Accessing the brightest minds at City The PLU has been placing City students with a range of employers for over 20 years. We provide a bespoke, wide-ranging service to businesses seeking to offer short to long-term work experience to students with the potential to become leaders in their field. There are numerous benefits for employers: • Our students will bring high-level technical skills, knowledge, enthusiasm, objectivity and new ideas to your organisation. • Placement students and interns offer a valuable resource for a fraction of the cost of a graduate. • We provide comprehensive guidelines and support throughout the placement process, from conception to completion. • Placements are fixed term and there is no requirement for you to offer work extending past this period. • Hiring a student will allow you to build stronger, mutually beneficial links with academia and the world-class research at City, University of London.

A flexible approach
We offer several pathways through which a student can undertake some form of workbased learning: • All undergraduates are encouraged to complete a one-year sandwich placement or summer internship as part of their course. • Our Professional Pathway Scheme allows undergraduate students from the Department of Computer Science to work for up to four days a week whilst completing their degree. • Postgraduate students from the Department of Computer Science are encouraged to complete an integrated internship as part of their Masters which is linked to their thesis. We are always keen to hear from employers interested in discussing alternative pathways for students to undertake professional experience, including opportunities for project work.
How the PLU supports placements
We support students and employers throughout each placement to make sure both parties benefit from the experience. Each placement student is assigned a Workbased Learning Advisor or Visiting Tutor who will provide assistance for the duration of the placement, visiting the workplace and liasing with both student and provider.
Having selected placements that meet their interests and career goals, many of our students are happy to report back on their experiences. This is Ibrahim’s story.
Advertising your opportunities
The PLU has a very strong relationship with students currently studying at City and there are a number of ways in which we can publicise your vacancies and ensure that you receive the best quality applications. Please contact us to discuss advertising your opportunities to our students.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering student Ibrahim Habib spent his placement year with BMW. During my placement year at BMW, I worked in the Assembly Process Planning department. I joined the company at a very exciting time, as my mentor was leading the integration of the highly anticipated electric MINI. There would be many challenges ahead because it was the first time a fully electric car was being integrated into an internal combustion engine vehicle assembly line across the whole BMW group. I was in a unique position to gain a great understanding of how real engineering problems are solved in a high-pressure environment. I have been recommended for the BMW graduate scheme and also told that I would be very welcome to return to the department as a full-time engineer.
