We were Freshies, five classes strong, enthusiastic, willing. A thrilling football season with six wins and three losses, city champs in Basketball, the Minstr:el "Fun and Frolics," open house going to school' by night are among our Freshman memories. 1945-46
Sophomores, the Eagle football and basketball teams were in there for the city championship, the thriller at Piqua will long be remembered : We participated in the Minstrel - "Moonlight Frolics," we liked the '46 Eagle, a real treat. Some of us attended the huge Junior-Senior Prom at Lakeside. We became part of Chaminade. 1946-41
Juniors ... we took Chemistry, Bookkeeping, studies became the center of interest as we worked hard in the upperclass division of Chaminade. City champs in Football, a fair showing on the hardwood, a prom we planned and put over, and a beautiful new Eagle '41 made this year tops!

These are the men who accomplish their goals, working not merely for themselves, but for the honor and success of their school and classmates.
Inspiring marches, spirited melodies, brilliant maneuvers, these are all part of the Chaminade band. The band provides the music for many school activities and perhaps the most important are the pep rallies and sports exhibitions. Rallies, football and basketball games, and band concerts are but a few of the performances given by the band during the year. The band provided the music for the tri-school "East" rally held before the first annual "East-West" game. Seniors, Juniors, Sophs, 路 and Freshies help make up the band, all are clarions, calling by means of their musical endeavors, loyal men of Chaminade 'neath the green and white banner.

Management of student affairs, this is the work of the Student Council. It provides the opportunity for every student to voice an opinion or suggestion that concerns or may improve school life. Various activities line the council's year long calendar, the Christmas dance and oratorical contest oeing two of the. more important. A big awards day rally held at the end of the school year is also sponsored by the student council. The council strives to promote unity within the school and backs every activity that it thinks will benefit the student.

Creating school spmt with their rallies, pep assemblies, posters and slogans, the working initiative of the booster club is recognized all around the school. Largely responsible for the spint that prompted the Eagle teams to victory, the boosters originated mirthful as well as serious pep rallies prior to every game. Bringing to Chaminade a new a~d modern fonn of education is the task of the Projector Club. To a few accredited students the responsibility of handling and maintaining delicate equipment is more than a sideline. From their booth at the rear of the assembly hall the projectors bring to the student an 'opp'o rtunity for both knowledge and entertainment. They willingly give their time and efforts to their fellow students. Scientific, historical, religious and social movies are but a few that are viewed by the $tudent through the efforts of the projector club. Father Carlen, S.M., advises the organization.

We salute the Camera Club whose busy members are resp'o nsible for many of the pictures in the "News" and this yearbook. Without their help the Chaminade publications would not be complete. These flash bulb fanatics are to be found in their combination club room and dark room which adjoins the Physics lab. The faculty advisor, Brother Joseph Concannon, S.M., stresses the founding purpose of the club: "To provide enjoyment and technical experience while serving others." Organized to bring the dreams of a new Chaminade into a brick and concrete fact, the Building Fund Committee has undertaken the project that is a dream of alumni, student, and faculty. Pioneers in their task, they have disregarded the many difficulties facing them and have plunged headlong into their work. Under the careful supervision of Brother Joseph Buettner, S.M., the committee steadily surges forward with their worthwhile. task. The "Eagle" students of the future can speak with respect of the Committee' that furnished them with an ultra modern Chaminade.
Caring for the library needs of the students is the daily job of the library staff. They see that books are filed correctly and that each book is checked before it is taken from the library. Father Robert Brown, S.M., supervises the staff and its work.

To give students a chance to increase their knowledge and to express themselves in the science of mathematics - this is the purpose of the Math Club. The organization conducts bi-monthly meetings under the supervision of Brother Henry Honnert, S.M. These meetings give the members a chance to gain knowledge over and above what is gained during regular class sessions. The thinking capacity of the students along mathematical channels is therefore increased. Advanced math topics are the subject of discussion at the meetings. Field trips to district high school conventions highlight the club's activities and such trips are usually rewarded with prize winning honors.

The editors and reporters of the Chaminade News deserve a hearty cheer from the whole student body, because of the time and effort they have put into the paper. They assemble news, then re-write and organize it into worth-while reading. The majority of students fail to realize the work that is needed each month to' get this paper out on time. The editors spend many an evening, planning out each page. Reporting the progress of the various athletic teams in their training, practice and games is in itself no small task. Add to this the proper covering of the many sided phases of ext~a curricular activity at the school, and you have a real job on your hands. Its members are always in the background, ever ready to give needed assistance in any way possible. The social activities which they sponsor are marked with success. Work on the book begins in the summer months and is carried on throughout the year. e. $. M. e. The C. S. M. C. is the official Catholic student's religious activity for the archdiocese of Cincinnati. Chaminade . has always been active in fulfilling the objectives of the Catholic Students Mission Crusade. This year the C. S. M. C. units were organized according to divisions, each homeroom having its officers and monthly meetings . . Every month had its special C. S. M. C. activity. Christmas cards were sold in the meetings after each student resolved to "Keep Christ in Christmas." December and Christmas gave the students an excellent opportunity to contribute to Europe's needy through a special collection which was presented to the Superior General, Very Rev. Sylvester Joseph Juergens, S.M., in March. A highly organized and entertaining Chaminade Day program, a Catholic Press Month Exhibit, a Vocation Month display, the Lenten mite box collections, and various novenas of prayer for the Church and Her mission completed the 1947-48 C. In honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, over one thousand students, relatives and friends gathered in the quadrangle at Chaminade High School on the seventh of October . Appropriate decorations and facilities were arranged by the Senior members of the Y. C. S. group for the ev ening services which included a procession, rosary, sermon and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Rev . Francis Gerber, S.M., school chaplain, delivered the sermon . Truly it was a great sign of devotion to Mary and a great source of honor and glory to God .

The Men of Chaminade played 'an important role in this year's Holy Name Parade which took place on Sunday, October 12th. With five thousand men from the various parishes of the city , the students of Chaminade marched as a unit in perfect ranks from First and Monument Streets to the University of Dayton Stadium where the services were conducted by Rev . George Steinkamp . Here was an external manifestation of devotedness to the Holy Name of Jesus!

Part of the Religious program of Chaminade inc;ludes the annual student retreats . The Freshman-Sophomore retreat held in the early part of December was preached by the Rev . Bernard Neubauer, S.M . Juniors and Seniors had their retreat in March with Rev. William Goldschmidt as retreat-master. Many 'graces were won during these days of prayer and resolution.

Under the capable direction of Rev . John G. Dickson, S.M ., a new 'religious function was instituted at Chaminade during the past year. Every third Sunday either the Fathers or Mothers of the boys of Chaminade would join in meditation and prayer. The program also contained an instruction and discussion of interest to the Catholic parents of thee adolescent boy . Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament terminated the afternoon's proceedin gs.

The 98th anniversary of the death of Father William Joseph Chaminade, Founder of the Society of Mary and the Daughters of Mary, was commemorated in a fitting manner by the students and faculty of Chaminade during the week of January 19-23. A school wide contest to obtain appropriate for Father Chaminade was staged. Thousands of entries were made from each homeroom daily. At the close of the contest three winners and titles were chosen by the judges.

A pageant on the life and times of Father Chaminade was viewed by the entire student body at divisional assemblies. On Friday, January 23, a solemn High Mass was offered in Emmanuel Church with the senior choir chanting the Mass of the Angels. Senior Gene Schamel sang Schubert's Ave Maria during the offertory. Tommy Loges molding Chaminade busls for "The Marianisl Magazine ." He has made over 150 of Ihese for prizes.

Daily Holy Mass is offered in the school chapel at eight o'clock for the students' benefit. Through the efforts of the C . S. M . C. the Missa Recitata has been revived this year. Bill Watson, and Bill Poppelmann alternate each morning in reading the Proper of the Mass while the others answer the celebrant by reciting aloud the ordinary parts of the Mass. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass plays a very important part in the religious life of many students of Chaminade.

S. group made its first appearance at Chaminade three years ago with the purpose of forming good Christian lay leaders in the Catholic High School in preparation for the official lay-apostolate of the Church, Catholic-Action. The Y. C. S. is a world-wide movement of which Chaminade is -just a fraction of a part. It has many teen-agers as members in high schools all over the United States under various names working for the same objective. Through the Y. C. S. bulletins these groups throughout the country have been able to keep in close contact with one another's successes and failures iri the movement which has the approval of the Holy Father.

This season, marked with outstanding characteristics, will long be remembered by the players, students and football fans throughout Dayton. The Eagle Gridders, Kings of Dayton, were sparked with all the fire that makes good football. The main feature was the game with SI. James of Port Arthur, Texas. This, the first inter-sectional game in recent years, was proudly acclaimed by all football enthusiasts of Southwestern Ohio. The game was hard fought and much closer than the score indicates. The thrills and chills will not be forgotten. This year's team was manned 'w ith boys willing and able. Fortified with a great deal of experience from last year, they proved themselves a match for any opponent. The big standout was the able line that crushed all who faced it. From the grueling days of practice to game nights, masterful Fuzzy Faust instilled into the team the spirit to fight and fight again so that their opponents were thoroughly trounced. Chaminade was denied the City Championship t hrou g h an i ne I i gibi I ity ruling. With the Texas game and the trip to Ironton, the Season of '47 is another great achievement in the annals of Chaminade's football. The '47 squad set a new scoring record with 280 points.

The National Athletic Honor Society, organized in 1925, is always the goal for Chaminade's athletes. The boys admitted to the ranks of this society must meet national requirements which include good sportsmanship and scholarship. Specifically, the athlete must win an Athletic monogram, maintain an above average scholastic grade, and possess a high degree of citizenship and sportsmanship. The society was founded with a fourfold purpose: to foster high scholarship, to stimulate a desire for balanced training; to foster the ideas of true sportsmanship and to develop leadership. Chaminade can be proud of the many athletes who are on the society's roster.

Although their record is not impressive, the reserves can take pride in the fact that for a group of lads who d idn't know much football, they always tried their best and wanted to learn. The youthfulness and the inexperience of the club was due in great measure to the entire backfield which was made up of Freshmen. Clem Porter and Babe Perkins operated at the Quarterback slot and called signals for the Notre Dame box, the short punt, and the T formation. Jerry Kauth, Don Hess and Red Rath, as well as the other hard running backs were always there with plenty of fight! Up on the £ron.t line Pat Sanders and Yahle held end positions . Koehnen, Borgert 'and Ginn were at the tackle posts, with Trick, Hickey and Axe as guards i Lemons at center.

Any varsity coach will look to this year's Reserve squad, for they promise to produce championship teams in their day too. The trip to Maria .Stein and the games at Osborn gave the reserves a chance to develop. Their defeats give promise of future v ictories!
To sit on the side lines and plot carefully the scores and individual plays is no easy job. A charter is the man behind the team working for the benefit of the Athletic Department and the improvement of the individual athlete. His only source of glory comes when the jubilant fans swarm him for the game statistics. High from the p ress box he views all, but he can't take time out for emotional displays. His eyes are glued to the ball, numbers and refs.

Finishing under an even percentage this year's squad failed to make an impressive season's record but established a third place position in the Big Eight Championship race. The team went down in defeat to rugged teams. When meeting opponents with an equal amount of height and experience they showed impressively. Victories over Cincinnati Purcell, Roosevelt, and Fairview proved that the Eagles had plenty of fight and winning spirit. Although in many defeats, the team was never disgraced and fought and worked hard. Real credit should be given to those senior members who resigned from the squad when they saw that more benefit would be derived if the underclassmen were allowed to gain valuable experience in action. With this year's tough competition behind them, Coach Rollie Myers and the team can look forward to next year with promise of better results.

The Chaminade Bowlers are big-time operators now at Chaminade High School. They have had a very active season this year. Recreation Alley on Sunday night is colored with the enthusiasm which usually characterizes the Green and White. Under the directorship of Mr. Joe Miller and Mr. Robert Dyke, members of the Chaminade Fathers' Club, the keglers ~ave shown a fine cooperative spirit. Brother George McKenzie acted as Faculty Advisor and coordinator, while senior Robert Reid, a high-point man, held position of school-captain.

One of the main highlights of the seas-o n was the Father-Sons Tournament held on Sunday afternoon, December 28th. Some sixty Chaminade bowlers and their Dads participated. First prize went to the Conradys, second to Henz and Brinkman, third to Balsky and J . Fitzgerald, fourth to Mock and Klawon, fifth to Mr. Siefert and his son Norman.

During the season, the FIVE. J's lead the league with 40 wins and 14 defeats . Federspiel, Schweickart, Ryan, Henz and Reid were the high-point seniors who kept. the FIVE J's in the winning streak. Bob Reid, one of . the executives for the Chaminade Bowlers League was a high-point man, .leading both leagues with a 161 point individual score. In the National League, the JUNIOR STAR r were leaders. Senior, Joe Gabor had the highest l1dividual score with 154 points. He was closely fo ' lOwed by Junior, Lee Toht, with a score of 148. At the close of the season single and double tournaments were sponso;ed, and later members participated in the National Telegraphic contest. From the looks of the 1947-48 Bowling season, and the popularity and enthusiasm of this w inter sport for many Chaminade students, we can assuredly say that the Green and White "strikes and spares" are here to stay. It seems only yesterday that we first entered the now familiar halls of Chaminade to register as freshmen. It was a new experience. For most of us it was our first contact with the Society of Mary. It was the first time we had gone to school away from our own neighborhood. We were nervous, but we were proud, for we were now from Chaminade. The year 1944-45 we began to learn what it is like to be "J oe High School." We joined the News Staff, the library workers. We made new friends for a new life. Our frosh basketball team swept the city competition. For us the big occasion was Freshman Night when we showed off some of our knowledge. As studious Sophs we came to have a place in the red brick building on Ludlow and Franklin Streets. Our division led the school for the Turkey, Marianist and Canned Food for Europe drives. We supported the Holy Name Rally at U. of D. and the Minstrel "Moonlight Frolics." Our football team had a perfect record, while our basketball team was city champions. As So phs we did our share in athletics. Our numbers were increased by Latin Schoolers who soon received the ways of we oldtimers. Upperclassmen we became. We began to specialize and follow a set program that would help us in our chosen occupation. We not only branched out in studies but in social life as well. We gave the seniors their prom and we crowded in at Cayoda for the Victory and Mardi Gras Dances. The trip to Massillon with our champion football team will never be forgotten. 1948, the Big Year at last. Our football and basketball teams showed the ability and spirit typical of Chaminade squads. The year seemed to pass overnight. The members of the honor societies were announced. A senior class led in nearly every activity, Turkey drive, Marianist drive. Senior "Men obout town" predominated at all the dances. The prom was a success not equalled in many years. Graduation, the black robes. Being proud because we made the grade, but thoughtful because we are now alumni, no longer students of Chaminade. The Eagle lies before you, the record of our high school career is finished. However, the history of the Class of '48 is just beginning. At Chaminade we learned what a successful Catholic should do in the world and how to do it. The record will show how we have done. Bro. James has said so often, "Make Good" - "We Will." Mary Calls, we must make good!
