Carbohydrates are not the enemy

A diabetic diet is all about eating to control blood sugar levels. Because diabetes has to do with a deficiency or total lack of insulin, many diabetics mistakenly believe that they are not allowed to eat carbohydrates which are naturally turned into sugar or glucose. They are afraid of anything that tastes sweet. They do not realize that with treatment they either inject insulin, or they support their own insulin sensitivity with oral medication, so in fact one way or the other they do have available insulin again. In other words, diabetics need carbohydrates just like any other person. However, they should just be very careful of overloading. They need a minimum of approximately 25 g of carbohydrates every three hours. Typically, the amount can be found in: 1 slice of bread and ½ banana, 2 scoops fruit salad, 200 ml fruit juice OR 1 scoop muesli and 100 ml sweetened, fat free yoghurt 2 scoops cooked starch and 1 small fruit

The Scoop-to-lose Eating Plan is developed to control blood sugar levels with portion control. The amount of carbohydrates that you

eat is still more important than the type of carbohydrates, so even if it is low glycemic index foods, you can still ‘overload’ the blood with sugar if you eat too much. If a food has a low glycemic index, of say 30, it simply means that 30 % of the carbohydrates or sugar is released within the first hour of eating the food, so there is sufficient carbs left for the rest of the two hours, until you eat your next snack. So low GI foods maintain sugar levels better over a period of time, so you have sustained energy and you do not run out if sugar so quickly. Rather read labels to see what the carbohydrate count of the portion is. Fruits in smaller portions, are excellent carbohydrate snacks which are high in fibre. Diabetics can even eat sugar in small amounts, like 34 tsp per day. If spread over time it will have very little effect on blood glucose levels. It is also important to know that it is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Diabetes that consumers can safely enjoy a range of

nutritive sweeteners and nonnutritive sweeteners (NNS) when consumed as part of a healthy diet.

There are no bad foods, rather focus on small meals which includes fresh foods high in vitamin C, like tomatoes, strawberries, citrus foods and green pepper with snacks in-between, and be careful of concentrated sweets, saturated fats and a lot of convenience foods and take-aways . Make sure to include a lot of “GREEN” in your diet, because magnesium is found in the chlorophyll of plants, and magnesium is needed for nearly every function in every body cell, so much more for the extra activity in body cells of diabetics. People with diabetes need at least 750 mg of magnesium per day. Exams:

help your child to cope The writing of exams can be a stressful time for any learner, but it doesn’t stop there. Everyone in the same household are in some way affected. To make it easier for the whole family, follow our easy tips to limit the stress in your home:

Environment First of all, your child should have somewhere quiet to study. Noise makes it more difficult to concentrate and retain information. During this time, also ensure that the TV is turned off and no cell phones or instant messaging is allowed.

Lifestyle It is a fact that healthy eating habits and a certain amount of activity is good for anyone, whether you are writing exams or not. Ensure that there are enough healthy snacks at hand and give them some time to go outdoors for some activity. Being outside for a while after being behind a desk for hours, also lifts the mood. Taking regular breaks, is a must.

Relationships Do not put unnecessary pressure on your child to perform. Being afraid

to fail also adds to the stress. Help your child with exam papers from previous years (easily obtainable from the schools or the Internet) and let them get familiar with an exam paper. Also reiterate that the work that was done throughout the year, was also in anticipation and preparation for the exam. Therefore, it is just the final step in the academic process. Help them revise by leaving them the space and time to do so. Be relaxed about chores or untidiness and understand they might be moody.

When to talk to your pharmacist By supporting and talking to your children, you can alleviate their stress. Be aware of changes in behaviour such as loss of sleep and/or appetite or extreme mood changes. If the stress becomes too much to handle, talk to your pharmacist about safe and effective supplements or medication.

Breakfast is where it starts Being overweight is thought to be one of the main causes of type 2 diabetes, in fact, 80% of type 2 diabetics are overweight. Reduction of body fat is therefore one of the key strategies in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. A high percentage body fat interferes with the body’s utilization of available insulin, which is also linked to insulin resistance. There is more value in starting your day with a healthy breakfast than one would think. A recent study showed a possible link between skipping breakfasts and increased risk for type 2 diabetes. Low-GI breakfast prevents overeating Apart from the benefit in eating breakfast to help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, ensuring that your breakfast choice has a low glycaemic index (GI) add further benefits. The GI ranks foods on the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels after eating. Foods with a high index are rapidly digested and result in high fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Foods with a low glycaemic index produce gradual rises in blood sugar and insulin levels and are considered more suitable for diabetics. Low GI breakfast foods can also increase feelings of satiety and fullness and may reduce the tendency of overeating throughout the day. Vital Original High Fibre Muesli is made with rolled oats, rolled wheat flakes, whole almonds, sultanas, raisins and sunflower seeds. Testing by the Glycemic Index Foundation of South Africa ranks this breakfast option as Low GI, with a GI value of 53. taken from Type 2 Diabetes, Reduce your risk - Breakfast is where it starts - Supplied by Vital”
