Message from Our Board Chair HONORING JAMES C. MILLS

Dear Friends,

Many thanks for joining us tonight at the 10th anniversary of Celebrate CJE and to honor my dear friend and colleague, Jim Mills. As a result of every position he has graciously accepted over the years—from Committee Chair to Vice Chair to Board Chair—CJE has benefited from his leadership, wisdom, and good counsel. Over a decade ago, Jim had the foresight to envision the great value of an annual event to showcase CJE’s important work and to raise the necessary funds to sustain its vital programs and services. He then rolled up his sleeves to make it a reality. We are so grateful for his unwavering commitment to our mission. Tonight, as CJE SeniorLife’s Board Chair for only a few more weeks, I want to share with you the wonderful work of CJE and the importance of showcasing it in this annual celebration. I now better understand why Jim is so devoted to CJE. For the past two years, it has been my privilege to help advance an organization that is focused on enhancing the lives of seniors. What I now clearly understand is that while CJE is a strong, trustworthy and innovative health and human services provider, it is also facing enormous challenges due to ongoing changes in the healthcare system and looming state budget cuts. As a result, CJE is driven to increase awareness and donations from all of you to support our programs and services for an increasing client base that now stands at more than 23,000 individuals and their family members, a significant increase over past years. More people are relying on us for life enrichment, essential support services, healthcare, research and education. I hope you will support our efforts to ensure the health and well-being of the generation that has shown us, by example, the true meaning of tikkun olam.

I am proud of several noteworthy accomplishments during my tenure such as the opening of the Bernard Heerey Annex at the Friend Center. This new space increased our ability to provide residential and day services for seniors with dementia. Another highlight was the creation of CJE’s Associate Board whose members will hopefully play an important role in our plans for the future. But it really takes a “village” to make CJE work so well… this is truly a team effort. I want to thank President and CEO Mark Weiner, CJE’s Board of Directors and the hardworking staff members for their dedication to CJE and for living its enduring values—respect, advocacy, compassion, intention, innovation and accountability.

Finally, I want to express my deepest thanks and appreciation to Celebrate CJE’s Event Co-Chairs Susan Arbeiter Reese and Kal Wenig, the entire Event Committee, our Board of Directors, sponsors, ad book contributors, our staff and, of course, to all of you for attending and supporting CJE. Thank you for making our 10th anniversary Celebrate CJE event a night to remember. I have very strong and deep memories of the initial conversations I had with our dear friend and honoree, Jim Mills, whose unparalleled creative vision a decade ago propelled the success of this event. A heartfelt Mazel Tov to Jim and his entire family for all they have done for CJE!

I am truly honored to be the President & CEO of the CJE team and very thankful to work with a Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and donors who are all deeply committed to taking on the challenge so poignantly stated by Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel: “The test of a people is how it behaves toward the old.”

There are many accomplishments to celebrate this year including the emerging and critical partnerships with neighboring hospitals, more renovations and the introduction of dialysis at Lieberman Center, the completion of the Bernard Heerey Annex at Weinberg Community, the addition of Holocaust Community Services into CJE’s service offerings, innovative product development such as the Virtual Senior Center, and a newly engaged Associate Board. As you may imagine, people often seek out our services when they are going through tough times, such as a decline in health. However, what we’ve learned over the years is that when our community comes to one of our many locations or participates in a program, they receive more than just assistance. They find new opportunities to grow, learn and thrive—to truly be enriched by all our programs and services. We are so proud that we helped over 23,000 older adults and family members last year.

I would like to acknowledge everyone who has worked so hard to ensure the success of this evening: Event Co-chairs Susan Arbeiter Reese and Kal Wenig, the entire Event Committee, our Board of Directors, sponsors, ad book contributors, our staff, and of course, all of you… our new guests as well as long-time supporters. A warm, engaging smile. Eyes that twinkle. A gracious elegance. And a keen mind for brand and business development. Those exceptional attributes, and many more, define “our” Jim Mills. In 2015, with gratitude for Jim’s unparalleled creative vision and stewardship, we are delighted to honor him on October 13 at the 10th anniversary of Celebrate CJE.

We use the phrase “our Jim” with great affection because CJE SeniorLife looked quite different when he first joined the Board of Directors in 2001. One might assume that Jim’s wife, Lois Zoller, was the impetus for Jim’s initial interest in CJE. Lois, a self-proclaimed “professional volunteer,” has a distinguished passion for philanthropy, activism and fundraising that has taken her—and Jim— around the world to serve a wide-range of organizations. In addition, her parents, Ruth and Irvin Swartzberg, helped build CJE’s Swartzberg House in 1980, a 99-unit senior apartment building in Rogers Park that is now home to many residents who emigrated from the former Soviet Union.

While Lois’s dedication to helping those in need is legendary, Jim actually credits his dear friend David Sher, z”l, CJE’s highly-respected Board Chair from 1993–1996, for steering him in CJE’s direction. Mr. Sher is remembered with admiration for the way he guided CJE through a critical growth period as well as his special knack for coaching staff on effective problem solving. Whoever sparked the fire, Jim has certainly proved himself to be invaluable from the moment he made the commitment to be a CJE lay leader. Prior to serving as CJE’s Board Chair from 2009–2011, Jim had already made his mark by chairing CJE’s Program, Marketing and Nominating Committees. It was his business acumen forged by an entrepreneurial spirit that helped Council for Jewish Elderly navigate a complicated, emotion-charged name change to CJE SeniorLife in 2008. During dozens of meetings with hundreds of stakeholders, he was an influential advocate for refreshing and revitalizing CJE’s brand image that included changing the logo-mark from a more traditional flame to a unique adaptation of a pomegranate. But by then, we already knew that Jim had a creative and innovative flair for launching new ideas. As chair of the inaugural Celebrate CJE event in September 2006, Jim

wanted to showcase CJE’s outstanding network of care for older adults while raising significant dollars to sustain these programs for the thousands of people who turn to CJE every year for help. He took great pride in personally selecting the table cloths, dinnerware, entertainment, and of course, the menu. Over 700 people attended and were astounded by the warmth, elegance and success of the evening. Jim graciously agreed to chair the second event in 2007 and the rest is history!

It comes as no surprise that Jim’s talent for integrating design, marketing and customer service at these initial Celebrate CJE events would set the bar for years to come. Professionally, Jim has over 40 years of experience in design and product development, sourcing, packaging, marketing, merchandising and sales to domestic and international companies. From 1977–1995, Jim was the President and CEO of JMP-Newcor International, Inc., a company he founded with the late Jerry Poncher. From 1995 until his retirement in 2001, Jim was the President of Masterpiece Editions, Ltd., a company he founded to market ceramic and glass tabletop products and decorative accessories worldwide under a license from the Estate of Pablo Picasso. These art-inspired collections were sold in major museums including the Smithsonian, Metropolitan, Guggenheim, The Art Institute of Chicago, as well as retail stores such as Bloomingdale’s and Fortunoff. In 2011, when it was time for Jim to pass on his gavel to the incoming CJE Board Chair, Mark Weiner, CJE’s President & CEO, expressed the following sentiment:

“The dictionary definition of partner is someone who is united or associated with another or others in an activity or a sphere of common interest. But my non-dictionary definition of Jim Mills is: mensch, advisor, predictably kind, great listener, positive motivator, and most importantly . . . friend.”

Indeed, Jim Mills embodies the definition of an authentic friend . . . to CJE’s mission, its staff and volunteers, to seniors in the Jewish and larger community, and to his colleagues who cherish working with—and beside— him. CJE Myths Mission & Facts & Values

See if you can correctly identify the following statements about CJE SeniorLife as myths or facts. 1. Food “insecurity” does not exist in Metropolitan Chicago. MYTH—There are many people in our community who do not eat enough to meet their daily nutrition requirements. CJE helps meet this need by delivering 89,016 nutritious kosher meals to the homes of 527 at-risk seniors. 2. Applying for government benefits is easy. MYTH—Seniors and their family members often need help navigating government agencies to receive the benefits to which they are entitled. Last year, CJE’s Consumer Assistance Department helped 818 seniors with low-to-moderate incomes apply for government or community benefits, saving each of them an average of $2,033. 3. Seniors do not necessarily have to move out of their own homes as they age. Fact—Many seniors only need a helping hand to “age in place.” One way that CJE helps is through community-based services such as our fleet of Shalom buses and Medicar vans. Last year, 1,800 clients were given 48,817 rides to doctor appointments, the grocery store, family events and much more. 4. CJE only serves a small population in West Rogers Park. MYTH—CJE provides life enrichment, supportive resources, healthcare and research for 23,000 seniors and their family members throughout Chicago and the north/northwest suburbs.

CJE SeniorLife programs and services complement one another, creating a smooth continuum that can be tapped into across the span of a person’s lifetime. Older adults, their families and caregivers turn to us at different stages in their life for our comprehensive network of life enrichment, supportive resources, healthcare, research and education. LIFE ENRICHMENT

SUPPORTIVE RESOURCES

CJE’s programs and services in our residences and the community provide an enriched mind, body, spirit and cultural experience for older adults. Our philosophy: staying active and “engaged with life” is an important component of healthy aging.

A wide range of programming and services provides support and direct services to family members, caregivers, and the older adult to promote aging in place at home and in the community.

Center For Healthy Living (Chl)

Offered at Weinberg Community for Senior Living, a statelicensed campus in Deerfield.

CHL helps older adults link to community resources, make informed choices about aging and maintain their physical, mental and social well-being. Lifelong learning, health screenings and cultural and social events help them lead healthy, independent lives. Our new web-based Virtual Senior Center connects older adults at home to classes.

Religious Life

We recognize that a healthy spiritual life is the foundation for the health and wellness of older adults. CJE SeniorLife offers a wide range of spiritual, religious and cultural programs in our residential settings. Pastoral Care is provided by our full-time certified chaplain. Shabbat and holiday services are conducted at a number of CJE locations. CJE works closely with clergy and places of worship to reach out to their congregants.

Volunteering

Hundreds of volunteers provide vital services to clients including participating in activities, delivering meals, and visiting those who are isolated.

Assisted Living

Gidwitz Place: one-and two-bedroom apartments for older adults who require a supportive environment yet still wish to live independently. Amenities include personal care services, housekeeping, kosher dining, a full schedule of activities, respite care and 24/7 nursing. The Friend Center For Memory Care: For people with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive impairments. Spacious private rooms, assistance with bathing and grooming, stimulating activities and kosher meals. Respite care is also available. New Bernard Heerey Annex has Great Room and Adult Day Services program space.

Independent Living

CJE SeniorLife owns and operates subsidized and affordable apartment buildings for older adults who qualify for government-subsidized housing. Robineau Residence is a group-living residence for 24 older adults with supportive services.

Holocaust Community Services

A free program for survivors and their families provides some financial assistance, socialization programs, support groups and assistance with reparations.

Mission & Values

Adult Day Services (ADS)

ADS offers supervised, structured programs for people with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive impairments, as well as those who are frail or socially isolated. A group setting maximizes each participant’s potential by promoting autonomy, creativity and self-esteem. CJE’s ADS programs are in downtown Chicago, Evanston and Deerfield. Culture Bus™ is available downtown.

Your Eldercare Consultants

Geriatric care managers assess and consult with older adults and their families as they experience the transitions of aging. Acting as liaisons to family caregivers, they coordinate service delivery, guide decision-making and monitor care. New Bill Paying and Clutter Management and Organization Services now available. Consumer Assistance

Our staff in Chicago and the northwest suburbs provides free information, resources and advocacy on issues that impact older adults, including consumer benefits, community services, public assistance, Social Security, housing referrals, home repair and transportation. Russianspeaking staff available.

Counseling

CJE’s licensed clinical social workers provide counseling to older adults and their families, along with facilitating a variety of support groups. The Linkages Program assists seniors who are primary caregivers of adult children with disabilities.

Food Services

We deliver kosher meals through Home-Delivered Meals to older adults. CJE also offers weekly delivery of freshfrozen meals via our Kosher to Go™ program, as well as kosher catering. All is cRc approved, except catering from Weinberg Community, which is rabbinically-supervised kosher.

Personal Care Services

We assist with activities of daily living and chore house keeping through an arrangement with Gentle Home Services or CJE’s personal care for eligible low-income seniors.

Transportation

Shalom Bus offers scheduled door-to-door trips to grocery stores, medical appointments and social events. Medicar provides transportation via paratransit vans to and from medical appointments or other destinations.

HEALTHCARE

Our programming and residential settings address both post-acute and chronic medical and psycho-social needs in coordination with the larger healthcare system.

Skilled Nursing

With 240 private rooms, Lieberman Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Skokie provides long-term care, a shortterm rehabilitation unit and a dementia special care unit. Hospice and respite care are also available.

Short-term Rehabilitation at Lieberman Center serves patients after hospitalization, with physical, occupational and speech therapy to Medicare-certified patients. Also available are specialized Parkinson’s, congestive heart failure, dialysis, infusion and wound care services. Lieberman +30 Transitional Nursing monitors patients for 30 days postdischarge. Creative arts, therapeutic, recreational and spiritual programs are offered daily. Kosher dining is approved by the Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc).

RESEARCH AND EDUCATION

CJE enables the study of new methods and models of care and the training of professionals to advance the delivery of high quality services and programming.

Greetings to the Officers, the Board, and friends of CJE SeniorLife. I know I am speaking for all attending the 2015 Annual Dinner, as well as so many others, in asking how can we thank you for the fine work that you do to make the lives of seniors in our communities so enjoyable, fulfilling, and fruitful. The help, assistance, and services you provide have not been duplicated by any other agency anywhere in our State. I can only say on behalf of all who have had need for your services, Mazel Tov for the dedication you have for our seniors. CJE SeniorLife is the standard all others try to emulate. From home delivered meals, rides to medical appointments, seniors' activities, guidance to those who need assistance, spiritual activities, and all the way to living arrangements and assisted living, you do so much for those who have provided for so many. When I was in the Senate, and Chairman of Appropriations, and its Conference Committee, I “kvelled” at the respect you received for home delivering meals and other necessitates around the state to people who weren’t even of our faith. No other faith based organization was doing that. But that is what distinguishes us from others. Tikkun Olam. As a former Chairman of Government Affairs, I had the pleasure of being with your leadership as we went to our Illinois and United States Capitols and saw firsthand the respect that your staff and lay leadership received from those with whom they interact; and as former Vice Chairman of Jewish Federation we marveled at the job your lay leaders and staff do for so many with such honor, respect, dedication and compassion; seeking nothing in return except the feeling one gets from helping others. My message today is to ask that you each continue doing what you do so well so that as we age we will always know that you will be there to serve us and our caregivers and all seniors who need your fine care. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of being our honoree than Jim Mills. For as long as I’ve known Jim he has dedicated himself to this organization and the people they serve; and he accomplished so much. To Jimmy, I say Mazel Tov for a well-deserved honor.
