City is among the UK’s top 30 universities according to the Times Higher Education Table of Tables 2012 and in the top 5% in the world according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011/12. Moreover, The Sunday Times rankings place City in the top twelve for graduate starting salaries. We have a rich Victorian heritage with close links to the City of London and a Vision to be in the top 2% of universities in the world by 2016 when we will celebrate our 50th birthday.
Fifteen of our academic subject areas produce research that ranks with the best in the world according to the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 and the people in these subject areas will be educating you. This is an important point because you will be learning with academics who are themselves learning as they develop their subjects. You will learn most effectively when you take responsibility for your learning and you will find you will learn as much informally from your colleagues and students on other programmes as you will in lectures, laboratories and the library. Your subject is important but remember that there is more to university than academic study. Take advantage of the extra-curricular opportunities on offer through the Students’ Union, its clubs and societies and in London generally. From volunteering and community liaison to sport, music and drama, the possibilities are boundless. I’m very pleased that you have joined us. We may not meet until I shake your hand at your graduation but in the meantime I hope that you enjoy your induction to City University London.

I have nowhere to live: what should I do? The University Halls are currently full but vacancies do occur throughout the year and you can apply for housing online at www.city.ac.uk/ accommodation. We will look at the date of application, the distance you live from the University and whether you have a serious medical condition or disability. If Halls are not for you, we have information on our website about looking for private housing, and a link to StudentPad which is a database of private landlords and has a message board on which you can leave your details and meet other students looking to share accommodation.
When will I receive my student finance? After registration City will confirm your enrolment to the Student Loan Company (SLC) who will then pay your student finance (e.g. maintenance loan) within three to five working days directly into the bank account you have confirmed to the SLC.
I’m not happy in my room in Halls of Residence: is there anything I can do? If it’s a question of maintenance or noise then tell the reception at the Hall, who will deal with the problem. If you wish to move rooms then discuss this with the Hall staff (please note that this will depend on room availability at the Hall). For those wishing to move out of Halls, please complete a leaver’s form from the Student Centre and we’ll try and fill your room as soon as possible. You are financially liable for your room until a replacement is found. The contact details for the Accommodation team are as follows: E: accomm@city.ac.uk T: +44 (0)20 7040 7040
My student finance has not yet been confirmed: what help can I get from City? City will be able to provide a limited short-term loan if there is a significant delay in receiving your student finance: we will require confirmation of your application for student finance. For further help please attend a Financial Support drop-in session on Mondays and Thursdays between 14:00 and 15:30. Alternatively, you can book an appointment on Tuesdays or Fridays between 10:00 and 12:00. To find out more, contact the Finance team: E: fundsservice@city.ac.uk T: +44 (0)20 7040 7040

International students What’s on for international students in Welcome Week? On 25th September, the Students’ Union and the International Student Advice team will host Global City Day, an opportunity for all students, but especially international students, to meet their peers from around the world. There will be a range of information stalls run by external organisations and University departments, offering products and services to help you make the most of your time at City. Global City Day will take place between 10:00 and 16:00 in the marquees behind the Students’ Union in Northampton Square. I have a question about my UK visa or my passport. Can I get some advice? City has a team of International Student Advisers who can assist students with UK visa and passport issues. To speak to an adviser face-to-face, please attend an International Student Advice drop-in session on Tuesday afternoons (14:30–16:30) or Thursday mornings (10:30–12:30). Students may also book individual 45-minute appointments which are available on Wednesday mornings and Friday afternoons. E: visaadvice@city.ac.uk T: +44 (0)20 7040 8831/8826/3262. My visa says I need to register with the Police. What should I do? It is important that you register with the Police as soon as you can. Information about how to do this can be obtained from the Student Centre or accessed on the student intranet. W: https://intranet.city.ac.uk/students/ international/visas/police-registration. html

What is the Students’ Union? The City University London Student’s Union (CULSU) is here to help students have a great time at University. All students are automatically part of CULSU once enrolled. We ensure that the student voice is heard by the University by lobbying on your behalf, running campaigns and consulting students on specific issues.
We also help clubs, sports and societies flourish as well as organising events in Saddlers Bar. Our Union is led by three students who take a sabbatical year to represent students at a senior level within the University. All Schools also have their own School Representation Officer, as well as individual course representatives who work hard to collect your views and make sure they are fed back to the respective School. There will be elections in October to recruit new student representatives so keep your eyes peeled for opportunities to get involved!
What is the Union Support Service (USS)? The Union Support Service is an advocacy project run by a team of trained student advisors. This peer-to-peer service provides free, professional and confidential support to City students dealing with academic problems, including submitting forms for appeals and extenuating circumstances and accusations of academic misconduct. The USS is independent from the University. E: uss@city.ac.uk What does the Union organise? The Union organises weekly events such as ‘I Love...’ on Wednesday evenings, ‘Alternate’ on Fridays and fortnightly ‘Open Mic’ sessions in Saddlers Bar. We also arrange bigger events such as end-of-term parties, the Graduation Ball and the social side of the annual Varsity sporting event. Check our website regularly for more details.
