Fall 2015
GIDWITZ PLACE FOR ASSISTED LIVING | FRIEND CENTER FOR MEMORY CARE
Welcome to our Fall Newsletter! We are in the middle of a very busy holiday season. Labor Day was several weeks ago and I had the honor of visiting with so many of our Friend Center families who joined us for delicious BBQ food, a very talented balloon artist and a musician at the Friend Center. Additionally, I hope everyone had a sweet, healthy, happy and peaceful New Year. We enjoyed having so many family and friends from the community join us for dinner and services throughout the last few weeks. I hope everyone was able to spend some time in our beautiful sukkahs that our staff built on both the Gidwitz and Friend Center patios. The residents had fun decorating them with staff and students who joined us from the Chicagoland Jewish High School. Furthermore, our residents worked very hard, practicing for the Songsters performance held on October 11th. They enjoyed seeing the audience in our social hall, and gave them a fine performance! As we have done annually, we administered flu shots to all residents at Weinberg Community. . Our community continues to be very busy in October, hosting many community events and educational programs. Please make sure to check the calendar for dates and times pertaining to our Transition to Wellness Programs that everyone is welcome to attend! Please remember to think of us for any family or friends who would benefit from our community, whether it be for Gidwitz, Friend Center or our Adult Day Program! We appreciate any and all referrals! As always, I am available for anyone who wants to talk at any time, Jennifer Weininger Executive Director Of Weinberg Community for Senior Living 847-236-7856

A few reminders: Please sign in at the front desk, and sign out when leaving—-we need to insist on this for the safety of our residents and staff. Please obtain a form at the front desk when going out of town, and indicate an emergency contact for when you are away. You can alternately call the front desk to give the above information, and it will be sent to pertinent staff. If you have a private caregiver working for you, please make sure we are aware of this. If your family member is in the hospital and will be going to a rehab facility, please advise us, to guarantee continuity of care. If you bring your pet to our building, please make sure that he/she is on a leash at all times.
As a reminder– If we do not have your current email address, please leave at the front desk with the receptionist or email Tawanna.shack@cje.net so that we can keep current information on file. Albert and Birdie Fine Albert and Birdie Fine moved to Weinberg from a condo in Highland Park only 3 months ago, though it feels as if they have been with us much longer. From day one, they quickly became integrated into our community, making many friends, welcoming all and always ready to lend a helping hand to their peers. Al attends Shabbat Services, Birdie never misses Women’s Group and, as a couple, they attend exercise classes, arts and crafts and Songsters. Albert attended Crane Tech and Crane Junior College prior to being drafted into the Navy, where he spent 3 years as a corpsman. Birdie graduated from Marshall High School. They met at a B’nai Brith Girls dance at the Hamilton Hotel in Chicago, where the girls took off one shoe, throwing it into the middle of the dance floor. The gents each picked up a shoe, including Al who traded his with his cousin. That fateful act led to Al meeting Birdie and—3 years later—a wedding in the Party Room of Gold’s Restaurant on Roosevelt Road. They had a total of $700 to cover costs. When asked if they had a honeymoon, Birdie said “We have a honeymoon every day.” “God has blessed us”, referring to their life together and their family. One son, Mark, is a gastroenterologist and resides in Deerfield. Their daughter, Shelley Belofsky, lives in Palm Desert. All the children and grandchildren have had good educations—a Rabbi, several MDs, a teacher, an engineer, and so on. Keeping a Kosher home, with their two children attending Schechter and Ida Crown, and with the Fines members of Moriah Congregation, it is ironic that Albert had a successful career as the only supplier of uniforms to all of the schools in the Chicago Catholic Archdiocese. This past Sunday they skyped their grandson’s wedding in California, viewing this in our Library, along with several co-residents. Social worker Nina calls this couple “Fine and Dandy,” and they certainly are.

Heidi Schrage Since joining our Weinberg Community family as parttime Leasing Associate a year ago, Heidi has become a valuable asset, while working side-by-side with Elaine Brody, who has been Leasing Associate since the inception of our community. Born in Williamstown MA, Heidi has traveled around the U.S. and the world, including Australia. Heidi graduated from De Pauw University in Indiana. She worked in Public Relations in Washington, DC, then for the Jewish Federation in Florida, moving to Melbourne Australia for six years. Heidi states that, in Melbourne, there are 60,000 Jews residing in proximity to one another. There are no Reform Congregations and one Conservative Synagogue—the remainder of the synagogues are either Modern or Traditional Orthodox or Hasidic. has traveled the world, USA and Australia, and finally to Buffalo Grove Heidi married her husband Mike in 2005 and both of her children were born in Australia. Their son Mason is 6 years old, and an up-and coming golfer and baseball player. His sister Sunny enjoys dance and song. These family members truly enjoy their time together. PJ, their German Shepard, completes the family, who have quickly become part of Buffalo Grove’s close-knit community. In addition to her position at Weinberg and family life, Heidi enjoys quilting, mahjong and running, having completed a half marathon and the Chicago Marathon. Heidi, is a wonderful to our staff, and a good friend to all!
