The 2021 Engineering and Technology Virtual Fair is an ideal opportunity for you to network with key employers from these sectors and gather information to help you stand out from other applicants. Before the Fair

HAVE YOU... Registered to attend the Fair preparation session on Monday 1st November, 13:00 – 14:00 at https://buff.ly/3jWrasi? Pre-registered to attend the Fair online at https://buff.ly/3xF0GiY? Researched the exhibitors that you want to approach on the day? Start by reading through the exhibitor profiles in this guide, then conduct further research into the ones that stand out to you the most. Prepared some questions to ask employers you meet? Use the space under the exhibitors to note down your employer specific questions. Prepared a couple of sentences to introduce yourself clearly and succinctly to organisations? Checked out https://buff.ly/3xF0GiY for the most up-to-date list of exhibitors you can expect to meet on the day? There will be more than listed in this guide. Made an appointment with a careers consultant before the Fair to get advice on how to approach employers?

TOP TIPS Asking killer questions Ensure to turn up prepared with questions that will help you decide if a particular organisation is the one for you. These might be about work culture, long-term career prospects, opportunities to work internationally and opportunities for professional qualifications. You may also wish to ask questions about recent news stories or big issues facing a particular organisation or industry. Avoid asking questions which are easily answered with basic research.

Get ahead of the game For top tips, etiquette and best practice when preparing for a Careers Fair, read the resource document created by our careers consultant team at: careershub.city.ac.uk/docs/37/Making-the-Most-of-CareersEvents.pdf

Making the most of the Careers Clinics The Fairs will take place on Symplicity. During the Fair employers will be hosting presentations about their organisations as well as one-to-one chats with students. Find out more about how to use the Symplicity Fair system and and see the schedule of the group presentations at: https://buff.ly/3xF0GiY

Getting off to a great start Remember that employers are there to meet you too. Expect to be asked questions such as ‘tell me about your course and why you decided to study it’ and ‘what interests you about our organisation or field?’ Introduce yourself with your name, course and year of study. You may want to say a few words about your career aspirations, areas of interest and why you have approached the employer in front of you.

Accessibility The City Careers Fairs will take place virtually via Symplicity and Microsoft Teams. For accessibility information and support, visit the links below. Symplicity: www.symplicity.com/accessibility Microsoft Teams: https://bit.ly/MSTeams-accessibility Jot down some notes in the space below.

On the day

DO

Approach the employer as you would do for an interview – first impressions count Start conversations with expressions such as “I am interested in...” or “I know about your company and would like to find out more about...” Be proactive, keen and upload an up-to-date copy of your CV to the Symplicity platform ahead of the event Briefly outline your knowledge of the company and express enthusiasm in what the company does Ask employers what skills and experience they require so you can tailor your responses to what they are looking for Use the space in the guide to note down the name of anyone you enjoyed talking to. If they inspired you to work for their organisation, mention this in your application form Dress to project a professional image – present yourself as you would at an interview Follow standard virtual etiquette, keep your microphone on mute unless speaking and make others in your household aware that you will be in a video meeting.

DON'T

Monopolise a single person during presentation Q&As Ask questions that a quick search of the employer’s website could answer for you Dress too casually (jeans, trainers and baseball caps are not recommended).

What would your ideal candidate look like?

“We are looking for individuals who share our passion for technology. We seek out graduates who are able to come up with creative solutions to problems, think ahead and are keen to tackle a multitude of challenges. Our ideal candidate will have a degree in IT, computer science or a technology-related subject, although we also offer some non-technical roles.” Tata Consultancy Services

“We are not just looking for candidates with technical backgrounds or courses. We have a lot of opportunities for students from any educational background. We value behavior and soft skills as much as we value technical skills. We look at the candidates’ ability to adapt to the IBM culture and work environment.” IBM

“No matter who you are, there’s a place here for you at Arm. We welcome all kinds of brilliant. You can play your part in building a happier, healthier world in a job where you’re making a difference from the get-go. You could be building the code in 70 per cent of technology used by the world’s population. We will give you the confidence to carve out your own career.” Arm

“At Amazon we’re obsessed with innovating for our customers and keeping a day one mindset. Employees who do well here tend to have what we call ‘relentless curiosity’. We take into account educational background and work experience, but we focus on assessing against our leadership principles. We touch so many different industries that there’s no one set of ‘hard’ skills that a candidate needs.” Amazon

“Our ideal candidate would be able to demonstrate the following strengths which we assess throughout an application: driven performer, curious learner, logical resolver, opportunity seeker, resilient achiever, adaptable delivery and relationship builder. We use strength-based questioning and are looking for students to be able to evidence these through examples.” FDM Group
