Remembering City Leaving a gift to the University in your Will

www.city.ac.uk

Since my arrival at City in 2010 I have been impressed by the affection so many former students, staff and friends have for their University. Through the years, City has been at the forefront of education and research. Our alumni network of over 130,000 former students is testament to the difference the University has made to so many lives over so many years. Our alumni have gone on to become leaders in virtually every conceivable field and our Schools have produced world-leading and life-changing research. But against this backdrop, the scenery of higher education is changing rapidly. In increasingly challenging economic times and with much-reduced government funding, we strive to attract the most able undergraduate and postgraduate students regardless of their backgrounds and provide them with outstanding facilities. We are extremely grateful to those friends and alumni who help support this endeavour financially or intend to do so by leaving a legacy. This is one of the ways of helping the University continue on its path to being a leading global University, positioned among the top 2% of universities in the world and committed to making a real difference to the lives of future students. Should you decide to leave a legacy to the University we are keen to work with you and ensure your wishes are met. This booklet provides more information about how to proceed. We are extremely grateful if you have already decided to remember City in your Will. I hope I will have the opportunity to meet you at future University events so that I may thank you personally. Helping the University plan for the future is a wonderful way of providing a lasting gift as City grows in academic stature while nurturing that affection that is precious to us all. Your support is most appreciated.

Join us in shaping City’s future City University London is an institution rich in heritage and tradition. The University was founded in 1894 as the Northampton Institute on land now part of our main campus, bequeathed by the Marquess of Northampton and the Earl of Compton. Generous benefactors also included The Worshipful Company of Skinners and The Worshipful Company of Saddlers. The Institute was granted University status by Royal Charter in 1966.

Today, City is a leading international University and the only University in London committed to academic excellence and focused on business and the professions. We have more than 17,000 students from over 150 countries and staff from over 50 countries. We are among the top 10 in the UK for both graduate employment and starting salaries and home to the Sir John Cass Business School. We are extremely proud of our history and achievements. Many of our students go on to have successful and fulfilling careers. As the University moves towards its 120th anniversary we invite you to join others who have made a difference by leaving a legacy to City University London.

For over 100 years, we have been using education, research and enterprise to transform the lives of our students, our community and the world.

Why leave a legacy to City? Leaving a gift to City in your Will is a wonderful way to make a long-lasting impact on the University, future generations of students and leave an enduring impression in years to come. You can be very specific about how you would like your legacy to help City. For instance, you may decide to support your old department or School, or talented students who are financially challenged. You could provide funding towards a particular area of academic, scientific or medical research, you could support our internationally renowned Olive Tree Programme or help develop our campus and infrastructure. Alternatively, a legacy can be made for the general benefit of the University. Such a gift is particularly valuable as it allows us to respond flexibly and to allocate funds where they are most needed at the time they are received. The choice is yours.

We are in the top 10 in the UK for both graduate-level jobs (The Sunday Times University Guide 2013) and for starting salaries (Which? University).

Leaving a legacy to the University can provide considerable tax benefits for both the donor and the University. City is an exempt charitable body and is registered as such with HM Revenue and Customs (Reference No. X 1134). Due to its tax exempt status City pays no tax on gifts of money or property made during your lifetime or on your death. Additionally, gifts made in your Will are free from Inheritance Tax which may otherwise be charged to your estate.

Where your legacy can make an impact

Supporting our students The University is passionate about providing increased support for our current and future students. Through named scholarships and bursaries, City is keen to recognise and reward those undergraduate and postgraduate students who excel academically and to attract the most able regardless of financial background. A scholarship really can help change someone’s life.

“ Studying can be a solitary experience, you are only responsible to yourself for getting the best degree you can. So when you receive a scholarship, you suddenly realise that there are a group of people who want to invest in you and in your education and that is quite a special thing. In accepting my certificate, I felt that I owed it to this group of people to work to the absolute best of my ability and this really made me want to raise my game as a student.” Developing outstanding research We aim to produce research recognised throughout the world for its relevance and influence on future generations. Increasing the proportion of research-excellent academic staff is also crucial to the quality of our degree programmes and enriching the learning experience of our students. A legacy gift designated to support our research will enable us to continue our quest to find solutions to some the world’s most pressing problems.

The Olive Tree Programme The Olive Tree Programme is a unique initiative for young people from Palestine and Israel, whose lives have been framed by conflict and whose talents and leadership potential single them out as candidates for an exacting three years of study, reflection, exploration and debate in London. The Programme offers the participants undergraduate scholarships to study at City and involvement in a challenging parallel programme of extra-curricular activities which helps them engage in cross-cultural dialogue. In this way the Olive Tree Programme aims to be more than a scholarship programme. A legacy gift to this Programme will help us to continue to develop outstanding global citizens who may one day help to influence one of the world’s most troubled areas.

Noam Rabinovich, Olive Tree Alumna 2008–2011

“ ...For three years, on a weekly basis, the Olive Tree Programme challenged me and encouraged me to think, ask, listen, doubt and articulate. If higher education is about learning to think analytically and critically, about opening oneself to various and foreign ideas and perspectives, about questioning long-held wisdom and beliefs, about finding one’s place and value in the world, then the Olive Tree Programme is the ultimate educational experience.”

Developing our campus and infrastructure World class facilities are a prerequisite for a world class student experience. The University has launched a significant capital programme with new buildings and state-of-the-art facilities planned for our students. It is essential that the services and facilities that support our students and academic staff in their endeavours are of a quality that matches our academic ambitions. There is a continuing need to develop our historic campus and the gift of a legacy will enable this transformation to continue long into the future.

How to leave a legacy You can help City University London by remembering us in your Will. Whatever size of gift you choose to make, it will be received gratefully and used effectively to enhance the future of the University. Leaving a legacy to City University London in your Will is one of the most simple and flexible ways of giving. We strongly advise that you seek professional legal advice when making or changing your Will. We will be happy to discuss with you (or your solicitor) the appropriate wording for leaving a gift, or provide you with a Codicil form to amend an existing Will.

Choosing the right legacy for you There are five different types of legacy with which you can support City University London. Reversionary legacy This gift has the advantage of providing for your family first and then benefiting the University. It involves leaving your assets to trustees so that the beneficiaries can enjoy the benefits during their lifetime, with the whole or a portion reverting to the University on their death. Residuary legacy A gift which comprises all or part of the net remainder of your estate once all other legacies, debts and fees have been met. This is a particularly simple gift as you neither have to quantify the sum nor worry about inflation when writing your Will.

Conditional legacy This provides for the possibility that if one of your named beneficiaries does not survive you, that part of your estate will be left to the University. Specific or non-money legacy If you choose to, you may donate particular items such as property, stocks and shares, works of art or books. Please consult the University in advance. Pecuniary legacy This type of gift should be selected if you would like to leave a specified sum of money to the University.

We are proud of our education and research pedigree that spans more than a century. During that time, we have made notable contributions through basic and applied research to a wide range of social, economic, cultural and professional fields.
