Based on the character-based comedy show which he took to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2012 You’re Probably Wondering Why I’ve Asked You Here... is a three-part performance unlike anything you have seen before. Phill Jupitus plays the part of three extraordinary characters and with the help of an inquisitive audience, we find out more about them. The Late Vernon Herschel Harley is a legend of stage and screen who died at the age of 114 just last Thursday. He has worked with everybody in theatre and cinema and describes himself as ‘quite lively for a dead chap’ and ‘an anecdote Gatling gun.’ The Late Kurt Schiffer was the Korvettenkapitan of the U42B out of Hamburg part of the German Navy’s Wolf Packs, which were the scourge of the Atlantic shipping lanes. He died in 1944. The Late Phill Jupitus died on June 24th 2052 on the eve of his 90th birthday. Leave your preconceptions at the door but don’t forget to bring your curiosity.

A hilarious romp through the troubled innercity Manchester childhood of one of Britain’s most notorious and outspoken TV presenters… Terry bares all in his debut stand-up show, lifting the lid on his Catholic upbringing, ‘Madchester,’ The Word and Celebrity Big Brother in the process – definitely not for the fainthearted! When gang warfare in Moss Side is the least of your worries compared to sadistic nuns and paedophile priests and your best mate is the school bully who just wants to kick your head in, is it any wonder he turned out a #@&%?! terrychristian.tv

RALPH McTELL

ONE MORE FOR THE ROAD STARRING

JOE PASQUALE MARY COUGHLAN Mary’s smoky, bluesy, boozy drawl has always been a seduction, this is why she is so loved. Throughout her quite extraordinary recording career spanning more than a quarter of a century, Mary has drawn heavily from vocal stylings of her legendary heroes; Billie Holliday, Peggy Lee, Van Morrison and Edith Piaf – all are present and correct in her delivery. Even so, Mary, with her naked honesty makes every song her own and audiences cannot fail to be moved by her passionate live performances. marycoughlanmusic.com

DEAN FRIEDMAN This legendary, singer-songwriter, known for chart-topping hits Ariel, Lucky Stars, Lydia and Woman Of Mine – performs songs from throughout his three-decade career. Join Friedman for an evening of powerful, poignant, hilarious songs about the ordinary and extraordinary lives we share.

There’s a beast on the moors, a crime to be solved, and with the Ha Ha team on the case – what can go right?! You’d be absolutely barking mad to miss this pipe-smoking, new show from theatre’s funniest parodists as Holmes and Watson embark on their most dangerous adventure yet... hunting down The Hound of The Baskervilles. It’s elementary! It’s also downright hilarious as comedic national treasure Joe Pasquale, direct from his West End run in Spamalot, takes on the role of Sherlock Holmes bringing mirthful merriment to the proceedings… but will he be skating on thin ice? With writer Ben Langley as Doctor Watson and Andrew Fettes as everyone else, this sure-fire, wonderfully ridiculous show is well worth an investigation.

Ralph McTell has enjoyed a 48 year career as a quintessential singer-songwriter-guitarist and this October sees his One More For The Road tour making a welcome stop-off in Leeds. Ralph’s shows feature beautifully crafted narrative songs, combined with dextrous fingerstyle guitar playing and evocative storytelling, and will of course include the Ivor Novello award-winning Streets of London. ralphmctell.co.uk

Founded in 1988, and registered as an independent charitable organisation, The Friends have campaigned tirelessly over the years to fund the essential upkeep of the Varieties.

In addition to the £175,000 which the Friends have donated toward the recent refurbishment, their efforts over the years have also provided the venue with replacement auditorium seats, heating for the bars and hot drinks machines. These funds have been raised through activities such as street markets, cash collections, fair stalls, charity performances, dining events and the operation of city centre charity shops.

ANDREW NEWTON WORLD FAMOUS HYPNOTIST

New show, new routines – funnier than ever! ‘Newton has ramped up his act and opted for a more robust manifesto. His mischievous performance has moved perceptibly closer to the line – to the obvious delight of the audience. Getting a hypnotised volunteer to phone his mother was a masterpiece of wind-up comedy. He kept us screeching with laughter right to the end. What lifted the proceedings even more was Newton’s skill as an entertainer, something that raises him far above all others of his ilk.’

THE BAD SHEPHERDS ADRIAN EDMONDSON, TROY DONOCKLY & ANDY DINAN MUD, BLOOD & BEER

The hugely popular Bad Shepherds return to the Varieties with their unique folk-inspired interpretations of classic punk and new wave songs.

Sydney Morning Herald, May 2013

Touring to support the release of their latest album, Mud, Blood & Beer, the band revisit Madness’ Our House, The Jam’s Going Underground and deliver a fabulous rendition of No More Heroes by The Stranglers. There’s even one or two original numbers in there too!

AMATEUR TRANSPLANTS’

ADAM KAY’S BUM NOTES Amateur Transplants frontman Adam Kay sits at a grand piano and sings smutty songs. With a string of sell-out tours and Edinburgh Fringe seasons, his cutting-edge, darkly humorous re-imaginings of pop and rock classics have gained him a cult following across the UK.

SONGS OF SOLIDARITY, SUFFRAGE & STRENGTH Red Ladder’s new show and folk duo O’Hooley & Tidow.

WRONG ’UN, A SUFFRAGETTE’S STORY

TREVOR NOAH THE RACIST

February 1918, and after years of suffrage Parliament is poised to grant women the vote. In story and song, this is one Lancashire millgirl’s journey from schoolroom to prison cell and beyond.

Fresh from a record-breaking season of shows at London’s Soho Theatre and a critically acclaimed total sell-out season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, South African comedian, Trevor Noah is proud to present his critically acclaimed show, The Racist, on a ground-breaking tour of the UK.
