Can-Am Technology

1

6

The components in every Can-Am ATV make the most of our best-in-class power. Unbeatable performance comes from combining superior handling and technologies that maximize all that horsepower. We design these parts in conjunction with the engine, so everything works together to deliver the ultimate ride.

It’s a superior ride based on every part working together.

Visco-Lok † front differential

An industry-exclusive progressive auto-locking front differential 4x4 system that engages at any speed. It continuously monitors front-wheel speed. If one wheel spins faster than the other, Visco-Lok sends more power to the wheel that has better traction. The rider is not required to activate it. Most competitive differential systems are actually 3WD and require the rider to make complex manipulations to lock in 4WD.

SCRUB

competitors’ butterfly motion

tti vertical-only motion

visco-lok

Torsional trailing arm independent rear suspension (tti)

The only independent rear suspension that eliminates scrub and camber changes, meaning the wheels pivot up and down rather than in a butterfly motion like competitors’ systems. This ensures the vehicle only moves in the direction you point it. TTI also has up to 75 percent fewer moving parts than competitive systems, making it more durable and easier to maintain.

Tri-mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS)*

The DPS™ system offers three separate, selectable settings for variable steering assistance, which works in every mode. Precise control through less assistance at high speed. Easy maneuverability with more assistance at low speed. The rider can select how much assistance is needed based on preferences and terrain. It delivers less kickback and more feedback because of the 50:1 final gear ratio, the industry’s largest.

2

3

Air Control Suspension (ACS)**

The ACS system uses HPG shocks from FOX Racing Shox∞ and an onboard compressor to allow the rider to adjust the preload level of the suspension to his preference. Six preset levels are available and can be set on the fly. Plus, it includes a hose that can be used to fill tires – or inflate other items – while on the trail.

D.E.S.S. (Digitally Encoded Security System)

Outlander and Renegade models feature the exclusive D.E.S.S.™ anti-theft system. The ATV will not start unless a coded microchip in the key matches a code embedded in the engine control module. It means only you can start your vehicle.

Have we revolutionized ATVs? You tell us.

8

Introducing the revolutionary new Outlander and Renegade models. Years of research and development guided the Can-Am team in its efforts to develop these ATVs. We have extended our reign as the ATV performance leader with the introduction of our new 82-hp Rotax 1000 V-Twin engine. Reinventing the chassis has led to advancements in vehicle dynamics and the objective of furthering ride quality without sacrificing our performance heritage. Improved front and rear suspension geometries have shifted the handling paradigm so that it boosts the machine’s behavior and comfort while maintaining its sporty framework. The modern and robust appearance of the Outlander is supported by refined ergonomics and meaningful innovation that includes new, high-strength cargo racks, easy-access maintenance features, increased storage, relocated intakes and more. The result is a line of ATVs built with no compromises.

9

With the new Outlander and Renegade chassis, we didn’t just take ATVs to the next level. We created a whole new one.

introducing the all new chassis

Using Computer-Aided Vehicle Dynamics (CAVD) software, Can-Am engineers took an innovative approach to all aspects of the chassis in the new-generation Outlander and Renegade ATVs to challenge traditional thinking in the off-road world. The results are principles of design we call Geometric Contact Control. Unwanted vehicle behaviors, like dive under braking and over-steering when exiting corners under hard acceleration, are kept under control mostly by the way the pivot points are positioned in space instead of by stiffening shocks and springs. You can then keep a more compliant suspension calibration where all four wheels are kept in almost constant contact with the terrain. The result is superior sport performance, improved ride quality, comfort, traction, cornering and directional control.

1

2

Double-A arm front suspension with dive-control geometry

Standard geometry uses parallel A-arm attachment points that make the vehicle dive under braking. Stiffer suspension calibration is needed to reduce this vehicle behavior – which comes at the expense of comfort. The new Can-Am front suspension geometry position a-arm attachment points in a non-parallel configuration, preventing vehicle diving while at the same time allowing for optimum suspension calibration. The new geometry allows for better cornering and vehicle-braking dynamics, and anti-kickback for better steering feel. The 9 in. (229 mm) of suspension travel increase trail comfort and aggressive riding capability.

3

4

10

SST G2 frame: New from the ground up

The next generation and industry-exclusive Surrounding Spar Technology (SST G2) frame from Can-Am. The welded-steel frame incorporates new processes and updated geometry for increased structural integrity, improved durability and precision handling. The more efficient SST G2 design offers increased strength compared to a traditional tubular steel chassis, a lower center of gravity, better handling and requires far fewer components, materials and welds.

Torsional Trailing arm Independent rear suspension (TTI)

Inspired by trophy trucks, the reconfigured TTI rear suspension is unique to the ATV industry. We lowered the suspension pivot points to increase rear vehicle squat, allowing for better traction without compromising on suspension calibration for an optimal ride in all conditions. TTI remains the only independent rear suspension that eliminates scrub and camber changes, ensuring the vehicle keeps moving in a straight line when the suspension moves up and down. It works in conjunction with the SST G2 frame for the best sport performance without sacrificing ride quality. The rear suspension travel has been increased to 9.3 in. (236 mm), and it now features a new external sway bar.

214 mm disc brakes with twin-piston calipers

The new chassis features outboard hydraulic disc brakes using large 214 mm discs with twin-piston calipers for superior stopping power.

DS 450

34

With the DS 450, we found a new way to build a sport quad. Setting new standards for the industry, it features the first no-weld, all-aluminum frame, hollow rear axle and inverted brake calipers. It’s a machine ready to race with less unsprung weight, more mass centralization and, as you’ve come to expect from Can-Am, a better power-to-weight ratio. You demand performance from a sport quad. We invite you to ride it and tell us how we did.

1

R-type forged-aluminum double-A arm front suspension

2

R-type cast-aluminum swingarm rear suspension

3 4

The longest aluminum upper and lower A-arms for a 46-in. sport ATV. Also features a one-piece aluminum knuckle and short spindle for straight line braking and reduced kickback.

With a hollow rear axle, extended-reach aluminum wheel hubs, aluminum sprocket, cast-aluminum swingarm, 10.5 in. (267 mm) of travel and Kayaba∞ HPG piggyback shocks for the lowest possible unsprung weight and the most mass centralization.

ALTEC Twin pyramidal aluminum frame

This no-weld frame offers maximum strength. Major components are secured with aluminum fasteners called lock-bolts that make it stronger and also lighter than a traditional ladder frame.

Rotax 4-TEC® 449cc, 45.3-hp liquid-cooled engine The engine offering the largest bore (97 mm), the largest intake valves (38 mm), the largest throttle body (46 mm), a five-speed manual transmission and an almost-straight intake path. It breathes easily and can produce more power. The DS 450 delivers the best power-to-weight ratio.

Kayaba HPG aluminum piggyback front (C36) and rear (C40) shocks

With compression, rebound and preload adjustments. These high-performance shocks give riders the flexibility of tuning the suspension to fit the terrain and riding style.

Hollow rear axle

The hollow, high-strength steel axle has been shortened by extending the length of the aluminum hubs. This shorter axle, mated with “spider” all-aluminum hubs with precision-machined splines and longer arms, reduces the rear unsprung weight, which also significantly impacts mass centralization and dry weight.
