Take care of your smile, take care of your body Many of us dread a visit to the dentist. However, visiting a dentist is more than just a dental check-up. It is an investment in overall health. We all know by now how important brushing your teeth and flossing is. Sticky bacterial plaque that builds up on your teeth and that are not properly removed, will cause gum disease. There are degrees of gum disease and if detected early, it can be managed at home. However, if inflamed and bleeding gums cause your gums to retract or your teeth to fall out, it is a serious problem and you should visit your dentist as a matter of urgency. Research has found that bacteria and inflammation in the mouth are also linked to other health problems, including heart attacks and dementia, and may well jeopardize your overall health. To date, scientists have found links between gum disease and a number of other problems, including: • heart disease • diabetes • dementia • rheumatoid arthritis • premature birth Gum disease and heart disease In 2009, a paper on the relationship between heart and gum disease was published by the American Academy of Periodontology and The American Journal of Cardiology. The joint recommendations in this paper encourage cardiologists
to ask their patients about any gum disease problems, and the periodontists to ask their patients about any family history of heart disease and their heart health. Gum disease and diabetes Diabetics are more likely than people who don't have diabetes to suffer from gum disease. Why? Again, inflammation may be partly to blame. Diabetics are also more likely to contract infections, including gum disease. If your diabetes is not under control, you are at even higher risk of gum disease. How do I know if I have gum disease? Symptoms of gum disease include: • Persistent bad breath • Red or swollen gums • Tender or bleeding gums • Painful chewing • Loose teeth • Sensitive teeth • Receding gums or longer appearing teeth Any of these symptoms may be a sign of a serious problem, which should be checked by a dentist. Ask your pharmacist about oral hygiene products: Talk to your pharmacist about toothbrushes, mouthwashes and specially formulated toothpastes that can assist you in the fight against gum disease.

9 September:
International Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Day Foetal Alcohol Syndrome or FAS describes children who have growth deficiencies, mental retardation as well as physical and central nervous system abnormalities as a result of their mothers’ alcohol intake during pregnancy. The effects of FAS are permanent and irreversible and there is no cure or treatment. FAS seriously impairs a child's lifetime ability to function mentally, physically and socially and to achieve his/her full potential. Experts believe that between one and two-thirds of all children with special educational needs were affected by their mothers’ alcohol intake during
pregnancy. South Africa has one of the highest incidences of FAS globally. Ironically FAS is the most common preventable form of intellectual disability in the world, but continues to be a serious public health problem. Although some studies suggest that women should be able to enjoy one or two glasses of wine – one or two units – once or twice a week without harming their unborn child, there is still no conclusive evidence that a limited amount of alcohol is harmless. In fact, drinking any more than 10g of alcohol a day – just over half a unit – substantially increased the risk of developing FAS, the researchers
revealed to the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Women who drank 30g a day – about one and a half glasses of wine – raised the chance of the foetus being underdeveloped or of going into labour prematurely by nearly a 25%. If you are pregnant or know someone who is, ensure that you are all up to speed in terms of the effects of alcohol on your unborn baby. Visit our clinics for advice, not only about FAS, but about anything pertaining to your pregnancy and or baby. In the meantime, if you are pregnant, do not use any alcohol!

Pharmacy Week:
the role your community pharmacist plays Being a pharmacist is more than merely the dispensing of medicine. In fact, community pharmacists are committed to patient-focused health care. In celebrating Pharmacy Week, we focus on the functions of a pharmacist. A pharmacist: • Promotes health: Being in the centre of the community, pharmacists promote health through easy access to medicine and clinic services. It can be either
pro-active, such as the provision of flu-vaccines prior to the winter season, or reactive, such as treating a lice outbreak at the local school. • Interprets certain screening tests: Health screening tests provide pharmacists with valuable information regarding your current health condition and when and where you require medicine or referrals to a doctor. The pharmacist can assist you with the
interpretation of these tests for your own benefit. • Manages and facilitates lifestyle changes: Certain chronic diseases, health care programmes for the elderly and health outbreaks in the community can be managed by the pharmacist. Pharmacists also provide rehabilitation support to individuals and communities by giving advice on the use and selection of surgical appliances and equipment.

• Informs and educates: Pharmacists assist with responsible drug use. When it comes to self-medication your pharmacist has a responsibility to inform and educate you regarding the correct use of any type of medication. Pharmacists provide cost-effective and immediate health care for hundreds of people on a daily basis, making them an integral part of the South African health care system .
