Looking at Rheumatic Fever Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease that can develop as a complication of inadequately treated strep throat or scarlet fever. Strep throat and scarlet fever are caused by an infection with group A streptococcus bacteria. Rheumatic fever is most common in 5- to 15-year-old children, though it can develop in younger children and adults. Although strep throat is common, rheumatic fever is rare in developed countries. However, rheumatic fever remains common in many developing nations. Rheumatic fever can cause permanent damage to the heart, including damaged heart valves and heart failure. Treatment can reduce tissue damage from inflammation, can lessen pain and other symptoms, and prevent the recurrence of rheumatic fever.

8

Symptoms

Rheumatic fever symptoms may vary. Some people may have several symptoms, while others experience only a few. The symptoms may also change during the course of the disease. The onset of rheumatic fever usually occurs about two to four weeks after a strep throat infection.

• •

Rheumatic fever signs and symptoms — which result from inflammation in the heart, joints, skin or central nervous system — may include: • Fever • Painful and tender joints — most often the ankles, knees, elbows or wrists; less often the shoulders, hips, hands and feet

The Script Pharmacy Magazine │July 2014 • August 2014

• • • • •

Pain in one joint that migrates to another joint Red, hot or swollen joints Small, painless nodules beneath the skin Chest pain Heart murmur Fatigue Flat or slightly raised, painless rash with a ragged edge (erythema marginatum) Jerky, uncontrollable body movements (Sydenham chorea or St. Vitus’ dance) — most often in the hands, feet and face Outbursts of unusual behaviour, such as crying or inappropriate laughing, that accompanies Sydenham chorea

AWARENESS

Strep Throat Streptococcal pharyngitis, streptococcal tonsillitis, or streptococcal sore throat (known colloquially as strep throat) is a type of pharyngitis caused by a group A streptococcal infection. It affects the pharynx including the tonsils and possibly the larynx. Common symptoms include fever, sore throat, and enlarged lymph nodes. It is the cause of 37% of sore throats among children 2 to 5-15% in adults.

Scarlet Fever Scarlet fever (also called scarlatina in older literature)[1] is an infectious disease which most commonly affects children. Symptoms include sore throat, fever and a characteristic red rash. Scarlet fever is usually spread by inhalation. There is no vaccine, but the disease is effectively treated with antibiotics. Most of the clinical features are caused by erythrogenic toxin, a substance produced by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes (group A strep.) when it is infected by a certain bacteriophage.

When to see a doctor You should consult a doctor if you or your child signs or symptoms of strep throat. Proper treatment of strep can prevent rheumatic fever. Call your doctor if your child has any of the following signs or symptoms: • A sore throat without cold symptoms, such as a runny nose • A sore throat accompanied by tender, swollen lymph glands (nodes) • A red rash that starts on the head and neck, then expands to the trunk and extremities • Difficulty swallowing anything, including saliva • Thick or bloody discharge from the nose, which is more likely in children under 3 years of age • A bright red tongue with bumps all over it, known as strawberry tongue • Call your doctor about a fever in the following situations: • Newborns up to 3 months old with a fever of 38 C taken rectally • Children ages 3 to 6 months with a temperature of 38.9 C or higher • Children ages 6 months to 2 years with a fever of 38.9 C or higher that doesn’t respond to medication or lasts more than one day • Children ages 2 to 17 years with a fever of 38.9 C or higher (taken rectally for children younger than 3 and orally for children older than 3) that doesn’t respond to medication or lasts more than three days

Causes Rheumatic fever can occur after an infection of the throat with a bacterium called Streptococcus pyogenes, or group A streptococcus. Group A strep-

tococcus infections of the throat cause strep throat or, less commonly, scarlet fever. Group A streptococcus infections of the skin or other parts of the body rarely trigger rheumatic fever. The exact link between strep infection and rheumatic fever isn’t clear, but it appears that the bacterium “plays tricks” on the immune system. The strep bacterium contains a protein similar to one found in certain tissues of the body. Therefore, immune system cells that would normally target the bacterium may treat the body’s own tissues as if they were infectious agents — particularly tissues of the heart, joints, skin and central nervous system. This immune system reaction results in inflammation. If your child receives prompt and complete treatment with an antibiotic to eliminate strep bacteria — in other words, taking all doses of the medication as prescribed — there’s little to no chance of developing rheumatic fever. If your child has one or more episodes of strep throat or scarlet fever that aren’t treated or not treated completely, the risks for rheumatic fever increases.

risk of rheumatic fever is associated with overcrowding, poor sanitation and other conditions that may easily result in the rapid transmission or multiple exposures to strep bacteria. or she may — but won’t necessarily — develop rheumatic fever.

Complications • Inflammation caused by rheumatic

• • •

Factors that may increase the risk of rheumatic fever include: • Family history. Some people may

carry a gene or genes that make them more likely to develop rheumatic fever. Type of strep bacteria. Certain strains of strep bacteria are more likely to contribute to rheumatic fever than are other strains. Environmental factors. A greater

fever may last for a few weeks to several months. In some cases, the inflammation may cause long-term complications. Rheumatic heart disease is permanent damage to the heart caused by the inflammation of rheumatic fever. Problems are most common with the valve between the two left chambers of the heart (mitral valve), but the other valves may be affected. The damage may result in one of the following conditions: Valve stenosis. This condition is a narrowing of the valve, which results in decreased blood flow. Valve regurgitation. This condition is a leak in the valve, which allows blood to flow in the wrong direction. Damage to heart muscle. The inflammation associated with rheumatic fever can weaken the heart muscle, resulting in poor pumping function. Damage to the mitral valve, other heart valves or other heart tissues can cause problems with the heart later in life. Resulting conditions may include: Atrial fibrillation, an irregular and chaotic beating of the upper chambers of the heart (atria) Heart failure, an inability of the heart to pump enough blood to the body

What can I do?

MANDELA DAY 2014 Mandela Day is a call to action for individuals – for people everywhere – to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as the late Mr Mandela did for more than 67 years. Become A Mandela Day Changemaker

Share Your Mandela Day Deed

Change was the gift given to all South Africans by the late Mr Nelson Mandela. Now it’s YOUR turn. In the spirit of Madiba and his vision to spread justice and freedom for all, this is your chance to step up to the plate and become a part of a continuous global movement for good. By becoming a Mandela Day Changemaker you can show that actions speak louder than words by giving a little of your time to make a change that’s close to your heart. (or by giving a little of your time to make a difference to the life of someone less fortunate.)

Honour the life and legacy of the late Mr Mandela by making your “Mandela deed” part of history. Visit the Mandela Day Activities to pledge your support and let us know how you plan to commemorate the day. Then document your act of kindness on Mandela Day and share it with the world.

Spread The Word Mandela Day is a celebration of our collective power to do good and make an imprint on the world. You can add to the initiative’s momentum by telling as many people as possible about

it. Use your own network of friends, media connections, corporates and organisations to get involved and make a difference.

67 Ways To Change The World Think of others 1. Make a new friend. Get to know someone from a different cultural background. Only through mutual understanding can we rid our communities of intolerance and xenophobia. 2. Read to someone who can’t. Visit a local home for the blind and open up a new world for someone else. 3. Fix the potholes in your street or

Donate indigenous trees to beautify neighbourhoods in poorer areas. 63. Collect old newspapers from a school/community centre/hospital and take them to a recycling centre. 64. Identify open manhole covers or drains in your area and report them to the local authorities. 65. Organise the company/school/organisation that you work with to switch off all unnecessary lights and power supplies at night and on weekends. 66. Less Brrr, MORE MMM this Winter! Biltong and Avocado Pizza Recipe In the mood for something different? How about a yummy pizza topped with South Africa’s favorite snack! Ingredients: Makes two large pizzas. Dough: • 7 1/2 cups (800 g) plain flour • Large pinch of salt • 1 tsp sugar • 3 tbsp olive oil • ± 2 cups lukewarm water • 1 packet instant yeast Topping: • 2 onions, finely sliced • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp butter • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 x 410 g can Rhodes Tomato, Basil and Origanum • 1 cup (100 g) biltong, sliced • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, grated • Two handfuls rocket • 2 tsp olive oil • 2 avocados, peeled and sliced Method: 1. Sift the flour, salt and sugar into a large bowl. 2. Using the dough hook of an electric mixer, or a wooden spoon if you are doing it by hand, pour in about ¾ of the water and work the mixture into a soft, firm dough. 3. Add more water if necessary until your dough is soft and can knead easily without sticking to the bowl or your hand. (If your dough is too tacky

14

you may have added too much water and in that case add little bits of flour until it no longer sticks). 4. Knead the dough until it is elastic and smooth. 5. Form into a ball and place in a floured bowl. 6. Cover with a damp cloth and place in a warm spot to rise. 7. While the dough is rising prepare the onions by cooking them slowly in the olive oil and the butter till fragrant and soft. 8. Season the onions well and set aside. 9. When the dough has doubled in size, knock it down with your fist and knead again. 10. Divide into two equal balls and roll out for your pizzas. 11. Place the rolled out pizza base on a lightly floured baking tray or pizza stone. 12. Spread each pizza with ½ can Rhodes Tomato, Basil and Origanum. 13. Divide the cooked onions between the two pizzas. 14. Share the biltong between the two pizzas. 15. Generously sprinkle each pizza with 1 cup of grated mozzarella cheese. 16. Bake in a preheated oven at 200˚C for about 20 – 25 minutes until golden, crispy and delicious. 17. Toss the rocket with the olive oil and arrange together with the slices of avocado on top of the pizza.

Beef and beer stew A saucy rich stew - perfect for winter. Ingredients: Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 1.5 hrs • 3 tbsp butter • 550 g stewing beef pieces, patted dry with paper towels • 2 medium onions, sliced • 2 tbsp flour • 2 bay leaves, preferably fresh • 4 medium cloves garlic, sliced • 500 ml beer • 1/2 tsp demerara/ brown sugar • 1/2 tsp chilli flakes • salt and pepper to taste Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C . 2. In a pot on the stove, melt the butter on medium heat. Add the beef and brown on both sides 3. Remove beef and set aside. 4. Add onions and lower heat – you want the onions to be pale and soft. This gives an aromatic backbone to the dish and is less sweet than caramelising onions. 5. This will take a good while, so it’s a good time to clean and slice the garlic. But do watch the pot. 6. Add the flour and cook until a biscuit colour, stirring regularly. 7. Add beer, garlic, bay leaves, sugar, chilli and stir. It will sizzle delightfully and then settle. 8. Add beef and any juices and season to taste. 9. Remove from heat, seal pot with

Ingredients: • 1 kg venison shoulder or leg, cubed • 200 g bacon, cut into thin strips • 3 cups (about 750 ml) good quality dry red wine • 1 tsp (5 ml) ground cinnamon • 6 whole cloves (wrapped in a muslin bag) • ¼ tsp (1 ml) ground ginger • Pinch of saffron (optional) • 2 Tbsp (30 ml) lamb’s tail fat or oil • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 onion, chopped • 1 cup (250 ml) dried peaches • 2 Tbsp (30 ml) brown sugar • 8 cups (2 litres) venison, beef or lamb stock or water • 1 buttermilk pastry • Milk, for brushing • Freshly ground sea salt Method: 1. Place the venison, bacon, wine, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and saffron (if using) in an earthenware dish and marinate overnight. 2. The following day, preheat the oven to 160°C (325°F). 3. Use a large, heavy-based casse-

role dish with a tight fitting lid that can also be used on the stovetop, heat it and add the fat, lard or oil. 4. Remove the venison and bacon from the marinade (reserve the marinade) and pat dry with paper towel. Season with the salt and pepper and brown in the fat, lard or oil. 5. Add the onion and fry for 5 minutes. 6. Add the peaches, sugar, reserved marinade and stock. Cover with the lid and place in the oven for 2-3 hours until soft. 7. Remove the dish from the oven and place on the stove and cook until the sauce thickens. To aid thickening, add a little cornflour mixed with water. 8. Check seasoning and leave to cool in the pot. 9. Increase the oven temperature to 200°C (400°F). 10. Placed the pastry on a lightly floured surface and roll out to a thickness of 11. 2 cm. Make sure the rolled pastry is large enough to cover the top of the casserole pot. Place on top of the meat, covering the whole surface. Alternatively you can make little balls of pastry and place them tightly next to each other on top of the meat. 12. Brush the surface with the milk and sprinkle with feshly ground sea salt. Bake for about 45 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

Sago Melkkos with Custard Sago pudding is a traditional Afrikaans dessert perfect for the cold winter months. Imagine combining it with another favourite, Melkkos! Serve it with custard. Ingredients: • 200g sago (1 c) • 2.5 liters milk (10 c) • 2 eggs • 60 ml water (¼ c) • 30 g custard powder (4 T) • 2 ml salt (½ t) • 15 ml butter/margarine (1 T) • cinnamon sugar Method: 13. Soak the sago in the milk for about an hour. Gradually bring the mixture to the boil over moderate heat, using a heavy based saucepan. Stir it quite often in order to prevent burning and simmer until the sago is soft and transparent. 14. Separate the eggs. Beat together the egg yolks, water, custard powder and salt until there are no clumps. Add the custard mixture to the milk mixture and simmer until thick, stirring often. Add the butter/ margarine. 15. Beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Stir a little of the stiffly beaten egg white into the hot melkos until mixed. Then lightly fold the remaining egg white into the mixture, using a metal spoon. Pour the custard melkkos into a heat proof serving dish, sprinkle lavishly with cinnamon sugar and serve immediately. Makes 2,5 litres (10 cups) of melkkos.

MODULE 3

Hepatitis

Welcome to the third CPD module. Continuous education programmes are important to keep you up to date with new developments and can form a significant element of your CPD portfolio. Record your learning and upload it on the SAPC website.

PDA continuing professional development programme This section is suitable for use by pharmacists, pharmacist assistants and front shop staff as part of their continuing professional development. After reading this, complete the learning scenarios at the end of this module.

Welcome to Module 3: About Hepatitis

PDA wishes to congratulate the top performer in the assessment for the first CPD module, Ilse Gregory from Delmas Pharmacy! She was the only student to score 100% for the assessment and received the R250 voucher. Well done, Ilse!!

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by a viral infection. There are five main hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E. These five types are of greatest concern because of the burden of illness and death they cause and the potential for outbreaks and epidemic spread.

About this module Objectives: At the end of this module, you should be able to: • Name the five main types of Hepatitis and also the pathogens that cause each type. • List the main symptoms of each of the discussed types of hepatitis. • Discuss the main preventative measures for the discussed types of hepatitis.

CPD Module

HEATLH TOPIC

Hepatitis In particular, types B and C lead to chronic disease in hundreds of millions of people and, together, are the most common cause of liver cirrhosis and cancer.

infection may occur with limited or no symptoms, or may include symptoms such as jaundice, dark urine, extreme fatigue, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Hepatitis A and E are typically caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B, C and D usually occur as a result of parenteral contact with infected body fluids. Common modes of transmission for these viruses include receipt of contaminated blood or blood products, invasive medical procedures using contaminated equipment and for hepatitis B transmission from mother to baby at birth, from family member to child, and also by sexual contact. Acute

The liver

Definitions and Terminology JAUNDICE: Yellowish discoloration of the whites of the eyes, skin, or mucous membranes caused by the deposition of bile salts in these tissues, occurring as a sign of disorders that interfere with normal metabolism or transport of bile. Liver diseases such as hepatitis commonly cause jaundice. MORTALITY: the relative frequency of deaths in a specific population; also called death rate.

The liver is the largest gland in the body and weighs approximately 1.5 kilograms. A normal liver is reddish brown in colour and consists of four lobes of different sizes and lengths. The liver has the following functions: •

Detoxification (filters harmful substances, such as alcohol from the blood)

Stores vitamins A, D, K and B12 (also stores minerals)

Protein synthesis (makes certain amino acids - the building blocks of proteins)

The production of biochemicals needed for digestion, such as bile

Maintains proper levels of glucose in the blood

Produces 80% of your body’s cholesterol (cholesterol is vital for health) The storage of glycogen (also converts glucose to glycogen) Decomposes red blood cells Synthesis plasma protein The production of hormones Produces urea (the main substance of urine).

THE LIVER

Hepatitis A Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. The virus is primarily spread when an uninfected (and unvaccinated) person ingests food or water that is contaminated with the faeces of an infected person. The disease is closely associated with a lack of safe water, inadequate sanitation and poor personal hygiene. Unlike hepatitis B and C, hepatitis A infection does not cause chronic liver disease and is rarely fatal, but it can cause debilitating symptoms and fulminant hepatitis (acute liver failure), which is associated with high mortality. Signs and symptoms Symptoms of hepatitis A range from mild to severe, and can include fever, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark-coloured urine and jaundice. Not everyone who is infected will have all of the symptoms. Adults have signs and symptoms more often than children and the severity of disease and mortality increases in older age groups. Infected children under six years of age do not usually experience noticeable

www.pdacademy.co.za

symptoms, and only 10% develop jaundice. Among older children and adults, infection usually causes more severe symptoms, with jaundice occurring in more than 70% of cases.

liver cancer.

Who is at risk?

A vaccine against hepatitis B has been available since 1982. The vaccine is 95% effective in preventing infection and its chronic consequences.

Anyone who has not been vaccinated or previously infected can contract hepatitis A. Risk factors include: • poor sanitation • lack of safe water • injecting drugs • living in a household with an infected person • being a sexual partner of someone with acute hepatitis A infection • travelling to areas of high endemicity without being immunized.

More than 240 million people have chronic (long-term) liver infections. About 600 000 people die every year due to the acute or chronic consequences of hepatitis B.

Signs and symptoms Hepatitis B virus can cause an acute illness with symptoms that last several weeks, including jaundice, dark urine, extreme fatigue, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In some people, the hepatitis B virus

Who is at risk? Hepatitis B can be contracted by having unsafe sex, sharing unsterile piercing or injecting drug equipment, or engaging in other activities where the blood or body fluids of an infected person enters the bloodstream of an uninfected person. The virus may also be passed from a pregnant mother to her baby. In about 30 to 40 per cent of cases, infections occur without a known cause. Prevention The hepatitis B vaccine is the mainstay of hepatitis B prevention. WHO recommends that all infants receive the hepatitis B vaccine as soon as possible after birth.

Prevention

Who should be vaccinated? • All infants at birth and and children 18 years and younger • All healthcare professionals and emergency personnel • Sexually active teens and adults • Homosexual individuals • Family members living with an infected person • Travellers traveling to countries where

Improved sanitation, food safety and immunization are the most effective ways to combat hepatitis A.

Hepatitis B Hepatitis B is a potentially life-threatening liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus. It can cause chronic liver disease and chronic infection and puts people at high risk of death from cirrhosis of the liver and

can also cause a chronic liver infection that can later develop into cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer.

CPD Module

Signs and symptoms

hepatitis B is common • Patients with kidney diseases or undergoing dialyses • Any other person who may fall into the high risk group Hepatitis C Hepatitis C infection is an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis C virus. Hepatitis C is extremely small, even for a virus - it is only about 50 nanometres in diameter. A nanometre is one billionth of a meter. Globally, about 150 million people are chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus, and more than 350 000 people die every year from Hepatitis C related liver diseases.

There are two types of Hepatitis C – acute and chronic. Individuals with acute Hepatitis C usually do not manifest symptoms and the small percentage that do (25 to 35 percent) will experience symptoms similar to the other cases of acute hepatitis, including flu-like symptoms, joint aches or mild skin rash. Individuals that are particularly likely to experience a severe course of Hepatitis C are those individuals that already have Hepatitis B and become infected with acute Hepatitis C. Other symptoms which may be experienced by individuals with acute Hepatitis C are: • Loss of appetite • Abdominal pain • Dark urine • Grey colour stool • Jaundice Who is at risk? The hepatitis C virus is a blood-borne virus. It is most commonly transmitted through: • injecting drug use through the sharing of injection equipment; • in health care settings due to the reuse or inadequate sterilization of medical equipment, especially syringes and needles;

Yellowing of the whites of the eyes could be an indication of jaundice

• in some countries, HCV is transmitted via the transfusion of unscreened blood and

blood products; • HCV can also be transmitted sexually, and can be passed from an infected mother to her baby; however these modes are less common. Hepatitis C is not spread through breast milk, food or water or by casual contact such as hugging, kissing and sharing food or drinks with an infected person. Prevention There is no vaccine for hepatitis C, therefore prevention of hepatitis C infection depends upon reducing the risk of exposure to the virus in health-care settings.

Women’s

MONTH Call for National Council Against GBV

With the 16 Days of Activism campaign against the abuse of women and children under way, Gender Links has called on the government to set up and provide a substantive budget for a National Council to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa. The body would be a high-level, multisector council modelled on the South African National Aids Council chaired by former Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe. Gender Links also urged local govern-

28

ments to allocate financial resources for awareness raising and prevention initiatives based on the findings from the research.

“Advocacy programmes must be targeted at changing women’s and men’s attitudes towards gender relations,” the organisation said in a statement last week. “Engaging men and youth in the fight to reduce levels of gender-based violence cannot be underrated.”

Gender violence ‘a reality in South Africa’ According to Gender Links’ research, 77% percent of women in Limpopo

province, 51% of women in Gauteng, 45% of women in the Western Cape and 36% of women in KwaZulu-Natal have experienced some form of violence (emotional, economic, physical or sexual) in their lifetime, both within and outside intimate relationships. A higher proportion of men in Gauteng (76%) and KwaZulu-Natal (41%) admitted to perpetrating violence against women in their lifetime, while a slightly lower proportion of men - compared to the proportion of women reporting GBV - said they perpetrated GBV in Limpopo (48%) and Western Cape (35%), the research found.

“Comparing what women say they experience to what men say they do confirms that gender violence is a reality in South Africa,” Gender Links said. According to the research, the majority of violence reported occurred within women and men’s private lives, with 51% percent of women in Gauteng, 51% in Limpopo, 44% in the Western Cape and 29% in KwaZulu-Natal reporting having experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetime. “The low prevalence of GBV reported by women in KwaZulu-Natal is indicative of an even bigger problem that women may not be openly disclosing their experiences,” Gender Links said.

Gender violence in public life However, women are also vulnerable to violence in public life, the research found, with 12% of women in Gauteng, 6% in the Western Cape, 5% in Limpopo and 5% in KwaZulu-Natal reporting having experienced nonpartner rape in their lifetime. “The proportion of men reporting rape perpetration in the four provinces is significantly higher than the proportion of women reporting experience,” Gender Links said. “In Gauteng, 31% of men admitted to having raped a woman at least once in their lifetime.” Over half (59%) of women in Limpopo, 5% in KwaZulu Natal, 5% in the Western Cape, and 2.7% in Gauteng who had ever worked reported having been sexually harassed. “They disclosed that a man either hinted or threatened that they would lose their job if they did not have sex with him; or they would have to have sex with him in order to get a job.” Almost two-thirds (65.9%) of women in Limpopo, 2% KwaZulu-Natal, 1.4% in Gauteng, and 1.2% in the Western Cape who had attended school said they had experienced sexual harassment at school.

Limpopo province “The extremely high prevalence of sexual harassment in the workplace

and at school in Limpopo province warrants further research,” Gender Links said, adding that the Limpopo research showed women in the province suffering from violence related to witch-hunting. “This occurs when communities blame deaths, or sicknesses or other misfortunes in their community on witchcraft ... Those accused experience multiple effects including emotional trauma, injury, being forced to leave home or relocate, and loss or damage to property. Communities continue to unite in plans to exterminate women suspected of witchcraft.” In the Western Cape, the research shows that women are being forced or initiated into drug-taking by their intimate partners. At times, drug intake becomes an effect, as abused women attempt to escape the trauma that comes with gender violence.

Reactionary attitudes ‘fuelling violence’ “In KwaZulu-Natal, women are not speaking out about gender violence,” the organisation notes. “Generally literacy levels are low, thus knowledge on the forms of abuse, women’s rights and where to get help barely reaches these women. They actually uphold and affirm patriarchy.” The research indicates that reactionary attitudes and beliefs in communities fuel the incidences of genderbased violence, with high proportions of women and men agreeing that a woman should obey her husband. “However, the proportion of women agreeing to the notion of wife obedience in each of the sites is lower than men’s, showing that women are slightly more progressive than men.” Gender Links said the research findings provided “invaluable evidence required to review the 365 Day South African National Action Plan to End GBV,” noting that a report released by the Commission on Gender Equality last week found that “government efforts towards implementing the plan have been fragmented and lacked a dedicated budget”. SA firms ‘aiming to hire more women’ South African businesses are among the leaders when it comes to planning to hire more women this year, according to the 2013 Grant Thornton International Business Report on women in business, released last year. It found that only 28% of senior management positions in South Africa were filled by women, and that this statistic had been static since 2009. This is not unique to South Africa, though, as the global average has also stayed static at 24%. “These stats indicate an urgent need for change,” partner and head of corporate finance at Grant Thornton Johannesburg, Jeanette Hern, said in a statement. “However, when SA businesses were asked whether they would support the introduction of quotas to legislate for more women on executive boards of large listed companies, it is pleasing to note that 60% of SA businesses surveyed said they would support the quota system.” The South African government is also committed to improving female representation through the Gender Equality and Women Empowerment Bill, which was approved by Cabinet for public comment in August 2012.‘Seeking equal representation of women’ The report also showed an improvement in the number of South African women in chief financial officer positions. “Women chief financial officers in SA more than doubled this year compared to 2012, up 128% from 14% to 32%,” the report said. “This steady improvement - although still small at this stage - may fare well for us in the long term - the number of accomplished women in CFO positions could just be the launch pad for women achieving a greater presence at a corporate board level,” Hern said. The report highlighted a need to change the approach to hiring women; suggestions included more flexible working hours, compressed work weeks, part-year work and flexi leave arrangements.

20 Tricks

THAT CAN MAKE ANYONE AN EXCEL EXPERT TECHNOLOGY BY LIZA BROWN After Microsoft developed Excel to the 2010 version, it offered more surprises than ever. In order to deal with tons of big data, you can’t ignore the important role Excel plays in daily work. However, both for beginners and advanced users, there are still many useful tips and tricks that are inevitably overlooked. Here are 20 useful Excel spreadsheet secrets you may not know. Please note that all these functions are based on Microsoft Excel 2010.

1. One Click to Select All You might know how to select all by using the Ctrl + A shortcut, but few know that with only one click of the corner button, as shown in the screenshot below, all data will be selected in seconds.

2. Open Excel Files in Bulk Rather than open files one by one when you have multiple files you need to handle, there is a handy way to open them all with one click. Select the files you would like to open then press the 30

Enter key on the keyboard, all files will open simultaneously.

3. Shift Between Different Excel Files When you have different spreadsheets open, it’s really annoying shifting between different files because sometimes working on the wrong sheet can ruin the whole project. Using Ctrl + Tab you can shift between different files freely. This function is also applicable to other files like different Windows tabs in Firefox when opened using Windows 7.

4. Create a New Shortcut Menu Generally there are three shortcuts in the top menu, which are Save, Undo Typing and Repeat Typing. However, if you want to use more shortcuts, like Copy and Cut, you can set them up as follows: File->Options->Quick Access Toolbar, add Cut and Copy from the left column to the right, save it. You will see two more shortcuts added in the top menu.

The Script Pharmacy Magazine │July 2014 • August 2014

5. Add a Diagonal Line to a Cell When creating a classmate address list, for example, you may need a diagonal link in the first cell to separate different attributes of rows and columns. How to make it? Everyone knows that Home->Font-> Borders can change different borders for a cell, and even add different colors. However, if you click More Borders, you will get more surprises, like a diagonal line. Click it and save—you can now make it immediately.

6. Add More Than One New Row or Column You may know the way to add one new row or column, but it really wastes a lot of time if you need to insert more than one of these by repeating this action X number of times. The best way is to drag and select X rows or columns (X is two or more) if you want to add X rows or columns above or left. Right click the highlighted rows or columns and choose Insert from the drop down menu. New rows will be inserted above the row or to the left of the column you first selected.

SKILLS

7. Speedily Move and Copy Data in Cells

why it is recommended to copy to another location.

If you want to move one column of data in a spreadsheet, the fast way is to choose it and move the pointer to the border, after it turns to a crossed arrow icon, drag to move the column freely. What if you want to copy the data? You can press the Ctrl button before you drag to move; the new column will copy all the selected data.

11. Input Restriction with Data Validation Function

8. Speedily Delete Blank Cells Some default data will be blank, for various reasons. If you need to delete these to maintain accuracy, especially when calculating the average value, the speedy way is to filter out all blank cells and delete them with one click. Choose the column you want to filter, go to Data->Filter, after the downward button shows, undo Select All and then pick up the last option, Blanks. All blank cells will show immediately. Go back to Home and click Delete directly, all of them will be removed.

9. Vague Search with Wild Card You may know how to activate the speedy search by using the shortcut Ctrl + F, but there are two main wild cards—Question Mark and Asterisk— used in Excel spreadsheets to activate a vague search. This is used when you are not sure about the target result. Question Mark stands for one character and Asterisk represents one or more characters. What if you need to search Question Mark and Asterisk as a target result? Don’t forget add a Wave Line in front.

10. Generate a Unique Value in a Column You are aware of the key function of Filter, but few people use the Advanced Filter, which will be repeatedly applied when you need to filter a unique value from data in a column. Click to choose the column and go to Data->Advanced. A pop-up window will show up. As the screenshot shows, click Copy to another location, which should be in accord with the second red rectangular area. Then specify the target location by typing the value or clicking the area-choosing button. In this example, the unique age can be generated from Column C and show in Column E. Don’t forget to choose Unique records only, then click OK. The unique value showing in column E can be the contrast of the original data in C, that’s the reason

In order to retain the validity of data, sometimes you need to restrict the input value and offer some tips for further steps. For example, age in this sheet should be whole numbers and all people participating in this survey should be between 18 and 60 years old. To ensure that data outside of this age range isn’t entered, go to Data->Data Validation->Setting, input the conditions and shift to Input Message to give prompts like, “Please input your age with whole number, which should range from 18 to 60.” Users will get this prompt when hanging the pointer in this area and get a warning message if the inputted information is unqualified.

12. Fast Navigation with Ctrl + Arrow Button

You can compose any text freely with this symbol. Below I have four columns with different texts, but what if I want to compose them to one value in one cell? First, locate the cell that is to show the composed result, use the formulation with & as shown in the screenshot below. Click Enter: all texts in A2, B2, C2 and D2 will be composed together to become LizaUSA25@ in F2.+

16. Transforming the Case of Text With all the tricks shared here, I’ve tried my best to avoid complicated formulation. But there are still some simple and easy to use formulations to show you, like UPPER, LOWER and PROPER, which can transform texts for different purposes. UPPER will capitalize all characters, LOWER can change text to all lower case and PROPER will only capitalize the first character of a word.

17. Input Values Starting with 0

When you click Ctrl + any arrow button on the keyboard, you can jump to the edge of the sheet in different directions. If you want to jump to the bottom line of the data, just try to click Ctrl + downward button.

When an input value starts with zero, Excel will delete the zero by default. Rather than reset the Format Cells, this problem can be easily solved by adding a single quote mark ahead of the first zero, as shown.

13. Transpose Data from a Row to a Column

18. Speed up Inputting Complicated Terms with AutoCorrect

You would use this feature if you want to transpose data to get a better display; however, retyping all data would be the last thing you would need to do if you know how to use the Transpose function in Paste. Here’s how: copy the area you want to transpose, move the pointer to another blank location. Go to Home->Paste->Transpose, please note that this function won’t activate until you copy the data first.

14. Hide Data Thoroughly Almost all users know how to hide data by right clicking to select the Hide function, but this can be easily noticed if there is only a little bit of data. The best and easiest way to hide data thoroughly is to use the Format Cells function. Choose the area and go to Home->Font->Open Format Cells>Number Tab->Custom->Type ;;; -> Click OK, then all the values in the area will be invisible, and can only be found in the preview area next to the Function button.

15. Compose Text with & Complicated formulation is unnecessary, as long as you know how to use &.

If you need to repeat the same value and it is complicated to input, the best way is to use the AutoCorrect function, which will replace your text with the correct text. Take my name, Liza Brown, for example, which can be replaced by LZ. Therefore, every time I input LZ, it can autocorrect to Liza Brown. Go to File->Options->Proofing->AutoCorrect Options and input Replace text with correct text in the red rectangular area, as below.

19. One Click to Get More Status Most users know how to check the data status in the bottom of an Excel sheet, like Average and Sum Value. However, do you know you can move the pointer to the bottom tab and right click to get more status, as shown below?

20. Rename a Sheet Using Double Click There are multiple ways to rename sheets, and most users will right click to choose Rename, which actually wastes a lot of time. The best way is to just click twice, then you can rename it directly. http://www.lifehack.org/

Once the POD has been signed, NO CREDIT can be passed for any delayed claims for damaged or short boxes / parcels. 7. Please take note that the absence of a tick, or a cross, next to the undelivered invoice number cannot suffice as a proper endorsement 8. As a final check we suggest that you do a count of all the boxes and parcels that were delivered and balance that back to the quantities indicated on the POD. 9. It is regretted that we cannot entertain credits for boxes not delivered, unless the POD is endorsed accordingly We trust that the suggestions will enable both parties to solely rely on the POD in case of any future discrepancies or claims.
