Welcome to Cityview Presbyterian Church

C TYVIEW

presby terian chu rch

To Our Guests: Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Cityview. Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service. The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today. If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. We have clipboards next to each row: we call those our “Connection Cards”. These are a place for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know, and to request any information from us that you might need. Pastor Dan Adamson (dadamson@cityviewchicago.org) is always enthusiastic to meet you in person, as well.

Community Life: After the Service Each week, we linger for fellowship with one another. Please join us for refreshments in the cafeteria. Community Groups Community Groups are the primary way to get to know people at Cityview. At a Community Group, you will be invited to deepen your spiritual involvement with others. You will find a weekly opportunity to study the scripture passage for the upcoming week’s sermon and pray together. We welcome new members throughout the year. When & Where Monday / 7:30 PM Nick Lake - nickjlake@gmail.com 2455 West Ohio, Unit 16W Thursday / 7:00 PM Malissa Mackey - malissa.mackey@cru.org 180 N Jefferson St. Apt. 1202

For Children: Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service. Nursery is provided during the service for children 2 years of age and younger. Children ages three through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the greeting portion of the service. If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Interim Children’s Ministry Coordinator Lynda Adamson (lyndabadamson@gmail.com).

The Liturgy Preparing in Stillness

We often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read the reflections, look over the rest of the service or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.

Call to Worship

We need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas- and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.

Confession of Sin

Because sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.

Assurance of Grace

Christ has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.

Worship Through Giving

Because money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.

The Sermon

Some view the sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.

Communion

Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with his church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament.

The Benediction

God always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

3

ORDER OF WORSHIP For many, Christianity is just a beautiful dream. It’s a world in which everyday reality goes a bit blurred. It’s nostalgic, cozy, and comforting. But real Christianity isn’t like that at all. Take Christmas, for instance: a season of nostalgia, of carols and candles and firelight and happy children. But that misses the point completely. Christmas is not a reminder that the world is really quite a nice old place. It reminds us that the world is a shockingly bad old place, where wickedness flourishes unchecked, where children are murdered. . . Christmas is God lighting a candle; and you don’t light a candle in a room that’s already full of sunlight. You light a candle in a room that’s so murky that the candle, when lit, reveals just how bad things really are. Christmas, then, is not a dream, a moment of escapism. Christmas is the reality, which shows up the rest of reality. And for Christmas, here, read Christianity. Either Jesus is the Lord of the world, and all reality makes sense in his light, or he is dangerously irrelevant to the problems and possibilities of today’s world. There is no middle ground. Either Jesus was, and is, the Word of God, or he, and the stories Christians tell about him, are lies. — N.T. Wright

God Calls Us Call to Worship Advent Reading - Isaiah 7:10-16 God spoke again to Ahaz. This time he said, “Ask for a sign from your God. Ask anything. Be extravagant. Ask for the moon!” But Ahaz said, “I’d never do that. I’d never make demands like that on God!” So Isaiah told him, “Then listen to this, government of David! It’s bad enough that you make people tired with your pious, timid hypocrisies, but now you’re making God tired. So the Master is going to give you a sign anyway. Watch for this: a girl who is presently a virgin will get pregnant. She’ll bear a son and name him Immanuel (God-With-Us). By the time the child is twelve years old, able to make moral decisions, the threat of war will be over. Relax, those two kings that have you so worried will be out of the picture. But also be warned: God will bring on you and your people and your government a judgment worse than anything since the time the kingdom split, when Ephraim left Judah. The king of Assyria is coming!” 4

Merciful God, always with us, always coming, we confess that we do not know how to prepare for your Advent. We have forgotten how to hope in miracles; we have ignored the promise of your kingdom; we get distracted by all the busyness of this season. Forgive us, God. Grant us the simple wonder of the shepherds, the intelligent courage of the Magi, and the patient faith of Mary and Joseph, that we may journey with them to Bethlehem and find the good news of a child born for us. Now, in the quiet of our hearts, we ask you to make us ready for his coming. Amen.

Assurance of Grace - based on Jeremiah 33:14-16 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time, I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.” People of God: Jesus Christ, our Lord, whose coming we announce in this season, is our righteousness. In Christ, we are made right with God. Thanks be to God. Brothers and Sisters, you have heard God’s holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?

Prayers of the People Loving Father, we thank you for the church, your body here on earth. Continue to build your house through your Spirit, calling many unto yourself, redeeming us from ourselves, and shaping us into your image, loving as we have been loved. For this, O Lord, we pray: Lord, hear our prayer. Lord of all nations, extend your peace into parts of our city that are hurting. Equip our leaders with vision, understanding, and integrity; help them address needs in the city with wisdom and skill, that many will be blessed and your name exalted in our midst. For this, O Lord, we pray: Lord, hear our prayer. Spirit of compassion, you called a people unto yourself, small among the nations, and in Jesus you drew near to outcasts, the afflicted and marginalized. Draw near those among us who are suffering, sick, and weary. Warm our hearts to their need, and move us toward them in love. For this, O Lord, we pray: Lord, hear our prayer.

Silent Prayer The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 11

God Speaks To Us Sermon Text - Isaiah 7:10-16 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” 13 And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. 15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted. 10

God Strengthens Us Confession of Faith The Apostles’ Creed Christian, what do you believe? I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Invitation to the Lord’s Table Prayer of Thanksgiving and Consecration The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Words of Institution We break bread in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and proclaim the mystery of the faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us; Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Distribution of the Bread and the Cup Prayers for Reflection Prayer for those searching for truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer for those struggling with sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. Amen. Prayer of commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Be Rang And

light: birth: morn:

Benediction & Dismissal May the peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.

Amen.

Let us go forth to serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Thanks be to God!

Please note that the offering collected on Sunday, Dec. 29 will be the last one of the tax year. Any mailed-in checks must be postmarked by December 31 to be considered for 2013. Each week a group meets at the Adamson home (1539 West Jackson) from 6-7pm on Sundays to pray for one another, the church, the city and the world. The next time this group will meet is December 22nd and will pick back up on January 12 in the New Year. Contact Dan for more information. Help us welcome those who are newer to Cityview by hosting a Sunday Lunch. It’s a simple commitment- just pick a nearby location and eat lunch with some other folks on a Sunday after church. We have a need for hosts in the coming new year. Please contact Dan Adamson or Jenny Avila if you would be willing to serve the church in this way. JANUARY 18, 10AM Join the ladies of Cityview for a relaxed time of food, discussion, and prayer at Lauren’s home (2130 W. Chicago Avenue, Apt 2R). This month’s topic is Sabbath rest and work. Contact Lauren Mathues for details.
