Who in AAPI History Guided or Inspired You?
Honoring Oi Chun Zee, My Onya Submitted by Charlotte Zee | April 12, 1936 - May 16, 2021 In 1965, my grandparents arrived in New York City from Shanghai with their three sons in tow, with very little money in their pockets, and without knowing English. To get their bearings, my grandparents settled in Manhattan where they heard blue-collar jobs were plentiful. My Onya (grandma) worked in sweatshops and my Aiya (grandpa) was a waiter until my grandparents saved enough money to open a restaurant on 24th Street and 2nd Avenue. The restaurant was open 364 days a year, with Thanksgiving as the only day off. My grandparents built a community through the restaurant. They offered jobs to relatives and friends when they had a difficult time finding employment elsewhere. Once they hired a man who held a master’s degree in China, while no one in the US would take his credentials seriously. My dad and his brothers would call him Uncle, and he formed a strong bond with my grandparents, to whom he was grateful for allowing him to earn a living while others dismissed his foreign degree. My grandparents annually held a Chinese New Year’s feast with their restaurant staff, abundant with king crab legs and delicacies of the like. My grandpa gave the staff money for the holidays, and the annual dinner was a celebration of the employees’ dedication and teamwork, which was critical to the restaurant’s success.
My grandparents worked tirelessly in the restaurant for many years, until my Aiya suffered a debilitating stroke. While caring for my Aiya, my Onya raised my sister and me, as both my parents worked full-time jobs. She prepared homemade Chinese food for us on a silver-plated platter and delivered it to my sister and me every night, fostering our love of lobster and noodles early on. I’ll always be grateful for quality time with Onya when she lived one floor below us in our New York apartment building. Although my Onya has recently passed and my grandparents’ restaurant is now a Subway sandwich shop, my grandmother’s legacy is very much alive in my heart. In the face of adversity, my grandma persevered and succeeded, and in doing so, had the biggest heart and greatest sense of humor I had ever known. Onya, thank you for inspiring me to feel hopeful, especially in moments when it is easier to lose hope. The world is a better place because of your generosity, selflessness, and warmth. A Chinese proverb says, “all of life is a dream walking, all of death is a going home.” I am happy knowing you are at peace. Until we meet again.
