Senior Memories As the great poet Tony Felix once wrote, A story is a sequence of peoples and places that become skewed with every telling, but a memory is a sequence of feelings and emotions that never skew, never fade and never lose their beauty." In every walk of life, in every path one chooses, memories are created, and in those brief moment when the present turns to past, everything seems right. Whether students enter Chaminade Julienne as bright-eyed freshman, or transfer students from another school, they enter with the optimism to do their best, the fancy to have some fun, and somewhere in there the desire to graduate. However, as easy as it is to merely su up the time spent from beginning to end, it wouldn't be fair to conclude the year without . paying tribute to the high points that helped so many of us through those times when all hope had faded. Along every road that we must travel danger and pain lurk so quietly in the shadows. Around every turn and before every step they loom, shrouding our judgment and confusing au senses. Every so often the hurt tr.umps over our happiness and darkness befalls us. It is then, in our darkest hours that old memories of merrime and bliss come flooding back to us like so many pales of joy and save us from the haze of uncertainty. In these triumphs we again create new memories, this time of achievement success, and courage to overcome. Leaving this school w' not be easy for any of us whether we believe it or not. No matter how much we look toward the future, the people, the halls, even the books will always be a part of us, and though we may-forge the stories, we will always have the memories. /I

" ... Yes we do. We've Got Spirit. How 'bout You? Spirit at Chaminade-Julienne is a living tradition that goes on even today. It can be seen in the crowd at the sold-out basketball games or in the painted faces of fans at the Friday night football games. On Spirit days the hallways are a sea of blue and green and smiling faces! Spirit among Chaminade-Julienne students is an expression of the pride that they take in their school and it's athletics. Receiving the Herald A. Meyer sportsmanship award for three years running shows that C-J students display only positive spirit, win or lose.

Brittany Defilippo cheers on her team with a halftime dance. Her spirit was unmatched. She was caught by the camera performing " the Robot" for the crowd.

Brandon Wicinski and Dimitri Kossoudji are all wrapped in spirit during spirit week.

St. Anthony graduates Jeni Schneemann, Sarah Lefeld, and Amber Trickey could always be found at the game on Friday nights . Their painted faces showed their enthusiasm. Sarah Porter Disagrees with a call during a game. Her voice could always be heard above the crowd. Jessica McQuiston and Molly Quinn scream for the team. These girls never took a break from their cheering. They could always be counted on for support.

Education

Learn/Learn/Learn

"It's all about brain food. LW1ch is the only part of the school day that I'm concerned about and the classes before and after are just an added bonus." Christopher Doyle, freshman

Chaminade-Julienne proves to be a National School of Excellence by providing the MiamiValley with an institution that takes education seriously. The broad academic curriculum allows each student to excel in an encouraging environment. C-J has a wide variety of classes ranging from Photography to Physics and Culinary Arts to Creative Writing. However, the essence of learning doesn't lie within the classes but in the atmosphere that encourages excellence and a community of learning. With an eager student body and a teaching staff willing to lend a helping hand, Chaminade-Julienne shows the key to effective learning is about opening new doors to further education.

Learning is like the icing on the academic cake of know ledge and everyone wants a piece. Sam Pera, Grace Deckler, Marcia Edwards, and Van Brown challenge their freshmen minds with some of Mr. Stachler's science homework.

8

Mr. Stephen Fuchs instructs his Precalculus class w ith inhumane enthusiasm. It's elementary for him to tell others about his best friend: math!

I

Is this going to be on the test? This question doesn't cross the minds of sophomore Chelsey Trupp and juniors Jessica Brackman and Jolm Bmmer as they focus on a lecture given by Mr. Tony Riccuito.

It's a race against time but not education. Ben Rosenbauer and Allison Hall put their junior minds together and rapidly seek answers in a textbook with record speed.

Mr. Denny Thomas wisks his World Literature class away with stories from unfamiliar places. He continually plants added references into his students' expanding files of know ledge.

Ms. Betsy Berlinghof shares religion with a smile. Her underclassmen enjoy learning just as much as she loves teaching.

Peer encouragement and reinforcement are what make C-J's student body stand out. Sophomores Megan Hankey and Mark Trick give each other a helping hand while reviewing class notes together.

"I say yes my Lord ... " The C-J liturgical choir sing of praising the Lord and following in the Lord's ways. The liturgal choir is directed by Mrs. Bettye Sierichs.

Freshman Alex Bonner receives help from Adam Golden in the language lab. C-J students are always willing to help one another to further their education.

When speaking of Education for Faith Formation, Mr. Mickey Momineespoke of ways to change the world including, "Education, prayer and work, and example."

This was just part of the fantastic mural created by F.L.I.G.H.T. (Faith Leaders In God's Hands Today) which hung on the stage of the auditorium for a prayer service. Senior F.L.I.G.H.T. member, Sean Nolan says, " The purpose of this mural is to get everyone in the school to have a part in the preparation for this service. It created a sense of community."

Senior Josh Hackenberg follows one of C-J's great traditions, service, through Into the Streets. Carriage Hill Farms was only one of the many sites the students visited .

Service and Tradition Serving in a community we have come to love ... Dr. Martin Luther King said, "Everybody can be great.. .because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love." C-J is very proud of its traditions in service, in family, and in the community. C-J is known for performing ser'Int the vice and willingly helping a variety of people Str ets in the broader community of the Miami Valley. roc ed! C-J prides itself on its diverse community. C-J is a direct reflection of the diverse world outside the school windows. The student body is comprised of students of various backgrounds, races, and geographical 10cations, enabling all students to be exposed to varying walks of life. By fostering diversity in an environment of young adults, C-J allows its students to learn the elements of acceptance, which will benefit them throughout their entire lives. Despite the many differences among C-J students, all have at least one thing in common: Eagle Pride. It is at this

Sophomore Kenny Harris strolls through the hallway before class. Each student helps contribute to the diversity of C-J.

starting point where we join together and, with time, develop long-lasting friendships. In acknowledging each person's individuality and uniqueness, we learn to accept others for the content of their character. The students of C-J are priviledged to be in such a wonderful environment of diversity in order to get a taste of the real world.

Seniors Christopher Bills, and Carrigg take a moment out of their class to pose for a picture. By senior countless friendships have been among classmates. Sophomore Elise Wise has met new people since becoming a at C-J.

Senior Alex Cameruci and freshman Christina Genovesi are students in Mrs. Lasley's "Elements of Design" course. Students of all grade levels get a hands-on experience creating masterpieces.

12

Freshmen Clu'is Doyle and Kimiko Yoshida have become friends in their short time spent at C-J. Freshman year is a time to branch out and meet new people from various grade schools.

Seniors Ashley Saunders and Stacey Ivey are pictured together on a C-J Spirit Day. The two have developed a close friendship over the course of their careers at C-J. Each class at C-J is a unique experience. Students are given the opportunity daily to interact with one another and hopefully learn fron1 each other as well.

13

Jlllliors Sarah Porter and Rachel Carlson are found laughing heavily at a bottle of water. No one really understands these two greatChaminade-J ulienne friends. Lauren McCallister and Alyson Busch express thier senior pride during a football game. This once again proves the great times one can have at C-J athletic events.

Buddies at School. .. THE CLOSE-KNIT COMMUNITY PROVIDES PERFECT FRIENDSHIPS The Chaminade-Julienne community offers the perfect atmosphere for it's students and faculty to develop lifelong friendships. Many students feel tha t only wi thin the C -J halls can they be themselves and have the opportunity to understand and bond with other peers. The teachers also feel the same way. There is no way to look into a classroom after school or stop into one of the many offices and not see teachers respecting each other and getting along. This is one of the stronges t a ttribu tes that C -J has and is definitely a characteristic that all the students and faculty are proud of. These friendships, only in this educational and spiritual environment, are able to grow and become meaningful and everlasting.

Junior Gian Genovesi can't wait to get to lunch almost every day. This isn' t just because of the break from classes; he can't wait to make weekend lans with his buddies.

Susan Eichenauer, Jennifer Elliot, Charlene Wheeler, & Kathy Fecke aren't just happy about their jobs in the Guidance Office, they're happy about in each others' lives!

In the far left picture, you see Mr. Fuchs holding a math book. Though most people would disagree, when asked who his best friend was, he replied, "I don't need friends. I have math."

Seniors Molly Quinn and Jake SchierIoh reenact a scene from the movie Gilos! while at the potter's wheel. Ceramics is always interesting with these two crazy kids .

These smiling faces show what a great time the students experienced at this years' homecoming dance. Many students didn't take a break dancing all night long! Being on your feet and moving to the music is what our homecoming is all about. A group of friends posed together for a picture. It is very common for students to take pictures, not only with their dates, but also with their group of friends. The ymmg ladies this year wore a variety of dresses, ranging from more formal designs to casual prints. The young men looked handsome as always in their various styles of shirts and ties.

Homecoming A fun-filled "Spirit Week" led up to Homecoming Weekend 2003. Friday evening, our Eagle Football team defeated Cincinnati Roger Bacon at our home stadium in West Carrollton. A large crowd came to support the Eagles in their victory. Along the Sidelines

Senior guys Mitch Thompson, Sean Nolan, Craig Boman, Brandon Wicinski, Dimitri Kossoudji, and Matt Ankeny were the most spirited of the senior fans. They carne decked out with body paint, their chests bared, and the amazing enthusiasm needed to help motivate the senior girls. Ankeny was quoted saying, "Guys, I'm cold. I want to go home." The other senior men refused.

Juniors Stephanie Ross and Taylor Robinson are great friends in and after school. This devastatingly attractive duo is more intimidating on the field than they appear.

The main stage of action was incredibly exciting between both of the fierce womens teams. The seniors instilled fear in the eyes of the juniors only to be beaten in double overtime.

Juniors Tara McGinnis, Kate Athmer, and Sarah Porter cheer on their team from the sidelines. All trU'ee showed a lot of spirit as well as great sportsmanship . The Chaminade-Juliem1e tradition of Powderpuff always proves to be a positive event for both the participants and the onlookers.

Many classmates came out to cheer for their friends from both the junior and senior grades. Assemblies

Throughout the day at C-J everyone is in classes with the same thirty people. Assemblies at C-J are a way for the school to enjoy culture, song, dance and speeches together as a whole. A lot of the assemblies include students but we also invite the Dayton Muse Machine to grace our stage with their talent, but ufortlmatly we were unable to have the privilege of that this year. This year in the way of assemblies we have enjoyed a short play about the life of John Steinbeck, listen to the amazing voices of the Ressurection Elementary Choir, and heard the many different opportunities for careers through our monthly career speakers.

Pins or People Bowling and Men's Volleyball Bowling at C-J is fairly new. It is so new tha t the womens team is allowed to compete but is not recognized by the GCL as of yet. This year the bowlers had a great season and finished strong. On the mens team Curtis Rasnic was recognized as First Team All GCL and Josh Hackenberg and And y Wallace were recognized as Second Team All GCL. On the womens team Jessica Bergman and Claire Stanislow-

ski had strong finishes by qualifying for districts. The Mens Volleyball team is an underestimated team here atC-J. They don'tgettoo much publicity here at the school and so no one knows how well our boys can play. This year the team headed srright for the top. They were fortunate enough to make it to the district level but were dis sap pointed when they sadly lost.

With her fingers in the ball and her feet positioned just right, senior Jessica Bergman gets ready to take out all ten pins.

Ready, set, score! As the game intensifies, seniors David Yingling and Sean Nolan and freshman Tim Ross volley the ball to the opposing team.

For him bowling is more than an extra curricular; it is a way of life.

Chaminade - 1962 University of Dayton (B.A. English) - 1967 Xavier University (M.Ed.Admin.) - 1970

"Only in the agony of parting do we look into the depths of love." -George Eliot Michael D. Trainor was a very special person to the Chaminade-Julienne community . He was a brilliant educator, well-respected as an administrator, and an admirable Christian model for all of those around him. He was involved in Catholic secondary education for over thirty years. Most of his career was spent at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati. "St. Xavier High School is strong today because of Mike's leadership." (Rev. Bill Verbryke, SJ. , President of St. Xavier) Mr. Trainor leaves behind his wife, Dianne, two sons, Scott and Rob, and his mother, Isabelle. He was a devoted son, father and husband. His undying love for his wife was most expressed by his constant care for her when she took seriously ill several years ago. Mr. Trainor will be missed by his loving family, and also by those who he touched in his many years of education and leadership. Just weeks prior to his death, Mr. Trainor participated in a C-J Kairos retreat where he touched many young lives. "He is a true Marianist product and knows our spirit well. He is very creative and innovative in education." (Bro. Bob Withom S.M , long-time friend) Michael D. Trainor's life had a profound impact on all of us. His legacy will continue to shape Chaminade-Julienne for many years to come. He will .be missed by all, but we take comfort in the fact that he is now at peace with the Lord. 156
