All hands on deck! It's truly a team effort at Weinberg Community. All departments are pitching in where they are needed. Here are a few examples: Checkingtemps of anyone entering the building, serving meals, runningone-onone activities, streaming virtual programs on our in-house channel, and doing live video chats with families and friends who can’t visit during this time.

Donation Shout-Outs

Thank you, All Points Public Relations, for donating these amazing printed activity booklets. One activity booklet includes at-home tips and checklists, recipes, exercise and brain games which can be enjoyed for all ages to stay entertained and motivated during their time inside.

Jorie DiCocco and GoGo Squeez® donated 75+ boxes for our staff and their families. It’s so very thoughtful that Jorie and her team are thinking of our essential workers and their own families at this difficult time. Thank you!

Many thanks also to: Gloria Santulan (Dining Associate), Jonalyn Gumaya (Administrative Assistant), and their family for donating Filipino food and sandwiches to our entire staff!

Ellen Grossman, for running a fundraiser in the community and donating the funds to health care workers. She fed our entire staff with yummy pizza and salad from Viccino’s in Glenview.

Quick Covid Update as of April 24, 2020

Since our call that was sent out on Wednesday, April 22, there are no new updates regarding Covidcases.

The same numbers remain today: 3residents in-house testing positive and no new employeestesting positive. We continue to follow all precautions as discussed in each update, such as:

• Residents temperatures are now being taken 2 times daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. Anyone with possible symptoms or who have had possible exposure are being quarantined.

• Staff temperatures taken twice daily. • Sanitizing and disinfecting areas throughout Weinberg on a continual basis. • Staff wearing masks and other protective gear. • Residents wearing masks outside of apartments. • No mingling between people living in different apartments.

Should your family member inform you that they aren’t feeling well, please urge them to let us know immediately.

A friendly reminder: Please do not bring anything that is not necessary to your loved ones at the Friend Center or Gidwitz Place. We know that you just want to show you care by bringing them various types of gifts, but this could present some risk of exposure to other residents or staff.

Visiting grandma sure looks a little different these days...but at least there are still smiles all around!

GEM Award Winner: Teresa Long

Let’s congratulate Teresa Long as April’s GEM winner! We are delighted that she has been a part of our activity team since October. Teresa spends most of her days at the Friend Center enriching the lives of our residents through engaging activities. Gidwitz Residents loved seeing Teresa hostThursday night BINGO and Wednesday outings. We look forward to having group programs again soon! We miss seeing all our residents having fun together!

Interview with Residents: Ernest & Ursula

Poetry Bridges the Coronavirus Divide

Ernest F. and his wife Ursula are residents of Gidwitz Place. A “beshert” and special pairing, they met in 1952 at a Young Adult Dance at Congregation Rodfei Zedekin Hyde Park. They settled in Munster Indiana and raised a family there for 47 years.

During their 66 years of marriage they have spent very little time apart, that is, until recently. In January, Ursula was injured and had to spend time in the hospital and then rehab. Though he very much missed her not being at home, it was not a terrible problem for Ernest. He would visit her two out of every three days or so, which was quite frequently. Then when Covid-19 hit, he was prevented from seeing her at all! That’s because all rehab centers and hospitals began to prohibit visitors— even immediate family—in order to stem the spread of the virus. Ernest adjusted by calling daily but that just didn’t work well. He noticed their children sending her puzzles and all kinds of things. But that didn’t quite do it for Ernest either. He needed to find something more emotional, more expressive, for his bride of 66 years. So, he started sending her poems. Ernest says that his poems often come on a whim, and that he must be inspired. As you can see, these beautiful words were inspired by a restrictive lockdown and a terrifying pandemic, showing love and poetry conquers all.

We thought we would try a group led by Rabbi Stern for families connecting to other families during this challenging time. We would love to see you!
