IS THE CHAP YOU’RE THINKING OF Actor, writer and comedian Miles Jupp has not been all that idle since 2012’s Fibber in the Heat tour, having regularly appeared on Have I Got News For You, The News Quiz, Mock The Week as well as an assortment of other shows of that ilk and acting in Alan Bennett’s People at the National Theatre for eight months. Miles will be tackling issues such as domestic imprisonment, fatherhood, having to have opinions, hot drinks, the bloody government, bad balance, housing, ill health, the ageing process, navigation, other people’s pants and, inevitably, a number of other things. Pretty spicy stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree. Bits of it will be quite mild-mannered, and some of it will probably be a tad on the stroppy side.
Directed by Justin Audibert Written by Boff Whalley Performed by Ella Harris A one-woman musical set in February 1918. Parliament is poised to grant what the suffragettes have been fighting for – votes for all women. After years of imprisonment and force-feeding, it seems their time has come. This is the story of a Lancashire mill-girl on her journey from schoolroom to prison cell and beyond.

Eddi Reader was brought into the limelight with Fairground Attraction and their single Perfect and parent album First of a Million Kisses which both topped the British charts. However, it has been her subsequent solo albums which signalled her increasing ability to assimilate different musical styles and make them all very much her own. From the traditional to the contemporary, Eddi brings to joyous life all forms of song and what sets Reader apart is the depth and quality of the emotional performance; her ability not only to move the listener but to connect her experience to that of her audience. IS (IN AND) OUT OF HIS MIND Robin Ince – Sony Gold Award-winning comedian and science enthusiast (Radio 4’s Infinite Monkey Cage with Prof Brian Cox) – presents another in his line of unhinged standup comic lectures. After dabbling in Darwin and Feynman, and cleaning out Schrodinger’s Cat, Robin now delves into his mind and possibly your mind too. From Freud and Jung to Laing and Milgram, from rats after rewards to insanity cured by ink spots, Robin looks at the last 100 years of psychiatry, psychology and skewiff brain dabblings. THE BLUES BAND
JERRY SADOWITZ
The legendary Blues Band featuring Paul Jones, Tom McGuinness, Dave Kelly, Gary Fletcher and Rob Townsend, makes a welcome return to City Varieties. The individual members of The Blues Band were already held in admiration by generations of rhythm and blues fans when they formed back in 1979. Almost two and a half decades and over 16 albums later they continue to add to their growing army of followers, and it’s not unheard of to find three generations from the same family at a gig.
Jerry Sadowitz is best known as an offensive comedian but he is also one of the world’s most skilled and creative card magicians. In this show you’ll get to see some amazing sleight of hand and some original magic projected on a large screen which means you automatically get a front row seat without having to actually sit near him! Please note that this show is not suitable for anyone with less than £22.50 (or under 18s).

JOE LONGTHORNE Joe’s big break came in 1981 when he was a finalist on LWT’s Search for a Star – this lead to appearances at the London Palladium with Bob Hope and The Talk of the Town. His repertoire of voices is endless and includes hundreds of the world’s top singers – however, he is perhaps best known for his impersonation of Shirley Bassey who has commented, “Joe can do me better than I can do myself”. During his career, he has received gold and platinum discs for his albums and enjoyed sellout concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. Founded in 1988, and registered as an independent charitable organisation, The Friends have campaigned tirelessly over the years to fund the essential upkeep of the Varieties. Events & Hospitality The Jimi Heselden Auditorium and other spaces within the City Varieties are available for private hire to host your meeting, conference or other event.* Or make your theatre visit even more memorable with intimate post show drinks and canapés for your friends, family, colleagues and clients. In addition to the £175,000 which the Friends have donated toward the recent refurbishment, their efforts over the years have also provided the venue with replacement auditorium seats, heating for the bars and hot drinks machines. These funds have been raised through activities such as street markets, cash collections, fair stalls, charity performances, dining events and the operation of city centre charity shops. Their social events regularly include luncheons, quizzes, garden parties, theatre, museum and cinema visits as well as ‘sail and shop’ trips to the continent. The Friends recently funded the completion of the Gold Leaf decoration on the Upper Circle balcony.
