The reserve team encountered fierce competition as they took on all the top teams of the area and finished the season with a 6-7 - 1 record. One of the season's highlights was the Dayton Christian game when, with 30 seconds left on the

clock , the Eagle men moved in and scored, breaking the tie and winning the game 3-2. Watching the Alter Knights bite the dust in a 3-1 CJ victory was the highlight of the Frosh's 4-6-1 season.

It's A Hard Knock Life

38/Football

The 1983 Varsity Football Eagles finished an exciting season with a record of 5-5. Victories over Oakwood, AAA power Trotwood-Madison and city rival Colonel White lessened the sting of defeat suffered at the hands of Vandalia-Butler, Pur-

cell-Marion and Hamilton Badin. The finale against Alter proved to be the most exciting game of the season. After rallying from a 14 point deficit, the Eagles fell short 20-21 as a two point conversion attempt failed in the waning seconds. Eight months

of vigorous physical and mental training helped prepare the Eagles for the season. Quarterback Jeff Hall said, " Once we made the-transition of attitude from an individual basis to a group effort, we became better as a team. Because, the

more you put into it as a unit, the stronger the team becomes." The following players were singled out for special awards: Best Defensive Back - Jeff Hall, Most Improved Kevin Goins, Best Offensive Lineman

- Jim Sills, Billy Laffer, Best Defensive Lineman - John Raiff, Greg Liggett, Most Valuable Player - Chris Brumbaugh, Most Spirited - Dave Kauth, Best Offensive Back Claude Vera .

BoomBoom

42/Volleyball

"Boom-Boom was the battle cry of the Varsity Eagal Volleyball Machine as they roared into the C-J record books with 20 wins and only 3 losses. Returning only two Varsity starters, the Eagals worked hard in developing a talented team full of "killer in-

stinct" . The "killers" highlight of their season was a stunning victory over the state's #1 ranked team, Cincinnati Mercy. The volleyballers swept past Greenville and Beavercreek to place 3rd in the tough Troy Invitational. Heading into the State tour-

nament, the Eagals were seeded #1 in the Dayton District . With junior Jean Nitz anchoring the hardhitting C-J team, the Eagals captured their third consecutive Sectional Championship by smashing Xenia and Carroll. The State Finals remained an

elusive dream after the Eagals fell to West Carrolton in the District Finals . The Most Improved award was given to Teresa Martin, and Margie Meyers was named Most Valuable Player.

The Reserve Eagal Volleyball team followed the example of their Varsity cohorts and soared through their season to post an outstanding 15-4 record. A powerful offensive line and an extremely efficient defen-

sive line were the keys to the Eagals' success. In tournament games, the Reserve Eagals destroyed West Milton but lost to Brookville . The Freshman Eagals also contributed to the Eagal victory total. They used a

strong offensive front in compiling a season record of 8-4. Overall, the three Eagal teams ran up an unforgettable season record of 43 wins and only 11 losses.

Serving It Up Hot!

SO/Tennis

The Women's Varsity Tennis Team had a successful season - 13 wins and 7 losses - with the help of coach and mentor Pat Marrinan. The ladies served it up hot as team after team taken on by C-J dined on defeat. The fall weather was an

interesting side dish to the girls' season, as numbing cold forced players to practice in gloves, hats, and coats; and brisk autumn winds added an element of surprise to every shot . The season saw the return of three senior letterwomen: first sin-

gles player, Kathy Mitchell, third singles player, Jane Bohman, and first doubles player, Linda Zamonski. Two transfer students were welcomed; Chari sse and Kim Jenkins. Kim, with her superb volleys, and Chari sse, with her killer serve, added

much to the team . Also playing on the varsity team were Lisa Gondos and Lisa Holtvoigt. High points of the season included the Miami Valley Tourney in which C-J placed second.

Stormy Weather For Netters

52/Tennis

Poor weather conditions plagued the Men's tennis team this past spring . Not until the end of the season was the team able to play consistantly . An opening match loss to Colonel White surprised the team and made the season look as gloomy as the weather. However, the sun broke through when the Ea-

gles smashed both Beavercreek and Trotwood by 4-1 scores. The Eagles brought home their first 1st Place finish in an Invitational Meet when they topped the Brookville Invitational. The doubles team of Kevin Goins and Rodney Tims made it to the District Meet, and #1 singles player, Windsor Marsh, became the

first C-J player to earn a trip to 路the state Meet. Goins and rims were the #2 and #3 single players. Duane Newton, Ted Thompson, Dave Kauth, and Roger Haines were the senior players on the team . After all the wind and rain, the netters finished with a final season dual match record of 7 wins and 5 losses.

The Lady Eagles clawed their way over Carrol, Centerville, and Medowdale, flying to a record setting 19-3 season . Most Valuable Players Margie Meyers and Tammy Wittman led the Varsity to the Oakwood Tournament title. The Lady Eagles also walked away with the champion-

ship trophy from the Carrol Invitational. After being among the top three area teams for most of the season, the hoopsters made it to the District Finals before falling to Colonel White in a 42-43 thriller. The women's reserve and freshmen

teams had successful seasons finishing 15-4 and 6-7 respectively . Mr. Ron Russo, who was named coach of the Year by the District 15 Coach's Basketball Association, summed up the season by saying, "Thanks to these women, we have really made a name for our school. "

have been somewhat unsuccessful, Coach Joe Madden looks forward to bigger and better things. He said that "Despite our youth we were still competing . That in itself gives us

C-J Spirit Pass It On

58/Cheerleading

One small group of girls with very big spirits make up our cheerleading squads. These girls work hard all summer preparing for a year full of hard but rewarding work . You might say a cheerleader's job is never

done. Their duties go far beyond just cheering the team on to victory. They spend many hours making posters and runthroughs, decorating houses, practicing cheers, routines, mounts, and jumps, and pre-

paring for competitions, all of which is done on their own time. Maybe we should give a cheer for' the cheerleaders! Something new this year was the addition of male cheerleaders, Duane Newton and

Kirk Hartlage, during the football season and at rallies. This year's Miss Cheerleader award was received by Robin Rice.

Jane Bohman's rally stopping throw from center field propelled the softballers past the Centerville Elks in the opening round of the District tournament. The 4th seeded Eagles made it to the semi-

finals before falling 6-15 to an outstanding Beavercreek team. The team started a freshman, T.T. Puckett as catcher this year, and relied on sophomore Laura Leo as a starting pitcher . With only two returning Varsity players, young blood added new life to the baseball team as they completed their season with an 18- 12 record . Freshmen Rob Bosticco and Mike Mathile both left their reserve positions to take up two spots on the Varsity team. The season proved to be successful when the

Eagles wiped out Wayne and Meadowdale to bring home a first place finish in the Wayne Invitational. After nipping rival Oakwood in an exciting 8-7 triumph, the Eagles fell short of Sectional title after suffering a 3-8 defeat to Mason . Ed Blair was the first person in c.J . baseball history ever to receive a position on the

Time To Dance Christmas is a season with gifts to buy, vacations to take, trees to decorate, relatives and friends to visit . Even though this time of year demands so much energy from us, a phenomonal amount of C-J students found the time and energy to leave the rush behind and attend the annual turnabout Christmas Dance . Held on December 22 at the Rollerworld Bus Stop Disco, this year's dance attracted one of th'e largest crowds ever at a C-J dance. The theme was "A Snow-Covered Heaven", and although it was bitter cold, there was no snow covering the ground. Yet, despite the frigid temperatures, the occasion was a touch of heaven for all who attended . The warmth and cheer of this joyous season was certainly present as the couples danced and sang the hustle and bustle away .

Guys wait until the week before for ANY tuxedo, restaurant, available florist, and date. The day itself begins for the girls with an early hair appointment .followed by a trip to the florist to pick up his boutineer. Guys start the day off by washing by hand the evening's party-mobile or, for those proessed for time, at the car wash down the street. Later in . the afternoon they'll pick up their tux and her corsage . The evening's adventure starts with not ' one, but two photo sessions; first for her parents, second for his. Dinner follows at a high-class restaurant or at the house of a close friend . Next, it's off to Wampler's Ballarena for, "A Night in Paris," the them of Prom, 1984. Prom/75

The "Qui" Hours Bottles of champagne (carbonated grape juice), wine glasses (plastic), garters, and napkins serve as souveniers from a night full of memories. Tables decorated cafestyle and stars floating in the air give the night a French atmosphere. Tall students and those with the ability to jump high enough catch a star for an additional momento. However, the true stars of the evening are all the "beautiful people" of the '84 Prom Court ruled over by King Andy Smith and Queen Sue Sedlock. Providing live entertainment for the first time at a C-J Prom, the members of Oversieze make the night shine brighter. It has been a night to remember, and the memories have been captured forever in the Prom pictures of the couple standing on a terrace which overlooks the Paris skyline at night. Qui! Qui! Prom Court. ....

Family Affairs There are two events during the year in which the parents are active participants of the C-J social scene. The annual Father -Daughter Dance is one of these events. The dance was filled with excitement as the girls flaunted their unique rendition of the waltz while their fathers strutted their interpretation of the modern dance. The dance was held at the Antioch Temple . The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the winners for the essay contest, "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Louanne Dickensheets was awarded first place; other finalists were Tammy Whittman and Shelia Smith. The Mother -Son Buffet -Style Brur}ch took place dt Ichabods on April 1. They feasted on quiche, ham, and breakfast foods. The entertainment was provided by severa C.J . students who sang.

25 Years Of Music This year the Music department took great pride in presenting the 25th annual Festival of Music celebrating 25 years of musical excellence at Chaminade-Julienne, Chaminade, St. Joseph's, and Julienne. The Marching Band performed at many football games, in area competitions, and in the C-J Indoor Marching Band Competition . Downtown Dayton was the scene of many performances by the Symphonic Band and Mixed Chorus. Highlighting the Jazz Band's year was their trip to Notre Dame Univer~ity to perform in the ND Jazz Festival. The high-kicking Eaglettes and their Pep Band cohorts entertained at basketball games and also participated in several competitions. All in all it was a very busy season with long hours of practice and very rewarding performances .

Weekends Were Made For. Everyone! Friday night and the evening is fine! Load up the car, turn on the tunes, and fly . Weekends are parties! In between, Eagles find themselves at sporting events as spectators or participants, doing the town with that special someone of the week, catching the latest flick , or just "hanging out with the guys." Some Eagles, however , find ' themselves grounded - by a research paper, a Monday test, or parents. In that case, it's wait until next Friday.

elglon Chaminade-Julienne is a Catholic high school. and, as such, requires its students t,o take four years of religion classes. The religion program is set up to follow the natural growth in awareness experienced by high school students at each grade level. The program begins with studies of the Bible and traditional religious beliefs, continues with the sacraments, explores morality, and finishes in the senior year with a discussion of sexuality and marriage.

English How would you like -to meet William Shakespeare? King Arthur? Emily or Charlotte Bronte? Or watch a science-fiction movie at school? And isn't it time you learned to speak comfortably in front of a group? The English department helps students develop their reading, speaking, and writing skills.

Physical Ed The Health and Phys. Ed. Department works to instill in students the Importance of developing and maintaining a healthy body. Half of the freshman year is spent getting into shape by running, swimming, working out with weights, and playing athletic games. The other half of the year is given to the study of the human body, including health practices and first aid.

Home Economics From cooking a hamburger or sewing on a button, to making an eight course dinner or creating your own wardrobe, Home Economics is not just for the home . .. it's for the dorm, the apartment - wherever the C-J student finds himself or herself needing those basic survival skills.

Music One of the departments C-J has always taken a special pride in is the Music Department. Over the years, the Department has won many awards. The excellence of the C-J bands, drill team, choruses, and soloists has made the school a very popular choice for serious music students.

Guidance Being a guidance counselor is a demanding job. The counselors, some of whom also teach, must find time to help with class scheduling, meet with parents, arrange special testing and tutoring programs, give career counseling, listen to student gripes, the list goes on . "

Math You might be surprised to find out that geometrical shapes have something in common with balancing a checkbook, but both are part of the Math department at C-J. Although not everyone will become a computer programmer or a math teacher, any math course a student takes aids in the development of logical, ordered thinking and provides interesting and useful skills such as computer programming, finance management accounting, knowledge of basic algebraic and geometric principles, and advanced math and pre-calculus for the more serious math student.

Science Science at C-J means " . dissecting frogs right before lunch, staying up all night to chart star patterns, learning how notto carry a beaker in chemistry lab. Science classes require hard work, but they are also a 'Iot of fun . A lab partner becomes a best friend and students develop a sense of comaraderie , .' especially the night before a ' test!! 69

Specialists A high school is made up of many people. each doing specific tasks. Some of the people working at C-J are highly specialized to provide necessary services to the school. These "specialists" include the librarian, the school nurse. and a number of auxiliary personnel who work with various aspects of tutoring and special education. The big white vans that can be seen parked outside C-J during school hours are moving offices for the auxiliary personne of tutors and guidance counselors.

Development Chaminade-Julienne is an institution of learning. It is also a business and keeping any business in the black is not an easy task. It requires the skills of four very special people who make up the Development Office. Besides raising money ' for the school through candy and raffle ticket sales. the Development Office is in charge of public relations. alumni. and future planning for the. school.

Administration The Administrative Team here at C-J is devoted to the management of the school's four major areas; Academics, Student Welfare, Business Management. and Dvelopment, under the leadership of the Executive Director. Sr. Carol, Executive Director for the last six years, announced her resignation at the end of this year.

Clerical Staff The Administrative Staff are the people who handle the day to day red tape of running a school. The "ladies in the ottic.e" are truly exceptional people. They funclion alternately as moms, change-givers, message-relayâ‚Źirs, information-centers, problem-solvers and PR people, and, of course, secretaries.

Social Studies Russian magazines at good old all-American 路C-J High School? This may seem strange, but it's part of an innovative social studies program here at C-J. Besides exploring far off counries, Social Studies sudents at C-J can learn about "Jefferson and the boys," investigate the industrial revolution, even take part in a meeting of the United Nations composed totally of high school students! The program offers classes of varying levels of difficulty in American History, U.S. Government, World Cultures, Sociology, and Child Psychology .

Art Industrial Arts I

Students have a need to express themselves and the Art and Industrial Arts Departments allow them to do this creatively. Art students are given the opportunity to try drawing, painting, jewelrymaking, pottery, sculpture, macrame, and printmaking. Industrial Arts includes woodworking and mechanical drawing.

Foreign Language Sprechen Sie Deutsch? GSe habla Espanol? Parlez-vous Francais? These are simple questions asking if you speak German, Spanish, or French; the three language studies offered at C-J. Studying a foreign language culturally enriches students and opens doors to travel, careers in international communications or interpretation, besides giving students advanced placement in college . Winter and Spring saw students and teachers preparing for a summer trip to Morocco and Spain.

Business Many high school students choose to enter the world of work directly after high school. Others plan on becoming business majors in college . The Business Department accomodates both types of'students. Valuable skills in typing, filing, bookkeeping, accounting and business law are introduced and reinforced .
