develop skills and demonstrate a real interest in the profession but candidates that perform well are often fast-tracked through the company’s graduate recruitment process. Engaging with employers early could allow you to enter your final year of university with the security of knowing you’ll have a job at the end of it.” Inside Careers “ First-year students should engage with employers early on as time at university flies by so quickly and it is so much easier to work out exactly what you want to do, where you would like to work and who you would like to work for when you talk to various people in different companies and professions. Careers Fairs are a great place to do this.” HW Fisher & Company “ Engaging early offers a number of benefits. You identify what opportunities are available to you, some you may not have considered, you learn more about what employers want from you, allowing you to develop key employability skills and enhance your commercial awareness, and you also start to develop a professional network to support you future development and open the door to possible career opportunities.” CIMA “ The graduate recruitment market is increasingly competitive. By applying for first-year internships you will open yourself to valuable work experience and opportunities to build skills and knowledge to make yourself stand out from the crowd when graduation comes around.” Bank of England “ Many employers including Capco have many more opportunities than just typical graduate schemes. This includes internships, insight weeks and company-based projects, available to all-level students. They give both parties a chance to learn more about the other. Students can gauge the culture, work environment, the people, all while increasing their chances of obtaining full-time employment upon graduation.” Capco “ Research shows that students are increasingly starting to search for a graduate job in their first year of study. Engaging with employers early on will help give insight into the behaviours and skills employers are looking for in student applications and CVs, as well as provide opportunities to secure work experience, summer internships and placement opportunities.” ICAEW
