Geetanjali Salon opens at Select CITYWALK. And actor Lisa Haydon is its first patron! Catch her smoking hot look on our cover...

The celebration began with a shoot with Lisa Haydon, an Indian supermodel and actress, best known for her work in the Bollywood comedy-drama film Queen, and now also the brand ambassador for Geetanjali Salons.

Simply sensuous The look for the shoot, designed by Sumit Israni, was sensuous yet simplistic with smoky eyes, minimalistic nude make up and soft waves. The hairstyle and concept was based on Sumit’s interpretation of the flow of life with its invariable spontaneity and continuity. Geetanjali Salon is now open at Select CITYWALK so what are you waiting for get the gorgeous look of our cover girl Lisa Haydon this festive season at the salon.

They dreamt of a shopping centre that would be the buzzing spot of India’s capital and did everything they could to make it a reality under the guidance of Mr. Inder Sharma. Today, Select CITYWALK is not only Delhi’s but the country’s most admired shopping centre. In 2003, Mr Arora, Mrs Ghei and Mr

For the next four years, the team burnt the midnight oil to make Select CITYWALK India’s premier shopping and entertainment hub, officially seeing it inaugurated on October 12, 2007, by the former lieutenant governor of Delhi, Tejinder Khanna.

From the visionaries’ desk... “It has been 11 glorious years since the date that we bid for this land. From brick and mortar, we have evolved to a living, breathing successful enterprise. Select CITYWALK is a result of the love, wishes and blessings of many partners, patrons, staff, admirers and our beloved Guruji… I THANK YOU ALL!!” INDER SHARMA, Chairman

We envisioned a shopping centre par excellence when we bid for the land that today supports Select CITYWALK. This shopping centre, covering a mammoth 1.3 mn sq.ft. area, was constructed in mere two and a half years. Even today, we strive to be the best in security and maintenance and continuously evolve to upgrade it to give a new look to the visitors.

YOGRAJ ARORA, Director, Select CITYWALK

From brands to services, events, décor and much more, Select CITYWALK is built on a foundation of hard work and dedicated team effort. But we owe our success to the love and affection that our patrons continually give us with each visit to the shopping centre! This is why we aim to bring you an international shopping experience right here in the heart of the city – one that will keep you coming back for more! We live by a mantra – Customers first!

Select CITYWALK is a journey of innovation, passion and creativity. We strive every day to bring moments of joy and unmatched experience to all our patrons. Start at the beginning, take a walk around our basements and see the graffiti. But the excitement never ends, get ready to visit the Zoo here, as we work on another art initiative to keep the surprises coming!

/INTERVIEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Anniversary

IN CONVERSATION WITH...

...executive director of Select CITYWALK Yogeshwar Sharma who talks about his 10 year long association with the shopping centre

Select CITYWALK is the result of the love and affection of our customers, the creativity of our retailers, a dedicated team and the never-ending support of our stakeholders.

16

You’ve risen to become the Executive Director of Select CITYWALK, one of the premier shopping centre’s in the country. What prompted you to work in this industry? It is very special to work for a shopping centre because the money cycle starts here. Anyone who makes money, be it from any profession whatsoever, wants to spend that money by shopping. So it is the beginning of the money cycle. Rather than being in middle of the chain, I wanted to be at the place where it all starts. People travel the world to shop, my job is to be at the centre day in and day out. What could be more fun? A lot of people talk about how they feel Select CITYWALK is very unique, that they feel a special connection to it. Why is it so? Life condition of a place is determined by life condition of people behind it and also of those who visit it and make it their own. People here are more positive and positivity is contagious! From the guards to staff, everyone takes pride in the centre. That collective life condition creates this unique factor.

What is the wackiest thing at the shopping centre that you’ll never forget? First queue outside Zara. I couldn’t believe the long lines. First to get in, then to queue up for changing room and queue for billing and coming back for exchange, standing in the queue again. Why is Select CITYWALK’s attrition rate so low? The field that we are in, creativity is of utmost importance and that is what we let people do here. We give them creative freedom. If they are reasonable, if their point makes some sense, they are given a chance. We want to be overruled by our younger colleagues. We don’t give jobs, we give careers. People get very attached to working at the Select CITYWALK, what do you think is the reason? People leave but many stay back and they say good things about the management. If I ask a colleague to do some work, he’ll not do it exactly the way I had asked, he’ll apply his mind and sometimes even correct me. All our retailers are like a part of a huge family. There is an amazing sense of ownership.

7 SUCCESS SECRETS

Here’s what makes Select CITYWALK Delhi’s most loved shopping centre

Select CITYWALK was the first shopping centre to modernize Security & in the first year itself it was declared the Best Secured Mall of the country. Our Security personnel are not only trained in safety & security but they are trained & motivated to help elderly / differently able people/children & ladies. The shopping centre also has the largest numbers of CCTV cameras with effective monitoring for 24X 7. DNS BISHT, VP - Security

For us, the initiative to provide the best hospitality begins right from the basement. Our security guards, parking marshalls, and housekeeping personnel are all trained on a weekly basis to inculcate the values that we at Select CITYWALK firmly believe in and want to communicate to those who visit. SHASHI SHARMA, Sr. VP – Engineering and Operations

This sprawling shopping centre that you see today has had it’s own humble beginnings. Back in 2007 when we launched, we worked very hard to ensure that all our tenants perform well. I still remember the happiness in the teams eyes when we received a revenue share of Rs. 6261 from a store that was only about 340 sq.ft. From those beginnings to where we have reached today is a result of all visitors and patrons who have showered us with their love and affection. S. SRINIVAS, VP – Finance and Accounts

This shopping centre was created with one simple vision from our Chairman and directors – to give this city an international shopping experience. Whether it be when we opened in 2007, or today, 7 years later, that vision remains consistent as ever. We strive every single day to bring that to you. Most concepts that have evolved in this shopping centre have come from a hospitality background – including a concierge, manager on duty and many more. PANKAJ ROHATGIA, AVP – STRATEGIC INITIATIVES

The reason Citywalk has generated such tremendous interest in the international as well as Indian retail community is its unique concept and a radically fresh development approach. One major difference between this and others is that the tenant mix and adjacencies are being planned and meticuously looked into. Realty Plus, February-April, 2009

Arjun Sharma, Director, Select CITYWALK: Through the event A Cause For Paws, commemorating World Animal Day, we want to tell people that older dogs are beautiful and need equal affection. We have had a huge connect as far as adoption of dogs is concerned. In the past three years, more than 2,000 puppies have been adopted. Hindustan Times, October 14, 2012

Only about a quarter of 180 malls in India are making money and Select CITYWALK is among one of them. MINT, April 2, 2011

Neeraj Ghei, director, Select CITYWALK We want to stay relevant to the lives of our customers. The south Delhi public, who make up a majority of our customers, are very aspirational. We plan shows – art displays, music, promotion of foreign travel – for them at the mall. Times of India, April 4

Neeraj Kumar, director-general (prisons), Delhi: The initiative - Redefining Life Behind Bars - by Select Citywalk is a great step to rehabilitate and reintegrate the prisoners into society. Business Standard, October 23, 2011

The objective of the scheme is to become the first choice for shopping in the capital, and to become the city’s pride. Retail Asia, September 2006

Neeraj Ghei, Director Select CITYWALK We want our mall to be a place that goes beyond just shopping and entertainment. It should be a place for people to learn, engage in community activities and and fulfil their social responsibilities. Hindustan Times, June 12, 2012

Pretty much a cool girl’s wardrobe staple, the iconic biker jacket trend is here to stay. Embellishments or prints - this year these moto-jackets have gone a notch above the regular. Rather than just wearing it the sporty way, you could team it up with a maxi and sport this trend in a refreshing new look this season, giving it a feminine touch. Or you can also go bold and in the face by trying the all-leather look.

Extravagant pieces in golden are being much spoken about this season. The colour adapts itself to the fabric it’s paired with; it’ll look liquid gold in some collections, while elsewhere, rural hues of warm gold or burnished gold take over. The colour will make you step out of your comfort zone, and by the end of it, you’ll be glad you did. As a standalone colour, metallic gold is quite bold and strong. LEATHER LUST

Skip the jeans this season and pair leather pants with a simple top and ankle boots for an off-duty look - or take it into the evening with a tux jacket and strappy sandals. Leather shorts or leather skirts are the ultimate transition item: a fabric made to keep you warm in a silhouette meant to show some skin. This season a pleated leather mini skirt with a white blouse gives an instant elegance to your outfit. The pleated style adds a feminine touch to the otherwise bold leather fabric. A statement leather dress with high heels is for the daring sort. Try the burst of colours in this fabric too. Cherry and tan are popular these days.

Dark blue skinny jeans. Check. Coloured denim shorts. Check. A full-sleeves buttoned denim shirt. Check. All this is passé now. Denim on denim is what is going to break all conventional barriers and set the denim trend apart this fall/ winter. Once a faux pas today this is already an instant hit with international fashionistas. Acid-washed skinny jeans and a chambray shirt tucked in with black slinky stilettos is the easiest way to try this street style trend. But denim overalls are what is making news this season. A full body denim jumpsuit or a denim maxi with a slide slit is what is hot and here to stay.

Decode the fall/ winter colour conundrum with this comprehensible colour guide

by

NATASHA’S CLOSET

I often find that while people manage to mix and match different pieces in their outfits, they struggle to match the right colours together. Either they make the cardinal sin of ‘ditto matching’ everything or completely throwing off their outfit by wearing two colours that just don’t work together. So I’m going to attempt decoding the fall colour mystery by giving you 7 fall/winter ‘must have’ colours and a guide to wearing them right. White or cream are neutrals and can be worn with any of the colours mentioned below, but if you’re in the mood to be more adventures then follow this guide:

Ex-model, fashion stylist, teacher and image consultant with a degree from FIT, NY. From teaching at Elite School of modeling to working with Channel V to styling celebrities, covered the entire gamut of fashion and loved every minute of it! Currently, Head of Fashion and Brand evaluation at Select CITYWALK.

SAPPHIRE This deep tone graced many runways this season. Since an ensemble in this shade of blue tends to be a strong look, break the depth with texture or patterns. Alternatively choose to accentuate the madness with tone on tone.

SANGRIA This deep red formally ruled the nails and lips department. But now it can be found everywhere in fashion from casual chic to evening wear. Match it by playing its underlying tone and accessorise with black or metallic accents.

MISTY With its pastel blue undertone, this light lavender looks chic in a monochromatic ensemble of slightly slouchy shapes. It also adds some romance to basic greys. You can toughen it up with black leather pants or booties, and for even more contrast work in an accessory in a similar or more vibrant shade.

34

September-October 2014 selectcitywalk.com

OLIVE The recipe for mixing greens? Combine with other earthy shades! Tone on tone isn’t your only option. Use shiny gold to highlight the hue’s undertones or go for neutrals. Prefer to add just a hint of lush colour? Try a deep red lip for an effect that is glam, not grungy.

TOMATO

Choose this daring saturated shade in a dress to really stand out. If you are on the fence then link it to pieces in pewter, camel or charcoal. A plum lipstick could add a touch of safistication to your look.

MUSTARD So many currently popular shades benefit from a spoonful of zesty mustard. This versatile hue is specifically fresh with fall’s blues and greens, yet feels fashion-forward when worn with tobacco or rust. For a more casual spin, try a mustard sweater, a navy blazer and a dark jeans. Wear this outfit with red flats to add a punch.

DUSTY PINK This light greyish lavender looks fresh against clean minimal styling. If you prefer to play it up, then rich fabrics will bring this near pastel shade to life, as will blending it with purples, mauves or even eggplant. Get it right and look unabashedly feminine!

working mom with a packed schedule, Stuti Chandok, transforms some leisure time into quality moments with her 16-year-old daughter at Select CITYWALK. The shopping centre had always been more than just a hop in, hop out destination for her. Here’s where Stuti first realised her growing daughter knows fashion better than her and since then the duo brainstorms fashion and trends at Select CITYWALK during their many shopping trips. She is my fashion consultant and both she and I love coming here,” says the 42-year-old clinical music therapist who thinks Select CITYWALK defines Delhi shoppers and their style.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE STATEMENT? I stick to the classics, mostly - jeans and a white Shirt. I also love long dresses and skirts. I like the corporate look with a dash of femininity. It’s a look that radiates strength along with a petiteness. As far as make-up is concerned, I usually stick to a light lipstick - maybe add a dash of gloss and kajal on occasion.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU VISIT SELECT CITYWALK? I’m a single working mother. And I stay in

STUTI CHANDHOK Gurgaon. Select CITYWALK is central and very convenient. I come here every week. Besides, it’s a one-stop shopping centre. I get everything here - from branded stuff right to some quirky item at the flea market. Besides, I can shop, meet up with friends, watch movies and do my weekly grocery shopping from Modern Bazaar - all from one place. This arrangement works for a professional such as me. And even if I don’t want to do anything, I can just sit with my coffee.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE HANGOUT SPOTS? I love Starbucks, Mamagoto and Joy Luck Moon.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE BRANDS? I usually shop from Promod, Zara, United Colors of Benetton and Steve Madden. And for my make-up fix there’s Sepgora and my favourite Bobbi Brown.

WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS THIS SHOPPING CENTRE APART FROM OTHERS? This shopping centre has set a standard and stuck to it consistently over the years. There is an elitism to the shopping centre - I see people actually dressing up before they come here. I think it defines Delhi shoppers and their style.

NAMRATA PURI

S

ome people dress up to be at Select CITYWALK, whereas others may just amble in a pair of denim shorts and a loose chic top. Stylist Namrata Puri, 28, falls in the second category. “I am the anti-stylist stylist,” she says, laughing. “I don’t try and do too much. I keep it simple and comfortable.” For Namrata Select CITYWALK is the shopping centre to be. While she feels Select CITYWALK’s footfall is not just quantity but also quality, she also thinks the shopping centre rewards its shoppers for their loyalty.

WHAT’S YOUR STYLE STATEMENT? Fashion should be comfortable, above everything else. My style is very wearable. I think most of the time where some people go wrong is that they do too much - wear too many brands, or show off. But for me, style should be effortless. You can’t copy somebody’s style. As much as I might like Miranda Kerr, I can’t start dressing like her. Fashion is individuality and effortlessness. Don’t follow trends, set your own standards!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE BRANDS? I would go to Satya Paul for their prints. Zara and Mango, too, as they have lots of colour. I think even Shivan & Narresh will be good, though I haven’t visited the store yet. I’m sure it’ll be very holiday-like stuff. I also love Forever New, Bebe, and Sephora.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT SELECT CITYWALK? It offers amazing variety to shoppers. I come here to shop quite frequently. In fact, this is the only shopping centre I visit. It attracts a better crowd than the other shopping centres. People are actually shopping and getting involved. Apart from that, I love the food here. I find Mamagoto food yummy. Apart from the usual though, I think what makes people keep coming back to Select CITYWALK is its really good rewards programme. It rewards people very well for being loyal. Also, it has one of the best parking lots in the city – clean, well-lit and very organised. People come back because they are treated so well here.

W

hen Kabir Kochhar, managing partner of digital marketing agency, The Glitch, steps into Select CITYWALK he looks forward to the same wholesome experience, the shopping centre offers him every time he turns to it for one shopping need or the other. For Kabir Select CITYWALK, is a saviour, a guide, hang out place, witness to his daughter Gia’s first macaron moment...these to just name a few...one of the most frequent shoppers at Select CITYWALK, Kabir Kochhar tells us why he keeps coming back to the shopping centre.

WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL STYLE STATEMENT? My style has evolved from the blue jeans, black tee routine. People expect you to dress to fit a style mould. When you are expected to deliver high-end services for people, you might as well dress to impress and gain their trust and confidence.

DOES SELECT CITYWALK HELP? Absolutely! My office is close to Select CITYWALK. For an emergency client meet, I hop here and buy a nice stuff from Zara or Burberry Brit. Zara also has really nice suits. Collective definitely and Thomas Pink are my other usual haunts. I identify with the wolf of Thomas Pink (laughs).

WHAT ELSE BRINGS YOU HERE APART FROM YOUR WARDROBE NEEDS? It’s a lovely place to hang out with the family. My wife and I bought a lightweight stroller from Mother Care. We go to Mamagoto and my daughter likes all the colours. She loved the Independence Day decorations. She loves the visual appeal of the shopping centre. The wife too loves it. It’s a wholesome experience - grab a meal, shop, watch a movie.

WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THOSE WHO SAY SHOPPING CENTRES ARE FOR WOMEN AND NOT FOR MEN? There are enough activities to keep us entertained while the ladies are busy shopping. For men, it is more like a shopping session twice a year. But if I am here for a movie I end up picking something. There’s an ease of shopping here. Impulse purchases are a very male thing.

“My daughter likes all the colours here. She loved the Independence Day decorations. She adores the visual appeal of the shopping centre.”

other to a six-month old, Lagan Gill’s day starts at Select CITYWALK. The 35-year-old, leadership consultant calls it her second home not just because the shopping centre is her one-stop-shop but also because she finds it the most baby friendly shopping centre in Delhi. Lagan promptly points out how Select CITYWALK is the only place where she could see feeding rooms and change tables for babies. “I never found such facility in any other so called fancy shopping centres in Delhi,” she exclaimed. Here is why the lady who worked out at the shopping centre’s Fitness First Platinum gym till she was 9-months pregnant calls herself a complete Select CITYWALK person.

HOW DID THE ASSOCIATION WITH SELECT CITYWALK START? I used to go to Fitness First Platinum in London so I opted for the gym and it thoroughly lived up to my expectations. The gym here is pretty similar to the one in London - the trainers are trained in similar manner, the equipment is similar, even the music they play is the same. My trainer was trained in the USA in prenatal gym training so I even worked out till I was 9-months pregnant. Gradually, the gym connect extended into a strong bond with the shopping centre.

selectcitywalk.com September-October 2014

AND HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? Anything that I need to run my daily life is available here . Whether I need to pick up make up, toiletries, groceries... It is my one-stop shop. I grab my toiletries from Sephora, make up from Bobbi Brown/ Chanel, medicines from GNC Pharmacy. I get my tailoring done here too. There is no need to go anywhere else.

WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL STYLE STATEMENT? I like to keep my wardrobe staples stylish so I go to The Collective for my jeans and pick up my everyday tops from Zara.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT SELECT CITYWALK? My six-month-old is at the shopping centre since he was two weeks old. The only reason I can even think of hanging out with him at a shopping centre is because Select CITYWALK is so baby friendly. I have been to almost every fancy shopping centre in Delhi and most of them do not have any feeding room or change table for babies and here we have almost 4 or 5.

ANUJ LALL

hile we had regular shoppers frequenting Select CITYWALK, we also have experts from the field of fashion scouting the centre for their niche fashion needs. Freelance stylist and professor of fashion design at Pearl Academy, Anuj Lall is one such fashion ‘connoisseur’. And we fare pretty well on his benchmarks. While he thought he could not style his own hair himself for the shoot, he also kept reminding us, his favourite hairstylist must be right at the second floor of the centre at Looks salon!

YOUR ASSOCIATION WITH SELECT CITYWALK? My association with Select CITYWALK goes a long way since I am also a freelance stylist and need to scout places for sourcing for fashion shoots. I have seen the centre growing from just another shopping centre in Delhi to being one of the best and most loved one in the capital.

FAVOURITE BRANDS AT SELECT CITYWALK? I love Thomas Pink as it defines my style. You will always see me in semi-formals like a shirt with jeans. Apart from this I love shopping at Zara and Tommy Hilfiger as they have the latest designs and trends.

HOW IS SELECT CITYWALK DIFFERENT FROM THE REST? There are two things that make Select CITYWALK a class apart - firstly it is the only shopping centre where brands quickly receive items if they go out of stock and secondly the staff is very well trained and efficient. I remember coming to the centre for sourcing during sale time, stores were in a mess with clothes all over the place but I was surprised to see all of it stacked up in clean organised piles when I returned to the centre next morning.

WHAT MAKES YOU COME BACK TO SELECT CITYWALK? Looks Salon (grins). I have a personal favourite hairstylist at Looks salon and even if shopping is not on my mind I still come back to Select CITYWALK for a perfect haircut every now and then. Now, Gitanjali too has opened and I have more reasons than one to come back (smiles).

“Select CITYWALK is class apart firstly because it is the only centre where brands receive fresh stock very fast and secondly the staff is very well trained and efficient.”

DOES SELECT CITYWALK HELP YOU IN KEEPING UP WITH YOUR STYLE QUOTIENT? I think there are all kinds of brands here at the shopping centre. You don’t have to go ten different places to do your shopping, it’s all available in this one place. And it has a lot of variety. If I don’t get it in one store, there are so many others to choose from. I personally love Zara and Promod. For kurtas I prefer Fab India. But when it comes to my go-to store, it’s Charles & Keith. WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT THE SHOPPING CENTRE? The best part about this shopping centre is that even if you don’t come here to buy something, once you start strolling around, you invariably end up buying something. It’s a great place to just chill. The ambience is topnotch. It’s not like the other shopping centres don’t have brands, but somehow shopping there is just not the same. Besides, the staff here has remained the same, so they know us shoppers by face and sometimes even name. It adds to the shopping experience, makes one more comfortable. Plus Select CITYWALK also has the reward system - you shop, you get points and then you get gift cards. That’s a lot of fun. The entire experience is - right from the shopping to the decorations. The entire vibe is very positive.

ANY SPECIAL MEMORY OF SELECT CITYWALK? Almost 30 of us turned up for a treasure hunt at the shopping centre and I remember running from one end of the shopping centre to the other looking for the hidden items. It was a lot of fun. Besides, we have been celebrating birthdays, parties and dinners here. So there are pleasant memories galore.

normal day in 33-year-old Taruna Seth’s life starts at Fitness First Platinum at Select CITYWALK, to catching a quick coffee at Starbucks, picking up breakfast from Pita Pit or Johnny Rockets and rushing to work. Luckily, Taruna’s own enterprise, luxury travel consultancy, Pearl Luxe Experiences is close to the shopping centre and the lady does not hesitate to end her day at the centre as well! So here is how she calls it a day - grab dinner at Mamgoto, satiate the sweet tooth at L’Opera (understandably so that our loving shopper is six-months pregnant and craves for sweets these days) and drive back home. Here is her Select CITYWALK story.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE BRANDS? I love Zara, it’s one of the best high street brands ever. There’s always something for everyone. All the clothing is very much in vogue - the tops, dresses, pants - even the shoes - are very comfortable. I like Mango too.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HANGOUT PLACE? Starbucks and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Also, L’Opera. I watch a lot of movies here. I live in Chattarpur so it’s very close to my house, and this is where I head to when I need to unwind. It’s one of the best places to hang out.

ANY SPECIAL MEMORY YOU ASSOCIATE WITH THE SHOPPING CENTRE? Every time I eat out at Mamagoto. That place is awesome and so much fun. Not to mention the food, which is delicious.

FALL FACE MAGIC

Bushy eyebrows, dark lips, dewy skin, glitter nails, bright liners, shimmering lids and retro lashes... we help you get the season’s makeup trends right words

| Rajveer Saluja

T

he makeup trends for fall 2014 are out and they don’t fall short of chutzpah, style and oomph. It’s time to embrace the dark colours like oxblood, for your lips, well defined sheer metallic eye makeup and flaunt eyelashes that are long and so ‘60s. Here is a list of makeup trends for this season that you must flaunt to look like a diva.

1 BROWS

After witnessing the likes of Keira Knightley, Jennifer Lopez and Gwen Stefani in their bushy avatars, we agree to the fact that a pair of thick eyebrows definitely endows a face with a younger and fresher vibe. If you haven’t taken a cue from all the celebrities adorning full, thick eyebrows instead of their former thin, scrawny wisps, it’s time we say it out loud to you that bold is beautiful and more so if it comes to eyebrows. Bold eyebrows, normally considered masculine, can be made to look feminine by keeping them arched and well defined. It is being said that well defined thick eyebrows takes years off the face and we absolutely agree.

DEWY SKIN

Smooth, creamy skin with a radiant, pearly glow is timeless and sophisticated. But for winter, dewy makeup wins a high five and is your knight in shining armour as it makes the skin look luminescent, hydrated and smooth. Another plus of dewy makeup is that it’s so basic and can be worn to work or a night out. Be it a dress, or a party ensemble or Indian traditional wear, dewy makeup goes well with just everything. Too basic to be done, one just needs a good moisturiser, concealer, face cream and a hint of translucent powder and you are raring to turn heads with admiration. In case the makeup gets cakey or oily, you can highlight the cheekbones to get that impeccable iridescent look.

The word is adventurous this season when it comes to makeup, so how can we miss nails? Glitter nails have caught the fancy of one and all this season and are a huge crowd puller. Jewel textured lacquer or a coat of glitter over matte base - the choice is yours to make. But this season bling is in again and it’s all about going flashy and over the top. A base of silver or black or gold, a coat of glitter will do the trick and make you all ready to catch eye balls. So to get this look we recommend nail lacquers from Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Nail Polish in black pearl; MAC’s Everything That Glitters. The list is endless. So time to adorn that shimmer and soak up your talons in a pool of bling and glitterati.

EYE LASHES

Fluttering eyelashes like a damsel in distress has always enamoured men and made them go weak in the knees, and this season you are officially licensed to flutter to your heart’s delight as it’s time for faux eye lashes. Gucci, Versace or Prada, New York Fashion Week Fall 2014 or the Paris Fashion Week- all were flooded with models exhibiting faux eyelashes. A great way to enhance tired eyes, faux eye lashes add a lot of drama and edge to your look. Thick eyebrows and long eyelashes go hand in hand in getting the look right and doll up any dull face. But the trick here is to avoid anything that’s a tad too big or winged, as it can look dramatic and take away the fizz from the look.

If you didn’t get enough inspiration from Katy Perry flaunting blue eyeliner in the song Dark Horse, we would hereby like to give our thumbs up to the look. Normal boring black eyeliners are passé. Instead make way for ultra bright and fresh streaks of turquoise blue, cobalt, aqua, neon blue and orchid. Get playful sophistication with these shades while keeping your lips in a shade of nude. Not only is the look dramatic but can fire up any style. Try it winged or the smoky way or even plain simple streak, the eye-popping colours ensure that you don’t go unnoticed. The look was a big hit at Kenzo’s show in New York Fashion Week Fall 2014 and is an absolute favourite of Hollywood with celebs like Jennifer Hudson, Gwen Stefani and Emma Stone.

DARK LIPS

This fall you don’t just sip wine, you wear it. Let your lips do the talking in sexy, screaming-forattention shades. New York Fashion Week Fall 2014 was smeared in the bold dark colours with models flaunting shades of deep blackberry for fashion label Zimmerman, wine for Anna Sui and purples for Rebecca Taylor. And celebs like Kylie Jenner, Kim and Khloe Kardashian are rocking this look at every red carpet event. Invest in colours like plush satiny shades in fine wine, black cherry. Not only are these shades high on the fashion quotient, they warm up to every skin colour and spell elegance and style. Make sure to keep your eyes simple and not over-the-top dramatic while flaunting these vibrant shades.

Bringing oomph, glamour and razzmatazz to your boring or dull ensemble is easy when you have a bright metallic eye shadow to your rescue. Dramatic eye makeup has always been popular but metallic eye shadow takes eye makeup to another level. Being termed punky and futuristic, the look is inspired from the ’90s and gives ample choice of palette. Don’t just settle for the usual bronze, gold or copper, get all quirky with silver, plums, lush emeralds and flamboyant turquoise.

NAIL IT RIGHT

Stay updated on the chicest trends in nails, from red carpet manicures to notable runway moments words

September-October 2014 selectcitywalk.com

I

t’s either the nudes or the reds this fall. The world of nail fashion is standing on the two extremes of the colour palette. Hues and tones of nudes rule the roost but reds and purples are putting traffic to a halt as well. New York Fashion Week 2014 was reverberating with sheer pink, peaches to umpteen opaque variations. If summer was all about bright and warm, fall is in all subtle avatars of nudes and extremely outrageous shades of purples, reds and pinks.

NUDENAMA

Not only are the shades a classic, but uplift the style quotient of manicures of any length. If brighter versions of nudes interest you and sheer beiges still haven’t caught your fancy, then invest in shimmer and sparkle. Nude lovers who want to add chutzpah to their nudes should paint their talons in cream opaques, beautiful sheer pinks and beiges that look no different than your skin. So say it all, bare it all, with nudes of your choice.

RED READY

Reds are bringing the traffic to a halt again. Fall 2014 welcomes vampy shades of red, burgundy and purple, and demands that our paw nails be smeared in blood. Tips of models were adorned with tones of red for designer labels like Yigal Azrouel, Rebecca Minkoff, Burberry and Costello Tagliapietra, and Kenneth Cole showcased his models in shades of purple. Love it or hate it, this fall is all about saying it loud with deep purples, burnt reds and rich mahoganies.

GROOM IS THE WORD

The catwalks have dictated that fall/ winter 2014 nails should look super-groomed, whatever colour or texture trend you buy into. Whether your new season wardrobe is featuring punk get-up or glam ladylike looks, marry your nails with your accessories and mirror them with your makeup.

Fuschia magic, Clinique

Over the moon: Nail art has been mostly dormant this season but half-moons are still leading the path for fashionistas who are no less than Salvador Dali or Pablo Picasso when it comes to art. A rebellious take on the French manicure which is at the tip of the nail, half moons are drawn around the cuticles or at the tip of the nail. It’s a trend that has been revived again after the 1940s but with a fresh and modern touch. A regular in the New York Paris Fll 2014, half moon manicures were a rage when models showcased the work of designers Alexandre Herchcovitch, Zang Toi and Rolando Santana.

Two-toned trick: The fade is a great way to play with colours you are already comfortable with. It is the best alternative for ultra-feminine nail paints as ombre nails look trendy, cool and different. Ombre manicure creates a a gradient effect. A light colour on the bottom of the nail gradually blends into a darker colour towards the tip. Getting it perfect can take time and practice, but you can rock the look once you get it right. There are many variations to it, like glitter ombre. Give your fingertips a fadeout and nail this trend.

METALLIC MARATHON

Pretty pink, Sephora

For the daring nail art queens, shades of gunshot and greys are screaming for all their love and attention. Bold and shiny metallics in shades of gold, dark grey and black have been conspicuous in the collection of fashion labels like Proenza Schouler, Mary Hoffman and Dannijo. Top your base coat with a shine of heavy metal or go full drama and action with profound coats of metallic mayhem. Silver grey, metallic burgundies are other revolutionary shades that get the thumbs up this fall.

Metallic nail spoiler alert Removing metallic nail paint can be tricky. Here is how you should go about it. Firstly cut off the extensions of all your metallic nails and then buff their surfaces. Next use cuticle oil on to the cuticle and skin area surrounding the nails. Now dip the hand into a bowl of acetone, such that each of the metallic nails is fully soaked in them. After 5-6 minutes if they are ready to come off, then you can easily remove them with a cuticle pusher by swiping motions. Glitter glamour, NYX (available at Sephora) `340

Nailed it OF GEMS & JEWELS

Rhinestones are a great way to add glamour and sparkle to nails. Set the stone in semi-dry nail varnish. The polish needs to be dry enough not to smudge when you place the stone on the nail but wet enough to dry onto the stone.

selectcitywalk.com September-October 2014

TEXTURE FIXTURE

Textured nail paints are hard to miss. A look that adds too much glamour and oomph to one’s talons are attention seekers that would draw all eyes on you. This look can be achieved by adding glitter particles to a matte base or simply buying textured nail paint.

MEME MAGIC

Running out of nail art ideas? Over the past year, we’ve had everything from literature-inspired nail art to artist-inspired to comic-inspired nail arts. Now it’s time for meme-inspired nail arts. Whether from the internet or a random smiley or emoticons - say hello to this new nail art.

the power to notch up a simple outfit by its luxurious glimmer. But when accessorising it, there are a couple of do’s and don’ts one must always adhere to. At work to retain the professional understated feel, pair a yellow gold watch with a toned-down colour palette.

ROSE GOLD: Though silver and gold are classic colours in watches, rose gold is the new entrant. It’s feminine, trendy and super sleek, and a refreshing change from the current yellow golds we are already so used to seeing. Oh well, it’s time for my snack now). They are the ones who will always know that when you’re hungry it can feel like the world is coming to an end. Having experienced such a melodramatic turn, I can tell you that Select CITYWALK has managed to save me 7 times from feeling the despair that comes from hunger!

PASSION CHEESE PARTY PLATTER

FETA CHEESE

Ever had to entertain at short notice? You’ll know exactly how a good cheese platter can enliven the dullest parties. But you’ll also know how tough it can be to get great quality cheese in our city. So Passion Cheese is my go-to place when I needed to host a last minute get together for foodie friends! A little feta, parmesan, gruyere, cheddar, and brie, served with crackers, slices of baguette, sliced apples, pear, grapes and nuts and a great looking platter to keep people engaged and happy is ready!

RED MANGO WHEN I’M ON A DIET

MIXED BERRY PARFAIT

So it’s perfectly acceptable for a foodie to go on a diet. Don’t let anyone out there fool you or call you a fake foodie. We love a good meal but sometimes we need to balance it out. Here’s my problem though, I mostly crave the sweeter things in life when I’m on a diet, and that is how Red mango came to be my perfect partner in crime. Diet or no diet – they give me my dose of yummy frozen yogurt when and how I want it! So I decided to substitute my work lunch one day with a Parfait from Red mango at their cute out door

outlet at the high street in Select CITYWALK! No sooner did I wonder why I didn’t make this leap of faith before. Layers of yummy Madagascar vanilla (their yogurt literally has specks of vanilla in it so you can taste the wonderful goodness!), blueberry compote, crunchy muesli, kiwis, banana slices, and then a bit of sin with white chocolate chips, and oreo cookie bits! A meal that makes you feel good and tastes good also? For everyone who thinks it’s too good to be true, I recommend you try out the mixed berry Parfait from Red mango!

KRISPY KREME PEACE-MAKER

ORIGINAL GLAZED

A bad fight with a good friend? Don’t fret – take a nap – for your mouth – with a pillowy soft original glazed doughnut from Krispy Kreme. When you’re in a bad mood, and trust me I’ve been there, these doughnuts are the way to go. No flavours, nothing fancy schmancy, just good old soul food. I ate about half a dozen before all the tissues were used up. And I couldn’t wait to have another 6! Bad fights with good friends rarely last. So what do you do when you make up? Celebrate with another half a dozen of these beauties!

COFFEE BEAN & TEA LEAF MORNIN’ ALARM

VANILA LATTE

I am one of those people who should not be spoken with either before 10 am or before I’ve had my cup of coffee, whichever comes first. So more than to my rescue, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf has rescued many people from the monster that I can be without my coffee, by giving me their deliciously warm, wake-up cup of Vanilla latte day after day! A warm smile, a steaming hot mug of coffee, and the same consistent vanilla flavor is what is up for grabs at this world known chain of coffee and tea! Give your brain an alert meter with an extra shot of coffee like I do and it is sure to carry you happily through the day!

MAMAGOTO

ULTIMATE COMFORT

CHIANG MAI TRAIN STATION NOODLES

I am a khow suey girl through and through. I need my dose every couple of weeks of this warm coconutty goodness filled broth! It’s simply my confort food! It will as no surprise to anyone, that Mamagoto is my go-to spot for a version of Khowsuey that no one else in this city is able to pull off! Mamagoto has managed to convert this usually warm thick broth into a curry like meal in a bowl. So every couple of weeks when the craving begins for khow suey, I find my way to tis quirky restaurant at Select CITYWALK!

7

A thick curry like broth, long eggy noodles, crunchy peanuts, crisp fried onion and garlic, and a squeeze of lemon to balance the richness, need comfort food ? Then this curry is simply a hug in a bowl!

L’OPERA MY FEEL-LUXE MANTRA

MACARONS

I don’t indulge very often. Maybe once a month, ok maybe a fortnight, ok I need something special to make me feel special every couple of days! So an easy peasy solution for an indulgent something is macarons from L’opera. Try a raspberry, or pistachio. Feeling adventurous? Go in for rose, or try my favorite the salted caramel. This crisp on the outside and gooey on the inside treat is sure to make you feel luxurious for a while!

FRESH ON THE MENU

Food connoisseur Sid Mathur lists the new mouth-watering holes at Select CITYWALK

YUM YUM CHA

Sid Mathur, Director Head - Food & Beverage Impresario Entertainment & Hospitality Pvt Ltd

Sid started his training as a restaurateur early on. He trained at some of the best culinary spots in Europe and New York from the only perspective that matters in a restaurant – the guest’s. His keen love for food began at a young age, thanks to well-travelled parents. He developed an appreciation for fine food, further honed by his childhood in London, which gave him huge exposure to Michelinstar restaurants and various cuisines. It also developed his palate. He learnt the nuances of hospitality from a ringside seat, which made him the perfect host he is today. He now oversees F&B for over 35 restaurants across 14 cities, and 9 brands.

94

Brought to you from the same team behind Yum Yum Tree, and slated to open by the end of September, I predict that this one will be a game changer. Do expect Sushi, do expect Dim Sum, maybe some origami, but without giving too much away, also expect Hot Pots and Mochi Ice Cream. The grand master of origami, Akira Yoshizawa said ‘I wished to fold the laws of nature, the dignity of life, and the expression of affection into my work.’ Hopefully YYC will follow suit whilst supplying these ‘little bundles of joy’, their tagline.

L’OPERA

Clearly the premier French Pastry & Bakery in the city, and perhaps the only people who can make you drool even when they talk about biscuits! Coming soon we will see (read: eat) France’s beloved Vanilla Diamant and Chocolate Diamant Sablés, plus the eggless Coffee Hazelnut and Chocolate-Lemon variants. P.S: You had me at Mille-Feuille.

PUNJAB GRILL

The state of Punjab has given us so much in terms of food, and also a farmhouse in the shape of the Burj Al Arab (true story)! There’s a reason why Punjab Grill has captured our hearts & stomachs, and are now opening in Singapore, Dubai & Bangkok. And that reason is great classic dishes with contemporary innovation. I’m looking forward to trying the Tawa Grilled Tiger Prawns & the Rabri

KRISPY KREME

There are food moments that leave you temporarily speechless, bite movements slow down, and the need to savour each morsel becomes key. That’s what happens when I have a Krispy Kreme doughnut with my coffee. Dreams can come true, and their new nutty chocolate flavour, combines chocolate, nuts and cake. Need I say more? The only negative - it finishes too quickly!

MAMAGOTO

Not needing much of introduction, Mamagoto has quickly become the go to place for fun Asian cuisine. I know it’s hard to fight the temptation of ordering your staple favourites (Rock Shrimp Tempura & Chicken Salad for me), but stand your ground. It’s time to bite into their new Mamabuns - Burgers & Subs with an Asian twist! I would recommend the Singapore University Canteen Burger (Chicken) & You’re So Miso Sub (Stir Fried Prawns).

WINTER UNWIND

From Mauritius’ palm-fringed beaches to a party-on-ice in New Zealand to Turkey’s stone walls and cave hotels here are the 7 most exciting winter escapes ATTRACTIONS DON’T MISS THE LE MORNE BRABANT, and the Le Morne Mountain, classified as a World Heritage Site. Next is the Black River Gorges. It is a national park stretching over 6,574 hectares of incredible native forest and wildlife. Look out for the Pink Pigeon. FOR THE MOST HEAVENLY BEACHES, make a trip to Iles Aux Cerfs. There, the picturepostcard blue lagoon will make you feel as if you just arrived on Treasure Island.

W

hether the cold, crisp air has you yearning for the tropics or strapping on skis, we’ve got a trip for you. Here are 7 winter escapes - from Mauritus’ sandy beaches to a party-onice in New Zealand to Turkey’s stone walls and cave hotels... All you have to do is book a flight, pack a swimsuit and get moving.

MAURITIUS This island is nothing but a slice of paradise. And it’s not just about cobalt-blue seas, white sandy beaches and luxury hotels. There are also historic destinations, geographic variations and almost limitless activities to distract you from the daily routine of the pool and the beach! But the most attractive is the warmth of its people and its food. For a slice of adventure, watch dolphins, walk with lions and cheetahs, go for a blue safari submarine, pilot your own underwater scooter either by yourself or as a couple to 3-4 m depth in full safety and enjoy the wholesome experience of travel with just one destination.

NEW ZEALAND Every town you visit and every turn you take in this sparsely populated country is jaw-droppingly beautiful. Its lakes, mountains and sea coasts will remind you of several Bollywood movies shot here. So be ready to say wow at every step. Filling the gaps between its quaint towns scattered across rolling browns and greens are sublime forests, mountains, lakes, beaches and fiords (corals) that have made this country one of the best hiking destinations.

ATTRACTIONS TAKE A WALK ALONG the Heaphy and Milford Tracks or just go on a lazy drive along its several scenic roads. There is actually a road called Scenic Drive in Auckland. MODERN KIWI CUISINE is one of the most experimental, with influences from across the globe, especially its seafood, thanks to the Pacific!

HONG KONG Hong Kong is one of the world’s most dynamic cities, offering unique experiences such as a view from the Peak, Star Ferry, tramways, bustling shopping areas, Hong Kong Disney World and the Ocean Park. Be a true traveller as you land; don’t laze around. Try the pungent beancurd, the shredded jellyfish, jostle with the crowds at the city centre and join in the dawn tai chi sessions. Try the bustling markets, from street vendors to luxury houses, and shop till you drop.

ATTRACTIONS OCEAN PARK Get up close and personal with your animal instincts at the marine-life theme park featuring animal exhibits, thrill rides and shows. Don’t miss out on the Polar adventure that lets you explore the North and the South poles and even meet king penguins. DISNEY WORLD This elaborate theme park is a fun paradise. Forget kids, even adults grow back in age here. And don’t forget to step into Madam Tussad’s Wax Museum to take pics with the celebrities.

DUBAI It’s a city that loves to show off: it has the tallest building in the world, an artificial island shaped like a palm tree, seven-star hotels, the largest global shopping mall, indoor snow slopes and a lake with swans in it in the middle of the desert! Dubai is a city of fantastical dreams-come-true: futuristic skyscrapers that never leave your sight, a glittering coastline and a desert city that is today dotted with lush green lawns and flower beds. While temperatures spiral outside, Dubai’s malls are the hotspots to shop, play, eat, drink (tea and coffee) and socialise. For traditional culture, visit the souqs, Bur Dubai being the most popular.

ATTRACTIONS DUBAI IS ALSO A FOODIE PARADISE. You should try the local Arabic delights and Mediterranean spreads. And if you want some gastronomical adventure, how about the stuffed camel? WHILE IN DUBAI, PLAN A TRIP TO Abu Dhabi. Don’t miss the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan Mosque, a magnificent sight.

ATTRACTIONS IF THERE IS ONE MUSTSEE IN BANGKOK, it’s the dazzling, spectacular Grand Palace, undoubtedly the city’s most famous landmark. LOCATED NORTHEAST OF PHUKET, Phang Nga Bay is a unique site in the world. A distinctive feature of Phang Nga Bay is the sheer limestone cliffs that jut vertically out of the emerald green water.

BANGKOK’S COLOURFUL FLOATING MARKETS are familiar to many. Even though transactions mainly involve tourists rather than locals these days, the floating market boats are still piled high with tropical fruit and vegetables, fresh, ready-to-drink coconut juice and local food cooked from floating kitchens located right on the boat.

102

THAILAND Thailand is for the prince and the pauper. With two long coastlines, Thailand is a fantastical tropical getaway. Try the gentle surf of Bang Saphan Yai, dive with whale sharks in Ko Tao, scale the sea cliffs of Krabi, learn to kiteboard in Hua Hin or regenerate at a health resort in Koh Samui.

A Buddhist nation, you are never too far from a prayer house in Thailand. Gleaming temples, known as wats, and golden Buddhas frame both the rural and the modern landscapes with exuberance. Don’t miss the 19-m high gilded statue of the seated Buddha in Wat Phanan Choeng, dating back to 1324.

September-October 2014 selectcitywalk.com

TURKEY If there could be a country with layers of history, it’s Turkey. Ottoman sultans used to live in Istanbul’s Topkapi Palace, centuries earlier, Byzantine Christians hid in Cappadocia’s caves, then the Hittites built Hattuşa’s stone walls on the

Anatolian steppe and Romans coursed down the Curetes Way at Ephesus (Efes). Look for historical references in Turkey from Julius Caesar, who famously ‘came, saw and conquered’ near Amasya.

ATTRACTIONS SPEND TIME DISCOVERING AYA SOFYA’S floating dome and kilims (carpets). Soak in a hamam, eat kebabs or visit ancient ruins. In Istanbul, you must take the Bosphorus cruise. For some peace, travel to the lessfrequented eastern quarters, that stand over the plains of ancient Mesopotamia.

ATTRACTIONS A MUST-SEE IS THE ALIMATHA ISLAND, located at the Vaavu Atoll on the eastern side of the Maldives. It is a complete Maldivian destination for tourists, as it offers world-class diving, aquarium-like snorkelling as well as a central beach complete with great facilities. IF YOU ARE BORED OF THE SUN AND SURF, visit the Hukuru Miskiiy, also known as the Old Friday Mosque. It is the oldest mosque that can be found on the island. Located at Male, the National Musuem of Maldives, the building houses a lot of different kinds of historical artefacts that reflect the history of the country.

THE MALDIVES The Maldives is the beach country, with almost one beach on each of its nearly 1,200 islands, and each one of them so consistently perfect, that one might even get bored! The next thing you find in abundance here is resorts: one for every pocket. The clear waters offer some of the best diving and snorkelling spots in the world. Look out for baby sharks, huge coral walls, magnificent caves and schools of brightly coloured tropical fish. You can even spot Manta rays, turtles,

104

friendly sharks and even the world’s largest fish, the whale shark. The best bit? The water is so warm many people don’t even wear a wetsuit. Since the highlights of the Maldives are its great waters and marine life, the Bluetribe Moofushi diving centre offers the best experience in terms of water sport activities such as windsurfing, diving, snorkelling, kayaking, riding on catamarans/pedal boats, and many more activities.
