A Simple Sandwich Goes a Long Way

Mobile, AL -- On Monday, September 18th, members of the Cottage Hill Junior Civitan Club purchased, prepared, and served lunch for guest families of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mobile. RMHC Mobile serves as a place to stay for families who have a child recieving treatment at the nearby University of South Alabama Women’s and Children’s Hospital. This service is provided to these families for free of charge throughout the duration of their stay in Mobile. Twenty-four Junior Civitans gathered at the House and split responsibilities between preparing the meal (sandwiches with condiments, fruit trays, vegetables, and potato salad), cleaning the kitchen, writing notes to the families, and setting the meal out for guests to enjoy at their convenience. After the two hour project, the club members noticed the guest families and staff were all so appreciative of their hard work and generosity as it saved the families time and money allowing them to focus on their child’s health. The club was touched to later receive two letters expressing their appreciation from the staff of RMHC Mobile. Thank you, Cottage Hill Junior Civitan Club and advisors Tracy Ewing and Heather Colson for organizing this WONDERFUL service project for families in need. Are you interested in giving back to your community in a way similar to the Cottage Hill Club? 2017 INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION By Hadden Fulgham

International President 2017-18

Saturday June 24, 2017, is a day that will go down in the Civitan and Junior Civitan history books. This day marked the beginning of the first ever joint Civitan and Junior Civitan International conventions in our hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Civitans and Junior Civitans alike converged on the beautiful property of the Sheraton hotel to begin our action-packed and unforgettable extended weekend of service, fellowship and all around good times. The “Magic City” did not disappoint and the atmosphere surrounding the convention was nothing less than amazing. Our convention started with a joint opening ceremony with the Civitans where all international officers and governors were introduced. We enjoyed a performance from the award winning a capella group, VOX, as well as an intriguing show by Magician Arthur Atsma. The ceremonies were wrapped up with the presentation of our Shropshire Scholarship winners’ ceremonial checks. Following the opening ceremonies, Junior Civitans showed their best Dr. Seuss costumes and danced the night away at the Dr. Seuss themed dance. Sunday’s schedule included the annual Meet the Candidates Luncheon where Junior Civitans got to meet their 2017-2018 International Board candidates, hear their platforms, and ask them questions. Sunday afternoon was the Civitan Rocks the Block celebration. Junior Civitans and Civitans gathered at Uptown Park and enjoyed carnival games and a variety of food trucks, but most importantly, fellowship with old and new friends. The night ended back at the hotel with a Dr. Seuss themed scavenger hunt. Monday was the day that everyone waited for, but hated to see it come because we knew it was our last day together. It started with the Business Session, where the 2017-2018 Junior Civitan International Board members were elected and appointed. Congratulations to my fellow board members, Isabella Romano, Anushé Ashraf, Aaron Kendall, and Molly Zuidema, as well as Chairs Representative Penny Bonawitz and Civitan Board Representative Barbara Holyfield. The Philanthropy Session was up next and we got to relive some Sno-Do and Dance-a-thon moments from the past year. The Junior Fellows and Research Center Fellows were also presented; a huge congratulations to all who were honored this year! We enjoyed a free afternoon before heading to the final event of the convention, the Installation and Closing Banquet. The 2017-2018 International Board was introduced and installed by 2016-2017 Junior Civitan International President Cambron Bice and then Civitan International President-Elect Kendyl Massey. The banquet concluded with recognition of our 2016-2017 international award winners. Congratulations to another round of successful Junior Civitans, districts, and clubs! The night ended with the closing dance and hard and heartfelt goodbyes. When Tuesday morning rolled around, it was time to say goodbye to our old and newfound friends and begin the journey home. If you missed this convention, don’t worry! There is always next year’s! Make plans to attend now. I can promise you won’t regret it. Remember to always remain “Obseussed with Service!” Yours in Civitan,

Hadden Fulgham

Recruit ment

By Aaron Kendall International Director

Fall is a busy season for high schoolers. School just started back, and Friday night football is in full swing. In addition to the other exctiting things the season brings, it is also an extremely important time for Junior Civitans. Fall is the PERFECT time to make your clubs bigger and engage in more service projects. Why not spread the word about Junior Civitan around your school?! People need to know about our great organization and since many students are interested in joining new clubs, make sure they know about Junior Civitan! Here are a couple of ideas:

REMEMBER: While fall is a great time to recruit, don’t forget recruitment doesn’t end when the last leaf hits the ground! It is an ongoing project you can promote all year-long. Tag us on social media or email juniorcivitan@ civitan.org to let us know what you’re doing to recruit new members! Your international board is looking forward to seeing many clubs grow in number of members this year!

ONE Set up a booth at your school’s open house or parent night. Make pamphlets and/or a poster board so students and parents alike can easily learn more about the club.

T WO Plan a trial meeting for potential new members. Invite interested students to one of your meetings so they can “test the waters” with your club. Be sure to have snacks, games, a speaker, or just something to keep them interested and engaged. THREE If you have Junior Civitan shirts, encourage all your club members to wear them at school to help spread the word about your club! FOUR Talk to your advisor and/or principal and see if you can organize a school-wide assembly for all school clubs to recruit new members. This would give Junior Civitan the opportunity to talk to all students at the same time and promote the club in a huge way!

WORLD JUNIOR CIVITAN DAY By Isabella Romano, International VP and Anushé Ashraf, International Director

Do you know what THIS SATURDAY October 28th is? It’s World Junior Civitan Day! This is a day held every October to kick start events for the year. It is a great opportunity to recruit new members, get closer to old members, and serve your community all in the name of Civitan! Whether you’re simply having a club meeting or doing something involving your whole city, we would love to hear about all the great things your clubs are doing. We want to recognize and acknowledge your great acts. If your club still needs a project, check out some of our ideas:

• • • • • • • • • • • •

Conduct a sporting event to be played with people with disabilities Build a house with Habitat for Humanity Read to children at your local library or hospital Make and distribute a meal at a homeless shelter Clean up a local park or your school Have a bake sale to benefit the Civitan International Research Center Create and send cards to soldiers overseas Tutor children in your community Make birthday cards for children and teens in foster homes/orphanages Initiate a toy drive for children in need Volunteer with companies that help people with disabilities Create artwork to be hung in senior homes

You can report through the online service form, text your liaison, or even post on the “Junior Civitans Around the World” Facebook page. We look forward to seeing what good works our Junior Civitans participate in this Saturday!

COLLECTION SELECTION By Anushé Ashraf International Director

One of the most rewarding and exciting campaign projects is approaching, Collection Selection. Collection Selection is such a fun and easy project to conduct with your club because it contains a wide variety of options. Though typically conducted in the months of November and December, your Collection Selection campaign can happen during any time of the year. This year your international board has made a goal to increase participation and reporting of the campaign to 35%! In order to achieve this goal we need all the clubs to participate in Collection Selection, whether it be collecting clothes for a homeless shelter, books for local libraries, stuffed animals for children in hospitals, etc. Reporting is now easier than ever, because you can do it online. All you have to do is go to www.juniorcivitan.org, click Junior Civitan resources, literature and forms, club literature, scroll down to project materials, click the first hyperlink, and fill out the form. Start planning a Collection Selection project within your club! We look forward to seeing all the good work Junior Civitans do around the world.

Fundraising

By Molly Zuidema, International Director

When it comes to fundraising for any event, the first thing you need to keep in mind is what you are fundraising for and why YOU are doing it. You can ask people and businesses for money day after day, but it takes more than an open hand to get the correct attention. In order to optimize your fundraising abilities, always remember to utilize the POW fundraising tips!

Personalized Organized Wide Spread

You first need to make sure any letters or notes that you send are personalized to the recipient. Sending communications such as this are not about asking for money. They are about telling the person or business what you are raising money for and the details of what you do in the organization. The first two thirds of the letter should include nothing about asking for money, rather, it should describe what Junior Civitan is, what you do for it, and how this money being raised has an impact on the world. Once you have done this, don’t just ask for the money to be sent to you. You will seem much more approachable and personable if you instead offer to come meet with them to talk about this opportunity. Secondly, throughout all that you do, you need to stay organized. That means keeping up with international literature that has been provided to you, as well as your own personal system. It is important you keep a copy of all your letters, paired with the address and recipient information, so that when you hear back it is easy to keep track of everything. Lastly, there is never too much fundraising. Sending letters to every business or corporation in town is a great way to kick start any campaign. Even if you haven’t made contact with them before, your letter should be personal enough that they feel open and welcomed to discussing your cause further with you. www.juniorcivitan.org

President’s Message Hello Junior Civitans! I hope you are as excited about this year as I am. I have no doubt we are going to have an amazing year and show just how “Obseussed with Service” we really are. In early August, your 2017-2018 International Board met in Birmingham for our first board meeting, where we decided our major focuses this year would be increased communication and strength in our numbers. We don’t want to just focus on increasing our numbers, we want to focus on the impact you are making in your communities and how you are making the world a better place! We are so excited to work with members of the Junior Civitan organization this year and take this organization to heights that have never been reached. We hope you join in our excitement!
