EARLY CHILDHOOD

Dear Friends, Fall is the time to get fit and healthy here at the Cross Island YMCA! No matter who you are or where you come from or what your interests are, we are the spot for all your health and fitness, child care, swimming, and community needs. There are many new and exciting programs for all ages. As you look through the pages you will see N E W the new icon next to our new programs such as our new Family Zone, Jewelry Design 101 for youth, Teens take the City - this gives teens knowledge on how to become active in our community, Adult Basketball League and Express S.T.S which combines 15 minutes of Spinning, 15 minutes of Toning, and ends with 15 minutes of Stretching. We are also happy to offer additional music classes for teens and adults such as Choir and Musical Theater and String Ensemble, and Adult Guitar. Plus, we are welcoming back a full course selection of our computer classes in a newly made over room. I hope you enjoy your experience with us, and I welcome your feedback at any time. My door is always open for your questions, comments, or just to say hello! You belong at the Cross Island YMCA, and we are excited to share our Fall with you.

FACILITY DIRECTORY MEMBERSHIP & ENHANCEMENTS FAMILY PROGRAMS EARLY CHILDHOOD YOUTH PROGRAMS

OUR HISTORY The YMCA of Greater New York was established in 1852, and formed in 1853 by a special act of the New York State Legislature to serve young men as they moved to New York City. The YMCA was their safe haven for lodging, recreation, social activities and spiritual growth. It is the second oldest and the largest YMCA association in the United States. Over the years, the YMCA of Greater New York has grown tremendously to encompass 19 YMCA Branches, 200 program sites throughout the five boroughs, three camps and one conference center upstate. It is part of a World Alliance of YMCAs in 130 countries. For many years we have welcomed and served men, women, boys and girls of all ages, races, religions and socio-economic backgrounds. Our proud heritage is expressed in our mission statement. We welcome and support children and families, and through your membership dues and generous contributions, we develop programs that help build the values of Respect, Responsibility, Caring and Honesty. When you join the Cross Island YMCA, you become part of a caring community. Join today! Located in Bellerose, Queens just minutes from Nassau County and Manhattan, the Cross Island YMCA (formerly the Eastern Queens YMCA) has been serving the Eastern Queens community since 1955 through a small program office. In 1966 the Cross Island YMCA facility, which included a swimming pool and full gymnasium, was built. It was expanded in 1986 to add a barrier-free swimming pool and wing. A major facility expansion to address the growing needs of the community is planned for the near future. Cross Island YMCA has friendly and courteous staff, committed to providing excellent service while making your membership an enjoyable experience. This brochure will help you get acquainted with everything the YMCA has to offer through your membership. You've taken the first step toward a healthy spirit, mind and body. Our first priority is to see that you feel at home - welcome to the YMCA!

YOUTH SPORTS The Cross Island YMCA believes that youth sports programs encourage and promote healthy and strong kids, families and communities by placing a priority on family involvement, healthy competition rather than rivalry, the value of participation over winning, team building as well as individual development, a positive self-image and a sense of fair play and mutual respect for others. Six core values are incorporated into every sport---respect, responsiblity, caring, honesty, teamwork and sportsmanship. Contact Nicole Wright, Teen & Sports Coordinator for more information at 718-551-9336 or email nwright@ymcanyc.org.

STRONG KIDS CARD The YMCA Strong Kids Card is part of the YMCA of Greater New York’s commitment to improving the health and fitness of New York City’s kids age 5-17.

TEEN PROGRAMS

Every YMCA branch in New York City is reaching out to kids in their neighborhood programs to enroll them in the YMCA Strong Kids Card initiative. To register your child for a free YMCA Strong Kids Card, simply pick up a brochure at the membership desk, fill it out, and send it with your child to their YMCA program. Then we’ll take their picture and print their very own Strong Kids Card. They’ll use their card to access their local YMCA during designated days and times of the Strong Kids Card activities.

Cross Island YMCA Strong Kids Campaign Support Childhood in Our Community! The Strong Kids Campaign raises money for youth and family programs and scholarships at the Cross Island YMCA. The scholarships allow young people and families in financial need to participate in our early childhood and teen programs, after-school activities and summer camp. Additionally, programs such as our Second Grade Swim, Youth & Government, Leader’s Club and Teen Center benefit from donations to the Strong Kids Campaign. One-hundred percent of what we raise helps the families of our community.

Dedicated Volunteers Needed! Your help will guarantee that we keep our promise: that no one is ever turned away from our YMCA, regardless of her/his financial situation. By volunteering for our Strong Kids Campaign, you’ll guarantee that we raise the funds needed to provide scholarships and programs for the kids and families of our community. Although we except donations year round, our Campaign runs in February, March and April. We are holding training sessions for all volunteers in December and January. The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign has made it even easier to make a donation. Simply go to www.ymcastrongkids.org/nyc and click on “Cross Island YMCAâ€? or send us the enclosed envelope. For more information about this campaign, to volunteer, or to make a donation, please contact JamĂŠ Cohn at 718-551-9314 or jcohn@ymcanyc.org. On behalf of our kids and families, thank you.

Youth and Government is a national YMCA program that allows teens to increase their knowledge of our democratic system. In this program, teens will learn about legislature (how a bill becomes a law), justice (how laws are legally supposed to protect us), lobbying (the role we play in which bills become laws), and the role of the media (newspapers, television, magazines, etc.) in our government. Try your hand at writing your own bill, taking it to our State Capital, and passing it into a law at the New York State Youth and Government Conference in March, 2010.

Teen Tutoring (Ages 13 - 18 years) Are you having difficulty passing exams? Are you having trouble focusing in class? Are you in need of homework help? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, peer mentoring may be your solution. This program allows qualified teens to tutor their peers in all subjects.
