How cold is too cold?
Hypothermia is a potentially dangerous drop in body temperature, usually caused by prolonged exposure to cold temperatures. The risk of cold exposure increases as the winter months arrive, but it is not only hikers on their way to Everest that are at risk. Hypothermia is caused when the balance between the body's heat production and heat loss tips toward heat loss for a prolonged period. Accidental hypothermia usually happens after cold temperature exposure without enough warm, dry clothing for protection. However, much milder environments can also lead to hypothermia, depending on a person's age, body mass, body fat, overall health, and length of time exposed to cold temperatures. A frail, older adult in a cold old age home can develop hypothermia overnight. Infants and babies sleeping in cold bedrooms are also at risk.
Hypothermia symptoms for adults include:
Hypothermia symptoms for infants include: • Cold-to-touch, bright red skin • Unusually low energy If medical care isn't immediately available: • Remove any wet clothes, hats, gloves, shoes, and socks • Protect the person against wind, drafts, and further heat loss with warm, dry clothes and blankets • Move gently to a warm, dry shelter as soon as possible • Begin rewarming the person with extra clothing. Use warm blankets. Other helpful items for warming are:
an electric blanket to the torso area and hot packs and heating pad on the torso, armpits, neck, and groin, however, these can cause burns to the skin. Use your own body heat if nothing else is available • Take the person's temperature if a thermometer is available • Offer warm liquids, but avoid alcohol and caffeine, which speed up heat loss. Don't try to give fluids to an unconscious person If the hypothermic person is unconscious, or has no pulse or signs of breathing, call for emergency help right away. CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) should be given immediately. Because hypothermia causes the body to shut down in ways that mimic death, CPR should be continued, even in the absence of SCAN TO signs of breathing DOWNLOAD or a pulse, until THIS PROMOTION paramedics arrive or the person is taken to a hospital. Look after your family, esp ecially if you have grandparents in old age homes and small children at day care centres. Ensure that these places are adequately equipped to deal with the winter and extra cold conditions.
People at increased risk for hypothermia include: • The elderly, infants, and children without adequate heating, clothing, or food • Mentally ill people who cannot look after themselves • People who are outdoors for extended periods • People in cold weather whose judgment is impaired by alcohol or drugs
• Shivering, which may stop as hypothermia progresses. (Shivering is actually a good sign that a person's heat regulation systems are still active) • Slow, shallow breathing • Confusion and memory loss • Drowsiness or exhaustion • Slurred or mumbled speech • Loss of coordination, fumbling hands, stumbling steps • A slow, weak pulse • In severe hypothermia, a person may be unconscious without signs of breathing or a pulse

About the reoccurrence of polio In May of this year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a warning regarding the spread of polio to three countries. Polio, a potentially fatal disease, was well on its way to extinction following a 25 year eradication process. The concern is that it is currently a low transmission period and still cases of this disease are being reported. Pakistan, Syria and Cameroon were urged to put measures into place while health experts believe that travelers are making it more difficult to control the spread.
Keep your child busy this winter holiday
What is polio?
Many parents are grateful for the winter holiday season, purely because they dread each morning when they must send their children to school in the bitter cold. On the other hand though, three weeks can become endless when your children get bored at home and then become irritable. Older children can entertain themselves, although it is still recommended that an adult keeps an eye on them. Sitting in front of the computer or television the whole day or hanging out in shopping malls also has limits. Keep your children safe at all time. You should always know where they are or what they are doing. If you have smaller children, here are a few tips for the upcoming holiday season: • Choose one room in the house where they can be themselves without the expectation that that space should always be neat and tidy. Yes, at the end of the day, they can clean up, but during the day’s activities, they should feel comfortable in that space. • Ensure that you have enough healthy snacks
at home – typically the same food that you would have prepared for their lunch boxes – so that you do not need to drive to the store every day. • If possible, take a few days’ leave and spend time with your children. Before your realize, they will be adults themselves and you will regret not being there when they were still dependent on you. Nothing in the world, not even your career, can compensate for that. Some activities for the children: • Teach them a craft which is cheap, easy to master and suited for both boys and girls, such as French knitting or ‘tolletjiebrei’. The Internet is packed with ‘how to’ videos and information on any craft you can think of. • Ask them to wash their toys and clean their rooms. More often than not, they will come across a toy they haven’t played with for a
while and that will keep them busy for a few hours more. • Allow them to help in the kitchen and give them something easy to bake or create such as a bowl of two-minute noodles with toppings of their choice or baking bread with readymade dough. They can shape it anyway they like. • Let them create their own life story. Provide them with craft materials and old family pictures and let them cut and paste till their ‘book’ is complete. • Plan a treasure hunt where they can find food and snacks to eventually have a picnic. Visit the internet for more ideas on how to keep your child busy. Also, talk to your pharmacist about vitamin supplements as the winter can take its toll on small bodies. Protect them with proper hygiene and healthy food.
We have proof! Japie Visser Pharmacy: serving the community for many years . We came across the attached invoice found in Japie Visser Pharmacy in Polokwane – a bit of history on a
small piece of paper. It was an invoice made out to a Mr Duvenage 56 years ago. Believe it or not, but the pharmacy is even older than that! Notice the products on the slip – they are still on the market today.

Polimyelitis is caused by a virus. Currently there is no treatment available and vaccination is the only way it could be prevented. The virus is found in the digestive system and is transferred orally and through the airway. The virus lands in the digestive system, spreads to the lymph glands and a small percentage goes to the central nervous system where it causes paralysis. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, nausea and painful muscles. The latter can cause paralysis. Patients, whose immune systems are compromised, must receive precautionary treatment. If treatment is administered incorrectly, it could cause polio. What are the reasons for the occurrence of the virus at this point in time? In Africa and countries like India polio was never totally eradicated. It still causes sporadic outbreaks. Inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene provides favourable circumstances for the spread of the Poliomyelitis virus. Therefore, wash your hands regularly and teach your children to do the same especially at public places such as schools and sports grounds. Vaccinations Prevention can only be done before exposure to the virus. There are two types of vaccinations, namely:1. Oral administration of the medication that is placed on the tongue. This is a live vaccine and must be administered with care and taking the current health condition of the patient into consideration. 2. The second one is an inactive vaccine and is administered by means of an injection. Polio vaccine administration is part of the immunization schedule as recommended by the Department of Health. Polio mostly affects children to the age of five and if you followed the immunisation schedule meticulously, your child is protected. Currently, there is no need to panic and although vaccines were out of stock, there should be ample available in July. However, if you have concerns, please contact your nearest Leading nursing practitioner or pharmacist.
