THE FOUNTAIN DOOR, WINDOW, STAIR Design 3 / 2013 / University of Florida

In my interpretation of Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain, I analyzed the use of light and the effects it had on the main character’s journey. The two main characters’ relationship is grounded by the metaphorical intersection of light and journey. Throughout the process work, I created a nested moment to represent the intersection, but transitioned to an open space in the final model. Light filters throughout the model in this space as the journey reaches the summit. The itinerary circulates around this space, and one is able to see glimpses of the light but cannot be fully submerged in it until the journey is complete.

004

Light is a recurring symbol throughout the film that signifies the transition as the main character searches for an answer to immortality to his acceptance of death. This transition into light and acceptance is not the product of a simple journey; rather, it is reached along an itinerary where I created options to move towards the light or down towards the dark. This embodies the main character’s decisions and turning points in the film where he changes the future in order to reach immortality. In these instances, he ultimately shifts away from the light and farther from being reunited with his wife.

ST. AUGUSTINE SITE ANALYSIS Design 4 / 2014 / University of Florida

This project was an intense

opening for the fourth semester, which began with a site visit to St. Augustine. of

The

project

consisted

both analytical mapping and

speculative thinking within a targeted study of the city. The exercises focused on preliminary analysis and mapping, followed by a more complex study and reconsideration of edge, boundary, threshold and scale. This process was iterative and concluded with a mapping study and physical model. i.

BARCELONA THE REVOLUTIONARY ASSEMBLAGE Design 3 / 2013 / University of Florida After investigating Barcelona’s loss of autonomy due to the Nova Planta Decrees of 1716 and struggle to regain it, I propose that Barcelona in is need of an extension from the Fossar de les Moreres plaza to the orthogonal grid structure of the city to bring about a revolutionary movement. The intervention consists of three spaces: a passage, a museum and a headquarters. These spaces are situated to bring the masses to the plaza and reunite the artifact, or the Decrees, with the memorial. I have surgically cut buildings

surrounding the existing alley leading to the plaza to propose a morphological transformation. The passage connecting Fossar de les Moreres with the Plaça de Catalunya is a horizontal space that leads to a vertical tower housing the artifact museum and nationalism headquarters. The passage begins with a large threshold to bring the masses into the space and constricts as the plaza nears. This mirrors the intimate scale of the Fossar plaza on one end while offering a contrast to the small scaled spaces characteristic of the Gothic Quarter on the other.
