Annual Report 2018
• In March 2017, President and CEO Mark D. Weiner retired after 14 years of dedicated service to the agency. The Board and staff expressed their deepest appreciation for his leadership by installing a commemorative plaque at the Bernard Horwich Building in his honor.
Annual Message Reflecting on my first year as CJE’s Board Chair, I am especially honored to present our Fiscal Year 2018 Annual Report because it illustrates what CJE has accomplished as an organization by putting people first above all. We do this even when we encounter challenges, such as the still painful reductions in State funding. However, with a truly dedicated Board of Directors, amazing staff and volunteers, we keep moving forward to ensure we can stay true to our enduring Mission of enhancing the lives of older adults and their families. I have been deeply committed to CJE for 20 years, but I am always humbled when I meet people who experience—and benefit from—our vital programming. As people age, I know firsthand that CJE is a trusted resource in the Jewish and larger community for meeting their evolving needs. Here are just a few highlights of the past year: • Through a grant from JUF’s Fund for Innovation in Health and support from another private foundation, CJE can now help isolated older adults of limited financial means receive Care Management in order to live independently and with dignity in the community. Plus, volunteers are making more Friendly Calls and Visits than ever before to create important social connections which can have a significant impact on a person’s well-being. • Our growing Holocaust Community Services program released Never Heard—Never Forget, a powerful book of Holocaust survivor stories that contains photos, historical documents and original artwork from 2 survivors.
• Celebrate CJE, our annual gala held in October 2017, recognized all of the agency’s distinguished Board Chairs who have led the agency since it was founded by Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago in 1971. The event was an astounding success, and the funds that were raised helped to support many of the programs that are integral to our continuum of care. This Annual Report will provide even more facts and figures about the number of people who have participated in our programs and how we utilize our resources in a judicious manner, always carefully balancing our service and economic objectives. But ultimately, what we do is all about the people we touch, and we’ve profiled some of them in the following pages. Their stories and testimonials about how CJE makes their lives healthier, more independent, more dignified and more meaningful show us why CJE continues to survive and thrive, even in challenging times. Staying true to our Jewish values, including honoring our elders, remains our guiding light and our reason for being. Our successes are due, in large part, to the support we receive from many partners, the most important of which is the Jewish United Fund. We are also indebted to hundreds of organizations, foundations, families and individuals who support our Mission. Finally, our deepest appreciation and heartfelt thanks go out to our entire Board, our staff and our volunteers—from our bus drivers to our cooks… from our social workers to our nurses… and all the hardworking individuals who are on the front lines providing CJE services to 20,000-plus individuals and their family members each year. Respectfully yours,
Kalman Wenig Board Chair
Profiles of Our People In this year’s Annual Report, we are highlighting “who we are” through snapshots of a few clients, residents, family, staff and volunteers associated with CJE SeniorLife. This compilation of selected profiles provides a way to share the individuality of people we serve, the diversity of our programs and services and the commitment of staff members who work with—and for— our clients, residents and community members. These are just a few of the 20,000 people who CJE touched in 2018, while we embraced our values and fulfilled our Mission to enhance the lives of older adults and family members through Life Enrichment, Supportive Resources, Healthcare, Research and Education. In addition, we are available at different stages of their lives, providing access to 35-plus complementary programs and services for a seamless continuum of care. That’s what we proudly call the “CJE Advantage.”
Nancy Weinberg
Joel Cohen
Lorraine Friend
Todd Lief
Nancy Weinberg didn’t paint for a year after moving to Lieberman Center, because, as she put it, “my hands quiver.” But an insightful Art Therapist got Nancy painting again by working with her to cut and arrange paper pieces into mosaics. From there, she began painting, and her room at Lieberman Center is now chock-full of her creations. Nancy clarifies further: “I have a lot of pain in my body, and when I paint I forget about it. Art Therapy inspires me to conquer the limitations of my hands. It’s amazing I’ve done so much art with my hands shaking like they do.” She can’t imagine not making art: “When you’re painting, you’re alive!”
Joel Cohen had a successful 40year career as an economist that he eventually left to pursue untapped career interests. This led to his current graduate studies in social work that provided him the opportunity to complete an internship with CJE’s Counseling Services. During his internship he was mentored by a Counseling staff member as he ran support groups, provided one-onone counseling and helped facilitate community programs. The 67-yearold Cohen believes that “What’s most important is the commitment to learning and adapting.” He adds: “Working with the older population has given me a different perspective about my own life.”
Lorraine Friend loves Pet Therapy, a regular offering for residents at Lieberman Center for Health and Rehabilitation. She describes her weekly interactions with her favorite four-legged visitor, a large, black, mixed-breed dog named Abbot: “I like to pet Abbot’s head and stroke his furry back. It makes me feel good because it’s so calming.” It’s obvious that her connection with Abbot is strong: “He comes up and sits next to you and looks at you with his big brown eyes. It’s like real communication. You look at his eyes and you can tell what’s on his mind. I could visit with him indefinitely.”
When first diagnosed with a form of dementia, Todd Lief’s wife was told that it would be very important to keep him engaged. She was fortunate to discover near their home in downtown Chicago the “hidden gem” of CJE at Sinai, an Adult Day Services program that provides activities and supports persons with early to moderate memory loss. Todd’s wife found the support and engagement that she was looking for. Todd is pleased with his wife’s “find” also, remarking, “I am happy to be at CJE at Sinai because there’s always something different going on here. I find it very interesting and enjoyable. Plus, the staff here is very good.”

Alex Kagan
Bonnie Lande
Alex Kagan was born in Minsk in the former Belorussia and lost all of his family during the Holocaust. He went on to earn a PhD in computer science and had a career in artificial intelligence. Now, while living at Swartzberg House, he has merged his knowledge of computers with his interest in fine art. He obtains photographic images from friends and others and converts them into expressive artworks through digital manipulation. “Though not an artist in the traditional sense, I was always interested in art from my younger years. So these two things [computers and art] came together inside my heart.”
A need existed for new residents at Weinberg Community’s Gidwitz Place to be welcomed to their new home in a more inviting yet formal way. So, with the support of staff leadership, Gidwitz resident Bonnie Lande and volunteer Cathy Wolfson spearheaded the Gidwitz Ambassador Program. Together, they match incoming residents with volunteer ambassadors. After a kick-off luncheon for selected volunteer prospects, the number of participants has grown, and the Program has been a great success. Bonnie attributes this success to the Program’s simplicity: “Just knock on the new resident’s door the first day they arrive, introduce yourself, invite them to a meal and then go back the next day.”

Catherine Samatas
Magdalyn Guzzo
Jill Revivo
Rachel Levy is the first person to chair the Associate Board (AB), formed in 2014 for young professionals who are dedicated to enhancing the lives of older adults. Rachel enthuses about her work with CJE: “I love all the volunteer opportunities at CJE, and going out to all the communities. Residents enjoy having us there and you see all the joy in the room.” She offers her opinion about the Associate Board: “The AB is great if you want to help a larger organization, be creative and link with your network and communities. If you want to give back to the community and are motivated to support CJE, the Associate Board is the perfect answer.”
Consumer Assistance (CA) Resource Specialists have the often difficult task of helping adults with lower incomes “make ends meet.” Studies show that 85% of older adults want to remain in their homes in the community, or “age in place,” as it is termed. CA is committed to helping them do just that. Christie Norrick notes, “We are on the front lines when it comes to connecting older adults to public benefits and other resources so they can maximize their personal assets and avoid a crisis. Our professional Resource Specialists are SHIP-certified and can provide free benefits counseling or connect people to other community resources.”
Catherine Samatas manages the activities of The Center for Healthy Living (CHL) that helps older adults link to community resources, make informed choices about aging issues and maintain their physical, mental and social well-being. CHL provides programs and services in our residences and the community that enrich the mind, body and spirit through lifelong learning, health promotion, screening events and more. Catherine emphasizes that “staying active and engaged with life is an important component of healthy aging. I and other staff members focus on presenting unique, innovative programs that promote socialization, are fun and are good for you.”
For more than 45 years, CJE’s HomeDelivered Meals (HDM) has helped to reduce the food insecurity of lowincome, homebound seniors living in greater Chicago. Managed by Magdalyn Guzzo, HDM is a member of Meals on Wheels America and employs their philosophy of “more than just a meal.” For example, all HDM deliveries include well-being checks, even on days when clients don’t receive meals. As Magdalyn sees it: “Home-Delivered Meals is an integral community support for older adults, providing vital nutrition and an important sense of community that keeps seniors living independently and healthier at home as well as feeling more connected to their community.”
Jill Revivo, LCSW, is a member of Your ElderCare Consultants, a team of geriatric care management professionals. Your ElderCare Consultants (YEC) manage health transitions, oversee finances and help with housing options, downsizing and clutter. Jill adds that “We also provide back-up care through Just in Case™, a service that allows you to pre-arrange for the care of a loved one if you are going out town, you live far away and there’s a medical emergency and more. We help you plan proactively for the unexpected, so that important information, such as the names of healthcare providers and medications, are readily available.”

Helen Grimaldi
Manager, CJE Care Management. Through the generosity of The Albert and Lucille Delighter and Marcella Winston Foundation and JUF’s Fund for Innovation in Health, CJE has established a new Care Management and cost-share Home Care program to promote the safety and well-being of older adults so they can live as independently as possible in the community. Helen Grimaldi, LCSW, Program Manager, says “the Program is unique because it is targeted to meet the needs of older adults who fall in the gap between eligibility for government programs and the ability to pay privately.” Care managers complete a holistic assessment of each older adult to identify needs and develop individualized care plans to address these concerns. Connections are established with other CJE services and relevant resources.

Profiles of Accomplishments
Holocaust Community Services published the outstanding book Never Heard - Never Forget. The book features stories of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust on Nazioccupied territory of the former Soviet Union. Holocaust Community Staff received CJE’s President’s Award for this achievement. Weinberg Community staff worked with CJE Leonard Schanfield Research Institute to launch the Emergency Department Eldercare Navigators (EDEN) Program at Glenbrook Hospital. It is a pilot program that trains volunteers to assist older adults living with memory issues when they visit the Emergency Department. The program received funding from the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, Institute for Advancement of Senior Care and Washington Square Health Foundation.

CJE Care Management was established through the generosity of The Albert and Lucille Delighter and Marcella Winston Foundation and JUF’s Fund for Innovation in Health. Giving Tuesday was a big success. CJE raised $34,759 on this annual day of giving in November. The Associate Board of CJE hosted an Art & Aging reception that included an art exhibit and bourbon tasting. In November the Associate Board raised over $8,000 with its second Spin for Seniors event that was held in two locations: The East Bank Club and SALT in Northbrook.
CJE’s Home-Delivered Meals (HDM) participated in the 16th annual March for Meals campaign, a celebration of Meals on Wheels America (MOWA) and received $2,500 through Kellogg Company Employees Fund. HDM also received a $7,137 grant from MOWA for participating in Subaru of America’s 2017-18 Share the Love event. Subaru gave $250 for every new Subaru purchased or leased to customers’ favorite charities, including MOWA, of which CJE is a member. Adult Day Services-Evanston celebrated 40 years of continuous service to the community. Also, for the second year, the clients of Evanston’s Adult Day Services were chosen to showcase their work at Evanston Made, a month-long celebration in June of local arts and artists at the Evanston Art Center.
Holocaust Community Services received a donation of $4,000 from Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School eighth graders from their Birthday Card and Tree Certificate fundraising programs. Concurrent with this, the students listened as Holocaust Survivors told their stories first-hand. In another education-related event, students from Vanderbilt University spent their spring break volunteering with Holocaust Community Services and other agencies.
Amy Eisenstein, PhD, Director of Leonard Schanfield Research Institute, authored (with others) many publications in 2018, including: A Method to Create a Standardized Generic and Condition-Specific Patient-Reported Outcome Measure for Patient Care and Healthcare Improvement in Quality of Life Research; and A CommunityPartnered Approach to Inform a Culturally Relevant Health Promotion Intervention for Stroke in Health Education & Behavior. Rebecca L. Berman, PhD, Senior Investigator of the Leonard Schanfield Research Institute, had an article (authored by her and others) published in The Journal of Pharmacy Practice. It details the use of a MedUseQ, a valuable tool for assessing medication use problems.
The Bureau of Sages, a research project that includes the voices of Lieberman Center residents in an aging study, was invited to be an advisor on aging projects at Johns Hopkins and Northwestern University. A representative from the UN International Federation on Aging attended a meeting of the Bureau, which just received additional funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). A video series featuring CJE professionals, family caregivers and older adults from the Bureau of Sages project led by Dr. Amy Eisenstein, was created for a Dementia Friendly America Workshop presented by the Illinois Cognitive Resources Network.
18 internships in Counseling Services (four), Development (one), Research (seven) and Lewis Summer Internships (six) enabled college and graduate students to work and learn alongside CJE professional staff. CJE representatives joined other Jewish communal leaders and professionals in Springfield to meet with Illinois government officials, including Governor Bruce Rauner. They also traveled to Washington, DC.

Create a Jewish Legacy Program
The Council for Jewish Elderly (dba CJE SeniorLife) Endowment Foundation was created in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago’s Agency Endowment Program, which was established to ensure that CJE SeniorLife and our sister agencies have the necessary resources to meet the community’s needs. All commitments to CJE’s Endowment Foundation are recognized as gifts to the Jewish Federation’s Centennial Campaign. CJE SeniorLife is also proud to be part of the Jewish Federation’s Create a Jewish Legacy program, designed to train and support Chicago Jewish day schools, agencies and synagogues in the area of legacy giving. $100–$299 @Properties 4D, Inc.
