Welcome Thank you for your interest in the School of Health Sciences
At City’s School of Health Sciences we are proud of our heritage and have a history dating back more than 120 years, to the School of St Bartholomew’s Hospital and The Royal London Hospital.
We employ leading academics and researchers from disciplines including nursing, midwifery, optometry, radiography, psychology, sociology, health policy, speech and language therapy and human communication. Our academics are not only some of the foremost experts in their respective fields, but are also responsible for key research projects that impact on how healthcare is practised in the UK. Working across all these disciplines we are committed to a modern and interdisciplinary approach to healthcare. This perspective is becoming increasingly important with an ageing society and the increasing number of people with chronic conditions the bulk of whom are managed in the community.
The School provides outstanding health education in the heart of London and continually evolves to increase academic activity, enhance student experience, and ensure that we are at the forefront of health-related academic research that has a positive and enduring impact on patient outcomes.
Our exceptional students are at the heart of our School. We know our students are unique – they are committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based and empathetic healthcare to patients and their families and are the health leaders of tomorrow.
We offer a range of courses at foundation, undergraduate, post-registration and postgraduate level. The School also offers an extensive range of modules and short courses as part of our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) portfolio.
We build lifelong relationships with our students as they learn and take that knowledge into the workplace throughout their careers – as independent and confident practitioners, managers and leaders.
To this end we are committed to improving our students’ experience. We have invested over £14 million on new facilities at the main university campus with a new School of Health Sciences building nearby. The new facilities include a new biological sciences laboratory and Clinical Skills facility which simulate fully equipped hospital wards. City University London offers opportunities for everyone interested in pursuing a career in health and provides exceptional graduate employment prospects as a result of our commitment to academic excellence, focus on business and the professions and the benefits of our central London location. We look forward to welcoming you as a student in the near future.

Your Career “City University London has links with some of the world’s most prestigious hospitals.”
With you every step of the way…
Gayle Inman BSc (Hons) Radiography (Diagnostic Imaging) “ The course at City has prepared me really well and I have learnt so much. At times I was very nervous as naturally you do get days when you think I can’t do this – it can be hard and stressful – but then you have great days and your confidence goes up. It’s a bit like when you first start driving and you are very focused on developing your technical skills and confidence. At the beginning you are consumed by the technical aspects – but then as you get more accomplished you can talk and do x-rays - you start to juggle the two. You get lots of support from your personal tutor and the link lecturers. My personal tutor came and visited me every week and I felt I was really looked after and supported. By the end of the first year I felt I was part of the team. I was trusted to get on with my job and undertake x-rays. The placements allow you to build on your theoretical learning, you get to observe the radiography department in action then actually have a go yourself. I found as I got to know the departments, the equipment and team members, my confidence really started to grow. As a student studying and practising in London you have access to the most up-todate expertise and facilities. City University London also has links with some of the world’s most prestigious hospitals. Increasingly, getting a job is more competitive and you really need to raise your game to get a job and succeed. Living, studying and ultimately working in London gives you so many more work and social opportunities.” 8
We are dedicated to supporting you in achieving your career goals. Whatever field you want to work in and whatever stage you are at, we have the support and the links to meet your needs at every step of your career.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY
“Having been a practitioner for 25 years, doing the MSc in Joint Professional Practice (Language and Communication) has completely opened up my world. I would recommend to anybody who’s thinking about it, to jump in with both feet and do it… I am now more questioning about my practice, more confident in finding justification for what I do, and am more rigorous about measuring, collating, and evaluating outcomes. When I started the course, I thought it was all planned out, and I would be just the same but with a degree. In fact it’s setting off on a journey but without knowing what the end point is. And the journey’s still going!” Speech and Language Therapist, Lincolnshire NHS Community Health Services
“The lecturers were experts in their own fields, stimulating debate, critical thinking and objective reasoning. This course has proved to be both a challenge and a delight and I would thoroughly recommend it.” Interim Manager Clinical Services, Royal Free Hospital
“I have modified my approach to management, becoming much more aware of the diverse interests of stakeholders in the public sector. Students are exposed to the latest theories in their chosen areas of study, but more importantly, they emerge knowing how to use these data to improve the use of NHS resources and outcomes for patients.” Non-executive Director, Suffolk Mental Health Partnership

MPHIL/PHD BY PROSPECTIVE PUBLICATION
STRUCTURED MPHIL/PHD
This route enables students to incorporate publication arising out of their study as they undertake their MPhil/ PhD studies. Normally six to ten publications form the basis of the thesis.
We offer the opportunity to undertake research degrees in a number of different ways. Doctoral studies normally take three years full-time and five years part-time to complete.
STRUCTURED MPHIL/PHD
–– Doctor of Health (Health) –– Doctor of Health (Nursing) –– Doctor of Health (Optometry) –– Doctor of Health (Radiography) –– Doctor of Health (Speech and Language Therapy)
MPHIL/PHD
Most students choose to undertake their studies in this conventional format. The traditional MPhil/PhD involves writing a thesis based on the candidate’s research; making an original contribution to their field of learning. The process of developing a substantial argument, usually written in the format of a thesis of between 50,000 to 100,000 words is the traditional route to a career in research and academia.
An increasing number of students in the School are electing to undertake research studies by this route. This route involves the construction of a literature review within the field of research interest, the undertaking of a case study prior to commencing their main research project and submitting a thesis that comprises the literature review (approximately 10,000 words), case study (approximately 10,000 words) and main research project (approximately 50,000 to 70,000 words).
MPHIL/PHD BY PRIOR PUBLICATION
This route is intended for people who have already published a number of significant research papers that collectively can be considered to constitute a thesis at doctoral level. Students who register on this route are required to spend one to two years composing a document of around 20,000 words articulating the construction of their research that can be identified within their published work.
