From The President

VOL. 98, No. 1 ISSN 0914-5785

The first two quarters of this Civitan year are almost behind us – which is hard to believe. The current Civitan year has brought MANY changes, maybe the most we have had in two decades as an organization.

PR and Communications Director Terry Schrimscher Contributing Writers Louis Stephens Terry Schrimscher Megan Mindel Jennifer Ely Meredith Binkley Nick Slater Scarlet Thompson

As with any type of change in leadership, we have learned many things, discovered several areas that are full of opportunities, and are implementing many new ideas. I am working hand in hand every day with Executive Vice President Scarlet Thompson and her team to make Civitan viable. We are moving in the right direction to sustain us into the next decade. Change is never an easy thing in life. I think it’s third in fears after death and taxes…

Kendyl Massey

International President 2017-18

The changes that are being made at headquarters related to staffing models, financial savings, new reporting in some cases, and changes coming at the International Convention. They are all being put into place for the health and financial stability of Civitan. We are truly focused on the “bang for the buck” and ensuring that everything we do for fundraising has a focus on the dollars to the cause. I know from my travels that many of you are very supportive of this endeavor and know it will be “different” but different is sometimes better. We are ensuring we will be more transparent on all things financial. I take the responsibility of being a good steward of the funds we receive across the entire organization very seriously. Members have asked during my visits if this presidential year is as I had thought it would be. My answer is in some ways “yes” and in some ways more different than I could have ever imagined. Our members are the heart & soul of our organization. You make everything we do possible!

United States 1917

You all renew my spirit that there is much goodness in the world! In order to be around as a service organization we must change and adapt to what will attract new folks who are potential new members. To date the membership is at a loss which is not as I had hoped it would be at this point. I believe that with hard work anything is possible! If you all will step up with me to share & grow Civitan I know we can end this year positive in growth! Who’s with me?

From the Editor Welcome to the Second Century! It's hard to believe Civitan is approaching its 101st birthday this March. A lot has changed in the world during the first century of service but the mission of Civitan is still as important as it was in 1917. In this edition of Civitan Magazine, we have made it a goal to share stories rooted in our purpose as an organization. Civitan is a network of local clubs meeting local needs. We have one common bond—service to others. Our cover story showcases a project that was several years in the making. Civitan Smiles Park at Kiroli Park fits perfectly with our mission to serve people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD). The idea of an inclusive park sponsored by Civitan should be a point of pride for each of us and the story deserves the spotlight. Another, more bittersweet, story came to us during our centennial year. Dr. Ila Wells shared her unique perspective of her Civitan experience with us. Born the year before Civitan was founded, she passed away at the age of 101 shortly after telling her story to Civitan Magazine. Civitan headquarters has gained a few new faces in the last year. In this issue, some of our newest staff members contribute with motivational messages for recruitment, fundraising and fellowship. Here's to a great second century of service. Thanks for doing what you do,

Terry Schrimscher

Update on Legal Issues and Your Club By Scarlet Thompson We can’t all be legal beagles when it comes to knowing exactly what to do when it comes to filing the right forms or following the right procedures. We at Civitan International know you are keeping up with a lot on behalf of you club, so we’re here to make that all easier. We recently had a great opportunity to use a new and highly respected attorney to review how we’ve been advising you and proceeding with other measures related to legally protecting us all as Civitans. That counsel has guided us to change a few things and change a few ways in which we are guiding you and your club. One is filing your club’s 990. We’ve put together some new information that takes you through the steps you need to take to ensure your club is following IRS rules. It’s all on civitan.org. Click on “Member Resource Center,” then click “Civitan Resources,” and finally click on “Club Leadership and Administration.” You’ll find the IRS Filing Information there. We’ll also be including that information in geographical training this year. Another area where we get a lot of questions is the use of International’s 501(c)3 status. For the record, we are not currently working on getting clubs this status, nor have we for several years. Apparently we did make a valiant effort to do this before 2010 and were rejected at that time. So, considering our clubs are generally 501(c)4s, we get a lot of requests to use International’s 501(c)3 status. We have recently put a new process in play for this kind of request. Remember, the only way you can borrow our status legally is by donating the gifts you received back out to another (c)3. Any misuse of our status could lead to it being revoked by the IRS. This would cause great harm to the organization. For more on this process, please reach out to Jenny Ely, our Director of Donor Relations and Strategy, by emailing her at jenny@civitan.org.

What it means to have a Servant's Heart In February of this year, Civitan announced a new service initiative designed to help clubs honor outstanding teachers, therapists, paraprofessionals, social workers, mentors or others working with individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD). The Servant's Heart Award is the first new program introduced by Civitan in its second century of service. "Special education classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, in-school therapists, and vocational trainers could all be recognized under the project. These unsung heroes deserve this opportunity so much for the lives they are changing on a daily basis," said Scarlet Thompson, Executive Vice President of Civitan International. "I am thankful to the board for coming up with this idea so we can honor these educators in communities across the globe. This project not only recognizes some incredible people, but it also gives clubs the opportunity to gain awareness and start new relationships." Civitan hopes clubs will begin presenting the award as early as April to coincide with Civitan Awareness Month but timing is not critical. Clubs can set their own schedule for honoring recipients in each community. Participation in the Servant's Heart Award is voluntary for clubs but many club leaders have expressed an interest in learning more. To assist clubs, Civitan has developed the Servant's Heart Award tool kit, which is available online. The kit contains downloadable logos, posters, certificates, and other press material which can be customized easily. "We hope this will be the first of many ready-made toolkits we’ll debut throughout the coming year. At world headquarters, our plan is to make sure clubs have what they need to succeed and make a difference," said Thompson. For more information on the Servant's Heart Awards, visit civitan.org/servants-heart-award.

If you have any questions or concerns on behalf of your club that are legal or IRS focused, please reach out to me or Laura Sappington, Director of Finance and Operations. Thanks for your understanding of these matters so we can all ensure a future that is protected for Civitans everywhere.

5 Hot Topics in Membership By Meredith Binkley The Recruitment and Support Team is working hard to serve you and your clubs to the best of our ability. Check out five things that we’re focusing on this year as we look to take Civitan in to our 101st century of service! 1. What is Your Why? Everyone was motivated to join Civitan by something. Was it because you have a family member or friend affected by I/DD? Maybe it was because someone asked you to? Remember that “why” and let that be the driving force behind everything you do. 2. Intentional Recruiting When we recruit new members, we want to be intentional in who we are seeking out. Don’t recruit just for numbers sake, but look for people who have a heart for service and for individuals affected by I/DD. They’ll be invested, and in turn more likely to stay in your club long term, which will allow your group to have a stronger impact on your community. 3. Club Building We’ve only had four clubs built this fiscal year. Is there a need where you live that is not being met? Consider building a club to bridge that gap and serve! 4. Civitan International Research Center We are excited about our continued partnership with the CIRC in Birmingham, Alabama. Did you know that they are currently researching to find a cure for many disorders, among which are autism, Rett’s syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease, PTSD? 5. Cause Focused We are renewing our efforts to continue to be a cause-first organization. Our flagship project, the CIRC, serves families and individuals affected by I/DD. We challenge each club to host an event every year that raises money to go directly back to the CIRC and their research efforts.

By Louis Stephens Civitan’s Member Sponsorship program recognizes Civitans who excel at recruiting new Civitans. Any Civitan distinguished in this way receives a Member Sponsorship Team (MST) pin. There are two ways a member can earn this honor: • By sponsoring four or more members in the previous fiscal year.

Civitan’s

• By sponsoring 50 or more members in total – Civitans who achieve this goal are given life-member status as a MST. If you earn MST status by sponsoring four or more members during the fiscal year, you maintain that status for the following fiscal year. To remain on the MST Honor Roll you must sponsor four or more members during the current fiscal year. Civitan members recognized on the Distinguished Sponsorship Team (DST) have sponsored a minimum of 150 members. DST is a very prestigious symbol to appear after a Civitan’s name. Currently there are 15 members who are on the DST honor roll. Civitans recognized on the Executive Sponsorship Team (EST) have sponsored 300 or more members. Currently there are 3 members who are on the EST honor roll.

The initials MST, DST or EST appear after a member’s name on Civitan International recognition lists, etc. Each Civitan who sponsors four or more members receives a MST pin stamped with the year he or she qualifies. 100 members earned this pin last fiscal year. Each lifetime MST member earns a MST pin showing the recruitment level he or she earned. Each person qualified as a DST or EST receives a DST or EST pin. We want you to be a part of our super recruiter team by sponsoring people into Civitan. Set a goal to sponsor one member per quarter this year. Then, the next time you see the initials MST appear after someone’s name, it will be yours. Share your volunteer successes with people around you and sponsor them into your Civitan club. Earn your 2017-18 MST Pin!

A Life of Service Former Governor Dr. Ila Wells Shared Her Civitan Experience Dr. Ila Wells lived a full life before she ever came to Civitan at the age of 73. Born in 1916, she was almost a year older than Civitan—at age 101—when she sat down to speak to Civitan Magazine over lunch in Bolivar, Tennessee last September. Dr. Wells earned her first degree in 1936 and began her teaching career in a segregated school system upon graduation. Her desire to learn, and shape minds, never went away and she returned to school to earn a Master’s degree in 1953. Later, she became the first African-American to earn a doctorate at Northern Illinois University. She joined the staff of Mississippi Valley State University, teaching English, and retired after a 48 year career in 1985. Shortly after retirement, she joined Civitan and returned to teaching. She spent another 16 years on staff at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi. When she joined the Bolivar Civitan Club in her

Dr. Wells lists her visit to Civitan headquarters with Valley District as one of her favorite experiences as governor. The disctrict chartered buses to bring as many members as possible to meet the Civitan staff.

hometown, she became a regular at the 6 a.m. breakfast meetings before commuting to her job nearly 50 miles away. “I got a couple of tickets back then,” she said with a grin her friends knew all too well. When asked what attracted her to Civitan at that point in life she added that Civitan was a great organization and she wanted to serve others. Dr. Wells didn’t just attend meetings, she assumed a leadership role quickly. She ran for club president and led a service project to refurbish a building for the Literacy Council. She earned the Certified Club Builder

designation for building the Middleton Civitan Club. She served as Valley District Governor in 1997-1998. Long-time friend and Bolivar Club member Rachel Weir told the story of a Civitan Cruise where the always proper Dr. Wells accidentally sent her luggage ahead before setting out her clothes. The only clothing the crew could round up for her was a triple extra-large jumpsuit from the maintenance team. She wrapped it around herself and wore it for the entire trip home. Dr. Wells laughed at the story but was quick to add she never liked anyone telling her she couldn’t do something. She attributed that attitude to her success in life and her accomplishments as a Civitan. “She also believed in being well put together,” added LaWanda Beasley. “The night before I was to receive my Masters, I went to her on how to wear my stole on my robe.” Dr. Wells recruited Beasley to Civitan where she later served as a leader at the club and district levels. “Being an English professor, she could be the grammar police. She was very helpful if there was something I needed proofing,” added Beasley. When asked what she could share from her teaching experience to help recruit the next generation of Civitans Dr. Wells answered with one word: “love.” Love for serving others led her to Civitan and, she added, it was what would bring new members to us today. Dr. Wells was honored as a Civitan Fellow in 1998. Sadly, she passed away in November after an accident in her home. She was an active member of her beloved club until the end. C

By Terry Schrimscher ivitans take pride in the rich history of the organization. Members like to think of Civitan as one of the “big four” among service organizations along with Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions. So, when members visited Kiroli Park, in West Monroe, Louisiana, something was missing. Kiroli’s name stems from the first two letters of the other three service organizations who bought the land in 1925 as a gift to the Boy Scouts. The idea for the playground began at the Ark-La-Miss Fair, which has been a fundraising project for the West Monroe Civitan Club for 30 years, explained club past-president, Matt West. “Each year they have opened the Fair for one day exclusively to children and adults with disabilities to come enjoy the festivities for free.” West said. “A little over 7 years ago several of the Civitan Club members were looking around during this time and someone said, ‘Would you look at the smiles on all of those faces.’ Hence the name Smiles Park. Another said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could give them something to enjoy everyday instead of this one day?’ Then one said, ‘Why don’t we build a playground?” The popular park already featured tennis courts, hiking trails, gardens, and fishing ponds when local Civitan members approached the city about building an inclusive playground on the property. Local leaders got behind the project and helped the club find the perfect spot in the existing park. The club hosted a planning session with local therapists, educators and families and asked them all for input.

“The children were asked to dream of anything they would want in a playground and to draw it the best they could.” West said. The club worked with a company called Shane’s Inspiration who helped them design the park, pick a theme, and plan a budget based on the dreams of the children. West Monroe Civitan members took the lead in fundraising for the project, which cost more than $1 million when finished, and the Civitan International SMILES Park opened in the summer of 2017. The fair-themed park features a Zip Krooz, teeter-totters, a sensory animal circle, and other playground equipment that is accessible to children with disabilities. Since the park opened, the travel website TripAdvisor.com has listed it as the #1 attraction in West Monroe. The success of the park has given Civitan a lot of recognition in the community and sparked more growth in the park. West Monroe Civitan has already worked with developers on another playground for younger children elsewhere in the park. West says he expects attendance to top more than 250,000 people this year. " Maybe one day, inclusive playgrounds will simply be known as just playgrounds," he added. To learn more about Civitan SMILES Park at Kiroli, visit @civitansmiles on Facebook.

Lynn Leitch Chesapeake District Junior Governor becomes District Governor Lynn Leitch, far left, serving dinner at the Hope Lodge in Birmingham with fellow governors Erma Kuboushek and Bonnie Tarrant.

Lynn Leitch will once again make Chesapeake District history during the 2017-2018 Civitan year. She will become the first Junior Governor to serve as District Governor. Since the time they started keeping records in 1976, she will also be the youngest Governor for this district.

and Director in the Fairfax Civitan Club and as Chaplain for the district. In 2002-2003, Lynn took the office of Club President for the Fairfax Civitan Club. She made a little bit of Chesapeake District history, becoming the youngest Club President for the District at the age of 22.

Lynn was a member of Junior Civitan from 6th grade until she graduated from Potomac Senior High School in 1999. She was celebrated every year for various accomplishments. For example, Most Service Hours, Outstanding Club President, Junior Civitan of the Year, and Outstanding Female of the Year for three years, along with the District Honor Key for two of those. Lynn was given the District Honor Key for her outstanding performance as Junior Governor in 1997-1998 as well as the Civitan International Junior Foundation Fellow. Lynn received various recognitions from Prince William County and various businesses, as well.

Lynn graduated from George Mason University in 2004, and needed to start looking for a permanent job. She vied for a position with the Fairfax County Government. Lynn believed that her time in Civitan helped to move her into this position. She started as a temp to hire for two years and then was hired as a County of Fairfax employee. Five years later, her boss retired and she was encouraged to post for this position, since she was in charge of the department. Lynn works for the Department of Family Services, and runs the Bridges to Success Program. This program helps those with hidden disabilities and works with them to determine what the disability is, to get them connected to the right doctors and the right medication if needed. Additionally, they help the individual with resume writing and job interviewing skills as well as locating jobs and becoming self-sufficient.

During her year as Junior Governor, Lynn wanted to raise as much money as possible for the Civitan International Research Center. She wanted to help fund important research for Alzheimer’s since her grandfather, Charles Brice, passed away fighting this disease. With the support of her family, friends, people with the adult Civitan Clubs – like John Cain, Ben Dodge, Whit Mallory, Anne Krome and Maribeth Jacobs, Bev and Chip Hill and many more – Lynn raised over $8,000.00 in all. Once Lynn graduated high school, she had to wait until she was 18 before she could join the Fairfax Civitan Club. In early 2000, she did join while she attended George Mason University. She has served as Club Historian

Lynn enjoys various meetings and conventions at the District level, and has attended them all since she was Junior Governor. Also she has attended all the International Conventions but two. Along the way, she has been supported by friends she made as a part of being in the Civitan program. Thank you, Lynn, for your service!

Volunteer to Live Longer That good feeling you get after donating to a cause or working on a service project is more than just an emotion. According to recent studies by BioMed Central Public Health, volunteering for a cause you believe in can actually increase your health and your lifespan. Giving can reduce feelings of depression, according to the study, and doing a physical activity— like a club service project—can benefit participants mentally and physically. Scientists believe the physical activity is good exercise but also say the social interaction of working on projects with other people lowers your risks of high blood pressure, heart attack, strokes and dementia. Census statistics indicate 25% of Americans volunteer for service work. Numbers in Europe and Asia are similar. Worldwide, women are slightly more likely to volunteer time and service than men but studies show those numbers are closer than recent years. When you are talking to your next potential club member, you can add health as another reason to join Civitan.

Camp Big Heart Brings Big Smiles to Children in Georgia By Nick Slater CBH Civitan Club

Camp Big Heart (CBH) is a boarding summer camp founded in 1984 by Georgia Civitans and annually supported by the Civitan Clubs of Georgia. We offer a broad range of recreational activities to children and adults with mild to moderate developmental disabilities (ages 7 to 60). CBH is centrally-located in Georgia near Fort Valley and serves families from across the state. The single best part of CBH is the friendships that are formed. We are blessed with high retention of both campers and staff, so each summer feels like a homecoming for all involved. CBH also provides a needed break for the families of our campers – many of whom never before stayed overnight away from home before our camp! In addition to typical summer camp activities, CBH also has fun events such as a carnival, talent show, a camp dance, and live entertainment! We offer a first-rate camping experience at an affordable cost ($425 for a Sunday-Friday camp). Furthermore, our families can rest easy that their camper is in good hands with our 24-hour security and medical staff. For 2018, our dates are June 17th 22nd for school age and young adults and June 24th – 29th for adults. We are now accepting applications online at www.campbigheart.org! We rely on Civitan clubs and our generous donors to keep the cost of camp down for our families. Please help us to spread the word to potential campers & families.
